Over the last eight years Upset The Rhythm have inexhaustibly sought out the best underground sounds from all over the world. With fifty releases under their belt and their inspired series of YES WAY festivals they continually focus the spotlight on the UK’s own idiosyncratic DIY music. February 2012 sees the label hit the road with three incredibly inventive bands from their native soil to bring their pastoral punk, junked rhythms and tribal synth dance parties to the near and far of the United Kingdom. Upset The Rhythm’s Kingdom Tour sees GENTLE FRIENDLY, WAY THROUGH and PEEPHOLES team up to present a revolving lineup that resonates deep within landscape, drawing on forgotten pasts and remembered futures in equal measure.

Here’s a more in depth look at all the UTR artists featured on the tour…

GENTLE FRIENDLY are a duo from London, comprised of David Morris and Richard Manber, who have a penchant for circular melodies, tidal fuzz and rapid junked rhythms. With an austere setup of Casio keyboard, vocals and drums (sometimes electronic) the band push against the pop boundary, trapping their songs on record like a continuous sun-warped field recording. 2009 saw Gentle Friendly release their debut album 'Ride Slow' to critical acclaim, with Pitchfork even citing Clipse and Lil Wayne as influences on the band. Since then Gentle Friendly have remodeled and rebuilt their sound into a stronger beast at their home studio called Deep House. Bringing us up to date, new EP 'Rrrrrrr' is the first fruit to fall from the tree, with its seven tracks washing the band's insistent prism punk alongside more tender, filmic textures.

PEEPHOLES - Picture The World In Signs by Upset the Rhythm

Decidedly more motorik than the other tracks, 'Picture The World In Signs' finds relish in its unrelenting groove, allowing Kat to pitch plunge her vocal amongst the folds of psychedelic keyboard warmth. Like a resurgent memory, halfway through, the song recalls another direction, drowning in static waves, crushed drums and weird electronic parallels. The track reaches another plain, a new level higher than before, an evolving consciousness which is so true of Peepholes in general and this new record especially.

Since then Gentle Friendly have remodeled and rebuilt their sound into a stronger beast at their home studio called Deep House. Bringing us up to date, new EP ‘Rrrrrrr’ is the first fruit to fall from the tree, with its seven tracks washing the band’s more insistent prism punk alongside more tender, filmic textures.

‘Rrrrrrr’ as its name suggests uses repetition and a certain minimalist touch to create a wonderfully poignant wide-eyed record. But why Rrrrrrr? Rrrrrrr can be the sound of an engine idling, a death rattle, the buzz and howl under the influence of heat. The EP is standing in for a reality, away from words and closer to feeling, following instincts and worshipping the detail. Bittersweet in its tendency to mix more ecstatic moments alongside some contemplative pools, ‘Rrrrrrr’ shows how the band’s emotional range has grown since their debut. Opener ‘Kiwi Chang Cane’ leaps out of a nature sleep, the song swimming with resonance whilst its drums beat and tumble a path through the sidestepping static rush. The song races onwards, with gleeful ascending keyboards reaching out in a questlike fashion akin to the song’s Shaolin monk namesake’s attempt to find his lost brother. Meanwhile ‘Speakers’ finds Gentle Friendly in ballad form with gattling gun snare hits and David’s most heartfelt vocal yet. “Put your arm around the speaker … it’s like dancing without moving” he sings into the relative space of the track, moving focus squarely on a sense of resigned simplicity.

‘Rrrrrrr’ is a development for the band in terms of sound and production as much as lyrical scope and understanding. While their self-acknowledged influences (Arthur Russell, Bruce Springsteen, Top 40 hip-hop) are detectable, this record showcases Gentle Friendly as a band who have found their own language, drawing on nostalgia and ritual in equal measure, whilst continuing the tradition of English eccentricity and popular song. ‘Rome Rome’ sees Gentle Friendly at their most immediate, vacillating on overheard music David sings “On the radio she said you should put on a ring, if you like it, if you like it, turn it off”. His metronomic vocal delivery is unstoppable, the percussive treatment dicing itself into each spare beat, creating a feeling of transcendence and of galloping rush. In comparison, ‘Love Scenes’ is a positively nocturnal shift with its clubby house kick and spectral synth soup and panning drum shuffles. Seamlessly blending into ‘Rrride Slow’ with its pitched down vocal gurgle and channelled depths of caveman techno, the record enjoys throwing organic nature against distanced electronics in an almost meditative way.

Overlapping rhythms, looped mixtapes and revisited lyrical themes make rebirth an important touchstone for this release. This is perhaps best distilled with the track entitled ‘Rrrrr’. Stammering repetition finds a home in swirls of chorus-inflected atmosphere, chiming bells and shaken metal. There’s a feeling of inevitability in the slow melodic cycling and tribal drumming, the whole effect is one of focusing inwards and devotional crescendo. Gentle Friendly are masters of aching sentiment, overheard static and enraptured awakening and with this record they turn the quiet repeated actions of our everyday into a blissful all-consuming wave of saturation.

WAY THROUGH - Arrow Shower LP out TODAY

WAY THROUGH are a pastoral punk duo originally from Shropshire, now residing in London. Informed by the field as much as the flyover, Way Through write songs which phase in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals. Using wrong-footed repetition, rapid interplay and free-looping happenstance the band create a ragged yet intuitive tapestry of sound. Their songs walk the streets of market towns, wait forever at bus stops and lose themselves in edgelands. 'Arrow Shower' is the title of Way Through's debut album, recorded in their practice space Deep House during a particularly heavy snowstorm in early winter 2011. The name of the album is taken from a set text of Philip Larkin's 'Whitsun Weddings' heavily annotated by a 14 year old schoolboy found in a junk shop in Much Wenlock, often described as England's most perfect village. Way Through find great resonance with the spirit of place and try and channel its feeling into their music, joining the dots between lost places and deteriorating histories. The 16mm film captures a Predator-masked kid with a guitar-smashing complex trailing around Los Angeles fulfilling his primal urge to destroy. We think it looks insane and wonderful so wanted to share it with you, look out for Jim Smith on the telephone too, "hello!"

