MONOTONY this afternoon and ROSE MCDOWALL this Thursday in London!

Alright!
I trust you’re having a leisurely bank holiday! Many thanks to all of you who came to see Sir Richard Bishop play beneath the big gun last Friday, what an artist, what a venue/church/ship! We’re super busy with shows this week with The Julie Ruin and Prolapse both in town, those dates are all sold out but never fear we still have tickets for MONOTONY’s 7” launch this afternoon and for ROSE MCDOWALL this Thursday with THE WHARVES. Read on for all the particulars on those, plus we just added a show for PEGA MONSTRO in August as part of their first UK tour!

MONOTONY // 7” Launch //
THE WORMS
DAS BOOTS THE CHEMIST
Monday 25 May (Bank Holiday Matinee)
Power Lunches, 446 Kingsland Road, Haggerston, E8 4AE

MONOTONY are an evolving band of future humans making truly irregular punk, not quite comparable to anything else. 'Weird' is a meaningless platitude, and 'art punk' is a classifier that shouldn't be required. Celebrating the release of a split 7” on Upset The Rhythm with their sister band Sauna Youth, Monotony are set to detonate the basement of Power Lunches with their head-first primal punk. "Acquisitions, no ambition. Jumping off the balcony," they intone over the swaggering rhythm over their new song ‘Luxury Flats’. In the song, Monotony come face to face with Ballard's high-rise nightmare set upon rapidly gentrifying London out of all reason. The second track on the 7”, "Human Troll," is a boldly brash track lodged with sloping riffs and hollered vocals. "Human Troll lives in the river, cement mattress making him shiver!”. Monotony also have some forthcoming releases on Faux Discx and 80/81 Records, so keep your ears open for those too!

THE WORMS are a guitar-n-drums London duo consisting of one Cold Puma and one Omi Palone. Describing themselves as “petty prannies proffering pithy punk produce”, there’s a straight forward, bare-bones immediacy to their solid stop/start missives.

DAS BOOTS THE CHEMIST formed at the end of the crap year of 2014. Approaching their songs as raw statements vs intricately genius jokes, Das Boots throw some conversationally direct lyrics on top of a great pile of spindly guitar lines and bombastic drummage. Their music is a bit like punk, post punk, rockabilly, and classic rock. They often play the bits wrong and then scream because it all gets a bit you know. They write a new song during every rehearsal and then discard it because it sounds too much like a song by one of their friend’s bands. Sometimes one song that only vaguely sounds like something else slips through the net and that’s how they built their set up.

ROSE MCDOWALL
THE WHARVES
Thursday 28 May
St Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, King's Cross, NW1 1UL

ROSE MCDOWALL’s trajectory from punk provocateur to chart-subverting pop star to underground neo-folkster has been one peppered with unknowns and adventure. McDowall began her career in her hometown of Glasgow, operating within the nascent punk scene with her first group The Poems. After a meteoric rise to pop stardom with Strawberry Switchblade (along with friend Jill Bryson), McDowall submerged herself in the post-industrial landscape, recording with the likes of Coil, Boyd Rice and Current 93. Shortly after, she began recording with her own group Sorrow, before disappearing into the underground, re-surfacing for occasional performances only. Throughout this year, Night School Records are attempting to tell the story of Glasgow’s wayward daughter through a schedule of reissues and unreleased material. Spanning Rose’s 34 year career, the project will include reissues and unreleased recordings alongside unseen photographs and new sleeve notes. Record Store Day saw the first fruit of this collaboration, an official release of the unapproved ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’ 12” single, and it hasn’t left our turntable since. This will be a rare concert from Rose with a full band, in the year of her long-overdue reappraisal, not one to miss!

THE WHARVES, who hail from Ireland, France and England, sport startling duel vocals, courtesy of Gemma Fleet (bass) and Dearbhla Minogue (guitar), which hang gracefully over their minimal rock format. They invoke the reverberated spook of 60's girl groups, the mid-fi guitar crunch of Kim Deal's The Amps, the vocal flavours of The Roches and the narrative and structural panache of 70's progressive folk. Marion Andrau's thunderous drumming drives through these compositions, ensuring the wealth of disparate influences remain focused and celebratory. In 2013 they released a split LP with The Rosy Crucifixion on Glasgow's Soft Power Recordings and released a full length LP last year called ‘At Bay’ with Nottingham's Gringo Records.
