Nap Eyes return to London this August!

Nap Eyes will be coming back to London this August, exciting news!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

NAP EYES
Thursday 31 August
Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, 44 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB

NAP EYES hail from Nova Scotia and make crooked, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs, their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth's magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia and drinking too much. In the world of Nap Eyes, workaday details punctuate (and puncture) cosmic concerns, as songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitarist Nigel Chapman wrestles with air and angels, struggling (and often failing) to reconcile the Romantic rifts, both real and imagined, that define our lives: between chaos and order; solipsism and fellowship; the anxiety of social (dis)orders both big and small; and the various intersections and oppositions of religion, art, and science. It's the sound of being young and alive in the city, a tenuous and impermanent counterpoise of recklessness and anxiety, archness and earnestness. Following the reissue of their 2014 debut 'Whine of the Mystic' on Paradise of Bachelors, Nap Eyes released an album of all-new material entitled 'Thought Rock Fish Scale' last year, following that up with two incredible London shows!

New Bamboo album details, plus upcoming Wolf Eyes London show outlined!

Morning there!
This week we’re very pleased to announce that our pre-order link is now live for our upcoming new album by Bamboo. The extraordinary album is entitled The Dragon Flies Away and weaves Japanese/Korean folkloric myths into the personal fabric of being. Released on May 26th, the album is available to order on transparent blue vinyl and digipak CD as of now!
Bamboo is the ongoing project from Nick Carlisle (of Peepholes) and Rachel Horwood (of Trash Kit, Halo Halo). Vivid and deeply poignant, Bamboo's music locks into a magnetic attraction between Horwood's flawlessly resonant folk cadence and Carlisle's pristine synth production. Initially released last winter on a limited run of 50 cassettes with an accompanying zine designed by Horwood, The Dragon Flies Away tells a story loosely associated with the Hannya demon mask of Noh theatre plays such as Dojoji, and reflects the range of emotion the Hannya mask is capable of displaying: obsession, jealousy, sorrow and rage. The Dragon Flies Away presents its story in two acts and is now presented newly re-mastered with a gatefold sleeve and lyric / artwork sheet. Horwood’s evocative paintings are given centre stage with the packaging, allowing the album's story to grow beyond sound, making the journey all the more immersive.
Have a listen to ‘Always Running’, living up to its name with its propulsive beat and plucked rhythm, building to a chase for Rachel’s dramatic vocal turn.

Sticking with records, yesterday Clash Magazine premiered a new track from our upcoming debut album from Feature. The song is called ‘Reeling’ and can be heard here, enjoy!
Banishing Ritual will be released on LP through Upset The Rhythm on April 7th.
"It's another understated gem from Feature, with the three-piece yet again eschewing grand statements to get on with the much more profound business of simply being an excellent band."

Also, Xiu Xiu's 'Wondering' video has just surfaced for baby-powder infused air on Paper Magazine. RIYL stuffed unicorns, molten wax, candy cigarettes and reading in bed.
'Wondering' is taken from Xiu Xiu's brand new album 'Forget', out now on Upset The Rhythm.

In terms of live shows, we’d like to thank you for coming out to see Milky Wimpshake last week, was great to see you there, never thought I’d hear their first album live in full. Our next show is Wolf Eyes in two weeks time, with Mumdance and Guttersnipe, plus a plethora of esteemed record spinners. It doesn’t get any better than that, ExFed Warehouse is our venue of choice and you can find full details below.
Talking of shows, in the last few days we have confirmed concerts over the summer for TERRY and a rare triple headline mind warp of a show from Ducktails, James Ferraro and Spencer Clark. Listings for both of those can be found amongst our show programme that concludes this swift dispatch, along with ticket links etc. Read on for everything and more…

WOLF EYES are the USA's longest-running homemade, primitive, electronic, poetry & radical vibes trio. They don't just release albums they launch scotched, taped nuclear audio fronts on humanity. Wolf Eyes dropped a behemoth of a record last year with 'I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces' on Jack White's Third Man Records, but this time they are switching things up in more ways than one for their forthcoming 'Undertow' album. The Detroit dark ambient sculptors are launching a new imprint called Lower Floor Music, and the album will be the first release on the label. The first foray into the new album is the title track, which is self-described as a "sea-bottom R&B sound lurch" featuring ambient synth and haunting spoken vocals. This show acts as an official album launch, celebrating the release of 'Undertow' into the world.
MUMDANCE has built a reputation as one of the world’s most inventive DJs and producers, drawing from sounds from across the world but always putting his own unique spin on them. His early days as a producer saw him collaborate with big names from both Europe (Brodinski, Jammer, Skepta) and further afield, such as Mexican legend Toy Selectah, Brazilian groups Bondo Do Role and Banda Uó, and later Egyptian mahraganat icon Sadat. In 2013, following a two-year hiatus from original music, Mumdance released his most critically acclaimed music to date. His 2013 mixtape Twists & Turns was named FACT Magazine’s best album of the year, while his collaborations with Novelist, ‘Take Time’ and ‘1 Sec’ (released on legendary label XL Recordings), mark two of the biggest anthems from grime's recent revival, and topped end of year charts from Resident Advisor, Mixmag, FACT, Dummy, Noisey and more. Recently Mumdance has also launched Different Circles, his record label with Logos that specialises in ‘weightless’ - an already-influential combination of grime, techno, ambient music, sound design and more, and collaborated with artists such as Micachu, Pinch, AJ Tracey and Nozinja. For this performance Mumdance will present a new set of modular synth workouts.
GUTTERSNIPE are a Leeds drums/guitar duo who dive straight into a cauldron of hellish improv-skronk, paint-stripping abstract noise and nightmarishly deconstructed sonic catharsis – imagine the esoteric mayhem of Angel Blood combined with the venue-destroying psychic power of early Boredoms and Naked City, and you ain’t even close. Comprising the duo of Xylocopa Violacea and Bdallophytum, if Guttersnipe don’t blow away your cobwebs, nothing will.