We're taking this opportunity to remind you once again about all the bands playing our three day YES WAY festival this weekend at the Bussey Building. We still have some three day passes for just £18 as well as plenty of day tickets available, so come celebrate the UK's music underground with us! YES WAY is a weekend festival celebrating the UK's best and brightest independent art and music.

Building on the success of the last two year's sold out events, it will see 42 bands, representing the length and breadth of the British Isles, perform over two stages at Peckham art hub, The Bussey Building.

We'll have Dalston's Underground Film Club (The Pictures) screening a special compilation of DIY documentaries, music videos and no-future shorts. Some chopped and rejigged live projections from Charles Chintzer Lai, interpretative canvas wrangling from Tim Hill and much more. A large scale screenprinted Ice Cream Tsunami skyline courtesy of Lydia Donut is being installed tomorrow and an exhibition is planned of many, many representations of this following promo photo of Mr Randy Newman:

In support of our recent release of our split Please / Spin Spin The Dogs LP whose artwork depicts the Randy above through the eyes of six different members of the band we've now broadened the obsession to everyone. If you'd like to bring your own Randy (artwork etc.), please do, come see us at the door and we'll hang it with the others.

It’s that time of the year for YES WAY to jump back in its saddle! Taking place between August 12-14, YES WAY is a London-based three day festival intent on celebrating the UK's best and brightest independent art and music.

After the success of last two year's sold out events, YES WAY 3 will see 45 bands, representing the length and breadth of the British Isles, perform over two stages this time at Peckham art hub The Bussey Building, previously used by UTR for their Spaghetti Tree festival in April to great success. We’ll have our usual DIY swapshop / record store, tasty local and Vegan food, now supplemented by the Bussey Building’s rooftop bar-BQ too.

YES WAY has been a real turning point for the UK’s underground music scene. The emphasis of the festival is on exposing under the radar gems from around the UK, uniting musicians from disparate genres and local scenes, helping to foster a sense of community and enthusiasm amongst them and fans of the music. The fact that only four of the acts this year played at last year’s event speaks volumes for the on-going fertility of that burgeoning community.

JOHN MAUS - Head For The Country VIDEO

‘Head For The Country’ is the pivotal track from John Maus' eagerly anticipated third album 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves' released next Monday on Upset The Rhythm.

‘Head For The Country’ was one of the last songs to make the album and with its elegiac disco bounce it leaves a lasting impression. The song meditates on human beings seeking salvation in the great outdoors, and its central call of ‘Somewhere there’s a crime being committed’ seeps deep into your conscience. This sense of wanting to reach out and find meaning is captured perfectly by Jennifer Juniper Stratford’s great new video for the song that sees John heading out into snowy Minnesotan edgelands, driving to a mysterious radar base and communicating with space via flashing auras and spinning satellites. This is the second video for John that JJ Stratford (Telefantasy Studios) has directed, the first being for ‘Believer’, it’s also worth noting that JJ is also the mastermind behind the impressive Multinauts sci-fi saga too.

Spin Spin The Dogs are a group who formed on the fringes of Nottingham in 2003. Presently London-grounded, the band are a four piece playing out with guitar, keyboard, rubbery bass, drums and a narrative-heavy vocal. Throughout several lineup changes the band have continually found their stride in different shoes, documenting this with a 10” on Fancy Paradise and a recent album on Gringo entitled “Leave Me In Leicester”. Spin Spin’s side of this record wonderfully captures a fact known to many who’ve seen the band live; that they abandoned conventional truth years ago. Their approach to writing songs is often a collaborative exercise, taking nonsensical twists and turns into streets of rambling postpunk and cul de sacs of dissonant melody.

Opener ‘Jumbo’ sets the tone for the record with its quotidian focus and attention-tossing interplay, sounding as natural and quintessentially English as it gets. A song dealing with childhood promise and the realities of growing up, ‘Jumbo’ lets the guitars freely roam. Forthright drums cement a core that singer Vincent Larkin uses to tumble his words across. “Every single word I say, could make you laugh, could make you cry”, confesses Vincent with his commanding yet oft-deadpan holler. It’s this tragicomic focus which best denotes the band’s personality. Shown further with track ‘Inner Peace’, which uncovers truths of divine idiocy in the face of a spiritual awakening. Other tracks like ‘Biggest Fist’ and ‘New Bad Boy’ (featuring some choice cowbell and horn blowing) also show off Spin Spin’s love for the outlandish right-siding of song structure, transmitting short bursts of energy which test the limits before plaintively collapsing.

On the other side of the record we have Please, a trio conceived in London in 2006, comprised of duelling guitarists and an activated drummer. Thus far one 10” exists in the Please cannon courtesy of Ouse Records which is an excellent introduction to their wayward psych-garage stomp. The band feature members of The Lowest Form, Cleckhudderfax and Isambard Kingston Brunel, so it comes as no surprise that Please also sound completely different. Together the threesome offer up ramshackle rhythms, trippy aerobic guitars played alongside unmannered vocals. Delivered with the heady rush you’d expect of punk, Please race 60s garage slap alongside wrong-footed prog through an obstacle course.

Frenzied, feverish guitars and crashing rhythms dominate first track ‘Clothes’, giving a taste of the band’s impish demeanor. Hot off the blocks ‘The Germ’ discusses themes of turning seasons amongst swirling space echo and cyclical clattering. Heavily instrumental and high-spirited Please tease with false endings and secret passageways, which exhibit well the extraordinary chemistry the three have forged. This side of the 12” cools off for the paranoid and cinematic ‘Harrow and Wealdstone’, its spooked guitars creating a darker mood before charging the gates for closer ‘Pass The Apple’. Finishing on a high note the last song’s chiming guitars and rattling drums sound effortlessly spontaneous and bags of fun.

