PEGA MONSTRO are coming to London!!!
The phenomenal PEGA MONSTRO from Portugal will be coming over to London this August in support of their new album on Upset The Rhythm, extremely exciting news!
Upset The Rhythm presents…
PEGA MONSTRO
Saturday 15 August
The Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Rd, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £6 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/321016
Pega Monstro are sisters Júlia Reis (drums) and Maria Reis (guitar, keyboard), both sing! The duo’s name translates as ‘catch the monster’, perfectly countering the band’s striving dream-punk sound. The name ‘Pega Monstro’ also references a novelty toy in the shape of a jelly hand on a string, which children have been throwing at each other in delight for many generations in their native country. Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, Maria and Júlia have been playing music together since they were 15 and 17 respectively, in other groups first before resolving on becoming a duo. Back in 2010, both sisters started a record label, along with some of their musician friends, called Cafetra Records to document Portugal’s garage punk scene. Cafetra represents a community of like-minded musicians who all help each other, making music that they’d want to hear, powered by enthusiasm. Pega Monstro were among the first bands on the label, releasing their ‘O Juno-60 Nunca Teve Fita’ EP the same year to a burgeoning audience of devotees, who’d turn up in growing numbers to each show and sing back the lyrics. Maria puts the band’s instant attention down to being different, “we were girls, we were young and we could rock, people weren’t used to that at all”. 2012 saw Pega Monstro release their self-titled debut album, which was produced by B Fachada, an extremely well known Portuguese singer songwriter. The band and producer hit it off like wildfire and recorded an impressive, raucous debut record that met with critical national acclaim.
Now Pega Monstro have a new album ready for Upset The Rhythm, whom they hope will bring their music to audiences outside of their homeland too. ‘Alfarroba’ is the name of this second album, it’s title meaning ‘carob’, after the sweet tasting bean that grows in the wild trees that spontaneously spring up along the Mediterranean coast. Maria explains further, “In Portugal there are a lot of carob trees in the Algarve and our mother's side of the family is from there, we spent every summer there as children. The scent is unlike any other. So apart from the phonetic appeal of the word, ‘Alfarroba’ is also a homage to that heritage”. The songs on ‘Alfarroba’ deal with many themes, some universal topics like love and growing up, others focusing on the nature of writing songs themselves, whilst some try to make sense of the world from a female perspective.

SIR RICHARD BISHOP in London this Friday, MONOTONY 7" launch on Monday!
Afternoon
everyone,
Thanks to all
of you who came out to see Richard Dawson last week, hope you all enjoyed it as
much as we did, what an epic performance in every sense! Our next event takes
place this Friday evening in Kilburn at the Tin Tabernacle and will witness a
true evocation of guitar greatness courtesy of SIR RICHARD BISHOP from Sun City Girls, accompanied by his antique
‘C. Bruno’ acoustic this promises to be a rare occurrence indeed. Joining him
at this very special concert in the corrugated iron church / Sea Cadets HQ will
be London duo MARKERS, lending some
tonal shade and electric nuances to proceedings. We will be running a bar at
the event, expect live music to commence from 7.30pm, plus there will be
selected tickets available on the door from 7pm.
After a well-deserved
weekend we’ll return to Power Lunches for a Bank Holiday Monday matinee show
celebrating the release of MONOTONY’s
colossal split 7” with SAUNA YOUTH,
which came out this week! Helping to get your head rushing we have THE WORMS and DAS BOOTS THE CHEMIST both playing too. It’s looking like the show
will run between 2pm and 6pm, and again tickets will be available on the door
for but £5!
Full
write-ups on both shows follow, in addition here’s a playlist of new Upset The
Rhythm releases to act as your sounding board, there’s tracks from the
aforementioned split 7” of primal punk and something brand new by Portugal’s
Pega Monstro. Just click on the headless horseman. Thank you!

