SUPREME DICKS
PLATINUM VISION
CHALAQUE
Thursday 9 May
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/205122

SUPREME DICKS are an experimental rock group formed in 1984 in Amherst, Massachussetts by Jon Shere, Steve Shavel and Danny Oxenberg. Their glorious music combines dissonant lo-fi noise, avant-garde, and psychedelic sounds to warped song structures. Rising out of the same scene that produced Dinosaur Jr, Supreme Dicks were vital contributors to the lo-fi and avant garde genres. The band’s constantly revolving line-up (Lou Barlow was a Dick now and again) centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, and Jim Spring, whose psychedelic-yet-twangy brand of rock’n'roll came out of the band’s roots at Hampshire College in the Reagan era. The Dicks released a clutch of incredible records - three albums, a single, a split single and a 12" EP - over a four-year period before not-so-much disbanding as dispersing at the end of 1996. This slow, brooding, hugely affecting body of warped psychedelic work was released as a box set by Jagjaguwar in 2011 entitled 'Breathing And Not Breathing'. In 2012, Supreme Dicks came back together to play a limited number of shows in the US, making this ever-so-rare European tour their first major jaunt in almost 17 years. In the live setting, the band upholds a tradition of inviting others to play with them onstage - musicians who have done so include Beck, Dan Kapelovitz and Ariel Pink. Their legendary Amherst jams were known to continue for anywhere up to 15 hours at a time (although, on this tour, we'll be looking at more traditional set lengths). This is going to be the unforgettable!

PLATINUM VISION is Matt Mottel from Talibam!'s new sophisticat-jazz out project. Keyboards, wailing guitar, bass and brass all spinning out a landscape for Matt's (often absurdist) slouchy blues vocal to walk out, leading you serenly through equal parts calm and chaos. All expectors of the unexpected will be primed.
http://platinumvision.bandcamp.com/

CHALAQUE aka Nick Mitchell of Manchester's Golden Lab records, will be providing some exceptionally wonky guitar noise. At first, you might think you’ve got Nick pegged as a psych guitarist with stock moves, but listen for a few minutes and you’ll suddenly wonder where the hell you are. One guitar, two amps, feedback stacked into walls and high-pitched soloing.

DIRTY BEACHES
FEMMINIELLI
PLANTAGENET 3
Monday 13 May
Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, 42 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/211298

DIRTY BEACHES is the sound of waves against a picturesque and putrid shore, the silent rumble of a Chevy as it speeds by in slow motion. Sparse but condensed, relentlessly edging forward: this is music for locomotive travel, for racing your weary motorcycle through neon archways and into tunnels at dusk. The man behind Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai; solo performer, sound-smith, and trans-Pacific nomad. Born in Taiwan, Hungtai has made Toronto, Honolulu, Montreal, and Vancouver his homes. Like Bo Didley or minimalist synth provocateurs Suicide, Dirty Beaches’ compositions are not so much stripped down as refined to their essence. Drum loops entrance, Hungtai’s croon enchants, and the yearning melodies draped overtop belie as much a sense of haunting mystery as they do romanticism and wry humour.
http://dirtybeaches.bandcamp.com/

FEMMINIELLI is Montréal producer Bernardino Femminielli, an artist whose already left a significant mark on the Canadian music scene before releasing his third album 'Double Invitation', having toured as a live member of Dirty Beaches and producing some tracks for Montreal pop-star-in-waiting Jef Barbara. But on 'Double Invititation', Femminielli has made it clear that he is possibly the best current Italo songwriter/producer in the world. Drawing equally from the camps of Moroder and Gainsbourg, his music is divided between creepy synthpop singles like "Chauffeur" and "A Que Quieres Jugar" and epic long-form dark disco. Carefully constructed down to the last detail, it sounds so authentic it's difficult to believe it isn't from the late 1970s. 'Double Invitation' is out on Desire Records.
https://soundcloud.com/femminielli

PLANTAGENET 3 like to think of their music as a misguided combination of spaghetti Western soundtracks, 1960s surf/spy-theme guitars and minimalist rock, with the end result being a bit like Young Marble Giants covering Ennio Morricone. They've released one previous single and an album, been featured by the likes of Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music, as well as blogs like This is Fake DIY and the 405, and Rough Trade who once described them as invoking "the ghost of Joe Meek and the most searching of 90s post rockisms to form something shimmering, mysterious and beguiling".

