Upcoming shows for Vice Cooler, Mums, I Know I'm An Alien, Nap Eyes and the Ravioli Me Away LP launch!

Hello everyone!
Thanks for coming out this week to see Marisa Anderson and Sick Llama / Thurston Moore, two fantastic shows I hope you agree! We’re back in live mode next Monday for Halloween at the Sebright Arms. We have spooked goth-pop from Vice Cooler planned, making his solo European debut no less! Mums will be coming down from Widnes to play their first show in London in ages, they are megalithic as in rocking large! Plus I Know I’m An Alien will be channeling music from the outer rim of another solar system for your pleasure too! Tickets are £6 and live music will commence from around 8.30pm, more below for the thorough people out there! You’ll also find our full listing for our upcoming Nap Eyes, Robert Sotelo and Lads show that is fast approaching at The Lexington on Monday 7 November. Can’t wait for that solid lineup!

Also next week, Ravioli Me Away will be celebrating their imminent new album release on a boat on the Thames. It sounds fantastic, here’s the poster for the free party, expect sets from RMA, Static Palm and Design A Wave (probably some tidal waves from the river too) and DJs galore. Next Thursday is the date for your diaries! Bring your sea legs!

Monday 31 October

VICE COOLER is an American musician, music video director, and photographer. He has been recognised by people as disparate as High Places and Henry Rollins as an “inspiration”. He has collaborated with Peaches on many of her ventures, prompting her to crown him as the ‘world’s greatest performer’. Cooler started performing music live in 1998 with the highly influential noise rock band XBXRX. His energetic solo project Hawnay Troof was active for the first decade of 2000s until he started performing as Vice Cooler. Vice also drummed for the band KIT (on Upset The Rhythm) and has also guested as live drummer for Chicks On Speed and The Raincoats. This show will be his European debut performance as Vice Cooler on his favourite night of the year… Halloween! Look out for some hot and heavy electro pop that would fit in perfectly at either the grimiest after-hours basement party or the top of the pop charts.

MUMS are the most intimidating and feral rock force ever to hail from Widnes, dealing in a fearsome demolition derby of Melvins-style riff worship, balls-to-the-wall rock ballast and an omnipresent sense of humour. No gobs remain unsmacked when this power trio are in the area.

I KNOW I’M AN ALIEN is music made by an incarnated alien from a 5th dimensional star realm. Aware of the trappings of 3D reality, the artist utilises unconventional guitar sounds and vocals to express his awkwardness when faced with violence, greed, love for technology over living beings, war and just the plain zombie-like behaviour of his fellows. He uses these sonic tools to also invite the willing listener to surrender and join in on embarking on a journey of creating a momentary alternative reality together. Musicians and artists are today's wizards, shamans and magicians.

NAP EYES
ROBERT SOTELO
LADS
Monday 7 November
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Road, Islington, N1 9JB

NAP EYES hail from Nova Scotia and make crooked, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs, their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth's magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia and drinking too much. In the world of Nap Eyes, workaday details punctuate (and puncture) cosmic concerns, as songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitarist Nigel Chapman wrestles with air and angels, struggling (and often failing) to reconcile the Romantic rifts, both real and imagined, that define our lives: between chaos and order; solipsism and fellowship; the anxiety of social (dis)orders both big and small; and the various intersections and oppositions of religion, art, and science. It's the sound of being young and alive in the city, a tenuous and impermanent counterpoise of recklessness and anxiety, archness and earnestness. Following last year's reissue of their 2014 debut 'Whine of the Mystic' on Paradise of Bachelors, Nap Eyes released an album of all-new material entitled 'Thought Rock Fish Scale' earlier this year.

ROBERT SOTELO will make his live debut at this show, interpreting songs honed for hisceventual long-player entitled ‘Cusp’. Sotelo intends to channel ‘Ram’-era McCartney without the chops, at once intimate and ambitiously layered pop music garnished in naive sincerity. Attempting to push beyond limited means, towards the absurd and abundant idea that recreating the feel and sound of The Beatles remains paramount an objective, the entire project rests on the uncertainty and confusion of mid-thirties existentialism and the exploration of the individual post-social life. Accompanied by a host of friends this initial performance will use the recorded compositions as a template on which Sotelo may attempt to draw out and utilise the individual merits of each musician to reconfigure and sensualise the jams, with currently unknowable results.

LADS are Sophie, her boyfriend, Arj; her brother, Henry; and his best friend, Wayne. They play noisy pop that generally lasts 2:30.

Thanks so much for reading, catch you on Monday!

Upcoming shows for Marisa Anderson, Laura Cannell, Sick Llama & Thurston Moore, Porest and Vice Cooler!

Good morning everyone!

Over the next seven days we have three, count them, THREE amazing shows planned for you! Tomorrow we are teaming up with our friends at Caught by the River to host a very special meeting of minds at The Forge in Camden. Touring together all across the UK, Marisa Anderson and Laura Cannell are both very unique artists and we’re lucky to have them back. Cannell is a shamen with her otherworldly improvised fiddle and evocative echoes of recorder. Whilst Anderson (who last played for us as part of our Mississippi Records nights two years ago) is a vigilant, deft guitarist, conjuring much new life from the country blues lexicon and on her most recent album Into The Light soundtracking a hazy spell of sound to accompany an imagined existential Western. In short it’s going to be exceedingly blissful, Stephen Cracknell (of the Memory Band) will be DJing too and we will have tickets on the door from 7pm!

