THE UV RACE and WOLF EYES this week!

Hey there!
Thanks so much for coming to our recent shows for Guardian Alien, No Balls and Sleaford Mods, lots of highlights from those three! Our next concert takes place tomorrow at Corsica Studios with Australia’s paragons of punk, THE UV RACE, touching down for their London debut. We’re lucky enough to have SEEDS OF DOUBT, PRIMETIME and a MICKEY GLOSS DJ joining the lineup, so that’s all things boisterous, roughshod and inspired catered for. Please note that we’ll have tickets on the door and live music will start around 8.30pm. We’re also taking this opportunity to mention our event WOLF EYES – The Double that begins this weekend. On Saturday we have WOLF EYES headlining Café OTO with the ascerbic ANNIHILATING LIGHT and MARK DICKER supporting. Then the following Tuesday, August 5th, we have WOLF EYES return in their fantastically varied, solo guises as REGRESSION, HENRY & HAZEL SLAUGHTER and CRAZY JIM. Really excited for all of these! This week we’ve also confirmed Chris Johanson’s band SUN FOOT to play at Power Lunches next month. One last piece of news, August 11th sees us release a new 7” by no wave wranglers SPRAY PAINT from Austin, Texas. In an attempt to soundtrack the rest of this message you can listen to the a-side entitled ‘Cussin’ here! They’ll be over in London for Halloween too!

THE UV RACE appeared in 2007 as an odd collection of backstory-less every-people from Warragul in rural Victoria, trading on a brand of roughshod punk that featured anything from burned-down orphanages to the proud wearing of a used condom. It was blissfully mindless and sordid, wrapped in a grinning charm that, no matter how close their societal swipes came to the chin, still allowed them to come across with a sense of warmth. Through several EPs and records, not a whole lot has changed in that regard, except for a newfound significance for the band in their adopted home town of Melbourne, and across the capital cities where Australia’s garage-loving communities thrive.

The band are more than a five-piece, finding themselves a sprawling family that has cross-pollinated across Melbourne via acts like Total Control, Straightjacket Nation, Dick Diver and School of Radiant Living. The names that inhabit the band – Al Montfort, Dan Stewart, Georgia Rose, Marcus Rechsteiner, Alex Glazov and Moses Williams – have become staples, as synonymous with the city’s music scene as their contemporaries. Sporting a stunned, woozy post-punk, The UV Race then go about bashing their songs on the forehead with a tire iron, letting them lurch on, dizzy and dangerous. The bangers veer wildly around tight corners, and their slower songs have a half-raw gentleness to them, as if the band knows they’ve been badly wounded and must take care not to jostle them too hard. There's a stubborn simplicity in most of their tracks. You can hear it in the band’s pick-dragging bass lines, its zombified four-four beats, its bull-headed insistence on the first rhyme that comes to mind – pig with jig, walking with talking, beach with reach. "It seems we are too chill for punkers, too arty for the garage folk and too stupid for the indie crowd,” said Al Montfort, the UV Race’s guitarist, in an interview a year or so ago. Yet, the UV Race straddle where most people would fall between and for that they continue to be one of the more contradictory, elusive and interesting bands of the current garage punk revival, balancing art and humour, gentleness and brutality, straight-on rocking out with sound experiments. Check out their records now on Aarght!, In The Red, HoZac and their own imprint UV Records.

SEEDS OF DOUBT have been inhabiting mouldy practice rooms, strung out house parties and the kinda venues you wouldn't go on a first date for a while now. Branded No-fi, shit-pop and a bunch of other self-effacing terms it's true there's a level of 'un-production' here rarely seen but behind that on their recent tape with Italian Beach Babes lie five songs with five perfect melodies and references. Already self-releasing a 12-song cassette of solo recordings by founding member Chris, the cassette tracks see an extra three members added as they hone their skills, creating a more focused and concise sound. The bandcamp link below also boasts their brand new 'Shed Philosophy' EP, well worth a listen!

PRIMETIME are self-proclaimed 'chaotic neurotics', finding their balance amid spirited punk clatter with a sense of propulsive fun and maximal energy. Their songs are rampages of sound as raw and minimal as they are inventive, and the band are soon to release their debut four track EP through La Vida Es Un Mus. Harking back to the glory years of 1979 to 1982, 'Tied Down' from the EP is their calling card, a scratchy mix of Kleenex and Delta 5 with an instant hook that won't fail to get you moving.

