RODION G. A. to play in London!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

RODION G.A.
Wednesday 5 November
Café OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £10 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/288581

RODION G.A. are without doubt, one of music’s best-kept secrets. That’s despite being around for nearly forty years. The story begins when a musical visionary decided to form his own band in Romania four decades ago. It was between 1975 and 1976, when the Rodion G.A. story begins. That’s when Rodion Rosca formed the band that bore his name. This would be no ordinary band, far from it. Rodion G.A. would become one of the most innovative bands in Romanian musical history.

In 1975, Rodion joined with Gicu Farcas and Adrian Caparu to complete the lineup of Rodion G.A. By 1975, Rodion had amassed an eclectic selection of equipment and established a reputation as a D.I.Y. tech wizard. He created his own unique way of creating music on reel-to-reel tape recorders, using the various tape machines to multitrack. His nascent studio included several Tesia tape recorders, drum machines, phasers, flangers and fuzz pedals. Then there were a toy Casio VL Tone and a Soviet made Faemi organ. Like the music Rodion G.A. were making, the equipment they were using was just as leftfield and eclectic.

Sadly, Rodion G.A.‘s career lasted just over ten years. In 1987, after the death of his mother, Rodion Rosca walked away from music. For the next twenty-five years, nothing was heard of this charismatic, enigmatic and mercurial musician. Then Luca Sorin, a blogger and filmmaker became interested in the mythology that surrounds Rodion. Luca discovered a handful of tracks by Rodion and footage of their 1980 NYE concert. He posted this online. This came to the attention of Future Nuggets. They’re a collective of musicians and producers who are determined to preserve Romania’s musical heritage. Then in 2012, Rodion G.A. made their comeback, after twenty-five years away from music. Then a year later, Rodion G.A. released their debut album 'The Lost Tapes', on Strut Records to acres of praise and press attention. Since then, Rodion G.A.’s comeback has continued apace.

Earlier this year, another Rodion G.A. release hit the shops. This was none other than Rodion G.A.‘s soundtrack 'Delta Space Mission' released on Record Store Day 2014. Fans worldwide were determined to get a copy of this previously unreleased musical Magnus Opus. The lucky ones weren’t disappointed. Now Rodion G.A. have decided to embark on their first European tour and will be making their debut London performance for us at Cafe OTO on bonfire night. Suitably exciting I'm sure you'll agree and no need for any "there will be fireworks" punnery as that is a given!

"Dissident, garden shed, East-bloc space rock... Monstrous!"
Mojo Magazine

"This is some of the raddest music you’re likely to hear this year. Rad in its overall excellentness and radical as to its forward-thinking nature, sounding so even today, though recorded at the height of Ceausescu’s suppression and censorship. (...) But for now The Lost Tapes will keep you mesmerized for long into the future.
The Quietus

"A raw, hypnotic and utterly absorbing brew of distorted synth riffs and Krautrock rhythm. Rodion's music sounds fantastic today."

Friday 22 August 2014

Busy week!

Hello weekend,
Firstly, huge thanks to everyone for coming to see PROTOMARTYR this week, was a real winning show I’m sure you’ll agree, all cylinders firing. They told me it was their favourite show of the whole tour, we aim to please! Well, we’re picking up that ball and running into next week as we have four, yes four, upcoming shows lined up for you. Next Thursday we’re lucky enough to have JULIE BYRNE and HEIDI ALEXANDER both playing their debut London shows with us, with SLUSHY GUTS opening the evening of hushed-swoon, acoustic revelry. Then on Friday we pitch up at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club for an Upset The Rhythm label showcase with five incredible UK bands playing, including SILVER FOX, TRASH KIT, THE PHEROMOANS, RAVIOLI ME AWAY and DOG CHOCOLATE. Saturday finds us at Power Lunches with art-core movers/shakers SUN FOOT, MEN OH PAUSE and CODY NOON. Whilst we tie things up on Sunday with JACK OBLIVIAN, STRAIGHT ARROWS and THE SHEIKS, face-melting garage anyone? If that wasn’t enough to contend with we’re also announced this week a new show for WHITE FENCE and a new album for DEERHOOF. Deerhoof are pretty much the reason why we started Upset The Rhythm back in 2003, so eleven years later it feels like a circle is completing in the most rewarding way possible, epic grins pervade. The album is titled ‘La Isla Bonita’ and will be released on November 3rd, marking the band’s 20th anniversary! I know! You can hear their amazing new track ‘Exit Only’ and pre-order the record by clicking below, so much to communicate! Enjoy!

