CHRIS COHEN AND MARNIE STERN next week! and LONNIE HOLLEY announced for LONDON

Too soon for June?
So here we are on the last day of Spring, thanking you for supporting us through our crazy busy May and especially to everyone for coming to see MOUNT EERIE last week. Four way vocals are definitely the way to go! We've got two suitably, splendid shows lined up for next week. Monday at Dalston Victoria sees the one and only CHRIS COHEN in town again for the first time since his jaw-dropping performance at our last Xmas party, who doesn't love a singing drummer? Then on Wednesday we're lucky enough to have MARNIE STERN, SKY LARKIN and TRASH KIT all playing for us at The Garage, very, very exciting! In other news, we're announcing today a "short notice" concert for the truly remarkable artist LONNIE HOLLEY, the show takes place in three weeks time on June 24th and full details follow in our listings closer. To get you in the mood for Summer, check out Lonnie's heartbreakingly beautiful track from his recent Dust To Digital album…

CHRIS COHEN
KING ALFRED MAN OF LEISURE
SHOWMAN'S WAGON
Monday 3 June
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £7.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/213093

CHRIS COHEN is a 37-year-old native of Los Angeles currently residing in the farmlands of Vermont. He is the child of a former music business executive and a former Broadway actress. His resumé of prior musical projects is a long one: as a contributing member of The Curtains, Cryptacize, Deerhoof, and Natural Dreamers, he released 10 full-length albums between 2002 and 2008. Along the way, Cohen was also a touring player with White Magic, Cass McCombs, Haunted Graffiti and Danielson, among others, for stints both short and long. All of this has culminated in his first release under his own name, and his first for Captured Tracks, 'Overgrown Path'. A singing drummer who writes psychedelic pop music, Cohen also records his own bass, Casio MT65, piano, and guitar. Tracks like “Caller No. 99″ and “Monad” follow idiosyncratic forms, but are still melodic in an unconventional and homegrown way – like the best of Robert Wyatt, Mayo Thompson, Syd Barrett, and Jerry Garcia. 'Overgrown Path' unfolds its delicate and unexpected arrangements around Cohen’s relaxed baritone, unhurriedly revealing the detailed world wrapped up in each song. Also, be sure to check out Cohen's brilliant recent split 7" with Reveille on Clapping Music too!
http://capturedtracks.com/artists/chris-cohen/

KING ALFRED MAN OF LEISURE is Iain Paxon, Jacindy Cartland and Stuart Cartland. King Alfred Man Of Leisure have previously released various memos and hotwires for Brighton labels Sex Is Disgusting, Tuff Enuff and Hark! However, new album 'We Are Submarine' on Savoury Days adopts a more substantial approach to their interpretation of mesmeric, minimal pop (and song length) with insightful results. Although mercifully the realm of the serious artist is one steered well clear of, these latest offerings discuss topics such as men in white vans, the devil and sub-aqua life, make it a total must hear!

SHOWMAN'S WAGON are a band of enthusiasts. In their wagon there hangs a snatcher bag where Johnny whirlwind works off the excess whilst a bi-lingual and ambidextrous troll models follies to better understand this excess. Entering their forgery of sound is not for timorous wussies. One member, a fearless bass-guzzler by anyone's reckoning, recently broke his foot in the attempt. They are going down a rocky road and their minds, now mush, are fizzing from all the bumps (and snare hits (coming fast)). Try and catch them before they unhinge. No recordings/links up yet!

