TALK NORMAL are Brooklyn duo, Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro, dealing out songs that sparkle with melody and dissonance. After years of friendship, Talk Normal first emerged on the NYC music scene in 2007, initially releasing demos, cassettes and their Secret Cog vinyl EP. Following the 2009 release of their debut album Sugarland on Rare Book Room Records, Talk Normal released a handful of 7"s (including a split 7" with Thurston Moore on Fast Weapons Records) and shared the stage with the likes of Sonic Youth, Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Zola Jesus. Jarring rhythms and feedback-drenched guitar tones grace, recent sophmore album, Sunshine's nine surprisingly songful tunes - creating a sound informed by their predecessors (Cocteau Twins, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson & Creatures), but strikingly new. Tracks like "Bad Date", "Cover", and "Hurricane" carry almost a meditative emotional energy, where others like "Sunshine" and "Shot This Time" err on the side of explosive driving rock. Ambro & Register's combined voices often volley back and forth, each providing equal contributions to vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation. Combined with Register's flowing, nearly-drony riffs and Ambro's finely choreographed beats, the end result is a natural sonic cohesion to wonder at.

VERITY SUSMAN probes new territory with her solo project after a decade as lead singer of experimental rock band Electrelane. Using music, visuals and text, her live shows create a world of psychedelic alienation, embracing the subversive possibilities of awkwardness. Often appearing in drag, her saxophone becomes an organ of musical and gender performance, confronting audiences with a queer female masculinity that is at once serious, humorous, angry and uncomfortable. At times ironic, often passionate and full of joyous heartbreak, Verity takes the audience into a collage of exploratory soundscapes, woven through surreal reconstructions of lesbian pulp romance novels and sci-fi slash fiction tales.

SIMON JOYNER & THE GHOSTS are a living, breathing entity; a full six piece band, growing out of Joyner's double-LP record 'Ghosts' released last Summer on his own Sing, Eunuchs! label. Simon Joyner should require no introduction, but despite plaudits from everyone from John Peel to Conor Oberst, who cites Joyner as a primary influence, he remains a cult figure. His sterling reputation is mostly built on thirteen albums of lyrically astute, musically dense, uncompromising songs. As a wordsmith he is peerless, often compared to both Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, while his singing voice alternately conjures an emotionally turbulent Neil Young (think “Speakin’ Out”) and Gordon Gano circa “Country Death Song.” But Joyner’s songs also bear the influence of more modern mavericks, revealing a sharp appreciation for the fringes of the American and UK underground. It’s not for nothing he cites the Dead C’s raucous 'Harsh 70’s Reality' as one of the handful of double albums that inspired 'Ghosts'. For lovers of lyrics, that fast-perishing breed, 'Ghosts' is Christmas morning. Listening to it, you may frequently find yourself covering your mouth in disbelief, exclaiming “Oh shit!” like someone just dropped a particularly scathing hip-hop metaphor. The music matches the intensity of the words. Joyner’s band is an intuitive organism never content to merely ‘back up’ the singer. Each member of the group suffuses the environments of these songs with unusual color without ever overplaying or subordinating. With, 'Ghosts', Simon Joyner couldn't have made a more extreme example of an album that so handsomely rewards total immersion and a live show incorporating guitars, viola, pedal steel, bass and drums spells out something equally special.

EMPEROR X is the project name of American songwriter and noise pop saboteur C. R. Matheny. In 2004, Matheny dropped his pursuit of a master’s degree in physics to self-release a string of critically acclaimed lo-fi speed folk albums. His releases grabbed the attention of NPR, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, Tiny Mix Tapes and many others. The UK’s Plan B Magazine called his music “a swollen interfusion of capricious brilliance”. His music has been described as part Daniel Johnston part Dan Deacon. His songs are always catchy with lyrics that will pull heartstrings. His sing along tunes and unstoppable energy has brought Emperor X to art galleries, bars, bookstores, university symposiums, college radio stations, garbage-strewn pedestrian tunnels, and one very confused laser tag arena in Connecticut. Matheny currently lives in Los Angeles where he writes and records new music from the top floor of a tenement building overlooking the megaphone preachers, fake ID salesmen, and tamaleros of MacArthur Park. His new album Western Teleport was released on Bar/None Records last year.

