Mésange - London show announced for Feb 7th!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

MÉSANGE
Thursday 7 February
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT

7.30pm | £7 | https://link.dice.fm/mesange-the-islington

MÉSANGE is a collaboration between composer/violinist Agathe Max and composer/ musician Luke Mawdsley. Their new album, Gypsy Moth, anticipates the forces of nature, creation and rebirth. Mordant musical tapestries (minimalism, drone and ambient) are washed in dense electric skies, exposing signs that flutter and flare in dark elegance. Ubiquitous modal loops, inspire tension and mystery, a golden harvest where forbidden fruits are gathered by furtive hands mindful of a coming storm. Mésange implore you to explore the threshold between dawn and dusk, self and other, where unfettered territories are sensually intimated in fecund sounds that teeter between lightning and thunderclap. The duo have travelled and toured extensively across the U.K and Europe and have been invited to perform with the acclaimed minimalist composer Terry Riley. Their performances are often improvised and unrestricted by the usual constraints of musical reception, celebrating a queering of gender, the body and identity both visually and sonically.

As a graduate in electro-acoustic composition, Agathe Max has worked within a range of indistinct disciplines including, sound design for experimental film, theatre, contemporary dance and other visual art forms. Agathe uses improvisation to explore a dark(er) materiality rooted in ritual, myth and the supernatural. Agathe Max’s latest recording A Gypsy in a Church (2016) is a daring 22 minute acoustic improvisation, weaving post-classical motifs into a beguiling and hypnotic tapestry that utters speculations on sacred identity and heritage. Other creative actions have included the OFIELD project, processing and forging environmental soundscapes for an imagined utopia/dystopia. Luke Mawdsley is a musician and composer, solo artist, collaborator and guitarist in Cavalier Song. His work meditates on the human condition, stirring memory and desire within musical definitions of a terrific sublime. The results are a series of lush, yet darkly affective, symphonic abstractions weaving in and around melancholic myths and narratives. Luke is currently the lead guitarist in Mugstar and a former member of Liverpool avant-garde group a.P.A.t.T. He has received commissions from The Blue Coat, FACT , Static Gallery and Edge Hill Arts Centre, providing an ongoing portfolio of improvised and soundtrack works.

AMOR - London show announced for February!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

AMOR
Friday 1 February
New River Studios, 199 Eade Rd, Harringay Warehouse District, London, N4 1DN
7.30pm | £7 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/456624

AMOR is a new quartet based largely in Glasgow, consisting of Richard Youngs, Luke Fowler, Michael Francis Duch and Paul Thomson. AMOR is master-class in blissful, searching, avant-disco fuelled by telepathic ensemble playing and an untouchable, higher joy. Though a young grouping, AMOR’s members have separate exceptional histories in modern music. Richard Youngs has a 140+ long discography covering any number of musics often invented by Youngs himself, while Luke Fowler is an award winning film-maker and visual artist, as well as an electronic musician in his own right. Paul Thomson is a drummer and percussionist with Franz Ferdinand and The Yummy Fur and Michael Francis Duch is a double bassist based in Norway with deep roots in the world of improvisation and minimalist composition. Most important, however, is that AMOR is the sound of a band, as one.

Collectively, AMOR strike a balance between hefty, bass-thick kicks and crisp percussion, an elastic double bass that lends bounce and class to the groove and floating piano chords recalling a warped take on Philadelphia International Records or a version of Can decimating the disco charts of late 70s USA. Steeped in de-constructivist disco practices similar to Arthur Russell yet fully immersed in a higher love, never forsaking movement and joy for ego, AMOR’s embrace of the avant garde and the simplicity of feeling brings forth light. While at times the focal point, Richard Youngs’ vocals are immeshed in the mix, a plaintive, cosmic call and response with the outside. AMOR’s debut album, titled ‘Sinking Into A Miracle’, is due out this December via Night School Records, who also released the group’s previous couple of glorious EPs.

