For full details on Sunday's mind melter read on…

PENGO are a three-headed avant/drone/noise/psych hydra spawned in the toxic wasteland of Rochester New York. Considered by many the world’s most psychedelic band, Pengo tap into the long standing outsider/freak vibe that has been a constant in Rochester since the late 60's (See: Armand Schaubroeck, Lydia Lunch, Coffee and Nod.) they have been described as sounding like the following, Sun Ra, AMM, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, NNCK, Les Rallizes Dénudés and even Rema Rema on couch syrup. While Pengo is flattered by these comparisons they feel that they simply sound like Pengo. The one constant in Pengo is change, you will never see two Pengo shows that are the same.
http://blastitude.com/17/PENGO.htm

BLOOD STEREO are the duo of Dylan Nyoukis and Karen Constance from Brighton. Their music stirs broken loops up with horrified field recordings, always very minimal,  marrying ticker-tape textures and paranoiac low-level circuitry with a gradual unfolding of blunt tape work. There’s a level of restraint here that is fairly high-wire, with long passages of single-texture tension giving way to slow metallic drones and unidentifiable noise before the slowed-down vocals and gloopy FX push it into an almost Oliveros style deep listening environment. Expect the sound of empty circles, the bright concern of the moon, the weight of unnatural colour.
http://bloodstereo.bandcamp.com/

USURPER is the Edinburgh-based avant/improv act whose modus-operandi roughly translates as tiny instruments/huge fists, recording prog-length luddite epics in a large empty room. Broken instrument clunk vs. distant breathless panting.
http://duffandrobertson.bandcamp.com/

INFINITE GAAAH is the Bolides' bass master and mumblecore strange brain who rambles on and on and tears your pineal gland a new silicon wafer. Scored for sludge…Gaaah by name and nature…not nurture.
https://soundcloud.com/infinite-gaaaaah/infinite-gaaah-elevenfold

IAN MURPHY / DUNCAN HARRISON build an atmosphere  of being lost at sea in dense fog. Mystery sounds float around a miasmic swamp of swirling synthesizers and electronic gadgeting slowly building into a cacophonous crescendos climax. Tape gloop, vocal gurn and spaced hum, never sounding fresher from the sound sack.

HALO HALO, ADVANCE BASE and ILM

Hello again!
This week we released HALO HALO's brilliant self-titled debut album. Its a kaleidoscopic trip of trailing banjo, bass, drum thump and journey-bound vocals, looped into a ritual dance music, exploding with unbridled feeling! It's available in all good record stores across the globe and from our web shop (http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/) now too! Check out this video for their song 'Taro Taro Taro' for full immersion or you can see them play tomorrow at our show for ADVANCE BASE.

ADVANCE BASE is Owen Ashworth of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone's new bittersweet project. He'll be performing tomorrow night at The Lexington with Robert Stillman opening the show, live music starting from 8.30pm, tickets available on the door too. Also, if that wasn't already enough opportunity, we'll also be selling Halo Halo's brand new album, along with many other records, shirts, posters at our Upset The Rhythm stall at Spitalfield's Market this Saturday as part of the inspired Independent Label Market, bargains galore, poster ahoy! Read on for all the show details and future listings…

ADVANCE BASE is the new project by Chicago, Illinois singer songwriter, and producer, Owen Ashworth (formerly Casiotone for the Painfully Alone). 'A Shut-In’s Prayer' is Ashworth’s first full-length release in over three years, and his first under the name Advance Base. Recorded at home and in piano practice rooms at the Chicago Public Library,' A Shut-In’s Prayer' is an intimate collection of deliberately crafter but decidedly lo-fi torch songs, waltzes and ballads. Accompanying himself on his Rhodes 54 electric piano, Ashworth sings nostalgic stories about lost loves, childhood friends, estranged siblings, and hard feelings over simple drum machine rhythms and spare percussion. The additional arrangements that fill out the ten songs intertwine gentle upright piano melodies and expansive electric bass, filling the spaces between plainly-sang harmony vocals and strummed autosharp chords, with the occasional creaking floorboard or snapping reverb spring, to remind you of the cramped rooms where this album was recorded. It is a different sound than one might expect from the guy from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but Ashworth’s keen ear for melody and idiosyncratic skill as a lyricist have only improved in recent years, pushing his memorable song-writing in all new directions.  At age 35, Ashworth has a lot of music left in him, and he’s just getting started again. For his first shows in the UK as Advance Base, Owen will be performing solo, accompanying himself of electric piano & sampler.  He will perform songs from 'A Shut-In’s Prayer', 'The World Is In A Bad Fix Everywhere' EP (his tribute to gospel & outsider music pioneer Washington Phillips, out now on Orindal Records), as well previewing brand new songs from a forthcoming album.