Thanks for your continued support and for reading this wayfaring missive!
One last thing before we go! If you need something brilliant to do on Sunday evening make sure you check out SUNK SEASON at Cafe Oto who have organised an awesome evening of synth sorcery and knew-age experimentalism, it's going to be the best, more here: http://www.cafeoto.co.uk/sunk-season-the-innercity-asterism-tidal.shtm
Thank you and goodnight!

PARENTHETICAL GIRLS and SUPREME DICKS next week!!!

Whoop!
Bank Holiday looming! Thanks to everyone for coming to our BARN OWL show earlier this week, great performances all round! Loved it! Next week we have two more brilliant shows lined up for you. Monday sees us back at The Lexington this time with UTR faves PARENTHETICAL GIRLS, the tremendous ERGO PHIZMIZ and our friend Avi's new project VOLUNTEERS PARK, now that's what we call juxtaposition! All over the shop and better for it! Then, next Thursday we're overjoyed to have SUPREME DICKS grace our stage, after a brief 17 year gap, true legends of the weirdo rock underground, it's a real privilege to get to work on this ultra-rare show! Plus Matt from Talibam!'s new PLATINUM VISION band and CHALAQUE from Manchester will also be ripping it up. Read on, on, on, for all you need to know and probably more…

PARENTHETICAL GIRLS are an experimental pop band formed back in 2003 in Everett, Washington, currently living in Portland, Oregon. Throughout their bewilderingly unorthodox discography, Parenthetical Girls have become a singular force of obsessional pop. It's a peculiarity that they've learned to embrace, a single-minded conviction that pours itself over every corner of their latest album, 'Privilege' (Marriage Records / Slender Means). Returning to the band's core membership of vocalist/creative director Zac Pennington and producer/arranger Jherek Bischoff (composer and collaborator with David Byrne, Amanda Palmer, Xiu Xiu, etc), 'Privilege' retains the group's signature ambitions: visceral intimacy, camp austerity, lurid eloquence, while confidently embracing the perfect pop pastiche their previous records only alluded to. Anchored by Pennington's distinctively lilting vibrato, 'Privilege' is a cascade of grim particulars and gallows humour, an unflinching treatise on privilege, indiscretion, betrayal, sex and class politics, failure, and resignation. This is Parenthetical Girls in fighting trim: unbridled, unambiguous, and with a new creative candor that's felt in both its words and music. 'Privilege' is a 12-track statement of purpose: a bold, strikingly cohesive pop clarion call that further solidifies Parenthetical Girls' place amongst the most surprising and uncompromising pop groups at work today.
http://parentheticalgirls.com/main/

ERGO PHIZMIZ first came to critical attention for his experimental electronica and sound collage and being name checked in John Peel’s autobiography. As a composer and music conceptualist the last decade has seen him active in nearly every form of music from film scores ( including for art star Christian Marclay to Channel 4) to chamber operas, such as the increasingly cultish The Mourning Show to award winning radio commissions of all kinds for German National radio and BBC3 and 4. Most recently his music has been reaching the ears of a wider audience with his distinctive and crafted approach to song-writing which has been received to widespread critical acclaim. Never playing a song the same way twice he’s currently assembled a basic ramshackle trio to charm and blunder his way through his latest album “Eleven Songs” along with newly penned numbers.

VOLUNTEERS PARK is Aviram Cohen of Silk Flowers and Soiled Mattress & The Springs' new project. Being a chameleon is one of Cohen’s strong suits, morphing from free jazz in Soiled Mattress to cold electronics in Silk Flowers, with Volunteers Park, he’s come to a fork in the road and sent parts of himself down both paths. Certain tracks are elemental, dark and glass-shattering like a horror soundtrack, others cascade with Casio sublimity whilst lyrics about a dentist’s daughter unfurl. Cohen must have a madhouse of bleeps and bloops playing pong in his head, a multiple-aesthetic-personality-disorder, but whatever’s going on is working. He doesn’t sound spread thin, just serenely scattered. Check out PPM for his most recent 7"!