JULIE BYRNE
HEIDI ALEXANDER
SLUSHY GUTS
Thursday 28 August
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB

JULIE BYRNE creates elegant, deliberately wrought songs that chronicle memory, hope, and loss using finely crafted lyrics and complex fingerpicked guitar run through delay. The somber, dreamlike quality of her songs is similar to a stripped-down Grouper, or an echo-splashed Anne Briggs, with restraint and measure in her deep, unusual vocal timbre. Byrne’s voice is so delicate it sounds like she’s harmonizing with a breeze, her songs so transfixing — the sun is setting, and the magic-hour light is warm and enveloping — that those of us who’ve gathered to watch her are sitting slack-jawed. Julie's first recording for Orindal was a 7" called 'Faster Or Greener Than Now'. It was produced by Owen Ashworth & was released on December 4, 2012. Her debut album, 'Rooms With Walls and Windows' collects twelve tracks from two limited edition cassette releases, recorded between 2011 & 2012 by Jake Acosta in Chicago, IL. Each song was recorded live, with Julie accompanying herself on pastoral guitar. 'Rooms With Walls & Windows' was released on vinyl, CD & digital formats in early 2014 by Orindal. It's songs unfold from bare folk simplicity to abstracted tales of homelife and longing that conjure up a simultaneous feeling of warm-cabin intimacy and a deep interior sadness. This will be Julie's debut show in London during her first European tour.
https://soundcloud.com/juliebyrne

HEIDI ALEXANDER is the songwriter/guitarist of San Francisco's sad-pop trio The Sandwitches. She also traverses the musical landscape as Earth Girl Helen Brown and Pruno Truman and has leant her vocals to the Fresh & Onlys, Thee Oh Sees and The Intelligence. Heidi relocated from San Francisco to Los Angeles last Autumn in pursuit of a graduate fellowship in Architecture at UCLA, and since then has been working on a French language LP, 'Qu'est-ce Qui se Passe?' for Moi J'Connais Records. Heidi's songs bring that flicker of vacuum tube light to the memory cluttered space of a dark room. The reverb touches and soft string arrangements stir the definitive flagship revered Americana sound of San Francisco, where Heidi moves the sleepy sung narrative of natures across vistas of beautiful coasts to home bound, love-longing spells. Heidi will be traveling in Europe for architectural research in solar-optic structures and supporting summer releases through Southpaw and Empty Cellar.

SLUSHY GUTS aka Londoner Stephen Keane, is a hard act to categorise, who plays lo-fi 4-track songs of droll introspection laced with an acerbic wit, which is perhaps why he has been described as a cross between David Berman of Silver Jews and Chris Morris of ‘The Day Today'. With a string of limited cdr, cassette and vinyl releases under his belt, listening to Slushy Guts has been described as "like glimpsing the notebook of an experimental artist, who is never too precious to take risks with his selections,......vulnerable and contemplative, experimental and weird; classic bedroom recording from someone who understands the importance of this." http://slushyguts.bandcamp.com/

Upset The Rhythm Label Party…
SILVER FOX
TRASH KIT
THE PHEROMOANS
RAVIOLI ME AWAY
DOG CHOCOLATE
Friday 29 August
Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, 44 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB
8pm | £6 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/280254

SILVER FOX make music with no rules or preconceptions; pooling ideas and observations into songs that can be raucous, sad, reflective, powerful, wistful, or whatever they need to be. With vibrating harmonies and primal beats at their heart, their sounds and words group together in response to the lives we all live. Silver Fox are Susie Green (vocals, keyboards), Rebecca Knight (drums), Laura Lancaster (guitar, vocals), Rachel Lancaster (bass guitar, vocals). They formed in 2009 in Newcastle, and have had well-received single releases on M’Lady’s (Waves on in/Marble World) and Milk (Capital Kiss/Arosa) in 2012. Their self-titled album with Upset the Rhythm was released last November and due to broken bones this show will act as an honour record launch. Silver Fox make intuitive sounds led by a responsive, if-it-feels-good-do-it approach, giving free reign to all ideas large and small. It's been too long since they played last in London so we had to do something about it!
http://wearesilverfox.blogspot.co.uk/