Mary Lattimore, Hen Ogledd and Eric Chenaux in London!

Hello there!

Just a quick reminder of our upcoming London shows. This Monday we’re very pleased to invite sublime, harpist Mary Lattimore to play The Lexington. Lattimore’s world of sound is built from intricate layers of plucked strings, gauzy effects and atmospheric gesture. We’ve been fans of her music for a while now so it’s a real pleasure to host her on the last night of her European tour.

We’re also very happy to have Lucinda Chua opening the show with her expansive, spell-spinning cello-work too. Now that sounds just the ticket! Not that we have many of those left though, well worth buying one in advance.

Then our next show sees us slide fully into the festive season! On Friday 30th November there’s only one place to be… The Courtyard Theatre. We have some mytho-techno future pop in the beguiling shape of Hen Ogledd (Sally Pilkington, Dawn Bothwell, Rhodri Davies, Richard Dawson) booked in. Celebrating the release of their exquisite new record, ‘Mogic’, this rare concert from the quartet of tiny-witch botherers, will also feature live performances from Bamboo and the Tower Ravens, an all-female rapper sword dance team.

Ticket sales for this one are brisk too, so you know what to do. Going to be a memorable night, that’s for sure!

Read on below for a more in-depth look at both of those crucial events, along with the full listing for December 5th’s select show with off-centre, balladeers Eric Chenaux and Robert Sotelo too.

We also announced new concerts for The Stallion (Ben and Alastair from The Country Teasers / Rebel with their dark interpolations into Pink Floyd) and the riotous David Nance Group this week too, both on sale in our listings section… now!

MARY LATTIMORE
LUCINDA CHUA
Monday 19 November
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, London, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £8 | TICKETS

MARY LATTIMORE is a harpist living in Los Angeles. She experiments with her Lyon and Healy Concert Grand harp and effects. Memories - places, vacancies, allusions - are fundamental characters in Mary Lattimore's evocative craft. Inside her music, wordless narratives, indefinite travelogues, and braided events skew into something enchantingly new. Lattimore recorded her breakout 2016 album, 'At The Dam', during stops along a road trip across America, letting the serene landscapes of Joshua Tree and Marfa, Texas color her compositions. In 2017, she presented 'Collected Pieces', a tape compiling sounds from her past life in Philadelphia: odes to the east coast, burning motels, and beach town convenience stores. In 2018, from a restorative station - a redwood barn, nestled in the hills above San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge - emanates 'Hundreds of Days', her second full-length LP with Ghostly International. The record sojourns between silences and speech, between microcosmic daily scenes and macrocosmic universal understandings, between being alien in promising new places and feeling torn from old native havens. It's an expansive new chapter in Lattimore's story, and an expression of mystified gratitude. A study in how ordinary components helix together to create an extraordinary world.

Throughout the shifting locales there is one consistent companion Lattimore engages: a 47-string Lyon and Healy harp. The instrument wires directly into her psyche. Pitchfork's Marc Masters posits, "she can practically talk through it at this point; she's created a language." Lattimore's voice sweeps beneath the plucks and washes of opener "It Feels Like Floating," enraptured by the winding current, and reappearing in the second minute of the immense "Never Saw Him Again." The track elevates towards a shimmering apex of static and percussion before organ drone yields to signature halcyon flutters. As with much of Lattimore's work, the track titles are telling; "Baltic Birch" is a somber windswept march that sways gracefully out of step, a remembrance of a recent trip to Latvia where she was struck by the abandoned resort towns along the Baltic Sea. "Hello From The Edge of The Earth" is an earnest reflection of Lattimore's love of the natural world, recognising the thresholds of varying terrains. 'Hundreds Of Days' is out now on Ghostly International. Mary also writes harp parts for songs and recordings, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird, Thurston Moore, Sharon Van Etten, Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, Ed Askew and Fursaxa.