WOLF EYES tomorrow

Good afternoon!
Still reeling from last night's incredible NOBUNNY show, what an a-mazing performance! Also huge thank yous to you all for helping sell out our SUN ARAW and JESSICA BAILIFF shows last week too! Our next event, is our 493rd since we started Upset The Rhythm (yes we have actually counted them all and yes not long now to number 500!), and sees WOLF EYES make an exclusive stop off in the UK to play for us at Corsica Studios tomorrow alongside LIBEREZ and OCCULT HAND. It's going to be truly brilliant, loads more details follow on plus new listings for of a show we've planned with LUCKY DRAGONS and MARY OCHER and a tiny intimate chapel show for DANIEL HIGGS next month too…

\\\\\\  TOMORROW  /////

WOLF EYES
LIBEREZ
OCCULT HAND
Tuesday 23 April
Corsica Studios, 4/5 Elephant Road, Elephant & Castle, SE17 1LB
8pm | £12.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/208130

WOLF EYES' infamous blistering noise propelled them from being a dank Ann Arbour, Michigan basement sensation to the finest ranks of Sub Pop without ever losing a shred of credibility. From touring with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K., Wolf Eyes have crossed  borders into popularity which few other such confrontational units of their ilk have been able to and kept straight and narrow on their blazing path. Originally started as the solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, he was soon joined by  Aaron Dilloway in 1998, John Olson in 2000 then Mike Connelly and now Crazy Jim. They has released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label and Nate Young’s AA Records. This show sees WOLF EYES play a one off UK show in support of their incredible new album 'No Answer: Lower Floors' out this month on De Stijl Records and as anyone whose seen them play live can attest the overwhelming force of a Wolf Eyes performance must be seen/felt/heard to to be believed.
http://www.wolfeyes.net/

LIBEREZ is the latest incarnation of a long running music collaboration between John Hannon and Pete Wilkins. Their album 'The Letter' was released last year via Alter Records and features multi-instrumentalist Tom James Scott and vocalist Nina Bosnic as new members. Repetitve dual vocal patterns are augmented with amplified percussion, light rhythms, guitar and violin dissonance to create a sense of abstracted ritual which can't help but draw listeners into the labyrinth. A new LP lurching around Britain's industrial past called 'Sane Men Surround' is out now on Savoury Days.
http://www.liberez.moonfruit.com/

OCCULT HAND are a mysterious pairing from Brighton, Isa Brooks and Henry Holmes. Their music is an eerie blur of sinister static, tremulous organ, punctuated by found sounds and effected voice, that builds to ghastly peaks before dispersing with a chilling lack of fanfare. Look out for a tape on SixSixSixties soon!

JESSICA BAILIFF and SUN ARAW and NOBUNNY next week in London!

Hello again!
Not one, not two but three shows for you next week, here's a quick heads up! On Wednesday we're at Cafe Oto for JESSICA BAILIFF's debut UK show, well worth the wait I'm sure and backed by an eerie incarnation of BODUF SONGS and MATAWAN too. Then on Thursday we're at Corsica Studios for a night of heavy hypnotics courtesy of SUN ARAW, DEEP MAGIC, VISION FORTUNE and BASS CLEF (DJ Set), nothing short of sublime. Then Sunday brings the week to a close in duly chaotic style with an epic party with NOBUNNY at the Brixton Windmill. It's gonna be great, here's all the detail…

\\\\\\  WEDNESDAY  /////

JESSICA BAILIFF
BODUF SONGS
MATAWAN
Wednesday 17 April
Cafe Oto, 18-22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £8.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/197657

JESSICA BAILIFF is a singer-songwriter from Toledo, Ohio. From her first records in the last gasp of the 1990s, Bailiff has carved out her own spectral path. She's collaborated with Dave Pearce of Flying Saucer Attack, Odd Nosdam, Casino Versus Japan and Rivulets among many, giving you some idea to expect the unexpected as her music ranges from short piano pieces to slowly ascending 20-minute feedback driven monsters. Brand new album, 'At The Down-Turned Jagged Rim Of The Sky' released by long-term label Kranky, is her first since 2006, suffused with her cool, half-chanted singing, plenty of sonic murk and a clear focus on arrangement and precision. Opener, 'Your Ghost Is Not Enough' is a strong meditation on the tensions and feelings of long-distance relationships, and two songs later, 'Sanguine' revolves around an epic blush of organ, bass, and increasingly louder guitars. The latter brings to mind the Doors fronted by Trish Keenan at first, but it transforms into something that's all Bailiff by the end. And then 'If You Say It' takes it to a further level with what could be gentle flutes bubbling through the mix. Bringing scope and space to a more intimate level, the miniature epic 'This is Real' demonstrates the virtues of the slow build and Bailiff's careful placement: repeated keyboard parts are matched by guitars, then voices take the place of the guitars as new guitars are added into the background. It feels like sweeping exultance, a sigh, and the title's reach for something grounded. For this show, Jessica will be performing with a band, consisting of Mat Sweet of Boduf Songs on drums and Clive Henry on bass, this will be her first ever show in the UK, seriously exciting!
http://jessicabailiff.tumblr.com/