Hope you have a brilliant weekend, thanks for your time!

New London show for TERRY announced!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

TERRY
Friday 30 June
The Lexington
96-98 Pentonville Road, Islington, N1 9JB

7.30pm | £8.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/393203

TERRY is getting ready, combing his hair, buttoning his jacket, turning the key in the door. "I'm doing fine," sings Terry out loud, he knows. Divide him into four and you get Al Montfort (UV Race, Total Control, Dick Diver etc.), Amy Hill (Constant Mongrel, School Of Radiant Living), Xanthe Waite (Primo, Mick Harvey Band) and Zephyr Pavey (Eastlink, Total Control, Russell Street Bombings). Inevitably, Terry likes to make a noise. Drums, guitars and all his voices come into play, making a solid raft for Terry's inner musings to navigate the languid rapids. This all unravels at its own pace, sometimes drifting into glam pop and country backwaters, always conducting a conversation with the commonplace. Love is a highway, but you’re not likely to find Terry there anymore. He’s on the plane. Terry saw the light, he put on his sunhat and is heading to Europe. Debut album, ‘Terry HQ’ was released last year by Upset The Rhythm, look out for a new album around this tour!

Milky Wimpshake, Robert Sotelo & The Plan in London tomorrow!

Hello again!

Upset the Rhythm are heading over to The Islington tomorrow for a very special show celebrating 20 years since Milky Wimpshake released their superbly charming debut album ‘Bus Route To Your Heart’. As true advocates of the UK underground for over two decades, Milky Wimpshake fronted by the inestimable Pete Dale always impress. They are sincere, funny, moving and sometimes pointed and it’s a great pleasure to host them for this epic milestone. Joining them on stage will be two support sets from the beguilingly melodic Robert Sotelo and hot off the presses Southend group The Plan, featuring members of Wetdog, Private Trousers and Subway Sect. Tickets are £8 on the door from 7.30pm, with live music commencing an hour later.

Full write-ups can be read below, including one for our upcoming Wolf Eyes show this month, with all the DJs taking us into the Wolf rave now announced.

In other UTR news there’s a fascinating interview with Ravioli Me Away that went live on The Quietus this week that we’d recommend checking out.

We also moved up the Priests concert from The Victoria to OSLO due to phenomenal demand for tickets. So take note that we now have some more available for a short time.

OK, we’ll leave you with a brand new track from our upcoming Rat Columns album ‘Candle Power’, pre-empting the only attitude that’ll get you through the downpours today. Get soaked!

MILKY WIMPSHAKE
‘20th Anniversary Show!’
ROBERT SOTELO
THE PLAN
Saturday 4 March
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT

MILKY WIMPSHAKE are a passionate punk band from Newcastle Upon Tyne. The band formed in the early 1990s as part of the Slampt Underground organisation, a label and arts umbrella that supported many of the best UK DIY acts including The Yummy Fur, Pussycat Trash, Red Monkey and personal favourites Bette Davis & The Balconettes. Milky Wimpshake play love songs for punk rockers, protest tunes, covers of Northern Soul classics, and some new classics of their own. Characterised by Pete Dale’s wry lyrics and playful, direct guitar riffs, Milky Wimpshake are true stalwarts and legends of the underground and have recorded several ‘personal vs political’ albums in recent times for the mighty Fortuna Pop imprint. This show celebrates the 20th anniversary of their 100% brilliant debut album 'Bus Route To Your Heart', times flies!
http://www.microsofa.net/mw/

ROBERT SOTELO intends to channel ‘Ram’-era McCartney without the chops, at once intimate and ambitiously layered pop music garnished in naive sincerity. Attempting to push beyond limited means, towards the absurd and abundant idea that recreating the feel and sound of The Beatles remains paramount an objective, the entire project rests on the uncertainty and confusion of mid-thirties existentialism and the exploration of the individual post-social life. Accompanied by a host of friends this initial performance will use the recorded compositions as a template on which Sotelo may attempt to draw out and utilise the individual merits of each musician to reconfigure and sensualise the jams. Sotelo’s astonishing debut album ‘Cusp’ will be released through Upset The Rhythm later this year.

THE PLAN harness unruly beats and stamp sweet vocal harmonies all over them. Post-punk in origins but evolving and revolving, its members have previously appeared in bands like Wetdog, Private Trousers and Vic Goddard's Subway Sect, and all live by the sea in sunny Southend.