MARNIE STERN
SKY LARKIN
TRASH KIT

MARNIE STERN fully lives up to her reputation as “the lady who shreds,” but for Marnie Stern, shredding is not enough. After putting out three critically-acclaimed albums, Marnie could have gotten away with putting out another album filled with her richly layered sound, singular frenetic finger tapping and quasi-philosophical lyrics. However, as anyone who has given her last few albums a good listen can tell, Marnie is not one to stand still. Instead she attacks her musical evolution with full frontal bravado, reveling in musical risk instead of relaxing in the comforts of the known. For Marnie, musical possibility drives her ambition. Her new album, 'The Chronicles of Marnia', finds Marnie not only working with a new drummer (Oneida’s Kid Millions), but also passionately subtracting from her normally dense song structures to craft a sound that is both familiar and wholly original. Her trademark exuberant guitar work is still present, in fact, absent of a few layers of grit, it’s even more evident. “We stripped away a lot of the layers and a lot of unnecessary interweaving guitar parts. There’s less clutter and more of staying on a part without adding too much instrumentation.” Through the subtractive production process, Marnie’s voice became more prominent, a fact that kind of concerns Marnie, “I get worried that I am coming across as someone who thinks they are a ‘singer,’ as opposed to my usual mishmash of voices that aren’t always in key,” she said about the album’s more pronounced vocals. “I grapple with that attitude because I think it's important as a musician to try and be as proficient as possible, or try to put a lot of work into it. I suppose in my own way, I put a ton of time into singing and trying to find interesting melody ideas, I just never think of myself as having a ‘nice’ voice.” It’s an enervating change for an artist who in the past has always skillfully buried her vocals under the guitar and drum tracks. Even as Marnie evolves from what Pitchfork called her “art-metal math-rock bubblegum pop” genre, fans will still find themselves jumping head first into the album and quickly bonding with the emotionally resonant material, cascading hooks and transcendental guitar riffs. Plus, the album shreds. She is Marnie Stern after all.

SKY LARKIN are two old friends and one newer one. London called Katie away for a while and Doug ran away to Scotland but now Yorkshire holds us all. They've appeared with Broken Social Scene, The Gossip, Architecture in Helsinki, Menomena, Land of Talk, The Organ, The Little Ones, The Research, Howling Bells, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Forward Russia, Napoleon IIIRD, Los Campesinos!, Hot Club de Paris, 1990s, The Vibration, Metronomy. They wanna be with you everywhere, Wichita Recordings is their home, check out recent album 'Kaleide', packed to the brim with chiming guitars, rousing chorus rushes and grin inducing sentiment. Sky Larkin will be touring with Marnie Stern on all her UK dates, exciting!

TRASH KIT are a gang of facepainted flag-bearers who have a wild feel for melody and a heartfelt kick inside each song. Mixing chaos, considered songcraft and overlapping harmonies in equal measure, the female trio sound as joyful as they are focussed. Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray formed the band in early 2009, and since then have been lighting up London, energising the UK underground with their raw performances and promise. Trash Kit have a sound of their very own, it's both urbane and primal, drawing on the potential of punk and the naturalism of an internal folk music. Trash Kit have an awesome album and 7” available through UTR now plus a recent split 7” with Woolf on Milk.

MOUNT EERIE
(Multiple vocal, guitar, two basses, percussion set)
SLUSHY GUTS
Friday 24 May
St Giles In The Fields, 60 St Giles High Street, Covent Garden, WC2H 8LG
8pm | £13.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/207364

MOUNT EERIE is Phil Elverum. The 34 year-old multi-instrumentalist has played in other bands, and worked as a producer, but remains best known for this solo project, which began under the name The Microphones in 1997. In 2003, he renamed the project Mount Eerie (and added an “e” to his last name, Elvrum) after returning from a trip to Norway, where he lived alone in a remote cabin for a winter. “Mount Eerie” specifically refers to the mountain on Fidalgo Island, an island an hour and change north of Seattle where you’ll also find Elverum’s lifelong Anacortes, Washington hometown. To date, his most critically acclaimed (and popular) album is the Microphones’ 2001 epic The Glow Pt. 2. The first official Mount Eerie album — following the Microphones’ final 2003 full-length, also called Mount Eerie — is 2005’s No Flashlight. It was followed by 2007’s Mount Eerie pts. 6 & 7, a 132-page, hardcover book of his photography, packaged with a 10” picture disk. In early 2009, the journals he kept and drawings he scribbled in Norway were released as a 144-page hardcover book called Dawn. It came with 16 color photo cards and a CD of songs he wrote while living there. Regardless of the moniker, the various collections include interlocking themes, references to earlier works, and are marked by Elverum’s distinctive naturalist self-recorded lo-fi analog sound that mixes a whispered, gentle voice, which can also yell and bellow, with various strains of sound: His work can be delicately spare or booming and ambitiously layered and noisy, often in the same song. Lyrically, he focuses on memory, first-person storytelling, myth, naturalism, the everyday as sacred, and a sense of place (in and out of Washington State), among other related things. In addition to his extravagantly packaged albums, Elverum has released self-published books (which he illustrates or fills with his photographs) via his own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd. Last year saw Phil release a stunning pair of sister albums called 'Clear Moon' and 'Ocean Roar' dealing with fogs of noise, observational visions and his impeccable sense of song, for this show he's backed up by a pair of bassists, keyboardist and percussion, not to mention arranging his music for multiple vocals, it's definitely going to be special!
http://www.pwelverumandsun.com/