BODUF SONGS has evolved from Mat Sweet's minimalist acoustic approach, showcased so well on previous albums for the Kranky, to a more adventurous and experimental treatment of his songs. Dark psychedelics are crafted from a combination of raw electronics, manipulated samples and heavy guitar. Where once other instruments were rare interludes betwixt brooding vocals and carefully plucked guitar, now they have a much bigger part to play, shaping entire songs into an animated whole. New album, 'Burnt Up On Re-Entry', released on Southern Records, is very much another galaxy for Boduf Songs, allowing Sweet to explore new black holes and interstellar clouds, resulting in expanding sounds that interact powerfully with his finely honed songwriting, and presenting a new hypothesis of the universe.
http://www.bodufsongs.com/

MATAWAN focus heavily on textural relationships, seeking to portray an aural journey that often treads a fine line between brooding density and compelling melody. Specifically choosing to use electric guitars as their primary medium, the band's compositions vary organically with each performance, which helps to give Matawan their own sense of freedom.

SUN ARAW
DEEP MAGIC
VISION FORTUNE
BASS CLEF (DJ set)
LONDONEARS DJs
Thursday 18 April
Corsica Studios, 4/5 Elephant Road, Elephant & Castle, SE17 1LB
8pm | £10.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/200244

SUN ARAW aka Cameron Stallones has over multiple cassette releases, three EPs, six albums and some arresting visual work, evolved as a singular purveyor of low-end psychedelia, melted afrobeat and warped dub. This month Stallones will bring his music to scorched and transcendental plains in the live setting. After the empire-like sonic scope of last year’s 'Ancient Romans' LP, 2012 saw Sun Araw ascend yet further with the release of 'ICON GIVE THANK', an incredible collaborative album between Cameron, long term collaborator M. Geddes Gengras and roots reggae vocal legends The Congos via the RVNG label as part of their FRKWYS series. This Summer will see the release of a brand new Sun Araw album, 'The Inner Treaty', so expect plenty of new songs from that on this April tour as Cameron continues his prolific and idiosyncratic artistic ventures: producing visually arresting videos for some of his totemic tracks, producing and DJing killer outsider dub/dancehall as Duppy Gun Soundsystem (also with M.Geddes Gengras) and emitting countless DJ mixes, rerubs, unofficial edits and spontaneous jams. It's going to get hazy that's for sure!
http://www.sunaraw.com/

DEEP MAGIC is the solo project of LA's Alex Gray. Utilizing found sound, minimal but twitchy rhythms and a whole mixed bag of production tricks, DEEP MAGIC speeds things up a bit and throws some light industrial and house curveballs to make for a bizarre and rewarding listen. Deep Magic is an ascent of vibrating dreams, a reverence for the past and narrative bliss. Deep Magic is archaic spirit hymns, total, healing music.
http://deeptapes.com/

VISION FORTUNE are brothers Alexander and Austin Peru who first met Andres Cuatroquesos in a small boys boarding school in Menen, Belgium. They rekindled their friendship in London seven years ago, and proceeded to meet up every week at an after-college music club perfecting a rhythmic tension and phasing repetition between guitars and drums that's plunges their epic, mesmeric songs into transcendental territories. Their debut LP, 'Mas Fiestas con el Grupo Vision Fortune', is out 13 May 2013 and is a split release between Faux Discx and Gringo Records, a duo of labels that has been behind previous releases from like-minded artists such as Cold Pumas, Sauna Youth and Hookworms.
https://soundcloud.com/visionfortune

BASS CLEF is rooted in London and has a very distinct but ever-morphing sound of deep modular zonage, delving into the deliriously trippy yet also moving onwards and rave-wards. For this show Ralph Cumbers will be working on a special DJ set of dubbed-out mixes, flying the afro-disco flag via the world of deliciously un-smooth groove.

