NO BABIES, AUSMUTEANTS and LITURGY all playing London this week, SAUNA YOUTH's new album released today too!

Hello again!
Massive thanks to everyone who played at or attended our Sauna Youth album launch last Friday night, what an unforgettable night! ‘Distractions’ is released into shops on LP/CD around the world as of today, so get down your local store this week if you can, not only does it sound colossal, it turned out to be a handsome release as these photos testify!

This week is another busy one for Upset The Rhythm, not only do we have a new album out but we’ve announced some rousing new shows for MATANA ROBERTS, RICHARD DAWSON and ASIQ NARGILE. If that wasn’t enough we have three shows taking place in London this week in as many days.

Tomorrow we’re embracing some super-energetic freedom punk with NO BABIES, MARGY PEPPER and COMMISERATIONS at The Victoria. Whilst Wednesday we have Australia’s synth thumpers AUSMUTEANTS playing a one off UK show for us at The Shacklewell Arms, with TENSE MEN and CONNECTORS in support. Thursday evening sees us head to Electrowerkz for a special double bill from LITURGY and CIRCUIT DES YEUX, covering much colourful ground between transcendental black metal and ecstatic noise spells. Full write-ups for all three of these staggering shows can be found below, tickets are available for all of them, we hope you can join us…

NO BABIES
MARGY PEPPER
COMMISERATIONS
Tuesday 9 June
The Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Rd, Dalston, E8 3AS

NO BABIES are a free-punk five piece from Oakland, California. Since forming in 2008, they've worked tirelessly to develop a unique 'new punk' sound influenced by jazz, art music and hardcore, not unlike Old Skull playing Schoenberg, while Magma heckles from the audience. In 2011, Upset The Rhythm released their debut self-titled album to rabid acclaim, they have since followed that up with a number of tours and singles released through Isolated Now Waves, Gilgongo and Folktale. Last year the band returned with their "Yo No Soy Como Tú" EP, featuring new members and new instrumentation, but with the same joyous and chaotic intensity that has long been the band's signature. This new five song record for Upset The Rhythm (and Gilgongo in the US) rapidly shifts between catchy melodies and jarring atonality, creating a sound that is simultaneously chaotic and controlled. Happy and angry, beautiful and abrasive.

MARGY PEPPER are one of the most winsome slash awesome slash rocking slash slash bands out there. Margy Pepper comes from Olympia - a fact that should be easily identifiable when confronted with their brazen confrontation of the seriousness usually laid upon the idea of DIY punk. Add onto their musical prowess its affection for stories of childhood embarrassments and triumphs, and you have a band that never ceases to delight. Mary Pepper have heavy dreams and ghosts in the garage. There is light in the summer and water in our mouths.

COMMISERATIONS are a trio of Leeds post-punks responsible for a string of noisy skronk-pop hits. Members of Pifco, Beards, Sissy Hex etc. Loud as a helicopter, jagged as a bread knife, fresh as a daisy!

AUSMUTEANTS
TENSE MEN
THE CONNECTORS
Wednesday 10 June
Shacklewell Arms, 71 Shacklewell Lane, Dalston, London, E8 2EB

AUSMUTEANTS are four twenty-nothings from Geelong, Victoria (Australia), raised on a diet of seminal avant punk like Chrome and the Screamers. Letʼs not mention Devo—as a two-piece, Jake Robertson (synth, guitar) and Billy Gardener (drums) flushed that obsession with the release of their ‘Split Personalities’ album in 2012. They’ve since added Marc Dean and Shaun Connor on bass and guitar, respectively, and worked ’60s songwriting ideas, disco rhythms and a subtler brand of heft into finely crafted pop songs, recording 22 in early 2013. Aarght! Records picked the best twelve for ‘Amusements’, reissued on vinyl by Goner. It's 12 tracks of ripping, captivating, fun synth-punk. As they shift from a deep buzzing synth to a trembling high end, Ausmuteants consistently veer far away from anything resembling ‘Computer World’. Instead, they invoke the kinetic, trashy attack of the essential Killed By Death punk compilations. "Bad Day" has a persistent synth churn that's bolstered by Gardener's primitive, hi-hat led stomp. Then there's "Daylight Robbery", which features a melody that seems appropriately urgent for a song about breaking a window in order to commit a crime in plain view of the afternoon sun. Ausmuteants create a specific, slovenly universe with their music, and while they don't move too far past the couch, they create an exciting synth barrage from where they sit.

TENSE MEN live in a claustrophobic, miasmic world of scuttling shapes, deformed shadows and rigid, repetitive rhythms. The world of Tense Men has a low ceiling, the walls are wooden, rotting in places and badly varnished. The world of Tense Men is clammy to the touch. Eyes twitch, ears ring. Ears burn, eyes sting. The world of Tense Men is dripping all over your mouldy living room carpet. Reptilian tongues darting in and out tasting the dank air. Human forms jerking awkwardly to a record skipping in a locked, sweaty room. Shrieking voices. Murmuring whispers. Telling you things you don’t want to know over and over again, you listen because you aren’t sure if you’re really hearing it or not. You are! Aren't you? These men also exist within other entities, namely Sauna Youth, Cold Pumas and Omi Palone, amongst others. It began in the bleak Autumn of 2010 and has henceforth been peddling its suspect wares back and forth, here and there. Check out their recent album 'Where Dull Care is Forgotten' on Faux Discx, as well as their cassette on Casenove Tapes.