Then this Wednesday, Upset The Rhythm are heading to The Islington for the first time in Angel for a show debuting Sick Llama and Thurston Moore’s new collaboration. Amps look set to be fried and fizz, whilst audio-revisionist Porest will open the show with his debut London performance too. There’s still time to adjust your cruising altitude and attend the show, advance tickets are advised, link below!

Then finally, one week today, actually on Halloween no less! We have Vice Cooler, Mums, I Know I’m An Alien and Trash Kit DJs all keeping us entertained at the Sebright Arms. If you like to listen to goth-pop, extraterrestrial sonics or feral heaviness throughout your typical All Hallow’s Evening, then this is the night for you to don cape and fangs and rock out with us.

Full details of all three shows can be read in full below, plus our listing section concludes this missive with news of our upcoming shows for Ravioli Me Away, Nap Eyes, Happy Meals, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Shopping, Negative Scanner, Horse Lords, Tim Presley and Kristin Hersh! If that wasn’t  enough, last week we also announced our final show of 2016, an Upset The Rhythm Xmas Party with Rattle, Ravioli Me Away, Apostille, Guttersnipe and Blood Sport all performing on December 17th at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, beyond exciting times! Read on for everything and more…

In collaboration with Caught by the River…

MARISA ANDERSON
LAURA CANNELL
STEPHEN CRACKNELL (DJ Set)
Tuesday 25 October
The Forge, 3-7 Delancey Street, Camden, NW1 7NL

MARISA ANDERSON channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music. Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music. On her newest release, ‘Into the Light’ (2016), Anderson leaves Appalachia and the Delta blues behind as she journeys west, into the heart of the sun. Written as the soundtrack to an imaginary science-fiction western film, the record’s ten songs trace the story of a visitor lost and wandering on the shifting borderlands of the Sonoran desert. ‘Into the Light’ is shimmering and cinematic, the pieces built around pedal steel, lap steel and electric piano as well as Anderson’s signature guitar sound.

Originally from Northern California, Anderson dropped out of college at age nineteen to walk across the US and eventually landed in Portland, Oregon, where she currently lives. Classically trained, she honed her skills playing in country, jazz and circus bands. In 2009 she released her first solo gutiar recrod, ‘The Golden Hour’ followed by ‘Mercury'(2011) and ‘Traditional and Public Domain Songs'(2013). More recently, she has been in demand as a collaborator and composer, contributing to recordings by Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux among others, and creating music for short films.

LAURA CANNELL is based in rural East Anglia, allowing her work to draw on the emotional influences of the landscape and the sometimes dissonant chords of early and medieval music. With deconstructed bow and the extraordinary sound of double recorder, Laura’s music has grown out of unearthed fragments that became improvised pieces. Her music encompasses both wild animal calls and long forgotten liturgical fragments, which drawn through Laura’s music seem to originate from the same, ahistorical place. With a background in traditional folk, early and experimental music, she creates a solitary minimalist chamber music, where one player makes all the harmonies. Her third album ‘Simultaneous Flight Movement’, released this month, was recorded live in one take inside a Southwold Lighthouse in Suffolk and is a collection of semi-composed semi-improvised pieces from the edge of England which seek to dissolve borders, move away from formal structure and to re-imagine a sonic landscape unrestricted by time or origin. This follows her two acclaimed records ‘Quick Sparrows over the Black Earth’ (2014) and ‘Beneath Swooping Talons’ (2015).

Laura has established herself as a versatile live performer with a unique ability to conjure up transcendental and otherworldly atmospherics in all kinds of contexts. She is also a frequent collaborator with the likes of Richard Dawson, Rhodri Davis, Charles Haywood and Mark Fell.

SICK LLAMA & THURSTON MOORE
POREST
Wednesday 26 October
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, N1 0XT

SICK LLAMA is the solo noise/drone project from the man behind Michigan-based label Fag Tapes, Heath Moerland. He holds the rotten essence of Midwest Basement Mystery Mind Sound inside the marrow of his weird skull, right behind the strawberry blond tuffs, unblinking bug eyes, and mildewed skin. Sick Llama writes imaginary music for your imagination, walking a fine line between composition and improvisation. It's a wall of your own dreams to contend with, a tunnel with no light at the end, a wrong turn down the right road. This show seems him team up with good friend THURSTON MOORE to wrangle out a truly unique duo set!
http://fagtapes.bandcamp.com/

POREST (aka Mark Gergis) across decades has issued a trail of confounding agitprop sound art, post-globalized hate-pop, diabolical radio dramas and carefully rearranged realities on the Abduction, Seeland, Resipiscent and Nashazphone labels. Porest’s blatant embezzlement of human syntax and cultural misunderstanding broadcasts vital mixed messages. Collaborations have included: Aavikko (Finland) Alan Bishop/Sun City Girls (USA), and Negativland (USA) among others. Gergis was a co-founder of the long-running experimental Bay Area music and performance collective Mono Pause – as well as its offshoot Neung Phak, performing inspired renditions of southeast Asian musics. Since 2003, with the Sublime Frequencies label, an ethnographic music and film collective out of Seattle, Washington – and more recently, with his own record label – Sham Palace, Gergis has shared decades of research and scores of archived international music, film footage and sound recordings acquired during extensive travels in the Middle East, South East Asia and elsewhere.