SIR RICHARD BISHOP is an experimental guitarist whose
improvisations and compositions often reflect the shadow worlds of India, the
Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail. Bishop is
perhaps best known as a founding member (along with brother Alan Bishop) of
experimental ethnic-improv pioneers and underground tricksters Sun City Girls,
who for nearly 30 years have produced an extensive discography of over 50 full
length albums, 20 one-hour cassettes and a dozen 7” records. Bishop’s first
official solo record, ‘Salvador Kali’, was released by John Fahey’s esteemed
Revenant Records label in 1998. The album showcases Bishop's own particular
obsessions and roots, drawing from a variety of worldwide sources. Locust Music
issued his widely praised second record, ‘Improvika’ in 2004. This album
consists of nine extemporaneous pieces for solo acoustic guitar and led to
Bishop performing live as a solo artist, playing throughout Europe, Australia
and the United States, over the successive years touring extensively with
Bonnie Prince Billy, Earth, Animal Collective and Bill Callahan, amongst many
others. Throughout the previous decade Bishop has excelled himself with
numerous self-releases alongside major works on Locust and Drag City, who
released Bishop’s most recent album, ’Tangier Sessions’, earlier this year.
The conceit
of Bishop's new album, Tangier Sessions, is based in some serious guitar lore
that would make any bedroom noodler salivate. While in Switzerland last year,
Bishop stumbled into a hole-in-the-wall luthier's shop. Failing to find
anything to suit his purposes, he went to leave, but he was stopped by the
owner on his way out, who reached behind a cabinet and pulled out a very old,
remarkable guitar of unknown provenance. The only distinguishing mark on the
guitar was a tiny sticker inside which read "C. Bruno". Entranced by
its sound and mystery, but intimidated by its price, Bishop came and went
several times before finally caving and buying the guitar. Soon after this, he
found himself holed up for a week at an apartment in Tangier, Morocco, playing
the guitar furiously all day, improvising and recording at night. Tangier Sessions
is the result of these frenzied efforts. Stylistically, the album evokes
Morocco as a hub of cultural exchange. Bishop often explores the Andalusian
flamenco guitar style, infusing it with gestures from across the country’s
other borders. In the seductive, cyclical crocheting of "Mirage",
there’s traces of the Mali-centered "desert blues," a style sometimes
considered to have inspired the American blues, but which now, in contemporary
practice, re-emulates it. Elsewhere, Bishop’s haunting melodies recall the
sound of the oud, a popular lute-like instrument in North Africa, as well as in
the Middle East and Greece. This rare solo performance sees Bishop performing
with his ‘C. Bruno’ guitar in a wonderful grade II listed Victorian church in
the heart of Kilburn. The Tin Tabernacle is constructed out of galvanised
corrugated iron and its interior was remodeled in the 1940’s to house the Sea
Cadets and their cultural centre.
MARKERS are a guitar duo from London comprising of Jason
Carty and Jodie Cox. Collectively, their musical history has seen them as
founding members and collaborators with the likes of Narrows, Geiger Counter,
Foe, Exes, Rohame, Art of Burning Water and Earth. However, this project
is something different. Creating music without voice or rhythm section
leaves them very exposed, focusing attention on how each note is wrung or
coaxed for optimum emotional expression, and relying heavily on tone, dexterity
and structuring. Whilst a review of early guitar influences has bled
into their sound, there is an obvious nod to cinema and the effect music has on
steering images with sweetness, patience and intensity, both on the screen and
in the mind’s eye.

MONOTONY are an evolving band of future humans making truly irregular punk, not quite comparable to anything else. 'Weird' is a meaningless platitude, and 'art punk' is a classifier that shouldn't be required. Celebrating the release of a split 7” on Upset The Rhythm with their sister band Sauna Youth, Monotony are set to detonate the basement of Power Lunches with their head-first primal punk. "Acquisitions, no ambition. Jumping off the balcony," they intone over the swaggering rhythm over their new song ‘Luxury Flats’. In the song, Monotony come face to face with Ballard's high-rise nightmare set upon rapidly gentrifying London out of all reason. The second track on the 7”, "Human Troll," is a boldly brash track lodged with sloping riffs and hollered vocals. "Human Troll lives in the river, cement mattress making him shiver!”. Monotony also have some forthcoming releases on Faux Discx and 80/81 Records, so keep your ears open for those too!
https://monotonymonotonymonotony.bandcamp.com/releases
THE WORMS are a guitar-n-drums London duo consisting of one Cold Puma and one Omi Palone. Describing themselves as “petty prannies proffering pithy punk produce”, there’s a straight forward, bare-bones immediacy to their solid stop/start missives.
https://soundcloud.com/the_worms-1
DAS BOOTS THE CHEMIST formed at the end of the crap year of 2014. Approaching their songs as raw statements vs intricately genius jokes, Das Boots throw some conversationally direct lyrics on top of a great pile of spindly guitar lines and bombastic drummage. Their music is a bit like punk, post punk, rockabilly, and classic rock. They often play the bits wrong and then scream because it all gets a bit you know. They write a new song during every rehearsal and then discard it because it sounds too much like a song by one of their friend’s bands. Sometimes one song that only vaguely sounds like something else slips through the net and that’s how they built their set up.

Remember next
week we also have THE JULIE RUIN, ROSE MCDOWALL and PROLAPSE all playing in London too, no rest for the wicked! Hoping
you have the best of weeks, see you on Friday!

WETDOG released this week and SIR RICHARD BISHOP show coming up!
Hello everyone!
It’s been a
busy week for Upset The Rhythm, not only have we announced new shows for DOPE BODY, STEPHEN STEINBRINK, JULIE
BYRNE and FUZZ, we’ve also
released an exquisite new album by WETDOG
entitled ‘Divine Times’. ‘Divine Times’ is an uncompromising
album, it’s an assured album that’s been waiting for us to catch up. It has all
of the tropes of what you’d expect from Wetdog, the characteristic fervour,
deadpan humour, falling-to-bits willfulness, yet it transcends the band’s love
of all things disjointed and accidentally happy. It’s the sound of Wetdog
confident out there on their own limb. There’s no looking down, only soaring
upward. As a special treat, you can now stream the whole album for one week
here!
Our next show
falls next Wednesday for Richard Dawson, however all tickets for that one are
now long gone, if you’re lucky enough to have one please be aware that the live
music will start around 8.30pm with London’s Sacred Harp group. I’ll leave you
with our listing for SIR RICHARD BISHOP
and MARKERS, who we have playing at
the Tin Tabernacle two weeks today, thanks as ever for reading…

Two more
things worthy of note before I wish you a great weekend! Firstly, next Tuesday
our friends at Bird On The Wire have a show on at the 100 Club with JAD FAIR and NORMAN BLAKE, so if you fancy seeing the men behind Half Japanese
and Teenage Fanclub play together you can find tickets here:
Furthermore,
on June 8th Dictionary Pudding have UMBERTO
booked at Corsica Studios, definitely worth checking out too, highly
recommended etc:
Hoping the
weekend lasts forever for you!