THE CONNECTORS are a London based duo with a sound that fuses 70’s punk with rock and roll. They are two modest guys, Andy (Guitar, Vocals) and Danny (Drums), and they’ve come to fill your ears with everything they could expunge out of their heads. Punk swagger weaved through a solid, skank-worthy drumbeat, blasted through with a drone of non-beauty. The Connectors make the most out of their minimalist set-up. Translation: they are as loud as hell, turn it up!

\\\\\    THURSDAY    /////

LITURGY
CIRCUIT DES YEUX
Thursday 11 June
Electrowerkz, 7 Torrens Street, Angel, EC1V 1NQ

LITURGY is a Brooklyn-based, self-styled “Transcendental Black Metal” band whose yearning, energetic music exists in an uncanny space between avant rock, black metal, fine art and shamanic ritual. Led by songwriter and conceptual architect Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, who is joined by guitarist Bernard Gann, bassist Tyler Dusenbury and drummer Greg Fox, the band exists as a 21st century total work of art (gesamtkunstwerk): activating divine potencies by means of music and culture even as it underscores the contradictions inherent in such a project during the internet era. Their third full length, ‘The Ark Work’ (Thrill Jockey), is a quantum leap forward, a radical change in sound that paradoxically sounds more like Liturgy than ever. The album hums and churns with Hunt-Hendrix’s inventive arrangements - drenched with glockenspiels, bagpipes, strings, ritual chanting, and MIDI horns. It supplements its metal energy with motifs from unlikely, disparate genres; cross-fertilizing hardstyle beats, occult-oriented rap, and the glitched re-sampling of IDM and with structures from Medieval sacred music, Romantic classical music, and minimalism. The result is a rich, seething cyber-fantasia that is improbably listenable, conveying the disarming, authentic emotion that is Liturgy’s hallmark - a blend of startling invention, high caliber musicianship, raw energy, and profound, cosmic sadness.

CIRCUIT DES YEUX is the solo project of Chicago-based artist Haley Fohr. Named for the nerve in the eye that supplies power to the act of seeing, Circuit des Yeux launched in 2008 following a stint with the autodidactic duo Cromagnon. A combination of folk chanteuse and noise maven, Fohr’s sound vacillates seamlessly between lo-fi and effortless-sounding songwriting sophistication. As Circuit des Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity of human emotions, juxtaposing tenderness and grief, ecstasy and horror, using sounds as representations of the emotional spectrum that we all experience. Fohr’s striking voice, an impassioned baritone, is the music’s centerpiece and guiding force. Between 2009-13 Fohr released three solo records and a series of EP’s and 7-inches with De Stijl and Ba Da Bing, gaining international momentum with literally hundreds of live appearances around the world. On new album, ‘In Plain Speech’ (Thrill Jockey), Fohr is joined by some of the most progressive musicians in the Chicago music community; Cooper Crain (Cave, Bitchin Bajas), Whitney Johnson (Verma), Rob Frye (Bitchin Bajas), Adam Luksetich (Little Scream), and Kathleen Baird (Spires That In The Sunset Rise). Fohr cements her reputation as a fearless songwriter and inventive arranger with this stirring collection of songs that are both gorgeous and emotionally potent.

MATANA ROBERTS - London show announced!

We're more than delighted to announce this very special show today, serious dream come true territories!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

MATANA ROBERTS
‘Coin Coin Chapter Three’
Tuesday 6 October
OSLO, 1a Amhurst Road, Hackney Central, E8 1LL

Matana Roberts is an internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner. Roberts works in many contexts and mediums, including improvisation, dance, poetry, and theater. She made two records as a core member of the Sticks And Stones quartet in the early 2000s and has gone on to release a diverse body of solo and ensemble work under her own name on Constellation and Central Control over the past decade. She is perhaps best known for her acclaimed Coin Coin project, a multi-chapter work of “panoramic sound quilting” that aims to expose the mystical roots and channel the intuitive spirit-raising traditions of American creative expression while maintaining a deep and substantive engagement with narrativity, history, community and political expression within improvisatory musical structures. Constellation began documenting the Coin Coin project in 2011 and has released the first three of a projected twelve album-length chapters to date.

The third chapter of Coin Coin, entitled ‘river run thee’ and released on Constellation last year, finds Roberts constructing a sound art tapestry from field recordings, loop and effects pedals, and spoken word recitations, alongside her saxophone and singing voices. ‘Coin Coin Chapter Three: river run thee’ could arguably be considered first and foremost a vocal work, and notwithstanding its experimental and esoteric structure, a deeply narrative work as well. Not unlike 2013’s ‘Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile’ the new chapter unfolds as an uninterrupted album-length flow, this time in what Roberts calls “a fever dream” of sonic material, woven in surrealist fashion. For this rare performance Roberts will present ‘Coin Coin Chapter Three’ as a solo performance comprising voice, saxophone, audio samples and large scale projections.