Incidentally paintings of American songwriter Randy Newman in a relaxed yet dynamic pose are featured throughout the record’s artwork. Painstakingly hand crafted by members of both bands over days, months and years, the joint artwork is a good example of why this record works so well. Both bands share a common sense of humour, a fondness for each other and a mindset of offering the unexpected. Please and Spin Spin The Dogs combined on one LP make the UK underground a more fun place to lose your mind.

'Believer' is the finale track from John Maus' eagerly anticipated third album 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves' released through Upset The Rhythm (worldwide, except North America through Ribbon Music) on June 27th. The image attached is a suitably trippy visual from Jennifer Juniper Stratford's wonderful new video for 'Believer', which features John Maus for the first time alongside his hero “Jack Chan”. John is seen in profile singing about “people fighting all across the world” whilst some serious rare, analog video effects transport us through the waves of an alien landscape. The scenes of Jackie are taken from his wonderful film ‘Shaolin Wooden Men’ and it’s also worthy to note that JJ Stratford (Telefantasy Studios) is also the mastermind behind the impressive Multinauts sci-fi saga too.

Firstly THANKS go out to everyone for coming to see SIGHTINGS play last week - they didn't disappoint, what a continually interesting band! Another band that constantly evolve their sound into ever weirder territories is MI AMI who we're lucky enough to have playing tomorrow night at Corsica Studios. MI AMI have recently warped into a frenzied, pulsing duo of insistent vocals ND glowing electronic alchemy, we're very excited to see the results play out live. Also tomorrow sees the start of Oakland's NO BABIES UK tour, so they'll be playing a fast, whirlwind set ahead of mutant pop opener DIVA TOO. It's going to be memorable that's for sure, tickets on the door and live music starting around 8.40pm FYI. MI AMI have jumped into the next yard. Gone are the ferocious guitar, hypnotic bass-lines, and the thundering drums of 'Steal Your Face' and 'Watersports', now replaced by an unrelenting electronic vibrancy. Bass player Jacob Long left the band earlier this year, creating an opportunity for founding members Damon Palermo and Daniel Martin-McCormick to dive headfirst into a new setup: Damon on the 707 drum machine and a sampler that uses floppy disks, Daniel on the mic and keys, riding the mix. Elements of this new approach can be heard on their 'Cut Men' and 'Techno' 12"s, but those were baby steps. New Thrill Jockey album 'Dolphins' is the sound of a band diving head first into the musical fray. Listeners can feel Damon's command of the rhythm expressed through the drum machine, alchemizing the inorganic into the organic, while Daniel's trademark vocals remind you that this is Mi Ami. 'Dolphins' is a melting, dystopian refraction of left-field new age, lush soundscapes and Italo daydreams overlapping with slaughtered dolphins and the heartbreak of "Hard Up." Simultaneously ingesting and rejecting pop pleasure, wide-eyed optimism and modern despair, it is equal parts improvisatory winging it and forceful, fully-realized vision. Blurring the line between the tainted and the sublime, 'Dolphins' is the sound of a band thrillingly re-imagining itself.

DIVA aka Diva Dompe is a sci-fi priestess of unique talent from Los Angeles. Having founded the fabulously costumed trio BlackBlack with her sister Lola; thrown down sinewy bass grooves as a member of the sadly missed Pocahaunted and grown into a key member of the sublime L.A. Ladies Choir, Diva has now gone solo! 'The Glitter End' is Diva’s first record and it’s a fantastic piece of work with 80's noir rubbing shoulders with vibrant tropicália and mutated pop forms. April Fools' Day is an often maligned time of the year. Since the times of Chaucer the day has persisted in the unravelling of sanity, practical jokes and tomfoolery, even though nowadays we're lucky to notice a hoax in the papers before all fun is culled by noon. This is why we have decided to celebrate the day in style, restoring the event to its anarchic origins with a 48 hour spectacle of fun and music taking place in Peckham Rye's old cricket bat factory, The Bussey Building. The two day event is entitled Spaghetti Tree in homage to the 1957 Panorama broadcast which fooled the nation.

On Friday 1 April we're lucky enough to have US sonic eccentrics Dan Deacon and John Maus throwing down the gauntlet to the UK's finest keyboard-weirding acts including PLUG, Munch Munch and Design A Wave. After the revels we'll lead a procession into the darkness of the Rye in an attempt to see one of William Blake's childhood visions of an angel in a tree. The next day things get blown further apart as logic continues to be defied, this time with No Age, Japanther, Ducktails, Ignatz, Please, Peepholes, Hygiene, Woolf, Smack Wizards and Eternal Fags all performing across the space's several rooms.

So yes, we're guaranteeing the most fun April Fools' Day ever, along with it's confused Saturday brother. Feeling hungry? Let's reap the Spaghetti grove!

DAN DEACON is an absurdist composer and electronic musician based in Baltimore, Maryland. Musically influenced by Devo, Talking Heads, Scratch Orchestra, People Like Us, Raymond Scott and Conlon Nancarrow, Dan's music strives to take modern experimental composition and electronic music out of the circle of the esoteric intellectual gangs and hipster communities, placing it into more informal "fun time". Dan's music is about community and how to organise and inspire it. From founding the well-known Wham City art collective, to organising and running an annually sold-out DIY music festival called Whartscape, to conceiving, planning and curating the massive 60 person / 30 band Baltimore Round Robin Tour, it's clear to see that bringing people together is the major theme of his work, only exemplified further by his gameplay with the audience. Dan's recent album 'Bromst' embodies the same energy and excitement as the previous melting pot 'Spiderman of the Rings', however the craftsmanship and composition have a wider scope and richer palette. Bromst overflows with a mixture of acoustic instruments, mechanical instruments, samples and electronics. NO AGE is Randy Randall and Dean Spunt – two heavyweights from the Los Angeles punk / skate / art underworld. A crashing collision of sweetly shouted ditties, ecstatic crunch feedback and violent bouts of percussion, the NO AGE sound is abound with pop songs fighting to break through a mist of white fuzz. In March 2007, the band released a set of five vinyl only EPs across five different labels, including their debut ‘Get Hurt’ 12″ on Upset The Rhythm, some highlights of which have since been compiled for Fat Cat CD ‘Weirdo Rippers’. The duo’s debut album proper ‘Nouns’ was released in 2008 on the rather epic Sub Pop imprint to much acclaim and was followed up with the dreamy, more-sampled based ‘Losing Feeling’ EP last year. This show sees No Age playing with recently added third member on sound sources/electronics called Cundo Bermudez and performing a ton of new material from their excellent new album ‘Everything In Between’.

