Buffet Lunch, Me Lost Me & Shake Chain at MOTH Club this Friday night!

Woah there!
Friday night needs reigning in!

What an excessively awesome evening of top UK DIY musics we have planned at MOTH Club. Opening the show are chaos wranglers Shake Chain, then we have beguiling off-pop of Me Lost Me, plus Jayne will be joined for this performance by Newcastle jazz stalwarts Faye MacCalman on clarinet and John Pope on double bass! Then with no fear of gilding the lily we lob a Buffet Lunch-shaped cherry on top for the headline slot.

Buffet Lunch write vigorous excursions of post-punk, meandering into clattersome terrain as often as hiking up into the breezy, melodious foothills. The desire to lead the listener along a curious tale helps tie things together, showcasing a lyrical playfulness that pins down their puzzle of sound. Following on from their excellent ‘The Power of Rocks’ album (Upset The Rhythm), the band returned last November with a sprightly new 7” EP. You’d have to be an April Fool to miss this!

Tickets for Friday night are available in advance from Dice, See and We Got Tickets, plus we will have plenty on the door from 7.30pm too, see ya there! #partytime

Buffet Lunch kick off their UK jaunt of a tour tomorrow in Edinburgh, before heading to Manchester and Bristol too, go see them if you get the chance!

Read on for all the particulars on the London appearance below, along with our listings for our other terrific April events for Kristin Hersh and Savage Mansion too!

Talking of tours Es are hitting the road in April too! The band's first proper tour since we released their phantastic debut LP 'Less of Everything' in the early days of the pandemic.

Es is Maria Cecilia Tedemalm (vocals), Katy Cotterell (bass), Tamsin M. Leach (drums) and Flora Watters (keyboards). Their 2016 debut EP, Object Relations, released on London punk label La Vida Es Un Mus, was described as "mutant synth-punk for our dystopian present" (Jess Skolnik, Bandcamp, Pitchfork). The band has since become a vital presence in London's underground DIY music scene, as well as having toured the UK with the Thurston Moore Group.

'Less of Everything' is a triumph of sub-zero melodies, gothic anarcho-punk influences and some kind of entirely unlocatable aquatic component.

SHAKE CHAIN

BUFFET LUNCH are a Scottish group who make it their mission to craft satisfyingly imperfect pop songs filled with imagery and humour. The group's elementary parts are Perry O'Bray (Vocals/Keys/Guitar), Neil Robinson (Bass), John Muir (Lead Guitar) & Luke Moran (Drums), united by a shared love of music on the ABBA-to-Beefheart axis. These four ricochet between Glasgow and Edinburgh, creating music that bristles with DIY spirit and upbeat wonkiness. Their tracks are vigorous excursions, meandering into clattersome terrain as often as hiking up into the breezy, melodious foothills. The desire to lead the listener along a curious tale helps tie things together, showcasing a lyrical playfulness that pins down their puzzle of sound. Following on from their excellent ‘The Power of Rocks’ album (Upset The Rhythm), the band return this November with a vigorous new 7” EP featuring the tracks ‘Mild Weather’ and ‘Cheeks’.

ME LOST ME is the electronic music project of Newcastle based musician Jayne Dent. Described by BBC Radio 6's Tom Robinson as a "brilliant peculiar noise", Me Lost Me delights in experimenting with genre, taking influence from folk, electronica, art pop, ambient and noise music to create a beguiling mix of soaring vocals, synth, field recordings and hypnotic rhythms. Her live shows are atmospheric, dark and playful, with a repertoire that explores storytelling through original songs, improvisations and reworkings of traditional ballads. She recently released her second album 'The Good Noise’, out November 2020, was described as 'stunning' and 'remarkable' by NARC Magazine demonstrates a maturing of her sound and a deepening of her exploration of site and experiments with genre.

SHAKE CHAIN are a 4-piece experimental group formed of artist Kate Mahony (Vocals), Joe Fergey (Drums), Robert Eyres (Guitar/Synth) and Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth) hailing from Bournemouth, London and Oxford. Formed through a love of thought-provoking performance art and a yearning for disruption, they recorded their debut EP ‘Neil Yonge and Bob Doylan Live at Hyde Park’ in 2019 with sound artist David Carugo at Oxford Brookes University, released by Permanent Slump. Shake Chain provide a fusion of post-punk grooves, noise samples and chaotic lamenting on the current state of things.

KRISTIN HERSH (Electric Trio)
FRED ABONG
Thursday 21 April
The Garage, 20-22 Highbury Corner, London, N5 1RD
7.30pm | £25 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/LbdJu2HTUjb

KRISTIN HERSH, most recognised as the front person for the influential art-punk band Throwing Muses and power trio 50FOOTWAVE, will be touring the UK in Spring 2019 with Rob Ahlers (50 Foot Wave) on drums and Fred Abong (Throwing Muses, Belly) on bass. Throwing Muses first gained traction in the early '80s, playing with similarly singular artists, such as The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. They continue to release ground-breaking music, most recently with 2013's double CD masterpiece 'Purgatory/Paradise'. Kristin's solo career spun off in 1994 with the release of 'Hips and Makers', a widely acclaimed album that included 'Your Ghost', a duet with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. Since then, Kristin has released a steady stream of distinctly individual solo albums, including 2010's 'Crooked', released as her first in the inventive book/CD format for which she is now known.