LUCINDA CHUA is a London-based singer-songwriter whose had a very productive year. The gifted cellist was a member of FKA Twigs’ live band, composed a Tchaikovsky-inspired score for a Russian fashion documentary, and has fostered a wide-ranging community of collaborators from her city’s diverse indie scene—among them Westerman, Ben Vince, and Laura Misch. These wildly different projects show the breadth of the artist’s interests, unified by Chua’s subtle chamber pop touch. Chua’s mode isn’t vigor: her songs are understated and somber, the energy so subdued it’s practically somnolent. Chua used to tour long ago with Stars of the Lid, and indeed that ambient band’s mournful, super-delicate style offers a clear idea of how Chua approaches her music, she was also a member of Felix on kranky records too. There is an unflappable calm present in all of Chua’s work, and on the quiet and intensely-felt recent single, ‘Somebody Who’, she is breaking out on her own.

HEN OGLEDD
BAMBOO
TOWER RAVENS RAPPER
Friday 30 November
The Courtyard Theatre, 40 Pitfield Street, Shoreditch, N1 6EU
7.30pm | £12 | TICKETS

HEN OGLEDD is a project founded by Richard Dawson and harpist, Rhodri Davies, with the addition of Dawn Bothwell and Sally Pilkington. The name of the group is a reference from the Welsh for The Old North. Each hailing from historically different tribal regions of the Old North, the musicians in Hen Ogledd challenge the idea that the ancient world was rife with magic, while the new is infiltrated by cold logic. This has led to the band’s new album for Weird World, ‘Mogic’, being created. This third record from the group is a phantasmal blend of images and ideas that draw upon the mystical and technological. ‘Mogic’ is a discombobulating pop prayer exploring artificial intelligence, witches, nanotechnology, pre-medieval history, robots, romance, computer games and waterfalls. This dynamic album of eddies and swirls, ravishing melodies, hallucinatory textures and rapid rhythms is pinned down by some deft performances: Pilkinton’s picture-perfect pop and earthy singing, Davies’ blazing harp splutterations and guitar moans, Bothwell's twisted telephone techno and bamboozling lyric-bombs and Dawson's utter bass. No small mention must go to special guest Will Guthrie, one of the finest and classiest drummers there is, who's all over this record like long grass on dunes. ‘Mogic’ is released on November 16th and supported by a short tour of the UK of which, this show is the London date!
https://youtu.be/5O9BXeFm_yg

BAMBOO is the majestic pop project of Nick Carlisle and Rachel Horwood. Their music is vivid and deeply poignant, locking into a magnetic pull between Rachel's flawlessly resonant folk cadence and Nick's pristine synth pop production. Bamboo’s second studio album, The Dragon Flies Away, was released last year on Upset The Rhythm. The Dragon Flies Away tells a story loosely associated with the Hannya demon mask of Noh theatre plays such as Dojoji, and reflects the range of emotion the Hannya mask is capable of displaying: obsession, jealousy, sorrow and rage. The album presents its story in two acts and is presented with a gatefold sleeve and lyric / artwork sheet. Horwood’s evocative paintings are given centre stage with the packaging, allowing the album's story to grow beyond sound, making the journey all the more immersive. Bamboo are currently a live quartet and have just finished off their new record, ‘Daughters of the Sky’, look out 2019!

TOWER RAVENS are an all female rapper dance team based in central London. They take their name from the feathered guardians of the Tower of London, and are accompanied by a brazen Beefeater. They dance out in the city on a monthly tour of favourable pubs, and attend events and festivals throughout the year. Rapper sword dancing is a form of traditional dance which comes from the north east of England. The “swords” (inch wide strips of metal with a handle at each end) are used to make intricate locks and patterns whilst the dancers perform precise and neat stepping combined with fast and exciting movements.