DAVID KENNETH NANCE recently stepped out of his burned out basement in Omaha, Nebraska and steeped himself in the city of angels, provoking collective grief and inciting small riots in the hearts of the house show universe here. Rocker and singer-songwriter from that catchy, shambolic mess called The Prairies, he also plays lead guitar and shouts in Simon Joyner’s band, the Ghosts. His forthcoming, vinyl debut on Grapefruit Records, “Actor’s Diary,” was recorded late at night alone in Joyner’s warehouse studio, Casa de los Fantasmas, over a two month period leading up to his west coast pilgrimage, this is anguish and expectation and meditations on what was, is, and might be in the artist’s life. Channeling Jim Shepard, heroin-era Stones and New Zealand’s notorious Jefferies brothers through broken and poorly repaired gear, Nance rock is indeed the new pasture!

BRILLIANT COLORS are a four-piece from San Francisco, inspired by post-punk fervor, the spiky pop of C86 and early Flying Nun / Creation missives. Their 2009 album, 'Introducing', is one of the finest debuts in recent memory, and they followed it with 7"s on Slumberland and Make a Mess and a European tour with La La Vasquez that led to the release of another great single on Germs of Youth. Most recently, they teamed up with Belfast’s brilliant Girls Names to release a split 7". All of these singles were recorded with Oakland garage phenom Ty Segall, who spiked the ladies’ punk-pop swirl with his own special grit. Their most recent album 'Again And Again', came out last Summer on Slumberland, displaying song-writing as infectious as ever, only now the tunes are now more carefully arranged pushing the band to something as elemental as pop gets. The mood is confessional and late-night dreamy; Jess' unadorned vocals and eloquent lyrics are personal, direct and atmospherically deployed, mixed in with the songs like another instrument. They can be heard to great effect on tougher songs like "Back To The Tricks" and "Painting Truths," tempering those tunes' punchy dynamics with their melodic sensibility. Add in classic-sounding stormers like "Cult Face" and "How Much Younger" and you have all the makings of another great Brilliant Colors album, one that shows how finely they've honed their own unique brand punk-flecked crash-pop. This show sees them on day one of tour, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, touting a new flexi 7" called 'I Was Born A Fantasist', exciting!

THE PROPER ORNAMENTS make a thrillingly taut and melodic pop indebted both to the sun balm'd West Coast and the driving, terse rhythms of the British Invasion and C86 pop, centered around the close partnership of frontmen Max Claps and James Hoare (also of Veronica Falls). In 2010 were joined by bassist Michael Lovett and Let's Wrestle frontman Wesley Patrick Gonzalez, releasing a 7" on San Francisco label Make A Mess Records. 2011 saw them release a self-titled EP on No Pain In Pop, proving the band as purveyors of abrupt, perfect pop, jet propelled by super compressed drum production and the pair's DNA tight vocal interplay.

Jaap Blonk and Phil Minton have been pioneering in the field of sound poetry and free vocalisation for several decades each, originally a saxophonist and trumpeter respectively they both abandoned those instruments long ago to concentrate on the boundless  instrument that is the human voice.  They will be joined today by two of the UKs upcoming sound poets/experimental musicians, Dylan Nyoukis & Luke Poot, for a full on all vocal quartet that threatens to blow minds and full heads with joy.

ADAM BOHMAN's personal approach to music has essentially always been acoustic, but due to his close involvement with live electronics (he is a founder member of Morphogenesis), his sounds have very often been subjected to signal processing. The Bohman aesthetic can be a dense and tangled thing to unpick and describe. Various and nefarious sounds and artistic influences merge and collide, Varèsian sound montage supporting spoken word material sourced from a pub menu, or frenetic juxtapositions between amplified shoe brushes and a frenzied tape cut-up of 17th Century instruments. Sound art which oscillates between states of the absurd and sonically grotesque, and highly articulate explorations of extra-musical sound.