2016's 'Wyatt at the Coyote Palace', on which Kristin played all of the instruments, received rave reviews; an explosive defined by blistering guitars, powerful drumming and her signature visceral vocal technique. Her poignant true stories bring the listener into what the BBC calls Hersh's "dark and dizzy world". In 2004, Kristin formed the noise rock power trio 50FOOTWAVE, releasing a series of frighteningly intense mini-albums, all available for download free of charge. Their most recent 'Bath White' EP was described as "a series of loud explosions, of velvet like dreams all intermingled at the same time. Bath White takes no prisoners." Kristin's writing career has flourished with the highly acclaimed 'Paradoxical Undressing' (released as 'Rat Girl' in the USA) and the award winning 'Don't Suck, Don't Die', a personal account of her long friendship with the late Vic Chesnutt, as well as the enchanting books which now accompany each of her record releases. Kristin's tenth studio album, 'Possible Dust Clouds' was a highly personalised sociopathic gem delivered as a futuristic rewriting of how music works, a melodious breeze with a tail wind of venomous din. Enveloping the juxtaposition of the concept of 'dark sunshine', a brooding solo record created with friends to expand her off-kilter sonic vision; a squally, squeaky mix of discordant beauty. 'Possible Dust Clouds' is a glorious return to form for one of alternative rock's true innovators.

FRED ABONG will be supporting Kristin on her current UK tour dates. Fred is a friend of Kristin’s and former Throwing Muses and Belly bass player. Fred will be touring his new solo acoustic EP, described by himself as sounding like a “ragged Replacements”.

SAVAGE MANSION
ROMEO TAYLOR
THE TUBS
Friday 22 April
New River Studios, 199 Eade Rd, Harringay, London, N4 1DN
7.30pm | £7 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Ee5af990c5b9

SAVAGE MANSION is a vehicle for the songs of Perth-raised singer and guitarist Craig Angus, elsewhere featuring a revolving cast of musicians including Andrew Macpherson and Jamie Dubber (Catholic Action), Lewis Orr (Martha Ffion, Space Rocket Garage Band) and Beth Chalmers (Martha Ffion, Molly Linen). Quickly drawing attention for a high energy live show and Craig’s melodic and eloquent slices of guitar rock, the band were invited to open for Frightened Rabbit at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom and drew the attention of Johnny Lynch (Pictish Trail) who offered to release the ‘Do You Say Hello To Your Neighbours?’ single on Lost Map. This February Savage Mansion release their new album ‘Golden Mountain, Here I Come’, solidifying their reputation as one of the UK’s most prolific emerging guitar bands, and as a hardworking collective drawing from a diverse palette of musical and literary influences. Re-emerging as a five-piece, they’re back with a record that’s hook-laden, poignant, and cryptic. It’s indie rock that’s both an instant feast for the senses and a rich tapestry of sounds and words to pore over and savour.

ROMEO TAYLOR is a cross-platform entertainer and all round good guy, a cherished personality on the DIY Glasgow music scene, as well as a hilarious presence on the Twitch, YouTube & the Twitter-sphere. Romeo is the natural meeting point between Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Gary Rhodes and World Wrestling Entertainment’s beloved 'Attitude Era', making a mockery of the idea that in music, everything's been done before and we’re just repeating ourselves. The Coatbridge native is making quite a name for himself with an astonishing live show that demonstrates both his accomplished songcraft and comedic sensibilities. Look out for his music on Lost Map and Acid Waxa!

THE TUBS were formed in 2019 by Owen Williams and George Nicholls, formerly of much-loved Welsh pop band Joanna Gruesome. The two hunkered down in rural North Wales to expand on the fuzzy, hook-laden sounds they propagated in their former outfit, this time incorporating elements of post-punk, traditional British folk, and guitar jangle seasoned by nonchalant Cleaners From Venus-influenced pop hooks & contemporary antipodean indie bands (Twerps/Goon Sax, et al). After a few lineup shuffles, they recruited Max Warren (bass), Steve Stonholdt (guitar) and Matthew Green (drums) to solidify the current lineup. Trouble In Mind co-released their newest effort worldwide, the ‘Names’ 7-inch EP, alongside Prefect Records in the UK.

'Kibitzer' by Vintage Crop released this June!

Geelong’s favourite sons Vintage Crop return this summer (June 24th) with their much-anticipated fourth album, ‘Kibitzer’. ‘Kibitzer’ sees the band define their field of play, more melodic at times, still bruising, forever droll. These ten tracks of ‘snappy as elastic’ Australian punk are packed with tensile riffage, hefty beats and witty refrains of everyman curiosity.

Today we’re sharing “Double Slants’with you, Vintage Crop’s first single from the ‘Kibitzer’. We’re also announcing that our pre-order for the album on sky-blue vinyl, black vinyl and CD is now up and running.