NOBUNNY

CANDY HIGHWAY
Sunday 21st April
Brixton Windmill, 22 Blenheim Gardens, Brixton, SW2 5BZ
5pm | £9.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/210794

NOBUNNY (one word, all caps) has been captivating audiences of dedicated fans and new believers since Easter 2001 (the day Joey Ramone died). Born in the desert outside of Tucson AZ, NOBUNNY started as an animal Elvis impersonator before deciding to try out his hand at songwriting. The raucous rabbit's music is a intoxicating concoction of all the rights and wrongs that make up the heart and the soul of real rock n roll. Songs that sound as though they were written at the Brill building by a punk rock mutant back from the future. Some batshit brilliant bullshit. NOBUNNY stayed deep underground for his first 6 years doing DIY solo tours, burning limited CDRs, and building a dedicated group of fans across the USA. NOBUNNY shows were purported to include a dizzying act that often featured nudity, dancing, chaos, and costumes (most notably NOBUNNY's filthy rabbit mask). 2008, saw his first LP titled "Love Visions" released on 1234GO! Records. The album was a hit among critics, punks, and nerds alike. A modern RNR classic filled with inept production, and songs as catchy as catchy. In 2009 Burger Records released the Mixtape/LP "Raw Romance". An acoustical confessional brainstorm exploration of cassette goodness . In 2010 the rascally rabbit released a "warts n all" Live Album on Jack White's Third Man Records. The year ended with Nobunny's 2nd proper LP, "FIRST BLOOD". Released on the Memphis' Goner Records, the album is NOBUNNY's off the deep end, poptastic, psych-o masterstroke. NOBUNNY loves you, and has made it damn near impossible not to love him back. Follow the white rabbit!

BAD SPORTS are Orville Neeley, Greg Rutherford and TV Daniel Fried from Dallas, Texas. Having done stints in Texas bands including the Mind Spiders, the Wax Museums, the High Tension Wires and OBN III, Bad Sports have focussed things into fuzzy, frictive, raging with high spirits, balancing Who-like power chords with Ramones-y blistered pop. Check out their records on Total BS, Nashville's Dead and Burger and recent album 'Kings Of The Weekend' on Dirtnap.
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bad-Sports/117644598247026

ATOMIC SUPLEX are a London four piece of helmet-toting garage rockers with an album 'Bathroom Party' out now on the legendary Crypt label. This is probably what Bill Haley sounds like if you have the worst tinnitus in the world. Not so much a sonic cathedral as a sonic corrugated iron shed.
http://www.atomicsuplex.co.uk/

WAKE UP DEAD are a punk band from London (ex/present/ephemeral members of Black Time, Black Mamba Beat, The Jazz June, Atari, Work That Skirt, Live Fast Die, Crawling Age, Thee Exciters, etc...), in short amazing!
http://wakeupdead.bandcamp.com/

MEAN BIKINI are a garage/new wave quartet also from the Capital. Both the energy and attitude of their songs are dipped in total punk gloop. This band of young women sound like a Japanese power-pop group like Thee 50s High Teens, only raked through the hiss, making for some raw demos, leading us onwards.

CANDY HIGHWAY are purveyors of only the finest anti-post postmodern punk!

\\\\\\  TUESDAY  /////

TALK NORMAL
VERITY SUSMAN
RAVIOLI ME AWAY
Tuesday 2 April
Sebright Arms, 31-35 Coate Street, Bethnal Green, E2 9AG
8pm | £7.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/205969

TALK NORMAL are Brooklyn duo, Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro, dealing out songs that sparkle with melody and dissonance. After years of friendship, Talk Normal first emerged on the NYC music scene in 2007, initially releasing demos, cassettes and their Secret Cog vinyl EP. Following the 2009 release of their debut album Sugarland on Rare Book Room Records, Talk Normal released a handful of 7"s (including a split 7" with Thurston Moore on Fast Weapons Records) and shared the stage with the likes of Sonic Youth, Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Zola Jesus. Jarring rhythms and feedback-drenched guitar tones grace, recent sophmore album, Sunshine's nine surprisingly songful tunes - creating a sound informed by their predecessors (Cocteau Twins, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson & Creatures), but strikingly new. Tracks like "Bad Date", "Cover", and "Hurricane" carry almost a meditative emotional energy, where others like "Sunshine" and "Shot This Time" err on the side of explosive driving rock. Ambro & Register's combined voices often volley back and forth, each providing equal contributions to vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation. Combined with Register's flowing, nearly-drony riffs and Ambro's finely choreographed beats, the end result is a natural sonic cohesion to wonder at.

