Just a quick heads up about our two shows next week. Next Tuesday we
pitch up at Power Lunches for an evening of extra-terrestrial electronics and
heavy minimalism with GUARDIAN ALIEN,
DON’T ARGUE and CURLING HANDS. Then the following Sunday we return to The Grosvenor
for one last time before it closes for our NO
BALLS (members of BRAINBOMBS), TORTURING NURSE and SEALINGS show, all things in extremity,
only up close! Read on for full blurbs on both of those concerts.
This last week we’ve also confirmed new shows for MAGIK MARKERS, a two day WOLF
EYES special at Café OTO (seeing them headline and present their solo projects)
and a UTR label party at the end of August with SILVER FOX, TRASH KIT, THE PHEROMOANS, RAVIOLI ME AWAY and DOG
CHOCOLATE all performing! Exciting stuff I’m sure you’ll agree. Thanks for
taking the time to read this humble missive, enjoy your week…

CURLING HANDS
Tuesday 8
July

GUARDIAN ALIEN, led by the unparalleled drumming of
Greg Fox, are an integral part of a new wave of New York avant-garde. Taking
inspiration from those that came before, such as Milford Graves (with whom Fox
has studied), and the great minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, Guardian Alien
rejects previously established forms while selectively contorting elements of
many into a wholly unique and personal new order. Striking a unique balance
between sounds produced acoustically and electronically, its latest work,
'Spiritual Emergency' released by Thrill Jockey, shows the group harnessing
instability and inter-planetary fluctuations, pushing its sound in multiple
directions simultaneously. The album’s first side consists of a series of
radically different improvised vignettes, beginning with the hushed, intricate
tabla rhythms and cut-up vocals of “Tranquilizer” before launching into the
brief, ecstatic bursts of “Mirror” and the robotic syncopation of “Vapor,”
finally peaking with the fuzzed-out wall of drone that is “Mirage.” When Fox’s
polyrhythmic pounding and Alexandra's Drewchin’s bubbling electrics enter, the
piece quickly escalates and never sits still, the quintet reveling in the
metaphysical revelation that results in the ensuing 20 minutes of reflective
frenzy. Fox also currently plays as a member of Zs and has continued to
collaborate with a remarkable array of musicians, including Ben Frost, Colin
Stetson, Dustin Wong and Kid Millions.

DON'T ARGUE are a cosmic synth duo
made up of Monika Krol from Meddicine and Nick Carlisle of Peepholes. They
recently teamed up together to serve up 20 minutes of sleek future sounds for a
cassette release on SixSixSixties. Monika whispers over glacial synthetic
soundscapes whilst kaleidoscopic rhythms erupt out by Nick's dexterous fingers.

CURLING HANDS is the heavy psych project
of William Rees, a composer and multi-instrumentalist currently based in
London. Focusing primarily on manipulation of the electric guitar, Curling
Hands seeks to explore the connection between heavy metal and early 60’s
minimalism.

NO BALLS are a Swedish proto-punk band comprised of Drajan Bryngelsson and Dan Råberg from the legendary Brainbombs. Monotonous, repetitive and brutal with some hints at no wave, No Balls use drums and guitars, whilst some vocals and trumpets thrown in occasionally to create a sound that's raw, intense and in your face. Kind of like a nihilistic mix of Shit & Shine, DNA and Ruins. Their debut LP, 'Come Clean', sold out immediately through Release The Bats and has since been reissued through Streak / Who Can You Trust and Permanent. Its music that could be described as “dumb” or “brainless” and the same has been said of The Stooges, but like the Ann Arbor deities, No Balls navigate a route-one course direct to the very essence of what it is about raucous guitars and drums that can (in the right hands) make you feel you should throw yourself around a room. Simple, direct, unrefined and with absolutely maximal raw power. There's an almost feral and loose attitude with feedbacking shards splintering your ears & slurred, garbled lyrics buried underneath the psychotic punk melee. You'll truly be sucked into their wonderful vortex of cyclic scuzz rifferama, flailing beats and general ecstatic dirge.

TORTURING NURSE emphatically tear to shreds the idea that their hometown of Shanghai is a city incapable of pushing artistic boundaries. The harsh noise group’s performances have featured brutal walls of static, screeching distortion and spinechilling screams. Although guitars and microphones are occasionally used, instruments at past shows have included umbrellas, computer chipboards and meat cleavers. They are hardly what you would call conventional. Given that frontman Junky describes Torturing Nurse's sound as 'harsh as fuck', it's hardly surprising that audiences at their shows remain small. Yet the group has garnered international acclaim in the noise community, and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore reportedly names them among his favourite artists. Torturing Nurse have over 200 releases, mainly through their noise label Shasha Records so there's lots to check out!

SEALINGS is Liam Burbridge and Michael Cotter, they hail from Brighton and have been making a racket for quite some time now. Early releases saw them as a duo utilising a drum machine but now they have been joined by a third member, Scott Reeve on drums. Heavy on the distortion and feedback, Sealings harness all the best parts of punk, filter them through ear bleeding shoegaze-esq feedback, black metal blast beats and outsider indie meanderings. Throw into the mix some broken noise which brings an industrial edge to the recordings and you have something that sounds ultimately unique in an age of by numbers lo-fi garage rock. The new Sealings LP is coming out on Faux Discx records over the Summer, whilst previous releases have been through some of our other favourite UK labels… Clandestine Records, Tye Dye Tapes and Italian Beach Babes.