ERIC CHENAUX
ROBERT SOTELO
Wednesday 5 December
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £10 | TICKETS

ERIC CHENAUX makes conceptual music that’s not meant to sound conceptual. He operates among various ‘traditions’ but perhaps most broadly, Chenaux’s records grapple with the relationship between improvisation and structure in very particular, unique, idiosyncratic ways – and quite without irony or cynicism, through love. Because fundamentally, Chenaux writes love songs, which he sings in a voice honeyed and clear, while his guitar gently bends, frazzes, chortles, diverges and decomposes. This juxtaposition of his mellow, dexterous crooning and his highly experimental (and equally dexterous) guitar explorations, explodes even unconventional notions of singing and accompaniment, of tonal and timbral interplay between guitar and voice.

As a solo artist, Chenaux’s improvisation methods are in certain literal ways solipsistic: as a singer-songwriter, he plays his guitar around and against his voice, challenging easy notions of harmony/harmoniousness, improvising ‘with himself’ in pursuit of surprising himself (and his listeners) as he unfurls ribbons of voice and instrument often to the point of seeming independence, all the better to capture – and be captured by – unforeseen, intimate moments of interdependence: a definition of freedom, as a profoundly intentional state of openness, presence and play. Even within avant-garde currents of folk and jazz balladry, Eric Chenaux feels like an outlier. Yet his music remains wonderfully warm, generous and fundamentally accessible in spite of its irrefutable iconoclasm. While the constitutive elements of Chenaux’s solo work in recent years might suggest some underlying devotion to asceticism, the opposite is much more true: his musical reveries resist, critique and counteract austerity (in all its forms) in a joyful abandonment to the improvised space where playfulness and light-heartedness are taken seriously, and where love is invoked and expressed, without reductive or facile sentimentalism, in a full, nuanced, clear-eyed suspension/rejection of the cynical life.

Slowly Paradise (on Constellation Records) is Eric Chenaux’s most recent solo record – a lovely collection of mostly long songs guided by soothing, buttery singing and bent, fried fretwork. It is arguably Chenaux’s most assured and essential solo work, expanding upon the critical acclaim his previous releases Guitar & Voice and Skullsplitter have rightly garnered.

ROBERT SOTELO is the nom de plume of Andrew Doig, a 36 year old serial musician originally from Peterborough, UK. Andrew's middle name is Robert, whilst Sotelo is his mother's maiden name. Sotelo's verdant world of sound is at once intimate, choosing to build songs up from ambitious layers of instrumentation into miniature psych pop overtures of genuine sincerity of feeling. Very much grounded in that particular forward-facing strain of mid-60s rock that edged towards psych, Sotelo's music owes as much to Davies and McCartney's unashamed belief in melody as it does to the uncertainty and confusion that comes with mid-thirties existentialism. Debut album ‘Cusp' (Upset The Rhythm) was an album that explored the individual in a post-social life era, with Sotelo starting the project initially as an attempt to re-engage with the people he used to know, without relying on nostalgia as a common bond. From this worthy spark of a plan, he's created something grand and compelling, a vast tapestry of songs that stand up and sound afresh. Check out his exquisite recent cassette ‘Botanical’ on Nicey Music too.