TRASH KIT are a gang of flag-bearers with a wild feel for melody and a heartfelt kick inside each song. Mixing tumult, considered songcraft and overlapping harmonies in equal measure, the trio sound as joyful as they are focussed. Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray formed the band in early 2009, and since then have been lighting up London, energising the UK underground with their raw performances. Trash Kit have a sound of their very own, it's both urbane and primal, drawing on the potential of punk and the naturalism of an internal folk music. After a ruminative 2013, this year the band headed out on tour with The Ex and are presently finishing a new album for Upset The Rhythm out this Autumn.http://trashkitrules.blogspot.co.uk/

THE PHEROMOANS are a six-piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The Pheromoans write songs for the end of the queue, songs that prowl the periphery, songs that stand up on the bus and stare out through the window, blasted through with brilliant sprawling sunshine. Over the last six years the band have released a slew of records, including numerous EPs, 7"s, mini-albums and LPs through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press, Clan Destine and their own imprint Savoury Days. These recordings largely focused on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like path throughout the songs. New album, ‘Hearts Of Gold’, is the band’s sixth album proper, following on from 2012’s well received ‘Does This Guy Stack Up?’, also released by Upset The Rhythm. ‘Hearts Of Gold’ strides forward, casting its net across a diverse array of topics, including short distance holidays, ageing trendsetters, parenthood, functioning alcoholism and Hugh Laurie’s blues career. http://thepheromoans.blogspot.co.uk/

RAVIOLI ME AWAY are a dangerously ambitious and delusional all-girl jazzy, post-pop-punk, hip-funk outfit with a stylistic theme spanning all past, present and future human cultures and subcultures. Consider vintage Bananarama played with twice the sass and urgency, only reflected in the eyes of a much overworked and downright exhausted Julie Burchill on acid. Featuring members of Plug and Spin Spin The Dogs, Ravioli Me Away don’t shy away from the impeccable vocal melodies and clattersome hooks you’d expect. ‘Mic Check’ is as hypnotic as it is sparse with plaintive keyboard touches and interplaying vocals that gambol across the drum machine. ‘Cat Call’ is a triumph of questing basslines and eerie synth blushes, locked down by Sian’s charismatic choruses and Alice’s asides inbetween. After their split record on UTR with Dog Chocolate from last year the band have been working on their debut LP called 'The Inevitable Album', out soon through Good Job.
https://soundcloud.com/ravioli-me-away

DOG CHOCOLATE are an elasticated, punk quartet based on the principles of self-propulsion and having too much fun. Jono plays a couple of drums, Matthew plays a guitar and a load of pedals, Rob plays another guitar and sings selected songs whilst Andrew sings most the songs and plays impressionistic blasts of keyboard when he’s not. Having been active in a number of other bands including Yeborobo, Limn, Gasp! Cracking Eggs, Tea And Toast Band and Moulsecoomb Sword Gang, all four members are also frantic doodlers and illustrators. This over-spill of creativity can be seen on their recent split LP on UTR, entitled ‘Or’, which sees the band sprint through ten tracks of barely-controlled chaotic glee. Never dwelling for long, Dog Chocolate treat us to songs about pregnancy, poisoned eyes, public transport and cakes. Their observational, often candid lyrics match their nonsensical attitude to their music too, which tumbles and chases pitchshifted guitars through thick forests of feedback and blasting drums.

\\\\\ SATURDAY /////

SUN FOOT
MEN OH PAUSE
CODY NOON
Saturday 30 August
Power Lunches, 446 Kingsland Road, Dalston, E8 4AE

SUN FOOT are a Portland/Los Angeles trio who play low volume tunes through small amps and a drum set that consists of a hand drum, cymbal, pan lids, and electronic drum pad, all three singing, playing random cheap electronic keyboards maybe, and switching of instruments probably. Good to listen to if you are interested in the sun and tired of negativity. Sun Foot features Ron Burns (of Smog, Hot Spit Dancers, Swell), Chris Johanson (the painter, The Deep Throats, Tina Age 13) and Brian Mumford (Dragging an Ox through Water, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Thicket, Jewelry Rash) all as members. Imagine Flipper and Chuck Mangione getting together and you’re almost there.
http://sunfootrbc.neocities.org/