VERITY SUSMAN probes new territory with her solo project after a decade as lead singer of experimental rock band Electrelane. Using music, visuals and text, her live shows create a world of psychedelic alienation, embracing the subversive possibilities of awkwardness. Often appearing in drag, her saxophone becomes an organ of musical and gender performance, confronting audiences with a queer female masculinity that is at once serious, humorous, angry and uncomfortable. At times ironic, often passionate and full of joyous heartbreak, Verity takes the audience into a collage of exploratory soundscapes, woven through surreal reconstructions of lesbian pulp romance novels and sci-fi slash fiction tales.
http://www.facebook.com/veritysusman

RAVIOLI ME AWAY work within a exacting triangle of sound; slapped snare, prodded keys and bass pulse providing a delirious future pop backdrop for tales of cat calls and Tequila Sunrises. This is smart, aware, alive music, seeing the group concentrating carefully on how it's presented in the live realm with previous shows featuring cooked omelets and fly-fishing, what comes next we can only guess at.

SIMON JOYNER & THE GHOSTS
EMPEROR X
DAVID KENNETH NANCE
Wednesday 3 April
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB
8pm | £8.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/206264

SIMON JOYNER & THE GHOSTS are a living, breathing entity; a full six piece band, growing out of Joyner's double-LP record 'Ghosts' released last Summer on his own Sing, Eunuchs! label. Simon Joyner should require no introduction, but despite plaudits from everyone from John Peel to Conor Oberst, who cites Joyner as a primary influence, he remains a cult figure. His sterling reputation is mostly built on thirteen albums of lyrically astute, musically dense, uncompromising songs. As a wordsmith he is peerless, often compared to both Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, while his singing voice alternately conjures an emotionally turbulent Neil Young (think “Speakin’ Out”) and Gordon Gano circa “Country Death Song.” But Joyner’s songs also bear the influence of more modern mavericks, revealing a sharp appreciation for the fringes of the American and UK underground. It’s not for nothing he cites the Dead C’s raucous 'Harsh 70’s Reality' as one of the handful of double albums that inspired 'Ghosts'. For lovers of lyrics, that fast-perishing breed, 'Ghosts' is Christmas morning. Listening to it, you may frequently find yourself covering your mouth in disbelief, exclaiming “Oh shit!” like someone just dropped a particularly scathing hip-hop metaphor. The music matches the intensity of the words. Joyner’s band is an intuitive organism never content to merely ‘back up’ the singer. Each member of the group suffuses the environments of these songs with unusual color without ever overplaying or subordinating. With, 'Ghosts', Simon Joyner couldn't have made a more extreme example of an album that so handsomely rewards total immersion and a live show incorporating guitars, viola, pedal steel, bass and drums spells out something equally special.

EMPEROR X is the project name of American songwriter and noise pop saboteur C. R. Matheny. In 2004, Matheny dropped his pursuit of a master’s degree in physics to self-release a string of critically acclaimed lo-fi speed folk albums. His releases grabbed the attention of NPR, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, Tiny Mix Tapes and many others. The UK’s Plan B Magazine called his music “a swollen interfusion of capricious brilliance”. His music has been described as part Daniel Johnston part Dan Deacon. His songs are always catchy with lyrics that will pull heartstrings. His sing along tunes and unstoppable energy has brought Emperor X to art galleries, bars, bookstores, university symposiums, college radio stations, garbage-strewn pedestrian tunnels, and one very confused laser tag arena in Connecticut. Matheny currently lives in Los Angeles where he writes and records new music from the top floor of a tenement building overlooking the megaphone preachers, fake ID salesmen, and tamaleros of MacArthur Park. His new album Western Teleport was released on Bar/None Records last year.
http://emperorx.tumblr.com/

DAVID KENNETH NANCE recently stepped out of his burned out basement in Omaha, Nebraska and steeped himself in the city of angels, provoking collective grief and inciting small riots in the hearts of the house show universe here. Rocker and singer-songwriter from that catchy, shambolic mess called The Prairies, he also plays lead guitar and shouts in Simon Joyner’s band, the Ghosts. His forthcoming, vinyl debut on Grapefruit Records, “Actor’s Diary,” was recorded late at night alone in Joyner’s warehouse studio, Casa de los Fantasmas, over a two month period leading up to his west coast pilgrimage, this is anguish and expectation and meditations on what was, is, and might be in the artist’s life. Channeling Jim Shepard, heroin-era Stones and New Zealand’s notorious Jefferies brothers through broken and poorly repaired gear, Nance rock is indeed the new pasture!