HALO HALO are three friends living in South London, writing a primal, hyper-melodic music that makes you want to dance into the mountains and throw a rope around the moon. Rachel Horwood (vocals, banjo, also of the band Trash Kit), Jack Barraclough (vocals, drums) and Gill Partington (bass, modded-keyboard) came together just two years ago inspired by a shared love of the naturalism of folk music and the freedom of punk. Naming their band after a very colourful, refreshing hotchpotch of a dessert from the Philippines (where Rachel’s family are from) the same random delight and faith in surprise is central to their music, shot through in clattering technicolour by traditional forms of Filipino music like Tiboli and the mystical chanting and sacred percussion of the Ifugao. Halo Halo are not only reaching back to their own ancestry, but are tapping into something seemingly outside of time, parts equally magical and sonically enthralling. Halo Halo's amazing debut album will be released by Upset The Rhythm on July 8th!

ROBERT STILLMAN is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. His work lives at the intersections of Song, Sonic Arts, and History. Many of his projects reflect an awareness of process, location, and medium, and they draw upon Popular and Folk forms, most recently, American pre-jazz and rural music. As a performer, Robert tries to adapt his mode of performance to answer questions posed by the music and life. This has led to a solo style of performance in which he accompanies playing the piano with modified marching-band style percussion. Sometimes he also uses tape collage play-back as well. Archaic Future Recordings is Robert Stillman's home, focussing on the physicality of the recording by presenting products that are one-of-a-kind, handmade, and unified in their music and presentation.

THREE SHOWS THIS WEEK!!!

Morning everyone!
Thanks to all of you who came to see Lonnie Holley last week, what an incredible artist! Watching him make his countless junked sculptures throughout the evening was such a treat… and then that voice! Woah! This week sees us shifting up a gear into triple busy, with three shows coming up for you. Tomorrow sees us head to SPACE for an awesome double bill with LUCKY DRAGONS and MARY OCHER; interactive, verging on the magical electronics vs. spectral-n-spirited songcraft, it's going to be terrific! Then on Thursday in honour of the Fourth Of July we're hauling some Americans called SIC ALPS back to old England to play at The Lexington. Joining the sprawling, wild garage knees-up will be Brighton's THEO VERNEY and SHUDDER PULPS too, total fun! Our final show this week will take place at Dalston Victoria on Saturday with a special album launch party for Australian dream-punks SCOTT & CHARLENE'S WEDDING, labelmates FAWN SPOTS and FRAU will be performing too. Looking forward to it! We're also announcing today a show in November for NO JOY too, see below for all you need to know…

LUCKY DRAGONS
MARY OCHER
LONDONEARS DJs
Wednesday 3 July
SPACE, 129-131 Mare Street, Hackney, E8 3RH
8pm | £7.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/217821

LUCKY DRAGONS are a duo from Los Angeles, Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara, who create an ecstatic form of electronic music that celebrates the spirit of life as well as the magic of genre boundaries. Their music is surprising, inventive and uplifting much like their impressive live performances, which usually involve brain-wrangling visual projections and various forms of inspired audience interaction. Lucky Dragons came together in the spring of 2000 in an attempt to create a band that would never break up. The name is borrowed from a Japanese fishing vessel caught in the fallout of a US hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean that became a focal point for worldwide anti-nuclear sentiment in the 20th century. Lucky Dragons keep a busy schedule of performances having performed previously at the ICA, the 2008 Whitney Biennial, NY’s PS1, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Philadelphia Institute for Contemporary Art, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Frankfurt’s Schirn Kunsthalle, Los Angeles’ The Smell, NY’s The Kitchen, etc. Lucky Dragons have released an incredible 16 records to date, all available from their website below, including their recent mini-album 'Existers' and Teenage Teardrops 'Shape Tape". This show sees Lucky Dragons in focussed solo mode with Luke Fischbeck steering us on steady course through his ecstatic electronic sea.

MARY OCHER was born on November 10, 1986 in Moscow, Russia. Fate brought her to Tel Aviv at the tender age of 4 and to Berlin at 20. She has been playing with various media, be it words, sound, color or movement since mastering the craft of songwriting at the age of 11. Disillusioned by the mainstream music industry, she set her mind on accomplishing everything DIY. With her first band, Mary and The Baby Cheeses, that notion led to releasing 5 limited edition independent releases. The band  toured all over Europe, in the underground circles, but that wasn't enough for young Ocher, she wanted to see blood! ''War Songs" was the first label release, it came out on the Berlin based label Haute Areal in 2011, then followed a 7'' EP. Both received incredibly wonderful reviews, allowing Mary Ocher to go on tour again and bewilder audiences with her powerful performances and incredible out-of-this-world voice. In 2011, she was discovered by King Khan at a karaoke Bar in Berlin. He immediately invited her to record at his legendary Moon Studios. The album took over a year to finish but it is finally out on Buback earlier this month.