WOLF EYES - THE DOUBLE

WOLF EYES' infamous blistering noise propelled them from being a dank Ann Arbour, Michigan basement sensation to the finest ranks of Sub Pop without ever losing a shred of credibility. From touring with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K., Wolf Eyes have crossed borders into popularity which few other such confrontational units of their ilk have been able to and kept straight and narrow on their blazing path. Originally started as the solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, he was soon joined by Aaron Dilloway in 1998, John Olson in 2000 then Mike Connelly and now Crazy Jim. They has released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label and Nate Young’s AA Records. This show sees WOLF EYES play a headline show drawing from their incredible new album 'No Answer: Lower Floors' out last year on De Stijl Records, the second show of The Double sees the band perform in their solo guises. Anyone whose seen them play live can attest the overwhelming force of a Wolf Eyes performance must be seen/felt/heard to be believed.

ANNIHILATING LIGHT casually qualify as a supergroup, if a duo can be, being the potentially lethal cocktail of Stefan Jaworzyn and Heather Leigh. Jaworzyn, founder member of Skullflower, briefly part of Whitehouse, driving force behind Ascension and Descension, proprietor of the revered Shock Records label and suddenly poking at the public ear again all of a sudden with a raft of new and re-discovered records appearing out of the blue in the last 6 months and veering across everything from his trademark guitar excruciations to pounding synth&noise electronica workouts. Heather Leigh of course is the coalminer’s daughter from Texas with the killer voice/pedal steel combination that’s graced recordings as part of Charalambides, Scorces, Dream/Aktion Unit, Jailbreak, Jandek and her own slew of terrifyingly inescapable releases on a range of desirable labels. Taking their name from Jaworzyn’s recent LP on the Kye label.

MARK DICKER works to create an all-enveloping sound-world; an eerie place where frequencies clash and clusters of sonic turbulence ooze forth and then hang, flesh-like, from a skeletal framework. Having eschewed the shrill staccato Casio-riffing that he brought to previous project Trencher for more heavy-weight synthesis devices, Dicker has moved into a more sophisticated area of sonic symbolism and juxtaposition. He has released cassettes on Beartown and Bunkland Records and, when not performing solo, can be found sludging it up in Palehorse and occasionally racket-earing with Sly and the Family Drone.

REGRESSION is the solo project of Nate Young, a founding member of seminal Detroit noise band Wolf Eyes. More recently he's been honing an equally distinctive solo sound that blends myriad sources from musique concrète, vintage film atmospherics, layered synths and archive library recordings into something thrillingly intense. Summoning up crushingly ominous crepuscular soundscapes and synth-washed phantasmagoria, Young undercuts the brutalism of Wolf Eyes with the kind of ambient dread that conjures images of lost horror soundtracks from the 70's. Minimal analogue synth violence is punctuated by thunder cracks of metal percussion ala the early Akita/Null Merzbow duets, massively doomy beat hypnotics and an atmosphere that's somewhere between the most apocalyptic Throbbing Gristle recordings, Coil's Musick To Play In The Dark, The Conet Project and your favourite Kraut kosmonaut. Young's most recent album 'Blinding Confusion' (out now on NNA Tapes) has the feel of a kind of post-synth electro-acoustic ritual, albeit tied-in with a visionary compositional aesthetic that is a couple of miles beyond your average weird-beard in a basement non-vibe.

HENRY & HAZEL SLAUGHTER is a solo moniker of Wolf Eyes' John Olson seeing him cook up some absolutely ace, squashed and f*cked basement techno. And when we say f*cked, we mean totally backwards in the best possible sense of the word. Unlike his bandmate Nate Young's Moon Pool & Dead Band techno exploits, this is waaaay more blasted and basically demented, decimating unhealthy loops of sludgy kicks and scummy synths with salty distortion and a wickedly unhinged sense of funk. To add to the fun, each track ends in a locked groove. Massively recommended to fans of KPLR or Astral Social Club who want to go more primordial.

CRAZY JIM aka James ‘Crazy Jim’ Baljo, is proof that not every side-project of Wolf Eyes results in noise. Veering towards the sweet and ambient, Crazy Jim uses only guitars to build huge waves of tonic abstraction. Nate Young credits Crazy Jim as "the first person to coin the term INZANE and plays and lives accordingly", look out for some sweet folk-tuned bliss.