DUCKTAILS is Matt Mondanile, a New Jersey resident whose pop is drenched in a warm drone. There is an amazingly realised aesthetic running through this stuff, with all its plastic nostalgias - like Ninja Turtles pizza, fake palm trees and sugary cereal - and the lo-fi tape fuzz that also permeates his other projects, Predator Vision, Real Estate and Dreams In Mirror Field. It's home recording with one of the most embracing feels you'll find - reminiscent of Ariel Pink, but with a weird-out exploratory nudge. Matthew prefers cassettes as scuffed-up homes for this stuff, but a vinyl full-length on LA DIY label Not Not Fun and a new LP on Olde English Spelling Bee and Woodsist are more widely come by. This show sees Matt teaming up with Spectrals as his backing group, to expand the music into new realms.

JAPANTHER is an art project established circa 2001 by Ian Vanek - who plays drums, cassettes and sings - and Matt Reilly - who plays bass and Casio SK-1, and sings. The explosive, unapologetically punk power duo have collaborated with a variety of artists including Penny Rimbaud, Dan Graham, Eileen Myles, Ninjasonik, Anita Sparrow and Spankrock. They have made a name for themselves through their energising live shows, sometimes in unique performance situations - alongside synchronised swimmers, a top the Williamsburg Bridge, with giant marionettes and shadow puppets, and from the back of a moving truck in SoHo, with giant dinosaurs and BMXers flying off the walls. Last year saw them release their wildly awesome album 'Rock N Roll Ice Cream' on Menlo Park.

PLEASE are a trio conceived in London in 2006, comprised of duelling guitarists and an activated drummer. Thus far one 10" exists in the Please cannon courtesy of Ouse Records, which is an excellent introduction to their wayward psych-garage stomp. The band feature members of The Lowest Form, Cleckhudderfax and Isambard Kingston Brunel, so it comes as no surprise that Please also sound completely different. Together the threesome offer up ramshackle rhythms and trippy aerobic guitars played alongside unmannered vocals. Delivered with the heady rush you'd expect of punk, Please race 60s garage slap and wrong-footed prog through an obstacle course. PEEPHOLES are Katia Barrett and Nick Carlisle who take turns singing, drumming and synth-prodding whilst smiling a lot and running back and forth on stage. Their songs, often cloaked in a cloud of echoing atmospherics, throb with raucous beats and jab you in the eye when you're not looking. It's party music for the lost at sea - sometimes tribal, sometimes soaring, never boring. Peepholes have a number of self-released EPs available through their website, a brilliant record on Hungry For Power and, most recently, a split 12" EP on Upset The Rhythm.

HYGIENE take the listener on a post-pub stagger through the concrete walkways and underpasses of Britain's decline. Daydreaming at their offices on a weekday or at home with their record collection on a Saturday night, the members of Hygiene are dislocated in both time and space. Their new LP 'Public Sector' (La Vida Es Un Mus) has one DM boot in the past and the other longwing brogue firmly up the backside of the present. 'Public Sector' hearkens back to a time of Polytechnic radicalism, Special Patrol Group repression and O Level temptresses yet evades the pitfalls of vapid historicity and pastiche. Hygiene see historical continuities and follow them to their logical conclusions, reducing their influences down to their essential constituent elements and reassembling them into now music for now people.

IGNATZ is named after the vicious mouse that would throw bricks at Krazy Kat's head in the 1910s comic of the same name, Ignatz is the one man band of a young guy called Bram Devens from Brussels, whose futuristic folk / blues inspired chanting and rambling might fit in the "New Weird Belgium" or freak folk movement. Stunning rootsfolk, but played by a lost and unworldly creature, his sound is a mix of fingerpicked guitar music in a cloud of effects, electronic noises and scarce lyrics - a mixture of broken English and unintelligible mantra-like repetitions. KIT are a super-melodic experimental rock band mainly from Los Angeles, California. They were recently described by Rob Barber of High Places as "a strange intersection where Void meet Incredible String Band". This gives some insight into their wonderful muddling of genres. They play fast, short, defiant songs that mess with the ideas of pop music and wayward punk. Maybe they'll start off playing a song straight - sweetness and light abounds - but, before you know it, everything gets flipped on its head and chased into damaged terrain. KIT songs can typically embrace hardcore rush, pop verse, jagged noise and cheer rally, all within the same moment - nothing but raw energy and instinctive songwriting holding it all together. Nodzzz are Sean Paul on guitar, Anthony Atlas on bass and Pete Hilton on drums. They're sweet dudes with an even sweeter sound, first honed on a killer single called "(I Don't Wanna) Smoke Marijuana" b / w "We Are the Only Animals" released on the wonderful Make A Mess imprint. Barely three minutes long, each side tore the face off the last days of 2007, revealing a candy skeleton that had the Modern Lovers' teeth marks in it. The group's self-titled debut on What's Your Rupture is a grower, with ten new songs in a markedly more pop direction. You can hear the simple American pleasures of baseball, road trips and late summer plain as day within this record. More specifically, you can hear three guys examining where punk became something more, between notions of power pop and advanced songwriting on the Embarrassment / Big Dipper / Pointed Sticks axis, but with the economy of the Minutemen or Beat Happening. They're in and out before you know it, having firmly planted the seeds of catchy melodies between your ears. This is day one of their UK tour with The Mantles ahead of their new album 'Innings' on Woodsist.