MEN OH PAUSE are a dark DIY punk outfit from the darker recesses of the Sussex countryside. Featuring Jacindy Cartland from 'King Alfred, Man Of Leisure', Maureen Bourne from 'Leopard Leg' and Flo Brooks from 'Chaps'. Their debut EP, 'Pulse Check', was recorded in Lewes in winter 2013/14. The EP features four slices of claustrophobic, anxiety-strewn, lo-fi DIY punk, pressed in a run of 250 on black vinyl with download code included, Tuff Enuff Records, check it!
https://www.facebook.com/pages/MEN-OH-PAUSE/555328167848700

CODY NOON are Charlie Butler and Suzy Antoniw. They are a stripped-down two piece beat combo from London, who play instrumental, minimal yet atmospheric droning mazes of sound to varying degrees of proficiency.

\\\\\ SUNDAY /////

JACK OBLIVIAN
STRAIGHT ARROWS
THE SHEIKS
Sunday 31 August
Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, 44 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB

JACK OBLIVIAN, depending on whom you ask, is either a rock legend or an absolute unknown. This dichotomy is well-understood by Memphis musicians, as underground "fame," for all its rewards, has, with a few exceptions, been the ceiling for local acts for decades. And no one knows this dichotomy better than Jack 'Oblivian' Yarber, who may be Memphis' most influential active rock musician. The list of noteworthy bands Yarber has been a member of over the years is massive and includes Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves (a high school punk project that also featured future Squirrel Nut Zipper Jimbo Mathus), new-wavers the End, '68 Comeback, Knaughty Knights, and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Two of Yarber's former bands — the Compulsive Gamblers and the Oblivians — have seen their reputation and following swell in the decade since their demise, especially the Oblivians, whose international fan base borders on rabid. Due largely to his stint in these bands, both partnerships with Greg Cartwright, now of the Reigning Sound, Yarber has been an acknowledged influence on artists such as the White Stripes and Jay Reatard. In the years since, Yarber has toured and released a string of successful solo albums as Jack Oblivian, on a range of labels including Fat Possum and Sympathy For The Record Industry.
https://soundcloud.com/jackoblivian

STRAIGHT ARROWS started out with Owen Penglis yelling about getting dumped and kicked out of bands into a four track cassette machine in his bedroom, soon to be joined by Alex Grigg, Angela Bermuda, and Adam Williams, all friends with coloured musical pasts. Slowly the four honed their reverb-laden, catchy, fuzzed out punk garage into something barely listenable and less antisocial. Unable to actually get any shows, Straight Arrows started putting on their own at the notorious (and now abandoned) Newtown Hotel, culminating in the release of their first 7" record ‘Something Happens/Can’t Count’ on their newly formed label Juvenile Records. Forward two years and Straight Arrows are no longer kids, now with a host of 7"s and a debut LP under their belt, tours and shows with amongst others Thee Oh Sees, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The Black Lips, the band come forth with their astonishing new album 'Rising', through Agitated.
http://straightarrows.bandcamp.com/

THE SHEIKS are touring with Jack Oblivian during this epic Euro tour. Bringing that Memphis rock'n'roll swagger to their distinct brand of garage-y psychedelia, the band's debut, self-released album, 'Witches and Mystics', blends howling vocals and explosive drumming with reverbed-to-hell guitars that are drenched in filthy distortion.

Deerhoof!

OK then! Almost 11 years ago we put on our first show by a band named DEERHOOF, now we're releasing their new album! It's also their 20th anniversary! LA ISLA BONITA will come out on November 3rd, here's the tracklisting:

01 Paradise Girls
02 Mirror Monster
03 Doom
04 Last Fad
05 Tiny Bubbles
06 Exit Only
07 Big House Waltz
08 God 2
09 Black Pitch
10 Oh Bummer

Serious dream come true territory!!!
Here's the pre-order link: http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/

And some music! 'Exit Only' is the first track to air.