SIC ALPS
THEO VERNEY
SHUDDER PULPS
Thursday 4 July
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB
8pm | £7.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/216195

SIC ALPS are a prolific, largely unclassifiable lysergic rock and roll unit from San Francisco. Their sound is a mix of noise, pop and garage influences with a self-aware sloppiness that’s as charming as it is steeped in the history of the outer fringes of these various genre signposts, recalling the Kinks as much as Thee Oh Sees perhaps. After releasing singles and full lengths on a grand tour of American independent labels (Siltbreeze, Animal Disguise, Woodsist, Slumberland, Important and more) and making a name for themselves as a thrilling live act, the band has settled in at Chicago’s iconic Drag City, who have so far released their daunting double vinyl slab 'Napa Asylum', last year's self-titled album as well as a host of 7”s from the group. These records showcase their musical modes featuring lyrical ruminances on reincarnation, magic and schizophrenia. Tubes are hissing, cheap gear is burning brightly, so many songs reverberating in the tank. The band are currently touring Europe as a frenzied yet solid four piece in support of last month's incredible 'She's On Top' 12" EP, it's a total must hear so try and track down a copy, super peace!
http://www.sicalps.com/

THEO VERNEY is a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist hailing from Brighton. Verney has been in and out of bands over time, but now he’s making music on his own terms for the first time. Everyone of his songs was written, played, recorded and produced by the man himself. That’s not a surprise considering he’s been playing instruments his entire life, starting with violin at the young age of four. He’s influenced by bands/artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart amongst others, some of which you can hear coming through in this fuzzy and staggered monstrosity titled song 'Dead n Bones'. The track comes along with a grungy, almost bluesy sounding snarl, characterized by crunchy guitar scuzz, some brief, high-voltage soloing and Verney’s nasty scowl. Look out for Verney's EP on Italian Beach Babes out now!
http://theo-verney.bandcamp.com/

SHUDDER PULPS formed from the ashes of the oft missed Epideme - their self destructive streak finally got the better of them 3 years ago. Where Epideme’s compositional ideas frequently outstripped technical ability, Shudder Pulps’ sound offers more breadth and repetition. Their binding factor comes from a mutual love of Television and the Fall but site current bands like Cold Pumas and No Age for inspiration.

SCOTT & CHARLENE'S WEDDING
FAWN SPOTS
SOFT ARROWS
Saturday 6 July
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/217364

SCOTT & CHARLENE'S WEDDING write songs about heartbreak, working crappy jobs to survive and the loneliness of public transport because Craig Dermody knows no other way than heart-on-sleeve. Hailing from Australia but now living in New York, Dermody's debut album under the moniker Scott and Charlene's Wedding is out on Critical Heights now. 'Para Vista Social Club' (named for the Adelaide suburb in which Dermody grew up) is an off-the-cuff collection of real-life woes, each song spilling out like a soused diary entry. The album is sludgy, hypnotic and true, blending the psychedelic swagger of the Velvet Underground by way of Spacemen 3 with the underlying pop sensibility of the Go Betweens. Originally pressed up to just 200 copies with each sleeve painted by Dermody himself, these have now long since sold out, however the album will be reissued to the rest of the world by Critical Heights. The songs on 'Para Vista Social Club' are long, knotty jams, often digging into a single idea and not looking up for the next few minutes with Dermody's voice ranging from a rough moan on 'Born To Lose' and speech-like drawl on 'Every Detail' to a bummed flatness on 'Foreign Lands' and a surprisingly clean presence on the poppy 'Wiseman At The Station'. Scott & Charlene's Wedding effortlessly sprawl across the generations linking the vintage swagger of the Velvets to the off kilter pop perfection of the Only Ones by way of the Stooges and Television, like no-one before them. This show is an album release party for the band's brand new record 'Any Port in A Storm', released by Fire imminently, so be prepared for an overload of awesome!
http://scottandcharleneswedding.bandcamp.com/

FAWN SPOTS are a frenetic UK punk rock trio from York. Devotees of early Joy Divison/Warsaw, Husker Du and Rites of Spring, Fawn Spots are razor edged and lightning fast. Short blasts of hyperactive noise - thrashing guitars and rhythmic beat are kept together by bittersweet melodies. Having recently signed to Critical Heights, Fawn Spots will be releasing a split 7" with Scott & Charlene's Wedding soon.
http://fawnspots.bandcamp.com/

SOFT ARROWS are a two piece hailing from Brighton and leaning towards shoegazed surf with hints of garage punk. Their new song 'Snow Caps' has recently been released by Art Is Hard Records, as part of their postcard club series. 'Snow Caps' is full of winter melancholy that starts in quite a dreamy state before bursts of piercing guitars fill the ending of the track. The constant is the lyric ‘Sit tight with me, as the snow caps melt away’ which becomes embedded within you, lots more at this link...

"YARD PARTY is a three day music festival presented by Upset The Rhythm, taking place at Hackney Wick's tremendous and intrepid Yard Theatre. Focussing on a wide variety of international underground music from folk to noise by way of damaged romantic pop, Yard Party's intention is to haul the DIY concert out of it's expected parameters and into 'interesting pastures new' to enhance the potency of the music, its effect on the audience and to deconstruct the passive nature of what witnessing live music in 2013 shouldn't be. YARD PARTY will take place on Thursday 15 August and Friday 16 August from 5pm - midnight, and then on Saturday 17 August from noon - midnight, all-dayer style! and will take place at The Yard Theatre. The full address for the event is The Yard Theatre, Unit 2, Queen's Yard, Hackney Wick, E9 5EN"