FORMER GHOSTS is a synth-pop project from Freddy Ruppert. The band in recording mode also comprises Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart, Zola Jesus' Nika Roza Danilova and Yasmine Kittles from Tearist. Ruppert is the lead songwriter on this brutally gloomy, effortlessly honest project. With their debut album 'Fleurs', the band created an album so intense that it can become hard to listen to. And we say this in an effort to compliment their ability to render the themes of the album - heartbreak, death, love, needing, wanting - so sonically accurate that they replicate those feelings in the listener. Album number two 'New Love.' was released last November also on Upset The Rhythm and was very well received. The album deals with new love as a cure for the heartbreak and jealousy of the past, but a beginning to a new obsession - the search to replace the old love. For this show Freddy will be accompanied by Jamie Stewart for the entire "Fleurs-heavy" set.

TERROR BIRD hail from Vancouver and are the wife and husband duo Nikki Never and Jeremiah Haywood. Night-People teamed up with German label Adagio 830 to present their debut album 'Human Culture' last year - a masterpiece of heartfelt, haunted, ethereal pop music. Nikki's piano and synth arrangements guide her voice, full of feeling and beauty, through layers of dark ambience that constantly break away into shiny spaces of hopeful abandon. POWERDOVE aka Annie Lewandowski was born and raised in the Midwest and now lives in England. Her first band, Emma Zunz, recorded their self-titled debut album for Tellous in 2006. JOHN MAUS lives in his birthplace of Austin, Minnesota. Whilst working towards his PhD in Political Science he also composes music that taps into melancholic fantasy and affirms that we are all truly alive. Questing synthesisers, tensely strung bass lines and chasing drum machines providing the perfect backdrop for John's deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal. Born in the decade of synth pop and sharing his birthday with George Frideric Handel, John started making music when Nirvana posters went up on every teenager’s wall. It’s this curious conflux of influences that partially helps to describe John’s music. It’s a world where the Germs jam with Jerry Goldsmith, Cabaret Voltaire relocate to Eternia and Josquin des Prez writes a new score for RoboCop. The confrontation of punk, the fleeting poignancy of 80’s movie soundtracks, the insistent pulse of Moroder and the spirituality of Medieval and Baroque music all find salvation in John Maus.

John Maus’ debut album proper entitled ‘Songs’ was released in 2006. It was a record permeated with aching memories; a perfect testimony to lost romance and longing. It’s awe-inspired follow-up ‘Love Is Real’ (released on UTR, 2007) proved a more cohesive listen in terms of focus and emotional depth. Maus finally returned last year to the heavy snows of the Midwest to finish album number three, ‘We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves’, set for release this June.

‘We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves’ breaks new ground for Maus. The shirt pulling and air punching of his impassioned live performance is finally captured in all its frenzied appeal alongside a tender inner space. ‘Pitiless Censors’ looks towards the future in all its absurdity. It’s a record where promise takes the lead for the first time, providing a counterpoint to John’s default existential calling. This is perhaps best shown with new track ‘Quantum Leap’ available through the link above and via iTunes as of now. ‘Quantum Leap’, a song full of dead zones, glancing slaps and oscillating solos. “Heart to heart, mind to mind, we are the ones who seem to travel through time,” intones Maus resolutely through the mist. John’s lyrics are as likely to touch upon themes of Cronenberg gore just as much as the musings of Jacques Rancière. It’s this no-brow approach that makes things interesting, casting Maus as a savant and allowing his music to startle us in ways whereby we open up to the unimaginable.

ZOUNDS are an English anarchist band formed in 1977 by Steve Lake. Originally part of the cassette culture movement they were also involved in the squatting and free festival scene. The name of the band is derived from the old English minced oath coined by William Shakespeare: "zounds", which is a contraction of "God's wounds", referring to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. Their first EP, Can't Cheat Karma, was released on the Crass Records label and features possibly their most well known track "Subvert", a call to arms against the grind of daily life. The release of this EP and association with Crass led to an increase in the bands profile in the embryonic Anarcho Punk scene, touring with both Crass and the Poison Girls as well as performing several squat gigs in West Berlin. The band released their first album ‘The Curse of Zounds’ on Rough Trade Records in 1981, followed by a further three singles on the same label before splitting up in late 1982 disaffected with the Anarchist music scene in general and worn out from touring. Zounds have recently warmed to playing live shows again, so it’s a real pleasure to have them on board for this special show.

COLD PUMAS specialise in pounding, motorik repetition that grabs the groove for dear life. Running rings around themselves with exultant abandon, these three spirited men from Brighton are haunted by grand visions, combining cyclical, harmonised guitar riffs, impressionistic vocals and interwoven rhythms to great effect. At times recalling the metronomic tendencies of Abe Vigoda and the extended, mesmerising pulse of NEU or Boredoms, Cold Pumas echo in a cave very much of their own, with the last year seeing a split record with Male Bonding through Faux Discx, a RMX EP with Hungry For Power and a 7” on Upset The Rhythm. Look out for a recent split 7” with Women, Friendo and Fair Ohs, as well as an new single on Volar Records too.

THE STICKS are a stripped down garage party band from Brighton. They bash drums, sway on the bass and claw at guitar - often swapping over instruments between songs live - and yelp with melodic abandon and delight. The Sticks were recently dubbed as 'semi-amateur', this may be true. With cheap, unreliable equipment they manage to tease out a cacophony of crashing drums and raucous guitar melodies. The key elements of the trio's sound are undoubtedly drawn from the rudimentary ideas found in the more inept efforts of mid-sixties teen bands such as The Chimney Sweeps and The Keggs, as well as more modern day equivalents The Black Lips, The Coachwhips or The Hospitals, say. The Sticks have a double 7” album available through Upset The Rhythm and a brand new 7” on M’lady’s Records.