THE STALLION: ‘THE DARK SIDE OF THE WALL’ TRIPLE ALBUM LAUNCH!
Friday 18 January

Moth Club, Old Trades Hall, Valette St, Hackney Central, London, E9 6NU

7.30pm | £7 | https://link.dice.fm/the-stallion-moth-club

THE STALLION can’t believe it’s happening at last. Put the date in your diaries, Elves, before you drop them into all the children's stockings all along the fireplace or at the foot of their beds. Ssshhh! Don't wake them up! They are having nightmares about being made into sausage meat! They have no noses, and instead of eyes and mouths, large dark holes! Clutching their homework they shuffle along the conveyor belt towards the meat grinders and so into the sausage meat buckets. Yum! School sausages! Who can forget the Grange Hill theme song and animated credits roll? NO LESS ICONIC is The Stallion's six-sided LP for In The Red entitled ‘The Dark Side Of The Wall’. That's a hexagonal performance ("cover" is too weak, and "homage" to reverent) of Pink Floyd's The Wall, which is known on the street as ‘The Dark Side Of The Wall’. Country Teasers survivalists Alastair Mackinven and Ben Wallers are The Stallion and they will be performing ‘THE DARK SIDE OF THE WALL’, including film projections, on Friday January 18th 2019 at The Moth Club, in the Hackney Central area. The films were shot in LoganBerry Finite Quilt on the PC4 MacPro WorkBook. I am only a Sinclair c5 on the Zx spectrum, do you like talk like that? Do you like to do bad things? Are u a bad person?

David Nance is coming to London next March!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

DAVID NANCE GROUP
Monday 25 March
The Shacklewell Arms, 71 Shacklewell Lane, Dalston, London, E8 2EB
7.30pm | £7 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/455576

DAVID NANCE is nothing if not prolific. Over the course of the past six years, the Omaha, NE musician has released three full-length albums for labels Grapefruit and Ba Da Bing, a 7-inch, numerous cassettes, CDRs and unlicensed “cover albums” of artists like Lou Reed, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Doug Sahm. His latest full-length is credited to the ‘David Nance Group’ and features Nance alongside  his recent hot live band of fellow Omaha  musicians; guitarist Jim Schroeder, bassist Tom May and drummer Kevin Donahue. Appropriately, the new album is called ‘Peaced and Slightly Pulverized’ as the sounds therein are alternatingly tender & brusque. Nance has an enviable way of conveying intensity and pathos in his music without necessarily  resorting to clicking on a distortion pedal, instead relying on the build-up and tension from the interplay of his bandmates with his cracked, impassioned wail. There’s also plenty of fuzz and distortion too, from the anthemic ‘Poison’ with its fuzzed-out guitar riff that leans into a Crazy-Horsian guitar maelstrom and white-hot solo, to ‘Ham Sandwich’; a blisteringly frantic rant about a lunchtime torment – uncomfortable in its directness. Respite comes with ‘110 Blues’s languid late-night desert psychedelia, and side one closes with the epic seven and a half minute ‘Amethyst’, expanded & jammed upon from 2017’s Richie Records single into an emotional odyssey with Nance & Schroeder strangling their guitars into a twin-guitar, barbed-wire duel. The album’s centerpiece is ‘In Her Kingdom’, an emotive ballad that fades into view with a plaintive guitar strum, and over seven minutes ebbs and flows with a rising tide of swelling guitars, it’s riffs gilding the melody & adding flecks of gold to Nance’s tale of poverty and grace. Alternately, ‘When I Saw You Last Night’ stalks the night like a predator, finally finding its prey two and a half minutes in with a stinging, blood-drenched guitar solo. The album closes with ‘Prophet’s Prot’s biting commentary on false idolatry that again utilises the group’s not-so-secret weaponry of Nance and Schroeder’s six-string simpatico to bring the listener home. ‘Peaced and Slightly Pulversized’ is out now on Trouble In Mind.

Pan American & Rattle in London tonight, Sir Richard Bishop & Cian Nugent tomorrow!

Good morning!

Two shows this week for you. Tonight at Redon in Bethnal Green we have Pan American making a rare appearance in London. As a member of Labradford and over the course of many classic albums for kranky, Mark Nelson has never confined his music to simple ambience, moulding in noisier elements that work as a counterpoint to the warm tones of his guitar and singing bowls. Pan American creates perfectly crafted microcosms of endless harmony and tonight marks his first visit to the UK this decade. Tickets are available on the door from 7.30pm and Rattle will be opening the show, hot on the heels of their ‘Sequence’ album release last week!