SLUSHY GUTS is a deliberate stripping back to basics, a concerted effort to write a song one could whistle and an exercise in embracing fear. At once melodic and dissonant, poetic and honest, intimate and claustrophobic, Slushy Guts is awkward pop music, naked and uncomfortable, a bundle of subtle unease and a maze of contradictions, a too long sentence, a load of heartfelt non-sense. It tried to just be happy but got confused and came out kinda sad. The recent 'The Bloop, Julia, Train, Slowdown, Whistle, Upsweep and All The While The Hum' album is available now through the website below.

SHOW 500 and BLEACHED and MOUNT EERIE

Well I never!
Tonight sees Upset The Rhythm tolling the "500 shows old" bell all night long! When we started out back in 2003 I had no clue we'd ever reach this milestone, show two was far from our minds, and the idea that we'd still be organising events and releasing record 10 years later would have seemed hilarious, yet here we are! I am so incredibly humbled by everyone's continued support and kind words and help over the years; bands, audience and coal face, Upset the Rhythm is more than the sum of its parts and its you who make us! OK, it's not an awards ceremony, sniff, sniff… so, tonight! The Lexington, DOPE BODY, TONSTARTSSBANDHT and LAB COAST all performing for us, it's going to be the best fun and I hope you can come and celebrate with us, we'll have loads of old posters on the walls, a limited edition t-shirt featuring the poster art from our very first show (DEERHOOF at Needles bar) and so many good vibes you might need to bring a cynical friend to keep grounded. I'm also taking this opportunity to tell you about our BLEACHED and ROYAL LIMP show on Wednesday and our (nearly sold out) MOUNT EERIE show on Friday too, thanks for reading, thanks for everything...

"Upset The Rhythm's 500th show!"

DOPE BODY
TONSTARTSSBANDHT
LAB COAST
Monday 20 May
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £7.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/207764

DOPE BODY are a brutally primal hardcore beast from Baltimore. Born in 2008 out of the dance-friendly confines of the city’s Wham City scene, this unclassifiable, heavy group ventured out into the night to find more like-minds, and came back boasting a spasm of styles and directions. Evolving from blasting three-piece to blistering four-piece, Dope Body enjoy writing their own songs, touring endlessly and pummeling basement parties with a gleeful, wide-eyed fanaticism that the more reasonable among us might mistake for insanity (it ain’t entirely so). Dope Body writhe under their own experiments, swinging from gutterish sludge-punk to snake charmer-on-fire within the confines of a single tune. Rather than comparing their ferocity to other contender, just know that Dope Body is punk spelled upsidedown and standing on its hands. Debut LP 'Nupping' was released on Hit Dat/Hoss a year or so back, whilst stunning new album 'Natural History' came out on Drag City last year and refuses to leave our turntable! Dope Body's new 7" also through Drag City is called 'Saturday' and is available now, it's really, very, very good!
http://dopebody.bandcamp.com/

TONSTARTSSBANDHT, pronounced "TAHN-starts-bandit", are a band of brothers; Andy White and Edwin M. White, with a passion for psychedelic pop and something special they like to call "boogie rock". Hailing from Orlando via Montreal and NYC, they are currently to be seen wandering the streets in a hazy stupor. Using samples like a slowed down Big Country the duo first put together a self-released debut LP in 2009 of melodic wonder called 'An When'. Since then, Tonstartssbandht have released a further seven records, they're latest being released through Arbutus Records, who also work with Grimes and Sean Nicholas Savage. Part country, part unhinged psych soup, part Of Montreal synth-pop group, Tonstartssbandht have been busy gathering a loyal following indebted to their heavy drummed soundscapes, freaked swamps of effects and ecstatic vocal float, which they're now bringing to the UK for the first time. Last month saw Tonstartssbandht touring Russia and the Ukraine alongside Dirty Beaches, their split tour cassette from said event is essential, check out the link below to hear it!
http://tonstartssbandht.bandcamp.com/