\\\\\\  FRIDAY  /////

BRILLIANT COLORS
PROPER ORNAMENTS
EARTH ROD
Friday 5 April
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £5.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/207363

BRILLIANT COLORS are a four-piece from San Francisco, inspired by post-punk fervor, the spiky pop of C86 and early Flying Nun / Creation missives. Their 2009 album, 'Introducing', is one of the finest debuts in recent memory, and they followed it with 7"s on Slumberland and Make a Mess and a European tour with La La Vasquez that led to the release of another great single on Germs of Youth. Most recently, they teamed up with Belfast’s brilliant Girls Names to release a split 7". All of these singles were recorded with Oakland garage phenom Ty Segall, who spiked the ladies’ punk-pop swirl with his own special grit. Their most recent album 'Again And Again', came out last Summer on Slumberland, displaying song-writing as infectious as ever, only now the tunes are now more carefully arranged pushing the band to something as elemental as pop gets. The mood is confessional and late-night dreamy; Jess' unadorned vocals and eloquent lyrics are personal, direct and atmospherically deployed, mixed in with the songs like another instrument. They can be heard to great effect on tougher songs like "Back To The Tricks" and "Painting Truths," tempering those tunes' punchy dynamics with their melodic sensibility. Add in classic-sounding stormers like "Cult Face" and "How Much Younger" and you have all the makings of another great Brilliant Colors album, one that shows how finely they've honed their own unique brand punk-flecked crash-pop. This show sees them on day one of tour, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, touting a new flexi 7" called 'I Was Born A Fantasist', exciting!
http://itsbrilliantcolors.blogspot.co.uk/

THE PROPER ORNAMENTS make a thrillingly taut and melodic pop indebted both to the sun balm'd West Coast and the driving, terse rhythms of the British Invasion and C86 pop, centered around the close partnership of frontmen Max Claps and James Hoare (also of Veronica Falls). In 2010 were joined by bassist Michael Lovett and Let's Wrestle frontman Wesley Patrick Gonzalez, releasing a 7" on San Francisco label Make A Mess Records. 2011 saw them release a self-titled EP on No Pain In Pop, proving the band as purveyors of abrupt, perfect pop, jet propelled by super compressed drum production and the pair's DNA tight vocal interplay.

EARTH ROD are a trio from Leicester, featuring members of Thee Ludds and Meaty Bone-Bone. Sparring male and female vocals, surfy guitar scree, lots of crash… yes, please!

JAAP BLONK / PHIL MINTON / DYLAN NYOUKIS / LUKE POOT will be performing as a quartet, all a capella in this serene chapel of sound in Bethnal Green. Jaap Blonk and Phil Minton have been pioneering in the field of sound poetry and free vocalisation for several decades each, originally a saxophonist and trumpeter respectively they both abandoned those instruments long ago to concentrate on the boundless  instrument that is the human voice.  They will be joined today by two of the UKs upcoming sound poets/experimental musicians, Dylan Nyoukis & Luke Poot, for a full on all vocal quartet that threatens to blow minds and full heads with joy.

ADAM BOHMAN's personal approach to music has essentially always been acoustic, but due to his close involvement with live electronics (he is a founder member of Morphogenesis), his sounds have very often been subjected to signal processing. The Bohman aesthetic can be a dense and tangled thing to unpick and describe. Various and nefarious sounds and artistic influences merge and collide, Varèsian sound montage supporting spoken word material sourced from a pub menu, or frenetic juxtapositions between amplified shoe brushes and a frenzied tape cut-up of 17th Century instruments. Sound art which oscillates between states of the absurd and sonically grotesque, and highly articulate explorations of extra-musical sound.

