HALO HALO, ADVANCE BASE and ILM

Hello again!
This week we released HALO HALO's brilliant self-titled debut album. Its a kaleidoscopic trip of trailing banjo, bass, drum thump and journey-bound vocals, looped into a ritual dance music, exploding with unbridled feeling! It's available in all good record stores across the globe and from our web shop (http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/) now too! Check out this video for their song 'Taro Taro Taro' for full immersion or you can see them play tomorrow at our show for ADVANCE BASE.

ADVANCE BASE is Owen Ashworth of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone's new bittersweet project. He'll be performing tomorrow night at The Lexington with Robert Stillman opening the show, live music starting from 8.30pm, tickets available on the door too. Also, if that wasn't already enough opportunity, we'll also be selling Halo Halo's brand new album, along with many other records, shirts, posters at our Upset The Rhythm stall at Spitalfield's Market this Saturday as part of the inspired Independent Label Market, bargains galore, poster ahoy! Read on for all the show details and future listings…

ADVANCE BASE is the new project by Chicago, Illinois singer songwriter, and producer, Owen Ashworth (formerly Casiotone for the Painfully Alone). 'A Shut-In’s Prayer' is Ashworth’s first full-length release in over three years, and his first under the name Advance Base. Recorded at home and in piano practice rooms at the Chicago Public Library,' A Shut-In’s Prayer' is an intimate collection of deliberately crafter but decidedly lo-fi torch songs, waltzes and ballads. Accompanying himself on his Rhodes 54 electric piano, Ashworth sings nostalgic stories about lost loves, childhood friends, estranged siblings, and hard feelings over simple drum machine rhythms and spare percussion. The additional arrangements that fill out the ten songs intertwine gentle upright piano melodies and expansive electric bass, filling the spaces between plainly-sang harmony vocals and strummed autosharp chords, with the occasional creaking floorboard or snapping reverb spring, to remind you of the cramped rooms where this album was recorded. It is a different sound than one might expect from the guy from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but Ashworth’s keen ear for melody and idiosyncratic skill as a lyricist have only improved in recent years, pushing his memorable song-writing in all new directions.  At age 35, Ashworth has a lot of music left in him, and he’s just getting started again. For his first shows in the UK as Advance Base, Owen will be performing solo, accompanying himself of electric piano & sampler.  He will perform songs from 'A Shut-In’s Prayer', 'The World Is In A Bad Fix Everywhere' EP (his tribute to gospel & outsider music pioneer Washington Phillips, out now on Orindal Records), as well previewing brand new songs from a forthcoming album.

HALO HALO are three friends living in South London, writing a primal, hyper-melodic music that makes you want to dance into the mountains and throw a rope around the moon. Rachel Horwood (vocals, banjo, also of the band Trash Kit), Jack Barraclough (vocals, drums) and Gill Partington (bass, modded-keyboard) came together just two years ago inspired by a shared love of the naturalism of folk music and the freedom of punk. Naming their band after a very colourful, refreshing hotchpotch of a dessert from the Philippines (where Rachel’s family are from) the same random delight and faith in surprise is central to their music, shot through in clattering technicolour by traditional forms of Filipino music like Tiboli and the mystical chanting and sacred percussion of the Ifugao. Halo Halo are not only reaching back to their own ancestry, but are tapping into something seemingly outside of time, parts equally magical and sonically enthralling. Halo Halo's amazing debut album will be released by Upset The Rhythm on July 8th!

ROBERT STILLMAN is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. His work lives at the intersections of Song, Sonic Arts, and History. Many of his projects reflect an awareness of process, location, and medium, and they draw upon Popular and Folk forms, most recently, American pre-jazz and rural music. As a performer, Robert tries to adapt his mode of performance to answer questions posed by the music and life. This has led to a solo style of performance in which he accompanies playing the piano with modified marching-band style percussion. Sometimes he also uses tape collage play-back as well. Archaic Future Recordings is Robert Stillman's home, focussing on the physicality of the recording by presenting products that are one-of-a-kind, handmade, and unified in their music and presentation.

"YARD PARTY is a three day music festival presented by Upset The Rhythm, taking place at Hackney Wick's tremendous and intrepid Yard Theatre. Focussing on a wide variety of international underground music from folk to noise by way of damaged romantic pop, Yard Party's intention is to haul the DIY concert out of it's expected parameters and into 'interesting pastures new' to enhance the potency of the music, its effect on the audience and to deconstruct the passive nature of what witnessing live music in 2013 shouldn't be. YARD PARTY will take place on Thursday 15 August and Friday 16 August from 5pm - midnight, and then on Saturday 17 August from noon - midnight, all-dayer style! and will take place at The Yard Theatre. The full address for the event is The Yard Theatre, Unit 2, Queen's Yard, Hackney Wick, E9 5EN"