THE LOWEST FORM like it loud and play it fast. Featuring members of Please, The Human Race, Birds Of Delay and Army Of Flying Robots, this relatively new heavy gang are quickly becoming master craftsmen of the sex/vid-styled school of noise punk.

WARM BRAINS is the newest project from DIY producer extraordinaire, Rory Attwell. With a distinctive lo-fi feel that has become a trademark of the acts that Rory has produced (Robin from Male Bonding now also plays in the band), Warm Brains hurl wiry woven guitars and winter-tinged vocals into a colourful storm of urgent noise and on-the-spot dynamic rawk. Marshall Teller will be releasing a 7” soon and the follow up album ‘Old Volcanoes’ in April.

WAY THROUGH are a duo from Shropshire, phasing in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals. Haunted by a wrong-footed pastoral punk the band write ragged intuitive songs, shot through with technicolour noise. April Fools' Day is an often maligned time of the year. Since the times of Chaucer the day has persisted in the unravelling of sanity, practical jokes and tomfoolery, even though nowadays we're lucky to notice a hoax in the papers before all fun is culled by noon.

This is why we have decided to celebrate the day in style, restoring the event to its anarchic origins with a 48 hour spectacle of fun and music taking place in Peckham Rye's old cricket bat factory, The Bussey Building.

The two day event is entitled Spaghetti Tree in homage to the 1957 Panorama broadcast which fooled the nation.

On Friday 1 April we're lucky enough to have US sonic eccentrics Dan Deacon and John Maus throwing down the gauntlet to the UK's finest keyboard-weirding acts including PLUG, Munch Munch and Design A Wave. After the revels we'll lead a procession into the darkness of the Rye in an attempt to see one of William Blake's childhood visions of an angel in a tree.

The next day things get blown further apart as logic continues to be defied, this time with No Age, Japanther, Ducktails, Ignatz, Please, Peepholes, Hygiene, Woolf, Smack Wizards and Eternal Fags all performing across the space's several rooms.

So yes, we're guaranteeing the most fun April Fools' Day ever, along with it's confused Saturday brother. Feeling hungry? Let's reap the Spaghetti grove!

Japanther is an art project established circa 2001 by Ian Vanek - who plays drums, cassettes and sings - and Matt Reilly - who plays bass and Casio SK-1, and sings. The explosive, unapologetically punk power duo have collaborated with a variety of artists including Penny Rimbaud, Dan Graham, Eileen Myles, Ninjasonik, Anita Sparrow and Spankrock. They have made a name for themselves through their energising live shows, sometimes in unique performance situations - alongside synchronised swimmers, a top the Williamsburg Bridge, with giant marionettes and shadow puppets, and from the back of a moving truck in SoHo, with giant dinosaurs and BMXers flying off the walls. Shellshag were born out of the long-running public arts and living experiment warehouses in San Francisco called Starcleaners, but now reside in Brooklyn. They've been described as an amalgam of The Breeders, Sonic Youth, Guided By Voices and early Superchunk. And, because they're a male guitarist / female drummer duo, those touch points (Matt and Kim, Juicifer and White Stripes) get tossed around like confetti too. They've played with everyone from Iggy Pop to their label mates, Screaming Females, with their first, now out of print 'Gary Young' EP recorded by Pavement's Gary Young. New album 'Rumors In Disguise' is their most inspired and concentrated record yet - from the grin-laced stubborn pride in Johnny Shell's vocals to Jen Shag's tom-heavy heartbeat rhythms, every inch of tape is as real as it gets.

Hello again everyone!
Seems so strange to wish you a HAPPY Twenty Eleven ankle-deep into the year already but we'd like to anyway, it's been good to us so far and we hope the best things await for you this year.

Despite our lack of communication things have been far from quiet of the Upset front, we've been busy booking tours for KIT, NODZZZ/THE MANTLES and THE BABIES, featuring members of Vivian Girls and Woods, too. We've also been wrangling some new records together for you. Our next two releases will be a double compilation celebrating our 50th release!!! and JOHN MAUS's third album (rather perfectly) entitled 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves'. Think late March, early April, our blog will have more news on both of these very soon.

If that wasn't enough activity we've also pulled together new shows for JAMES FERRARO (next week), TEARIST, LITURGY, DUSTIN WONG, and a very special show for HALF JAPANESE, their first in London for 18 years no less! We are beyond excitement. OK, now we've caught up, our next instinct is to big up our kickstart show of the year which will take place on Monday at The Victoria in Dalston. We're lucky enough to have DIVORCE and CHILD ABUSE playing as part of their joint tour with the enigmatic DEAD DAYS BEYOND HELP opening proceedings. It'll be loud and proud and most fun in the crowd. DIVORCE were born in Glasgow through a frustration that their kinda music wasn't getting heard in their city. Brought together through random encounters, solid friendships and drunken obsessive discussions at terrible parties, the four members who make up Divorce have no more of an exacting agenda than just MAKE NOISE and MAKE IT GOOD. The end result has been likened to a roughly grafted assemblage of no-wave punk bands like Teenage Jesus and DNA, the squalling noise of Big Black and Swans, and the rhythmically violent sounds of bands like AIDS Wolf and Arab On Radar. Divorce have music released through Optimo, Merok, Milk and Winning Sperm Party but are best experienced live, in a small sweaty room, with all the ear-splitting volume and uninhibited audience confrontation that goes with it. CHILD ABUSE, from New York City, bring together playfully wild keyboards, throbbed bass stabs, stuttering piledriver percussion and demonic vocal fits. Brutal, catchy, complex, dissonant grind. Child Abuse is the logical result of an entire generation raised by Nintendo and overbearing, Tipper Gore-admiring moms. "Reading is for people who don't vomit, and Morbid Angel lives in my closet next to my porno!" the band seems to shout with its avalanche of Casio squeals, death-metal percussion and forgot-to-take-my-Thorazine howls. Child Abuse have several records available now through Lovepump United, Zum and Rock Is Hell.