SAL MINEO sits at a crossroads between OXBOW's EUGENE S. ROBINSON [lyrics/voice] and XIU XIU's JAMIE STEWART [music], a pure/impure distillate of experimentalism based on 30 second to 3 minute long focused bursts of sonic crime, that plumbs the cooling depths of a pleasure cruised death trip. These two undisputed heavyweights of musical and emotional non-compromise, whose music leaves tender bruises by whatever sweet blow it is rendered, are ready to crack rooms in two with their high precision silencer of a duo show, combining the best and most free-roaming of both their artistic domains. In the midnight midst of a decline that found it's near inevitable conclusion in a Los Angeles alley at the wrong end of an edged weapon, the band Sal Mineo, as influenced by the man, is much more about the accretion of failure, cinematic and otherwise, than it is about the now almost forgotten rise.'Sal Mineo' the album is due on Important in March 2013.

EUGENE S. ROBINSON puts the work in. From past collaborative efforts with Lydia Lunch, Marianne Faithfull, Gus Van Sant, Steve Albini, DJ Rupture, Bill Cosby, Kathy Acker, Allen Ginsberg, Jarboe, Old Man Gloom, and a passel of side projects passing from electronica to post-punk, Robinson's work with his primary group OXBOW covers two decades of chaotic complexity, 8 some-odd releases, a few sound tracks and even a few books. JAMIE STEWART, over the course of 8 records, and even more compilations, collaborations [Michael Gira, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Larsen, Shearwater], splits, singles, live albums, and an endless touring schedule that covers the globe and then again, has embraced the art as everything ideal with a stevedore's dedication to the work harder, longer, better, faster than many others/any others ethos. And Stewart’s multi-instrumentalism and obsession with structural chaos and clarity seals whatever deal needs sealing.

DEATH SHANTIES is a new mixed media balls-to-the-wall Free Jazz group featuring Alex Neilson (drums), Sybren Renema (alto/ baritone sax) and Lucy Stein (painting/ projections). The group combine references to Medieval music, Sea Shanties and Field Hollars with the ecstatic cry of classic 1960s fire music. DEAD DAYS BEYOND HELP are Alex Ward (guitar/vocals) and Jem Doulton (drums). Alex Ward, initially known as a improvising clarinettist with the likes of Derek Bailey and Eugene Chadbourne, has in recent years also been heard playing guitar with improv power-trio N.E.W. (with Steve Noble and John Edwards), and in collaborations at Cafe Oto with such avant-rock luminaries as Tatsuya Yoshida, Shoji Hano, Weasel Walter, Thurston Moore and Chris Corsano. Dead Days Beyond Help teams Alex with virtuosic drummer Jem Doulton (also the man behind the work of disturbing pop visionary Mr. Ron Jetson) for an unrestricted exploration of the possibilities of the guitar/drums duo. As with their 2009 debut "Access Denied!", DDBH's latest release "The Game Face" (out February 2013 on Copepod) mixes intricate and breakneck instrumentals with structurally-straightforward but emotionally scouring song material.

Huge thanks go out to everyone for coming to our Pete Swanson show last week, what a powerful performance; both sinuous and truly visceral! Those same qualities are both going to be echoed at tomorrow's show for Portugal duo TROPA MACACA too. TROPA MACACA enshrine a tribal-digital form of instinctual electronic music that's as infectious as it is adventurous. Joining them on tour is HELM, who released one of our favourite records from last year, "Impossible Symmetry" on Pan. Opening the show at The Sebright Arms we have mesmeric bucolics from THE FRACTAL SKULLS, whilst LONDONEARS will be DJing for us much weird-out jams throughout the night. Really looking forward to it!

TROPA MACACA are the ambient-noise duo of André Abel and Joana da Conceição and have been going strong from their Portugal home base since 2005, whilst glooping out into the world with releases via Qbico and Siltbreeze. The newly released follow up to 2009′s 'Sensação Do Princípio' on Siltbreeze, 'Ectoplasma' finds Tropa Macaca moving to Software Records (the sub-label of Mexican Summer owned by Oneohtrix Point Never’s Dan Lopatin) and was described by Dummy Magazine as “a lesson in pure sound design as potent as SND or Aaron Dilloway, yet filled with an unctuous listenability, a primordial, glowing slime that’s as addictive yet stately as the best in the genre”, which pretty much captures their sublimating electronic trip.

