News and upcoming shows for Chris Cohen and Terry!

Hello there!

I hope you’re having a good week, we’re still reeling from the Rattle album launch, thank you very much for helping make that such a success. We have shows for Chris Cohen, Pikelet, Terry, The Rebel and Sarcasm all on the horizon too, so please find info on those early September events outlined in full below.

https://billetto.co.uk/en/events/half-cocked-uk-premiere
Next Monday you’ll find us at Moth Club for the UK premiere of ‘Half-Cocked’. The film follows a group of kids who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band in order to stay ‘on the road’. Featuring Ian Svenonius (who has also provided a special video introduction) and members of Slint, Rodan and the Grifters playing versions of themselves, the film from 1994 (financed by Matador Records) has never been screened before in the UK. It’s an incredible window into America’s underground music scene and the best bit is that tickets are free, you just need to rsvp here, see you there: https://billetto.co.uk/en/events/half-cocked-uk-premiere

This week we also proudly announced that Sauna Youth will be performing for us on October 1st at Kamio. Following on from their US tour, this special homecoming show will also feature David West (of Rat Columns and Liberation), Score and General Echo Soundsystem (Black Time / DJs). It’ll be so great to welcome them home and to see them play a blazing set after many weeks touring. Tickets on sale now!

Due to popular demand (you asked, we listened) we’ve also re-printed our John Maus t-shirt, which has been out of stock for what seems like forever. Considered by many in our inbox as a modern classic, the original black on white design is back in our webstore now, in a variety of sizes: http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/

Oh yes and it’s ‘LIVE’ as in living, not necessarily just as in playing live! Printed by the good people at The Positive Press, let’s enact a powerful new being through the wearing of said garment!

CHRIS COHEN
PIKELET
Monday 5 September
Cafe OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £8 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/361146

CHRIS COHEN is a native of Los Angeles currently residing in the farmlands of Vermont. He is the child of a former music business executive and a former Broadway actress. His resume of prior musical projects is a long one: as a contributing member of The Curtains, Cryptacize, Deerhoof, and Natural Dreamers, he released 10 full-length albums between 2002 and 2008. Along the way, Cohen was also a touring player with White Magic, Cass McCombs, Haunted Graffiti and Danielson, among others, for stints both short and long. All of this culminated in his first release under his own name, and his first for Captured Tracks, 'Overgrown Path'. A singing drummer who writes psychedelic pop music, Cohen also records his own bass, Casio MT65, piano, and guitar. Tracks like 'Caller No. 99' and 'Monad' follow idiosyncratic forms, but are still melodic in an unconventional and homegrown way; like the best of Robert Wyatt, Mayo Thompson, Syd Barrett, and Jerry Garcia. 'Overgrown Path' unfolded its delicate and unexpected arrangements around Cohen's relaxed baritone, unhurriedly revealing the detailed world wrapped up in each song. 'As If Apart', the long-awaited sequel to Chris Cohen's 2012 soft psych garden of unearthly alter-pop, follows on from its predecessor with another bittersweet ensemble of dreamy, complex songs. Pushing the idiosyncrasies of Cohen's melodic and rhythmic approach into even more fractured, shifting spaces, 'As if Apart' unsettles lazy pop conventions, upending jaded heads and hearts with an expansive, moody psychedelia.

PIKELET is a Melbourne exploratory art-synth performer called Evelyn Morris. Evelyn formed Pikelet in 2007 and has released three full-length albums (on Chapter Records), all of which have received great critical acclaim. Pikelet started out as layered experimental folk music and has traversed many musical territories over the years. Currently the sound is based around experimentation with synth, odd rhythms and found sound, all tied to a core melodic and harmonic focus. Evelyn has also been involved in many collaborations with artists and groups such as The Boredoms, for their Boadrum 10/10/10 performance. She's done soundtracks for short films, art installations and dance performances. As a session musician Evelyn has accompanied many artists such as Ariel Pink, Grand Salvo, Laura Jean and Frida Hyvönen. Evelyn describes her new album, Tronc as featuring “weirder pop than ever before.”

TERRY
THE REBEL
SARCASM
Monday 12 September
The Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Rd, Dalston, E8 3AS

TERRY is getting ready, combing his hair, buttoning his jacket, turning the key in the door. "I'm doing fine," sings Terry out loud, he knows. Divide him into four and you get Al Montfort (UV Race, Total Control, Dick Diver etc.), Amy Hill (Constant Mongrel, School Of Radiant Living), Xanthe Waite (Mick Harvey Band) and Zephyr Pavey (Eastlink, Total Control, Russell Street Bombings). Inevitably, Terry likes to make a noise. Drums, guitars and all his voices come into play, making a solid raft for Terry's inner musings to navigate the languid rapids. This all unravels at its own pace, sometimes drifting into glam pop and country backwaters, always conducting a conversation with the commonplace. Love is a highway, but you’re not likely to find Terry there anymore. He’s on the plane. Terry saw the light, he put on his sunhat and is heading to Europe for the first time. Debut album, ‘Terry HQ’ was released this summer by Upset The Rhythm.

THE REBEL is prolific London outsider Ben Wallers; a charismatic lone wolf in a cowboy hat or trilby and a tie whose electrified howls are too idiosyncratic to be broken down into market-oriented terms. It is difficult to sketch a thumbnail summary of a musician who has amassed a vast and unwieldy discography under a variety of names and genres: the most widely acclaimed is probably the Country Teasers, but he also moonlights as, or in, the Rebel, the Company, the Male Nurse, the Beale, the Stallion, the Black Poodle and Skills on Ampex, across folk, country, garage, post-punk, no wave and electronic pop. In the main part The Rebel is centred around twisted Casio drones, clanging guitar and some defiantly deadpan vocals, all thrown in the pan and pressure-cooked in Wallers' mind. Wallers has amassed a near-unquantifiable discography over the past 20 years, from scores of more or less “official” LPs, EPs and 7”s to seemingly endless self-released cassettes.

SARCASM provide the dystopian post-punk, featuring members of Efialtis, Semi and Snob. Check out their ‘Total Institution’ tape that just came out through Far So Far.

Talk again soon! Have a great weekend!