DEAD DAYS BEYOND HELP are a dissonant and somewhat melancholic duo consisting of Alex Ward and Jem Doulton. As the only constraints they acknowledge are the limits of what can be achieved with one guitar and a drum kit, the results can range from country-tinged simplicity through hyper-composed intricacy to flat-out noise. The band have records available through Capepod Records and a newly finished studio improv album in the can awaiting release too.

Headbanging from dawn to dusk with Josh Taylor and his long hair family - featuring sloppy toothpaste, KIT bouncing off the walls, a George Chen mask, in-store CCTV mosh and a nice relaxing bedroom story. Thee Oh Sees killed it on Monday, it's unbelievable how they outdo themselves each time they play, what a band! PLUG are another band not content to rest on their laurels, they just keep reaching for that next level and tomorrow we've organised a party with them to celebrate their debut album release on Upset The Rhythm. It's in a new venue for us called ARTCH which is essentially an arts space in a railway arch (hence the name) next door to Bethnal Green tube station. Alongside PLUG we have THE DEVIL bringing their almighty clatter and DESIGN A WAVE fresh from their new record on Alter. Three of our favourite UK bands all in one space having a knees up in honor of arguably the best pop album of the year! Live music will tie up around 11pm but then we have Mike Levitt and James Stringer DJing afterwards into the wee small hours so be sure to get your groove on. PLUG are an articulate drums-and-also-bass duo from London who deal in heartily-voiced, compulsive melodies married to an incessant nodding groove. Comprising Sian Dorrer (vocals and drums) and Georgie Nettell (bass, keys and vocals) PLUG construct minimal pop vignettes with bright, sumptuous basslines locking indelibly with crisp, taught drumming - a deceptively simple yet driving combination owing as much to hip-hop and dance as the sparse clatter of post-punk. Songs are handled deftly with Sian's strident, powerful vocals augmented by Georgie's more subdued whisper. PLUG play a sophisticated kind of post-something pop with a brisk intensity, a wry sense of humour and a canny knack for a memorable hook. THE DEVIL is a three piece group from London. The first day's play was quite painful for them in a physical sense. They had the mother of all hangovers and the bright illumination of the venue, plus the additional TV lights, weren't exactly helping. Even Reardon complained about them. The day finished with Ray Up 8-5. Their school report that night would have read: "The Devil is a slacker, must do better in class and pay attention more." It was 2006 and their lives were rapidly going down the same hill as their marriage. A psychologist once said of them: "The Devil is the nearest you will get to a sane group." They did get some revenge for the Reardon defeat though when they beat him in the finals of the Canadian Club, but it was scant consolation. They went back to Australia to try and patch things up with Cara and also play some gigs there. No manager, a bad name and no world crown. Next they had to sort themselves out. They made a promise that The Devil would return.

DESIGN A WAVE is one-man recording machine, Tom Hirst, sometimes in solo musical guise, sometimes with added choreography. Design A Wave have perfected an emotive, melancholic synth pop which nods towards the eccentricity of artists like Snakefinger and Tuxedomoon, the synthetic slickness and charity shop glamour of Italo Disco, and the misery of coldwave. Design A Wave have a brand new 12" record entitled 'Live On Your Yard' released through Alter Records now. This is the first vinyl release in Design a Wave's 10 year history, following on from a slew of humble and privately distributed CD-Rs, and also the first Design A Wave recording to feature external musicians - Melissa Osborne on synth and Will Saunders on bass.

New KIT 'Invocation' CD and LP released TODAY tooo

KIT are a super-melodic experimental rock band mainly from Los Angeles, California. They were recently described by Rob Barber of High Places as "a strange intersection where Void meet Incredible String Band". This gives some insight into their wonderful muddling on genres. They play fast, short, defiant songs that mess with the ideas of pop music and wayward punk. Maybe they'll start off playing a song straight - sweetness and light abounds - but before you know it everything gets flipped on its head and chased into damaged terrain. KIT songs can typically embrace hardcore rush, pop verse, jagged noise and cheer rally, all within the same moment - nothing but raw energy and instinctive songwriting holding it all together.

'INVOCATION' is KIT's second full-length and sees them producing a decidedly more reflective and considered album. Rooted in the occult and metaphysics, it's drenched in West Coast sunshine noir - a contradiction of excessive over-the-top speed-demon pop and ominous leviathans lurking right below the surface.

Recorded at the Department of Safety in Anacortes, Washington aka "Nowhere" - before this legendary all-ages art space shut down - the band removed all of its familiar comfort zones for the sessions of 'INVOCATION'. The northern latitude meant longer days to work in and a refurbished fire station to play with, the sound of its concrete halls folding into Phil Elverum's (Microphones, Mount Eerie) unorthodox recording.

Trash Kit return with a new 7" single bearing two of their finest tracks yet. 'Teenagers' is a triumph of immediacy, mixed emotions and thunderstorms, whilst double A-side 'How Do You Do?' is ultimately poignant with its mixture of handclaps and twisting melody. "Will I remember her this September when it gets wet? Break me up, sweep me up," sings Rachel looking backwards with different eyes.

The 7" is limited to 500 copies on translucent orange vinyl. The digital version is accompanied by an exclusive song entitled 'Happy New Year', taken from the same session as their album and included recently on their tour-only cassette compilation.

Directed by Amir Shoucri, “Taurean Nature” is the second video from New Love, the new album from Former Ghosts. A very sublime profile of self-hatred, it features Freddy Ruppert as Elvis Presley on his day off.

“The original concept was to recreate a complete Vegas-era Elvis spectacle,” says Shoucri. “I planned and arranged the production for months -- lights, stagehands, the works -- at great personal cost, both financial and mental. We hired four hundred extras: a 23-piece backing band with vintage instruments, a stadium-sized audience all done up in period haircuts and wardrobe, and a second film crew "shooting" a video within the video -- just for effect. We even rented an outdoor marquee for the establishing shot. The day before the shoot, Freddy changed his mind. He said: "I'm just not feeling it dude." So we fired the entire crew, most of whom have families to support, and made this instead.”