LAB COAST have that sort of breezy layered subtle guitar pop sound that's easy to like. Invoking a bit of unpretentious retro sound reminiscent in the catalogs of labels like Slumberland and Sarah. Lab Coast keep it really catchy in that loose but tight way good bands of this variety hit on just right. The flip finds them getting a bit more psyched out and showing some of their more experimental impulses that are subtly at play in all of their songs. Look out for their recent cassette album on Night People and 7" release through Faux Discx.

BLEACHED
ROYAL LIMP
Wednesday 22 May
Corsica Studios, 4/5 Elephant Road, Elephant & Castle, SE17 1LB
8pm | £8.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/213360

BLEACHED are two sisters from LA creating rough-hewed, high-collared, melodic Rock & Roll. Formerly part of Mika Miko, Jessica and Jennifer Clavin were best known for their freewheeling ’77 punk and riot girl lawlessness. In Bleached, they share the same slant towards the hard-edged, but instead veer towards a more vintage ensemble of Ramones bubble-gum, Merle Haggard country, and 60’s psychedelic rock. Raised up deep in the San Fernando Valley, their suburban isolation nurtured the girls' creativity, as they started making their own music at a young age. Sneaking into punk shows over the hill in Hollywood, they grew up to become teenaged underground staples at the all-ages Downtown DIY venue, The Smell. Signed to Kill Rock Stars and Post Present Medium, their all-girl punk band Mika Miko drew international acclaim and won them slots on tours with No Age, Black Lips, and The Gossip. After the breakup of Mika Miko the Clavin sisters vowed to continue working together on music and formed Bleached. Bleached’s playful harmonizing masks the dark topics they sing about: the struggles experienced upon failed relationships and all the sad themes that Stevie Nicks once eloquently expressed. That’s the goal, the sugary and sour re-purposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters. Bleached have 7" singles available now through Ooga Booga, Suicide Squeeze and Art Fag Recordings now, whilst last month saw the band's bombastic debut album 'Ride Your Heart' released worldwide via Dead Oceans.
http://hellobleached.tumblr.com/

ROYAL LIMP is a project that’s still fresh from the womb, so to speak. A bold “I’m here”, posted on Facebook just under a year ago, announced the return of the familiar face of Andy Auld – co-founder of the Sex Is Disgusting label and member of now-defunct Teen Sheikhs, amongst other artistic dabblings – to the musical ether. Since then it’s been something of a quiet year: a few tentative uploads to Soundcloud, a handful of shows, and some glimpsed promises, allowing Royal Limp to spend time fleshing out his “gloomy as fuck tape loops and keyboard jams” with a full band, the future is arriving every second, and we're very excited to see what it has in store for Royal Limp.

FUZZBOX and 500th SHOW

Once more unto the breach!
Firstly, we just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone for coming to our DIRTY BEACHES and DANIEL HIGGS shows already this week, both were truly brilliant, endgame synth punk vs banjo shamanism, we hope you had as much fun as we did! That's not us done for the week though as show 499!!! raises it's head tomorrow at Tufnell Park's Dome with an incomparable lineup of garage rock freakdom and punk psychedelics we've cobbled together under the title of FUZZBOX. Personally I think this could be our biggest, boldest and brightest lineup yet with PURLING HISS, WHITE FENCE, MIKAL CRONIN and JACCO GARDNER all performing alongside (a newly announced) KING TUFF too! Tickets are just £10 (bargainous), and we will have some saved to buy on the door, which opens from 6.30pm, here's tomorrow's show times, how useful…

7.25pm - JACCO GARDNER
8.20pm - KING TUFF
9.15pm - MIKAL CRONIN
10.25 - WHITE FENCE
11.30pm - PURLING HISS

Read on for loads more blurb about FUZZBOX and about Monday's 500th Upset The Rhythm show with DOPE BODY and TONSTARTSSBANDHT too!!!!!! More than 1 show every week for 10 years!!! In other news, we've just confirmed new events in September for SHANNON AND THE CLAMS and an awesome double-headed beast of a party with BLACK PUS (Chippendale from Lighting Bolt's solo warp) and DAN FRIEL (of Parts & Labor), check those listings…