THESE FEATHERS HAVE PLUMES aka Andie Brown is a musician from London who began playing music as a bass guitarist, working with experimental band Cindytalk in her late teens. An interest in sound and experimentation led Andie to begin working as These Feathers Have Plumes in 2007, creating sonic landscapes using traditional and non-traditional instrumentation (primarily double bass and glass), found-sound and field recordings.

Terrific, thanks for reading all of that blah! If that wasn't enough smack right in the middle of our shows next week falls a show at KOKO our friend Julia is organising in celebration of Swans' 30th Anniversary. The Mouth To Mouth Festival on April 4th will see performances by Upset faves Grouper, XiuXiu, Ben Frost and Mercury Rev’s Cinematic Silent Sound Tettix Wave Experiment all performing at the behest of Gira, who will close the evening with a truly gargantuan Swans set. All the artists were chosen for their ability to resuscitate, set fire to the air, or to mesmerise. It's going to be one for the memory bank that's for definite. Loads more info and ticket links here: http://www.koko.uk.com/listings/mouth-mouth-04-04-2013
Enjoy the Easter break!

XIU XIU & EUGENE S. ROBINSON: SAL MINEO
DEATH SHANTIES
DEAD DAYS BEYOND HELP
Wednesday 6 February
Cafe Oto, 18-22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | SOLD OUT

SAL MINEO sits at a crossroads between OXBOW's EUGENE S. ROBINSON [lyrics/voice] and XIU XIU's JAMIE STEWART [music], a pure/impure distillate of experimentalism based on 30 second to 3 minute long focused bursts of sonic crime, that plumbs the cooling depths of a pleasure cruised death trip. These two undisputed heavyweights of musical and emotional non-compromise, whose music leaves tender bruises by whatever sweet blow it is rendered, are ready to crack rooms in two with their high precision silencer of a duo show, combining the best and most free-roaming of both their artistic domains. In the midnight midst of a decline that found it's near inevitable conclusion in a Los Angeles alley at the wrong end of an edged weapon, the band Sal Mineo, as influenced by the man, is much more about the accretion of failure, cinematic and otherwise, than it is about the now almost forgotten rise.'Sal Mineo' the album is due on Important in March 2013.

EUGENE S. ROBINSON puts the work in. From past collaborative efforts with Lydia Lunch, Marianne Faithfull, Gus Van Sant, Steve Albini, DJ Rupture, Bill Cosby, Kathy Acker, Allen Ginsberg, Jarboe, Old Man Gloom, and a passel of side projects passing from electronica to post-punk, Robinson's work with his primary group OXBOW covers two decades of chaotic complexity, 8 some-odd releases, a few sound tracks and even a few books. JAMIE STEWART, over the course of 8 records, and even more compilations, collaborations [Michael Gira, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Larsen, Shearwater], splits, singles, live albums, and an endless touring schedule that covers the globe and then again, has embraced the art as everything ideal with a stevedore's dedication to the work harder, longer, better, faster than many others/any others ethos. And Stewart’s multi-instrumentalism and obsession with structural chaos and clarity seals whatever deal needs sealing.

DEATH SHANTIES is a new mixed media balls-to-the-wall Free Jazz group featuring Alex Neilson (drums), Sybren Renema (alto/ baritone sax) and Lucy Stein (painting/ projections). The group combine references to Medieval music, Sea Shanties and Field Hollars with the ecstatic cry of classic 1960s fire music. Stein uses primitive devotional images, food stuffs and even her own hair in visceral, highly textured painted projections making Death Shanties a unique and immersive live experience.

DEAD DAYS BEYOND HELP are Alex Ward (guitar/vocals) and Jem Doulton (drums). Alex Ward, initially known as a improvising clarinettist with the likes of Derek Bailey and Eugene Chadbourne, has in recent years also been heard playing guitar with improv power-trio N.E.W. (with Steve Noble and John Edwards), and in collaborations at Cafe Oto with such avant-rock luminaries as Tatsuya Yoshida, Shoji Hano, Weasel Walter, Thurston Moore and Chris Corsano. Dead Days Beyond Help teams Alex with virtuosic drummer Jem Doulton (also the man behind the work of disturbing pop visionary Mr. Ron Jetson) for an unrestricted exploration of the possibilities of the guitar/drums duo. As with their 2009 debut "Access Denied!", DDBH's latest release "The Game Face" (out February 2013 on Copepod) mixes intricate and breakneck instrumentals with structurally-straightforward but emotionally scouring song material.