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club to host the sublime Sir Richard Bishop (of Sun City Girls, Rangda, Sublime Frequencies etc) once more! Bishop’s latest album for Drag City ‘The Freak of Araby’ paid homage to his Lebanese heritage, embracing the modes and scales of the Middle East with tributes to guitarists like Omar Khorshid and Mike Hegazi, so we’re expecting to hear a lot of that melodic terrain combined with his trademark globe-trotting, technical skill. Mercurial, Irish, songwriter Cian Nugent will be playing this one too, so it’s well worth coming down early.Tickets available in advance and on the door from 7.30pm.

Read on for more detail on both of these concerts, along with specifics for Mary Lattimore and Hen Ogledd’s upcoming shows, and our newly announced concert for The Shifters too!

PAN AMERICAN
RATTLE
Wednesday 7 November
Redon, Railway Arches, 289 Cambridge Heath Rd, London, E2 9HA
7.30pm | £8 | TICKETS

PAN AMERICAN began during the summer of 1997, Mark Nelson started recording a full length album for kranky at home and at Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Virginia. Mark Nelson had been playing guitar and singing in Labradford, but wanted to explore the possibilities of sampling and computer technology as well as his interests in dub and techno. The self-titled, debut Pan American album came out on kranky in early 1998. Nelson continued to work on Pan American material as he worked with Labradford, learning to play pedal steel guitar, releasing singles on European labels and getting some studio time in with engineer Casey Rice. Rob Mazurek from Chicago Underground Trio and Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low contributed cornet and vocals, respectively. The resulting album, 360 Business / 360 Bypass, was released by kranky in North America (and Blast First in Europe) in early 2000.

After some landmark albums tracing out his territory of sternum-rattling bass rhythms, rippling electronics and outbursts of static with a dub undertow, Pan American slipped back into our consciousness after a break with Cloud Room, Glass Room (Kranky 2013), now adding the estimable talents of Steven Hess (Cleared/Haptic) and Nelson's former Labradford bandmate, Robert Donne to the project. While Nelson assuredly handles all production, the live feel is definitely more prominent, folding in the patter of Hess's percussion and Bobby Donne's languid bass at the centre of seven beautifully diffuse soundscapes bordering on the frontier lands of post-rock, dub techno and ambient electronica, yet never clearly falling within any one sector. Every element is given ample room to breathe thanks to Nelson's typically intricate production render, allowing Hess's hi-hats and cymbal strokes to really shimmer and Donne's bass to ring out wide and sag purposefully low, but you're never really focussed on either, the emphasis is on the whole ecology of sound and the way it's all in fragile and comfortingly sublime equilibrium; a cats cradle of ambient lushness intended to suspend the listener, pensile in its womb-like amniotic fluidity. In these days Nelson is working on his new project Anjou (2 albums on Kranky) and the next Pan American album.

RATTLE are a Nottingham based duo, Rattle focus almost exclusively on drums and more drums, beneath a delicate overlay of vocal harmonies and percussive effects. Formed by Katharine Eira Brown (also of Kogumaza) and Theresa Wrigley (also of Fists), Rattle began as an experiment in crafting rich songs and melody using drums and voice alone. Their music weaves and intertwines post-punk, minimalism and experimental rock, through off-kilter rhythms, patterns and counter melodies. Often starting by picking out the ghost notes from the drums to develop a melody, the song then reveals itself in rounds and harmonies with layer upon layer of rhythm and vocal, lending a choral feel to some of the tracks. Rattle effortlessly blend the avant-garde with irresistible melodies and hypnotic drum beats, using rhythm and harmony to create a refreshing sound that is utterly new - a pretty rare feat these days when we're saturated with so much music. Rattle's debut self-titled album will be released on Upset The Rhythm and I Own You, look out this November for it's exquisite, follow up entitled ‘Sequence’.

SIR RICHARD BISHOP is an experimental guitarist whose improvisations and compositions often reflect the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail. Richard is perhaps best known as a founding member (along with brother Alan Bishop) of experimental ethnic-improv pioneers and underground tricksters Sun City Girls, who for nearly 30 years have produced an extensive discography of over 50 full length albums, 20 one-hour cassettes and a dozen 7" records. Sun City Girls formed in 1981 after the Bishop brothers' stint in the group Paris 1942 which also featured J. Akkari and former Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker.