PURLING HISS
WHITE FENCE
MIKAL CRONIN

JACCO GARDNER
Thursday 16 May
Tufnell Park Dome, 178 Junction Road, Tufnell Park, N19 5QQ

PURLING HISS is an umbrella moniker for guitarist Mike Polizze's home recorded overdriven maximal rock excess. He's been stockpiling solo tapes for years, and since 2009, a steady stream of Purling Hiss material has appeared on labels like Woodsist and Permanent. Polizze's recordings don't have the flow of typical home-recorded lo-fi music. Songs stop and start haphazardly; sequencing seems arbitrary, with the albums unfolding more like candid snapshots than cohesive statements. This casual, tossed-off quality is part of the band's charm. Last year's 'Lounge Lizards' on Mexican Summer showcased six songs that stick around like sedan carpet matted with spilled Pepsi and Pat’s wrappers, a hard drill that penetrates historical musical hits, like the Cars through Dinosaur Jr through Monoshock and into the cold, acrid air of present times. Polizze has recently struck gold, recruiting a live band consisting of fellow Philadelphia rock veterans Mike Sneeringer, on drums, and Kiel Everett, on bass. The trio expands the tinny sound of Purling Hiss' records considerably, resulting in workmanlike, head-bopping anthems that set Polizze's guitar pyrotechnics front and center. New album 'Water On Mars' (Drag City) is barely contained, ready to flow through your streets of rage and fire and ruin. Purling Hiss cares, and they've stacked up the guitars, bass and drums to stand tall above the alienated masses.Car-wrecking anthems, for all the right reasons.
http://purlinghiss.bandcamp.com/

WHITE FENCE is a solo project gone band, this time with the inimitable Tim Presley from San Francisco as the man in control. Since 2010, White Fence have released 4 full-length albums and several EPs, a live cassette and the terrific 'Hair' collaboration LP with Ty Segall on Drag City. Presley's albums are all nearly overcrowded by sonic ideas and psychedelic twists. Even one of his simpler songs, the acoustic track 'Balance Yr Heart' off 'Family Perfume Vol. 1', gives the impression that he spliced together two different-but-similar songs that were floating in his head. In just three years, he's managed to poise himself as a prolific artist in a town that runneth over with prolific artists. Presley tempers the softer acoustic moments of his sound with songs slathered in acid-burnt fuzz, stretching it out with echoing psych guitar solos after hammering out a simple, solid power chord hook. Last month, Castle Face released 'Cyclops Reap', a collection of orphan tracks that slipped the noose of previous releases. 'Make Them Dinner at Our Shoes', like every other track on the album, it's masked under a thin layer of hiss. It's hard to tell exactly what he's singing in places - his vocals are occasionally swallowed by his guitar or another sound - but one phrase is always clear: "clear open sky." Those words are backed by bright major chords on an electric guitar and the soft, steady ambiance of a shaker. Like most of White Fence's lyrics, it's unclear what those words are trying to communicate in a literal sense, but packaged the way they are, the emotional connection is clear.

MIKAL CRONIN was raised in Laguna Beach, California, where as a teenager he developed a passion for both surfing and rock & roll. While attending Laguna Beach High School, he fell in with a handful of like-minded music fans, and formed a band that played local parties. After a spell as bassist in surf-punk Charlie & The Moonhearts, Mikal began working on his own garage-accented pop tapping into his love of 80's indie rock. Around the same time, Mikal also befriended kindred spirit Ty Segall, joined his live band and also collaborated on an album together called 'Reverse Shark Attack'. Mikal Cronin's self-titled album was released by Trouble in Mind Records in September 2011. Conceived and recorded as a sort of therapy to help cope with adjusting to life post-college, an ensuing break-up and geographic isolation, Mikal’s solo debut is fully realized, cohesive and beautiful, with themes as personal as they are universal; questioning your future, accepting your past and living in the moment. Taking influences such as late sixties Del Shannon and The Everly Brothers and filtering them through his own mutant California fuzz, Mikal deftly explores his singer/songwriter side that at moments feels like a punk Harry Nilsson or Curt Boettcher that balances sweet melodies and chords with chunky, psychedelic guitar freak-outs. Cronin's brand new album 'MCII', and his first disc for Merge Records, is all about new beginnings, looking at new relationships and growing up in the 21st century. Other than a few guest appearances from Charles Moonhart, Petey Dammit and Ty Segall, Cronin recorded all the instruments / parts himself, lending the record a unique personal pop focus, it's so good! Total must hear for 2013 territory!

