Morning all!
Upset The
Rhythm is ecstatic to announce the release of Ravioli Me Away's new album! ‘Living Is a Myth’ will be released worldwide on
November 11th. Ravioli Me Away are Sian Dorrer, Rosie Ridgway and Alice Theobald and
more recently, have recruited Monika Kroll as an intermittent member. Un-defined by genre, Ravioli Me Away’s
high energy, dangerously ambitious and delusional jazzy-post-pop-punk-hip-funk
sound with stylistically schizophrenic motifs span all-known past, present and
future human cultures and sub-cultures.
This
is social realism soaked through with a heady dose of fantasy, idiosyncratic
poetics, keyboard flurries and vocal vicissitudes described as “vintage
drag-queen Bananarama Youtube footage played with twice the sass and in double
time with an incredulous broadband connection reflected in the eyes of a much
overworked and downright exhausted Julie Burchill on acid.”
‘Living
is a Myth’ is an incredible listen,
exploring symptoms of society through its overlapping patterns of ideas and
music. Always inventive, clatter-some drumbeats drive the songs ever onwards,
whilst the bass plunges through the fantastical worlds emerging from the woozy
pools of formidable keyboard tone. RMA see themselves as agents, pointing
out phenomenon and responding to it. This is conducted largely through the
band’s contagious approach to song. ‘Wow’, the very first track from the album
is a good case in point:
The
gatefold LP will be accompanied by an A1 poster of the band, an orange slice of
vinyl and a lyric book with download code. “I’m
nostalgic for now, I traveled far ahead, I’m looking back with great affection
– at this moment” sing RMA on the album’s title track. It’s hard to imagine
a lyric that encapsulates better what RMA are all about. Ravioli Me Away
provide the commentary to our internal narrative as we edge through life from
one nostalgic moment to the next. They witness, comment and thus help us
identify the means by which we must escape ourselves. ‘Living Is A Myth’ is
available to pre-order now!
A free
launch party for the record will be taking place on November 3rd
too, on a boat, on the Thames! Ravioli
Me Away and Design A Wave will
both perform, plus Ed Lehan and Mike Levitt & James Janco will be
DJing throughout the night, keeping things buoyant and the good times afloat.
Full details can be found in our listings section at the end of this!
Talking
of shows we have two fast approaching on the horizon for you. Monday evening
sees us pitch up at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club for an evening spent
with Calvin Johnson (in Selector Dub
Narcotic mode), Catenary Wires and Sidney. Groovy times as Calvin would
attest! Whilst on October 25th we return to The Forge in Camden,
joined by two of our favourite solo musicians operating on the fringes of folk,
blues and minimalism; Marisa Anderson
and Laura Cannell. You can read much
more about both shows following this, links to tickets and music included,
thanks for your time!

CALVIN
JOHNSON's work in
underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local
community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines,
organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands.
Calvin established K Records, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982. In 1993
Calvin founded Dub Narcotic Studio in which he has documented the work of
Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little
Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration
and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic
Sound System. The decade of the double zeroes saw Calvin Johnson set into the
world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. Now
that the one-zeroes have hit, Calvin is working on his new project Selector Dub
Narcotic. Selector Dub Narcotic is known to mix the genres dancehall, soul,
punk, garage, R&B, rock steady, bubblegum and rockabilly with assorted
curiosities of the current underground music scene.
THE
CATENARY WIRES were
formed in 2014 when Amelia and Rob (ex-Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research,
Tender Trap) moved out of London. Unlike some of their earlier incarnations,
THE CATENARY WIRES are minimalist, melancholy, and a little woozy. Originally
forming the band just for themselves at home, Rob and Amelia started playing
songs on their daughter's 3/4 size acoustic guitar. They are still refusing to
give it back. The band agreed to play a first gig in public at the Arnolfini in
Bristol, on 3 May 2014, in support of a new film about Sarah Records. Since
then, they have played several shows around the UK, and will soon be performing
in Tokyo, Madrid and New York. The Catenary Wires function as a simple
two-piece live, but have created a lusher sound on their first album, Red Red
Skies, which was released by Elefant Records last year.
SIDNEY began in friendship. George Haberis
and Henry Withers have known each other for some time, even
before playing in Lovvers and Prize Pets, and made music
together as Sharm El Shakes; when the bass player moved to a rent controlled
apartment in Manhattan they couldn't let their snappy union
of incisively cracking guitar parts and observations about
cities and the melancholy of romance be lost forever so they
started Sidney with Prize Pets drummer Joe Coope & Robert
"Sluggo" Hughes on Bass.

MARISA
ANDERSON channels the
history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is
fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that
re-imagine the landscape of American music. Her deeply original work applies
elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical
music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music. On her
newest release, ‘Into the Light’ (2016), Anderson leaves Appalachia and the
Delta blues behind as she journeys west, into the heart of the sun. Written as
the soundtrack to an imaginary science-fiction western film, the record’s ten
songs trace the story of a visitor lost and wandering on the shifting
borderlands of the Sonoran desert. ‘Into the Light’ is shimmering and
cinematic, the pieces built around pedal steel, lap steel and electric piano as
well as Anderson’s signature guitar sound.
Originally from Northern California,
Anderson dropped out of college at age nineteen to walk across the US and
eventually landed in Portland, Oregon, where she currently lives. Classically
trained, she honed her skills playing in country, jazz and circus bands. In
2009 she released her first solo gutiar recrod, ‘The Golden Hour’ followed by
‘Mercury'(2011) and ‘Traditional and Public Domain Songs'(2013). More recently,
she has been in demand as a collaborator and composer, contributing to
recordings by Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux among others,
and creating music for short films.
LAURA
CANNELL is based in rural
East Anglia, allowing her work to draw on the emotional influences of the
landscape and the sometimes dissonant chords of early and medieval music. With
deconstructed bow and the extraordinary sound of double recorder, Laura’s music
has grown out of unearthed fragments that became improvised pieces. Her music
encompasses both wild animal calls and long forgotten liturgical fragments,
which drawn through Laura’s music seem to originate from the same, ahistorical
place. With a background in traditional folk, early and experimental music, she
creates a solitary minimalist chamber music, where one player makes all the
harmonies. Her third album ‘Simultaneous Flight Movement’, released this month,
was recorded live in one take inside Southwold Lighthouse in Suffolk and is a
collection of semi-composed semi-improvised pieces from the edge of England
which seek to dissolve borders, move away from formal structure and to
re-imagine a sonic landscape unrestricted by time or origin. This follows her
two acclaimed records ‘Quick Sparrows over the Black Earth’ (2014) and ‘Beneath
Swooping Talons’ (2015).
Laura has established herself as a
versatile live performer with a unique ability to conjure up transcendental and
otherworldly atmospherics in all kinds of contexts. She is also a frequent
collaborator with the likes of Richard Dawson, Rhodri Davis, Charles Haywood
and Mark Fell.
Thank you for listening, have a
fantastic weekend!