“At my artistic core, I am firmly dedicated to creating a unique and very personal experiential body of sound work that speaks to, and reminds people of all walks of life to reach, stand up, give voice, regardless of difference, created from mere labels of intellectual classification. In my ideal world the idea of ‘difference’, is an illusion designed only for the purpose of modern economic division and elitist intellectual hierarchy. Through my life’s work, I stand creatively in defiance.”
MATANA ROBERTS

SAUNA YOUTH - 'Transmitters' VIDEO

Yeh, this just premiered over at DIY Magazine!

"Filmed among the ruins of The Crystal Palace Terraces, Transmitters is a playful and poetic ode to desire".

Directed, shot and edited by Gary McQuiggin of Welywyn Garden City, known for his work previously with The Pheromoans, The Bomber Jackets and Deerhoof, the film recalls James Broughton's surrealist miniature The Pleasure Garden (1957).

Using a number of the same locations, the band appear, disappear and re-appear amongst and against the modern day remains of the ruins.McQuiggin  ups the 'pleasurable strangeness' of Broughton's original with increasingly splenetic rhythmic cuts and visual non-sequiturs.

Transmitters continues the tradition of 'the park' as a place of self-reflection and respite from urban hullabaloo, as well as a space for serious transformative experience - as seen and heard in works by artists diverse as The UV Race (Life Park), The Kinks (Village Green Preservation Society), Gary Numan (Down In The Park) and Prince (Paisley Park).

"Stylish, funny, charming - Transmitters may be a slight film but it is by no means an inconsiderable one" (reworked excerpt from the Pleasure Garden BFI DVD booklet, Jim Cook, 2009)

SAUNA YOUTH // Album launch //
RICHARD ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
PRIMETIME
RATTLE
Friday 5 June
The Old Baths, 80 Eastway, Hackney Wick, London, E9 5JH

SAUNA YOUTH are an evolving band of future humans making truly irregular punk, not quite comparable to anything else. 'Weird' is a meaningless platitude, and 'art punk' is a classifier that shouldn't be required. Consisting of Richard Phoenix (drums, vocals), Lindsay Corstorphine (guitar), Jen Calleja (vocals, sampler) and Christopher Murphy (bass), Sauna Youth are a punk band that’s happy to embrace all of the contradictions that go along with that notion. On paper Sauna Youth sound considered - live they can barely be contained. They are at times furious, unstoppable and severe with the sampler wailing like an alarm coming from a parallel universe – then chugging, poppy, harmonious and fun. Forever loud. As Kurt Cobain once asked "Why can't we be both Black Sabbath and The Beatles?" Sauna Youth consistently pose the question, “Why can't we be both The Ramones and Steve Reich?”

‘Distractions’ (released on June 8th through Upset The Rhythm) marks the first time the band has managed to write everything in a room together and also documents the first time they’ve entered a studio to record; the songs in turn created through the process of learning to write together. Made up of 14 songs, Distractions is an album about desire, but most importantly, about that area just out of reach of desire. It looks at what it means to be distracted from being yourself. It thrives in the desire to be someone else, the very idea that you could be someone else. It’s also an album that feels instinctive and natural, flowing freely from a band that have come to terms with the sum of its parts. Ultimately though, Sauna Youth have made a colossal record which is impossible not to enjoy. This show at Hackney Wick’s Old Baths marks the launch of the album, come celebrate its release and look out for a special guest too!
http://lostinidea.blogspot.co.uk/

RICHARD ROCK ‘N’ ROLL will be coming up from Billingshurst to perform a one-off improvised set for us. A regular for many years at the long running integrated night The Rock House in Brighton. Richard RnR could rival Mark E Smith in the number of musicians he's had back him over the years, turning up on the night with a folder of lyrics and a head full of ideas, a band will be formed there and then and you never quite know what will happen. On Friday night members of Sauna Youth will be his backing band, trying to put the Rock n Roll in Richard Rock n Roll. Constant Flux will also have a cassette release of Richard's album, ‘Everybody Is Crazy’ recorded with Boon from Sauna Youth in 2011.

PRIMETIME are self-proclaimed 'chaotic neurotics', finding their balance amid spirited punk clatter with a sense of propulsive fun and maximal energy. Their songs are rampages of sound as raw and minimal as they are inventive, and the band are soon to release their debut four track EP through La Vida Es Un Mus. Harking back to the glory years of 1979 to 1982, 'Tied Down' from the EP is their calling card, a scratchy mix of Kleenex and Delta 5 with an instant hook that won't fail to get you moving.

https://soundcloud.com/thisisprimetime

RATTLE are a drumming duo based in Nottingham and comprised of Theresa J Wrigley and Katharine Eira Brown. Both musicians also play drums for two other well respected bands, with Theresa in Fists and Katy in Kogumaza. Far from the hippy bongo nightmare one might imagine from a band made up of only two drummers, Rattle instead play minimalist rhythms that remain both hypnotic and danceable heavily thanks to the delicate vocal melodies which accompany their beats. Their sound recalls This Heat or ESG whilst remaining uniquely their own.