KING TUFF aka Kyle Thomas is one of the best guys going in the good-time rock 'n' roll department. He was in a folk collective called Feathers, is the frontman in a stoner-metal band with J Mascis called Witch, and also plays in a great rock band called Happy Birthday. A more enigmatic nomad of a furioso frontman/artist/guitar legend could not be imagined. You can’t make this up. Grinning gold teeth behind blonde shades, in black, skeletal denim, with a studded “KING TUFF” across the shoulders where feral locks fall. His charisma is magnetic, his shows are akin to cheap-beer-soaked tent revivals, he combines the stadium-sized guitar licks of Erik Cartwright with the bratty whine of Eric Cartman, and his solo debut, 2008's 'Was Dead', was the sort of album most scuzz-loving musicians would incinerate their garages to make. Back last May, Sub Pop released King Tuff's self-titled new album. Irreverence is paramount to being in a garage-rock band and Thomas has this in spades. In "Keep on Movin'", he shouts out arcane dance moves and, in his own words, lets his guitar (whose name is Jazijoo) drool. He lets out a comically puny bark in "Stranger". He gives his songs titles like "Loser's Wall" and "Swamp of Love", which sound like landmarks where misfits in the Deep South meet to make out. The album art bears the image of a cartoon bat holding a Gibson guitar and a magic wand. Clichés frowning upon judging a book by its cover need not apply here. There's the too-appropriately-titled opener "Anthem", carried by a double-neck lead begging to be greeted with devil horn gestures. There's the Lynyrd Skynyrd-esque boogie of "Stranger", the freewheeling and fun "Baby Just Break", and climactic closer "Hit & Run". Album highlight 'Bad Thing' is Hunx's 'Hairdresser Blues' spiked with brown liquor and loaded with a supercharged chorus. Completely free of abstraction, King Tuff goes for maximum impact and that's exactly what he achieves!

JACCO GARDNER is a baroque pop multi instrumentalist. He creates a unique sound by combining the sounds of harpsichord, strings, flutes and other classical instruments with raw psychedelic effects. Gardner recorded and engineered new album 'Cabinet of Curiosities' at his Shadow Shoppe Studio in Holland, playing every instrument himself save the drums, having mastered recorder, clarinet, bass, guitar, keyboards and violin as a child. As an adult he also appears to have got to grips with the harpsichord, mellotron, flute and organ, because they're all part of his chamber-pop palette. Expect charmed chord sequences and unexpected key changes, and don't be surprised when things take a turn for the melancholy, even sinister. 'Watching the Moon' has the same creepily Old English air that pervades Syd Barrett's work. 'Lullaby' is the eeriest of all: "I will bury you where the sun goes down," sings Gardner, "deep within the night, sleep when stars are bright." There's something horribly lovely about that image, and something freakily intriguing about Gardner's Cabinet.

SUPREME DICKS tomorrow and DIRTY BEACHES on Monday

Hello, hello!
Tomorrow we have a really rare treat for you! Underground weirdo-rock legends SUPREME DICKS will be performing for us at Dalston Victoria. It's their first show in London for seventeen years, time, absence and hearts fonder grown! In support we have Matt from Talibam!'s new PLATINUM VISION horn party and CHALAQUE from Manchester will also expounding loudly. All the specifics follow, including new listings for DANIEL HIGGS (a second performance added due to demand!), DIRTY BEACHES announced as our secret headliners next Monday in Bethnal Green, plus a new show shouted from the rooftops for personal favourites THE INTELLIGENCE next month! Read up…