Richard's first solo record, Salvador Kali, was released by John Fahey's esteemed Revenant label in 1998 under the moniker Sir Richard Bishop (the name stuck). The album showcases Bishop's own particular obsessions and roots, drawing from a variety of worldwide sources. Locust Music issued his second record, Improvika, in 2004. This release consists of nine extemporaneous and free-flowing pieces for solo acoustic guitar. In 2005, Bishop began performing relentlessly as a solo artist, playing throughout Europe, Australia, and the United States. He has not stopped since. 2007 saw the album Polytheistic Fragments released on the Drag City Label. It includes works for acoustic, electric and lapsteel guitar, plus two piano compositions. Next up was The Freak of Araby (Drag City, 2009). In May of 2010, Drag City released the album False Flag by Rangda, a new group featuring Bishop, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Comets on Fire), and Chris Corsano (Flower-Corsano Duo, Flaherty/Corsano, Jandek, Bjork, etc). Richard teamed up with fellow guitarist Bill Orcutt in 2014 for the excellent Road Stories album on Unrock, whilst Drag City again released his most recent solo record, Tangier Sessions. This album sees Bishop's music driven by clever stylistic juxtapositions and attractive melodicism, showcasing his love of Andulsian flamenco guitar style, infusing it with gestures from across Morocco's borders. Richard was also a co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies label (with Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet). The label, whose mission is dedicated to acquiring and releasing obscure sights and sounds from Africa, India, S.E. Asia and beyond, began in 2003 and currently has over 110 releases to its credit.

CIAN NUGENT is a mercurial guitar player and composer from Dublin, Ireland. Cian combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s-'70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school into a deeply personal style. New album, 'Night Fiction' is Cian Nugent's third album but his first taking on the role of singer-songwriter. Where his previous two albums: 2013's 'Born With The Caul' and 2011's 'Doubles' saw him exploring extended guitar based instrumentals with his band, The Cosmos, here he has reigned things in and focused his songwriting skills. Guitar fans, do not fear, there is still plenty of soloing and fingerpicking here. With 7 songs both solo and with his band, this album amalgamates everything Cian has done up to this point and reveals a more broad palate of influences, including The Velvet Underground, Richard Thompson, Television, Neil Young, John Lennon, Fred Neil, etc. Cian will perform this show as a trio showcasing lots of songs from his recent album,'Night Fiction', out now on Woodsist.

Well this is exciting! THE SHIFTERS are heading over to London from Melbourne next MARCH!

THE SHIFTERS
THE COOL GREENHOUSE

Thursday 14 March
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT

THE SHIFTERS are a quintet from Melbourne, who after two 7” singles and demo tape, just unveiled their first proper full-length album entitled ‘Have a Cunning Plan’ (Trouble In Mind). Recorded at Al Montfort of Total Control/Terry’s home studio, ‘Have A Cunning Plan’ ups the fidelity a bit, tempering the up-front crunch of their previous demo. The sonic space suits the band, allowing the unpretentious complexity of the songs & lyrics to generate the “oomph” rather than bludgeoning the listener with treble and feedback. The album showcases ten new tracks by the band at their best; scrappy, self-destructive, stumbling and brilliant pop music that seems tossed off or nonchalant on the surface but is rife with rewards upon further listening. Early album bangers like “Molasses” and the first single “Work/Life, Gym Etc” are instant earworms, (as are “Straight Lines” & “Pyramid Scheme”, the latter reworked from a recent 7-inch) but it’s the simple-yet-sophisticated songcraft of tunes like “How Long?” or the languid strum of “Andrew Bolt” that are heavy on mood and are vehicles for vocalist/guitarist Miles Jansen’s erudite lyrics that simultaneously celebrate and decry the banality of life, while also tackling larger issues of colonialism conservatism’s effects on society at large. On the surface, there’s no denying the band owe a heavy debt to The Fall, but whatever seeds were planted by the late, great Mark E. Smith, have gestated into an animal all their own. ‘Have A Cunning Plan’ aims to take them towards a greater plane.