"No band is an island. Felt like one sometimes, in those budgetless and obscure early days, Satomi and me locked in the basement trying to figure out how our clashing personalities and ideas could turn into a band. If we hadn't had that crazed mid-90s Bay Area punk scene to call home, I doubt we'd still be here to chat about a 20th anniversary." - Greg Saunier

In many ways Deerhoof hasn't changed. Their new record La Isla Bonita was recorded in guitarist Ed Rodriguez's basement. Situated next to a parking garage, it was perfect for making noise till the wee hours. They recorded live, DIY style, "a weeklong sleepover arguing over whether to try and sound like Joan Jett or Janet Jackson, cracking each other up, one guitarist whose name starts with J always putting too much red chile into the rations," says Greg. But more than that La Isla Bonita is about the eclectic worldwide community that has supported them.

To co-produce the record they tapped former journalist-turned-label owner and producer Nick Sylvester, one of first writers to have an eloquent take on Deerhoof's harsh and erratic sound. You'll hear them pay musical tributes to their improbable list of heroes-turned-fans: David Bowie, Ric Ocasek, The Roots, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Beck. Of course their intent is never reverence, but provocation. They are always on the hunt for that perfect union of the hilarious and the terrifying that one hears in other bands of their generation like Bikini Kill and Lightning Bolt. 2014 has been a killer year for young, aggressive female-fronted bands (St. Vincent, Tune-Yards, Perfect Pussy, Karen O, Speedy Ortiz) and La Isla Bonita is also partly a discourse with them.

The record is an exercise in duality, alternating between minimalism and bombast, melody and dissonance, and dynamism and tranquility. This all builds to a greater dual theme throughout the album between gloom and joy invoking the feeling of standing at the edge of the precipice and dancing your way off. "We don't set out to create masterpieces. The Deerhoof fan is a thrill-seeker. This is the latest volley in an ongoing conversation we've been honored to hold for 20 years," says Greg.

Protomartyr tomorrow

Morning all!
Now that our summer has walked into a chillier room we’re following suit with some bracing, acceleratory post punk tomorrow night with PROTOMARTYR, SAUNA YOUTH and FEATURE. The Lexington will be our haunt of choice, expect it to be swept just like a new broom by some genuinely refreshing music from 8.30pm onwards. We only have handful of tickets remaining (think 11) so be advised to buy one in advance if you wish to attend. Read on for all you need to know and check our listings for a second Mississippi Records film/talk/showcase that we’ve newly announced…

\\\\\ TOMORROW /////

PROTOMARTYR
SAUNA YOUTH
FEATURE
Tuesday 19 August
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB

PROTOMARTYR play a taut, austere rock that's been incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed occasionally by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but off-kilter. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn’t the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges’ greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is “stuck between the cracks.” If that’s the case, though, they aren’t alone. Protomartyr’s economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Casey’s dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates (guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson) the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section. In other words, to “fuck around a little bit more.” This is never more apparent than on the band’s excellent sophomore LP on Hardly Art, 'Under Color of Official Right'. Where 2012’s 'No Passion All Technique' favoured comparatively straightforward punk structures, 'Under Color' takes a more exploratory approach and has led to the band coming on tour to Europe for the first time to show us how weird it can get.
https://soundcloud.com/protomartyr

SAUNA YOUTH are an evolving band of young future humans making truly irregular punk not quite comparable to anything else. The band, attracted to the possibilities apparent within a DIY philosophy have been self-recording and self-releasing their own music since 2010, creating a number of seven inches, splits and cassettes. Artistic affinities are pledged to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Pissed Jeans and The Intelligence, but as Kurt Cobain once asked "Why can't we be both Black Sabbath and The Beatles?", Sauna Youth consistently and urgently pose the question, 'Why can't we be both The Ramones and Steve Reich?'. Sauna Youth's debut album, 'Dreamlands' was released in 2012 through Gringo Records and Faux Discx, whilst their most recent 7" 'False Jesii Pt. II' came out last year through Static Shock Records, new album coming soon!http://lostinidea.blogspot.co.uk/

FEATURE are a melodic drone-punk trio from London. They recently released an EP entitled 'Culture of the Copy' on Tye Die Tapes, via cassette and digital download. 'Culture of the Copy' was recorded by Jen and Liv while still a two-piece at Tye Die Tapes HQ in Sheffield in February this year, and features three new songs plus a cover of Supergrass’s pop-hit ‘Caught By The Fuzz’. With Jen also being in Sauna Youth, Feature recently became somewhat of a supergroup when Heather of punk-slackers Slowcoaches joined the band in March of this year.