SUPREME DICKS
PLATINUM VISION
CHALAQUE
Thursday 9 May
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/205122

SUPREME DICKS are an experimental rock group formed in 1984 in Amherst, Massachussetts by Jon Shere, Steve Shavel and Danny Oxenberg. Their glorious music combines dissonant lo-fi noise, avant-garde, and psychedelic sounds to warped song structures. Rising out of the same scene that produced Dinosaur Jr, Supreme Dicks were vital contributors to the lo-fi and avant garde genres. The band’s constantly revolving line-up (Lou Barlow was a Dick now and again) centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, and Jim Spring, whose psychedelic-yet-twangy brand of rock’n'roll came out of the band’s roots at Hampshire College in the Reagan era. The Dicks released a clutch of incredible records - three albums, a single, a split single and a 12" EP - over a four-year period before not-so-much disbanding as dispersing at the end of 1996. This slow, brooding, hugely affecting body of warped psychedelic work was released as a box set by Jagjaguwar in 2011 entitled 'Breathing And Not Breathing'. In 2012, Supreme Dicks came back together to play a limited number of shows in the US, making this ever-so-rare European tour their first major jaunt in almost 17 years. In the live setting, the band upholds a tradition of inviting others to play with them onstage - musicians who have done so include Beck, Dan Kapelovitz and Ariel Pink. Their legendary Amherst jams were known to continue for anywhere up to 15 hours at a time (although, on this tour, we'll be looking at more traditional set lengths). This is going to be the unforgettable!
http://www.jagjaguwar.com/artist.php?name=supremedicks

PLATINUM VISION is Matt Mottel from Talibam!'s new sophisticat-jazz out project. Keyboards, wailing guitar, bass and brass all spinning out a landscape for Matt's (often absurdist) slouchy blues vocal to walk out, leading you serenly through equal parts calm and chaos. All expectors of the unexpected will be primed.
http://platinumvision.bandcamp.com/

CHALAQUE aka Nick Mitchell of Manchester's Golden Lab records, will be providing some exceptionally wonky guitar noise. At first, you might think you’ve got Nick pegged as a psych guitarist with stock moves, but listen for a few minutes and you’ll suddenly wonder where the hell you are. One guitar, two amps, feedback stacked into walls and high-pitched soloing.

DIRTY BEACHES
FEMMINIELLI
PLANTAGENET 3
Monday 13 May
Bethnal Green Working Men's Club, 42 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/211298

DIRTY BEACHES is the sound of waves against a picturesque and putrid shore, the silent rumble of a Chevy as it speeds by in slow motion. Sparse but condensed, relentlessly edging forward: this is music for locomotive travel, for racing your weary motorcycle through neon archways and into tunnels at dusk. The man behind Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai; solo performer, sound-smith, and trans-Pacific nomad. Born in Taiwan, Hungtai has made Toronto, Honolulu, Montreal, and Vancouver his homes. Like Bo Didley or minimalist synth provocateurs Suicide, Dirty Beaches’ compositions are not so much stripped down as refined to their essence. Drum loops entrance, Hungtai’s croon enchants, and the yearning melodies draped overtop belie as much a sense of haunting mystery as they do romanticism and wry humour.
http://dirtybeaches.bandcamp.com/

FEMMINIELLI is Montréal producer Bernardino Femminielli, an artist whose already left a significant mark on the Canadian music scene before releasing his third album 'Double Invitation', having toured as a live member of Dirty Beaches and producing some tracks for Montreal pop-star-in-waiting Jef Barbara. But on 'Double Invititation', Femminielli has made it clear that he is possibly the best current Italo songwriter/producer in the world. Drawing equally from the camps of Moroder and Gainsbourg, his music is divided between creepy synthpop singles like "Chauffeur" and "A Que Quieres Jugar" and epic long-form dark disco. Carefully constructed down to the last detail, it sounds so authentic it's difficult to believe it isn't from the late 1970s. 'Double Invitation' is out on Desire Records.
https://soundcloud.com/femminielli

PLANTAGENET 3 like to think of their music as a misguided combination of spaghetti Western soundtracks, 1960s surf/spy-theme guitars and minimalist rock, with the end result being a bit like Young Marble Giants covering Ennio Morricone. They've released one previous single and an album, been featured by the likes of Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music, as well as blogs like This is Fake DIY and the 405, and Rough Trade who once described them as invoking "the ghost of Joe Meek and the most searching of 90s post rockisms to form something shimmering, mysterious and beguiling".