THE COOL GREENHOUSE make lo-fi, repetitive post-punk with a social conscience. Their debut 7” on Market Square is a treat of elusive DIY moves and sarcastic wit. Very reminiscent of the early 80s post-punk cassette scene and messthetics compilation groups.

Rattle - interviewed by Loud & Quiet

Terrific interview with Rattle by Hayley Scott in the new Loud & Quiet, well worth tracking a copy down!

Friday, 2 November 2018

Rattle's new album released today! Plus Sir Richard Bishop and Pan American in London next week!

Hello again!
Were you at the Grouper show on Monday? We’re still climbing down from those delirious heights! What an event! Thanks for coming out for that and all those others this past week, it’s your support that’s central to all we do, thank you!

Next week we have two Upset The Rhythm events planned. On Wednesday we’re heading to Redon in Bethnal Green for an extremely rare performance from Pan American (kranky records). Mark Nelson is an ambient-drift legend, having played in Labradford (total UTR faves) and spending the best part of twenty years perfecting his synthesis of dub-inflected, electronic soundscapes with Pan American. Rattle will also be lending their amazing double drum/vocally-wheeling performance to this concert too in celebration of their brand new album on Upset The Rhythm called ‘Sequence’, out today no less! More on that to come!

Next Thursday, we turn out attentions to Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, as Sir Richard Bishop (Richard Bishop of Sun City Girls, Rangda, Sublime Frequencies etc) makes his welcome return to London. Richard is a whirling dervish on the guitar, whipping up a storm as he glides between songs effortlessly with all the panache we’ve come to expect. His performance a few years ago at the Tin Tabernacle are an all-time highlight for us, so we’re very pleased he’s coming back to wow us all again.

Mercurial, Irish, songwriter Cian Nugent will be playing this one too, so that’s going to be pretty special. Read on for all the details on both of these concerts, along with specifics of Mary Lattimore’s show on the horizon too!

As we just mentioned, TODAY, we release our final record of 2018: Rattle’s extraordinary sophomore album ‘Sequence’. Talk about leaving the best til last! This stunningly-crafted, detailed deep-listen arrives in shops today on CD, 180g heavyweight black vinyl and digitally. Our webshop is shipping now too!

Rattle is an ongoing musical project concerned with experiments in rhythm, metre and tension. Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley make up the duo from Nottingham, who with just drums and occasional vocalisations weave an expanse of percussive vortices. Their songs swirl and envelop with all the physicality and drama of another world pulling together around its own shifting centre of gravity. The drumbeats phase and side-step, they trade accents and overlap, providing a suitably alive terrain for the vocals to explore similar tendencies of pattern.

Here’s the excellent video for ‘Signal’, “put your ear to the ground, it’s an incredible sound” !

‘Sequence’ was written in much the same way as their debut, with the duo facing each other over their shared palette of drums, allowing songs to develop naturally and suggest their own direction. However, Brown and Wrigley were more confident of what they wanted to achieve with this follow up, having already proven the concept watertight through their debut and subsequent concerts. They knew they could wrestle songs out of the silence with such a setup, so afforded themselves greater time to explore extended, long-form composition.

As a result ‘Sequence’ is composed of just four tracks, each clocking in around 10 mins and focused squarely on a deeper resonance with the creative act, illustrative of how ideas build from scratch, of how music can grow out of repetition. It even feels like a trance or ritual if you give yourself to the recording. Rattle are seeking out a vivid array, an order from the noise, a pattern that unlocks the next.

RATTLE
Wednesday 7 November