Amir Shoucri grew up in Los Angeles. In 2008, he directed a short film called Decent People. He currently lives in New York City, where he works as a freelance video journalist.

Thanks to Mr Chintzer for his sustained efforts of awesome. If that wasn't enough, we're closing the week with two shows we've been looking forward to for way too long. Dean from No Age told us a year or so back about GUN OUTFIT for the first time, espousing their greatness to such a degree we checked them out immediately and weren't disappointed, everything returns to Olympia. Gun Outfit make really wild and blurry songs which sound as dreamy as Cocteaus whilst still riding a smart noise punk horse. We've helped them book a UK tour (all shows on our website now) which kick off things in London tomorrow at The Grosvenor along with GUMMY STUMPS, HUMAN HAIR and GROPETOWN all supporting = perfect times!

Our other show this week will turn Friday night into a sweaty dance party and/or puppet show par excellence at The Dome in Tufnell Park. QUINTRON AND MISS PUSSYCAT bring the ultimate party and after playing last for UTR five years ago we've been trying to tempt them back across the pond ever since. MISS PUSSYCAT plays maracas and sings backup as well as entertaining all age groups with her highly amusing technicolor puppet shows. The Quintron / Miss Pussycat experience is one of barely controlled electronic chaos, small explosions, incredible clothes, and entertaining stories.

Yes, our new record from Peepholes and Apatt is released this week. It's a solid slab of heavy euphorics, throbbing hollers and oddball instrumentals all captured on "blood red" vinyl.

PEEPHOLES are Katia Barrett and Nick Carlisle who take turns singing, drumming and synth-prodding whilst smiling a lot and running back and forth on stage. Their songs, often cloaked in a cloud of echoing atmospherics, throb with raucous beats and jab you in the eye when you're not looking. It's party music for the lost at sea - sometimes primitive, sometimes soaring, but never boring. Their side of the 12" is called KINGDOM and features the following tracks: Airforce Trainer, Batwingy, Alpine Song, Sleep In The Shower, Pulling Cars and Carnivore

a.P.A.t.T. are a collective formed in Liverpool in 1998 and are pretty much impossible to classify! United by their branded nurses' outfits, but performing with everything from 2 to 7 members and going through a constant evolution of hardware and software changes, the group fuses mathy, synth-led moments with almost Klezmery freak-outs rendered in accordion, strings, brass and piano. Think the missing link between The Locust, Danielson Famile and A Hawk and A Hacksaw and you may be getting close! Their side of the 12" is called PAUL THE RECOD and features the following tracks: The Village Idiot, Candlelight, 10 Downing Street, Taxi Driver, I Fucking Hate Tamla Motown, Everybody's Talkin' and Maggot Fairy

This is one of our favourite tracks from Freddy's upcoming album 'New Love', out on Upset The Rhythm on November 9th!!! The video just premiered on Pitchfork today and you can watch it above. Directed by Michael Fierstein, the video inspired by "New Orleans" features a young women pushing away the idea of "love" that she fells she no longer wants and has been forced upon her. It was shot in the Silverlake and Echo Park districts of Los Angeles over the course of two days. Burning flowers are such a potent image I can't believe I haven't seen that before. DARK

IDIOT GLEE comes from Lexington, Kentucky and has a sound that lies somewhere between Jens Lekman’s thoughtful crooning and the classic auteur-pop of Brian Wilson or even Another Green World’s Brian Eno. James Friley, who is Idiot Glee, creates songs that resemble lo-fi, fuzzy, scratchy versions of tunes from a musical about the late 1950s directed by David Lynch. Friley describes what he does as "post-doo wop", the music being light on instrumentation and heavy on vocal harmonies, it's got a similar spectral feel to Perfume Genius but also sounds deeply haunted by the ghosts of Bobby Vee, Bobby Vinton and Bobby Darin. Idiot Glee have a 7" EP out now on Hop Hop from Lexington and a forthcoming single planned with Moshi Moshi, they are currently on tour in Europe with Women.

FUTURE ISLANDS are a new-wave dance band from North Carolina, now residing in the fertile "music capital of awesome", Baltimore. Future Islands play a terse yet passionate music wrought from a stripped back palette. Gerrit Welmers' cartwheeling synthesizer melodies tumble across the austere wilderness of William Cashion's post-punk bass pulse, driven ever forward by an ecstatic feel for rhythm. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the band's sound however, takes the form of Sam Herring's guttural vocal, delivered as Glen Danzig if he ever found himself in a Shakespearean tragedy. At times on its knees at others belted out like it's the end of the world, Herring's vocal lends a raw emotional warmth to the group's resolute synth-punk bounce. Debut album 'Wave Like Home' was released on Upset The Rhythm, whilst new album 'In Evening Air' came out on Thrill Jockey earlier this year to great reception.

MOON UNIT are an elevating Glaswegian trio consisting of Ruaraidh Sanachan (Nackt Insecten), Andreas Jonsson of Lanterns, and Peter Kelly. Moon Unit write songs with a cosmic magnitude whilst trying to keep things as telepathic as possible. They have a debut LP available through Krayon Recordings and a new record on Blackest Rainbow called 'Hell Horse And Heady Stratus'. The five tracks on this new LP make up one of the best psyche out, freak out full lengths we've heard this year. SLUSHY GUTS is a deliberate stripping back to basics, a concerted effort to write a song one could whistle and an exercise in embracing fear. At once melodic and dissonant, poetic and honest, intimate and claustrophobic, Slushy Guts is awkward pop music, naked and uncomfortable, a bundle of subtle unease and a maze of contradictions, a too long sentence, a load of heartfelt non-sense. It tried to just be happy but got confused and came out kinda sad.
