Upset The Rhythm presents…
PROTOMARTYR Tuesday 16 February Electric Brixton, Town Hall Parade, Brixton Hill, London, SW2 1RJ 7pm | £22.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/S8d7eed78742
PROTOMARTYR are a post-punk band from Detroit. Since their 2012 debut No Passion All Technique the group have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. Protomartyr - vocalist Joe Casey, guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard, and bassist Scott Davidson - have become synonymous with caustic, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry, the literal and oblique.
Upset The Rhythm will release a brand new album by uproarious Glasgow legends The Yummy Fur this September. Their first collection of new material in over 27 years, Everybody Talks About The Weather is seductive, ambiguous and exhilarating; a fast-paced flip through scenes from art, myth, life and fantasy; a witty whole made from glittering scraps. The band’s original incarnation (fronted by singer, songwriter and guitarist John McKeown from 1992 to 1999) morphed from making quick-hit cartoon-art songs to Eno and Cale-influenced creepers, populated by characters from McKeown’s life in Glasgow and the films, books and poetry that he lived a parallel life through. Everybody Talks About The Weather continues in this mode, boasting ten tracks as condensed and vital as their best work, with a new clarity of sound that ushers ambiguities to come into the light.
Today we’re sharing first single ‘Unity Over Europe’, a bruising stomp of song, lyrically playing host to three Mitford sisters amidst allusions to V2 rockets, Pynchon and a Bacon triptych. All this could be laboured in lesser hands, but cultural verbosity is second nature to The Yummy Fur, who transform all this source material into songs that are weird, sexy, funny and absurd. Meaning is not happily understood or flattened.
Everybody Talks About The Weather (out on Sep 25th) is available to pre-order now as a limited ‘blue sunshine’ LP, black LP, CD and digitally from all the best shops, as well as directly via Bandcamp here.
The Yummy Fur will mark this monumental occasion with a UK tour, featuring an album launch in London on Friday 9th October at The Lexington. Tickets are on sale now, with a Glasgow launch to be announced soon, look out!