HELM is the solo project of Luke Younger, one half of the London/Berlin noise duo Birds Of Delay, and label boss at Alterstock Records. He has just released “Impossible Symmetry”, his third full length record, on the brilliant Berlin based PAN label. It marks a new chapter in the artists' canon as it's his first to be informed by live performance rather than studio experimentation, incorporating more extensive use of electronic elements and moments of rhythmic dark ambience recalling the outputs from early Coil and Cabaret Voltaire at times.

THE FRACTAL SKULLS is the musical project of 25 year old Buckinghamshire based Chris Smith. Using the basic building blocks of analogue generated loops and minimalist drone, and drawing influences from the classic Krautrock of Cluster and Harmonia, as well as dub pioneers like King Tubby, The Fractal Skulls weave subtly evolving patterns of hypnotic sound to produce kosmische music that transcends the sum of its deceptively simple parts. Debut full length LP, ‘Rayleigh Scattering’, was recently released on Subexotic Records. The album was composed over a two year period during which Chris travelled widely, and the music is steeped in the atmospheres of locations as far afield as Croatia, Paris, and New York City, as well as the bucolic surrounds of the English countryside in which much of the work was laid down.

'February Makes A Bridge' is a double record label showcase uniting Upset The Rhythm with Night School in the aim of taking the DIY concert out of it's expected parameters and into interesting new pastures to enhance the potency of the music and its effect on the audience.

Taking it's name from one of George Herbert's proverbs, 'February Makes A Bridge' not only signifies a coming together to leap into the sunshine of the new year, it also attempts to link the event with its setting, The Yard Theatre. The Yard Theatre is a newly built raked amphitheatre in the Elizabethan style constructed in a once dormant warehouse in Queen's Yard, Hackney Wick. Herbert was born during the reign of 'The Virgin Queen' and we can hear his February echo in this building, with this event.

'February Makes A Bridge' will take place on Saturday 16 February from 1pm - 11pm at The Yard Theatre.

PETE SWANSON is a New York-based musician, once a member of the exhilarating noise duo Yellow Swans, he’s been making plenty of solo music since they disbanded in 2008. Straddling a line between free guitar noise and singed electronics, Swanson's recent album on Type, ‘Man With Potential’, shows that Pete now lives in a techno multiverse, where the dank pulsing soundscapes that helped birth his old band have only got wilder. Whilst Yellow Swans used pulses to underpin their cascading white noise, Swanson puts the chattering 140bpm percussion at center stage, not least on the album’s opening track, charmingly titled ‘Misery Beat’. Setting the stage for the music to follow, we are thrown into chattering synthesized squeals and dense kick drums before being smacked around the head with the kind of slippery noise lead we’ve not heard since ‘Going Places’. This is Birmingham techno filtered through the mists of the Pacific Northwest, and all the better for it! Elsewhere ‘Remote View’ explores a more downtempo sound; coming across like post apocalyptic house music as heard from a club bathroom. With ‘Man With Potential’ and it's follow up EP 'Pro Style', Pete Swanson has crafted his most defining statements to date; a blistering collection of contemporary club music with a deafening noise twist. It might not be easy listening, but who said life had to be easy?

MARK FELL operates uncompromisingly on the bleeding edge of digital music production. He's in possession of a beautifully rare talent; the ability to make highly academic music with an innately, dare we say, accessible edge. He himself and many others may not agree, but there's something so listenable to his rhythmically-driven and melodically aware style that we can't help but hear him in that context. As half of the seriously goalpost moving SND, and more recently responsible for the unspooled but strangely disciplined house productions on Editions Mego's Sensate Focus 12" series, one might've guessed that the Sheffield-based artist was responsible, given his prior form deconstructing garage and techno. It's Fell's digital synthesis where the real magic lies. The dreamy melodies and uncanny repetitions, not to mention the sheer unctuousness of the sounds employed lend him a sonic topology of his very own that well worth losing yourself in. RAIME (DJ set) are Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead, an enigmatic London-based duo seeking to re-establish electronic composition as a physical and emotionally inquisitive force. Their debut album, 'Quarter Turns Over A Living Line' was released on sharp London label Blackest Ever Black last November to rave reviews, and this show sees them DJing throughout the evening.