Thanks for your continued support and for reading this wayfaring missive!
One last thing before we go! If you need something brilliant to do on Sunday evening make sure you check out SUNK SEASON at Cafe Oto who have organised an awesome evening of synth sorcery and knew-age experimentalism, it's going to be the best, more here: http://www.cafeoto.co.uk/sunk-season-the-innercity-asterism-tidal.shtm

PARENTHETICAL GIRLS and SUPREME DICKS next week!!!

Whoop!
Bank Holiday looming! Thanks to everyone for coming to our BARN OWL show earlier this week, great performances all round! Loved it! Next week we have two more brilliant shows lined up for you. Monday sees us back at The Lexington this time with UTR faves PARENTHETICAL GIRLS, the tremendous ERGO PHIZMIZ and our friend Avi's new project VOLUNTEERS PARK, now that's what we call juxtaposition! All over the shop and better for it! Then, next Thursday we're overjoyed to have SUPREME DICKS grace our stage, after a brief 17 year gap, true legends of the weirdo rock underground, it's a real privilege to get to work on this ultra-rare show! Plus Matt from Talibam!'s new PLATINUM VISION band and CHALAQUE from Manchester will also be ripping it up. Read on, on, on, for all you need to know and probably more…

PARENTHETICAL GIRLS are an experimental pop band formed back in 2003 in Everett, Washington, currently living in Portland, Oregon. Throughout their bewilderingly unorthodox discography, Parenthetical Girls have become a singular force of obsessional pop. It's a peculiarity that they've learned to embrace, a single-minded conviction that pours itself over every corner of their latest album, 'Privilege' (Marriage Records / Slender Means). Returning to the band's core membership of vocalist/creative director Zac Pennington and producer/arranger Jherek Bischoff (composer and collaborator with David Byrne, Amanda Palmer, Xiu Xiu, etc), 'Privilege' retains the group's signature ambitions: visceral intimacy, camp austerity, lurid eloquence, while confidently embracing the perfect pop pastiche their previous records only alluded to. Anchored by Pennington's distinctively lilting vibrato, 'Privilege' is a cascade of grim particulars and gallows humour, an unflinching treatise on privilege, indiscretion, betrayal, sex and class politics, failure, and resignation. This is Parenthetical Girls in fighting trim: unbridled, unambiguous, and with a new creative candor that's felt in both its words and music. 'Privilege' is a 12-track statement of purpose: a bold, strikingly cohesive pop clarion call that further solidifies Parenthetical Girls' place amongst the most surprising and uncompromising pop groups at work today.

ERGO PHIZMIZ first came to critical attention for his experimental electronica and sound collage and being name checked in John Peel’s autobiography. As a composer and music conceptualist the last decade has seen him active in nearly every form of music from film scores ( including for art star Christian Marclay to Channel 4) to chamber operas, such as the increasingly cultish The Mourning Show to award winning radio commissions of all kinds for German National radio and BBC3 and 4. Most recently his music has been reaching the ears of a wider audience with his distinctive and crafted approach to song-writing which has been received to widespread critical acclaim. Never playing a song the same way twice he’s currently assembled a basic ramshackle trio to charm and blunder his way through his latest album “Eleven Songs” along with newly penned numbers.

VOLUNTEERS PARK is Aviram Cohen of Silk Flowers and Soiled Mattress & The Springs' new project. Being a chameleon is one of Cohen’s strong suits, morphing from free jazz in Soiled Mattress to cold electronics in Silk Flowers, with Volunteers Park, he’s come to a fork in the road and sent parts of himself down both paths. Certain tracks are elemental, dark and glass-shattering like a horror soundtrack, others cascade with Casio sublimity whilst lyrics about a dentist’s daughter unfurl. Cohen must have a madhouse of bleeps and bloops playing pong in his head, a multiple-aesthetic-personality-disorder, but whatever’s going on is working. He doesn’t sound spread thin, just serenely scattered. Check out PPM for his most recent 7"!