UTR pre-order: https://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/

Dinked have kindly nurtured a lavish limited version of the LP on white vinyl with accompanying lyric zine, bookmark and live show flexi-disc! That can be chased down here: https://dinkededition.co.uk/vintage-crop-kibitzer

The Space Lady is landing her ship in London this Summer # out of this world!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

THE SPACE LADY

ROBERT SOTELO

Friday 1 July

OSLO, 1a Amhurst Road, Hackney Central, E8 1LL
7pm-10pm | £12.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/J68e0e40746a

THE SPACE LADY began her odyssey on the streets of San Francisco in the late 70s, playing versions of contemporary pop music an accordion and dressed flamboyantly, transmitting messages of peace and harmony. Following the theft of her accordion, The Space Lady invested in a then-new Casio keyboard, birthing an otherworldly new dimension to popular song that has captured the imaginations of the underground and its lead exponents ever since, with the likes of John Maus, Erol Alkan and Kutmah being devotees. Of her early street sets, only one recording was made, self-released originally on cassette and then transferred to a homemade CD. 'The Space Lady's Greatest Hits' released in 2014 through Night School features the best of these recordings - mostly covers but with some originals - pressed on vinyl for the first time and features archival photographs and liner notes from The Space Lady herself. 'Greatest Hits' contains The Space Lady's personal favourites; her haunting take on The Electric Prunes' 'I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night),' a frantic 'Ballroom Blitz' amidst other reconstructed pop music. Following on from this wonderful record, The Space Lady released a split LP in 2015 with the Burnt Ones on Castle Face records which included her spectral take of 'Across The Universe' and a recent LP from 2018 through Mississippi entitled 'On The Street Of Dreams'.

ROBERT SOTELO is a mercurial melodist building a resplendent world of pristine DIY pop from the ground up. The Glasgow-based artist’s songs are meticulously crafted, patchworked together with eclectic arrangements and ardent vocal performances. Last year Upset The Rhythm released Robert Sotelo’s vivid new album ‘Celebrant’. ‘Celebrant’ was intended to be and still is to some extent a joyous wedding album (Sotelo is recently married), but in his own words “the pandemic and the death of my aunt Carmen intersected with the original concept so the album is darker than intended in places.” More cinematic and measured than prior albums, Sotelo expounds that “it is purposefully a bigger sounding attempt at my keyboard songs and I felt more ambitious about it in general.” That’s certainly reflected in these twelve sophisticated loops of song, all curiously affecting and catchy, sprinkled with Sotelo’s offbeat musings and keenly accurate observations. Guitars are rarely employed on this record with Sotelo recruiting Iain Mccall, Ross Blake, Celia Morgan and David Maxwell to contribute brass, woodwind, spoken word and acoustic drums respectively. All of these additions blend well with the album’s synthetic core, softening and subtly shaping its pop-first nature into something more nuanced, vulnerable and human.

Screensaver return with 'Clean Current'!

Thanks Raven Sings The Blues! Screensaver’s neon flicker of AA single is announced today! Super limited quantities (150 copies) of these being made so well worth getting your pre-order on.

Melbourne’s Screensaver follow quickly on their excellent album Expressions of Interest with a new single and the first cut out of the gate sees them sliding away from the darker corners of their debut and into a slackened, neon flicker of synth pop with a pogo pulse. With a crooked smile and a foaming wave of keys, the band cross-wires the maximalist sonic assault of Snapper with the nervy pounce of The Units or Starter.

DEERHOOF return to London this August!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

DEERHOOF
Wednesday 31 August
Electric Ballroom, 184 Camden High St, Camden, London, NW1 8QP, UK
7pm | £17 | Tickets:  https://link.dice.fm/pc5188b40f90 (on sale from Wed 16 March,10am)

DEERHOOF have continually quested for daring storytelling and radical sounds over their eighteen boundless albums, as experimental as they are pop. 2020’s critically acclaimed, overwhelmingly prescient Future Teenage Cave Artists explored fairytale visions of post-apocalypse, welding intrinsic melodies with absurdist digital recording methods. Its immediate sequel Love-Lore, a live covers medley, channeled futurist mid-century artists—Parliament, Sun Ra and Stockhausen, to name a handful— into a patchwork love letter to the anti-authoritarian expressions that inspire the band.

Deerhoof's latest, Actually, You Can, is a genre-abundant record that uses technicolor vibrancy and arpeggiated muscularity to offer a vital shock from capitalism’s purgatorial hold. The band says, “Think of all the beauty, positivity and love that gets deemed ugly, negative and hateful by the self-proclaimed guardians of 'common sense.' We'd hardly be destroying society by dismantling their colonial economics and prisons and gender roles and aesthetics. We'd be creating it!”

Rachel Aggs + Electric Fire - Cafe OTO show announced!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

RACHEL AGGS
ELECTRIC FIRE

Monday 11 July
Cafe OTO, 18-22 Ashwin St, London, E8 3DL
7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/H8123dbd413f

RACHEL AGGS is a multi instrumentalist and songwriter based in Glasgow. Aggs, a prolific specialist in euphoric post-punk, has achieved international acclaim with collaborative touring projects Trash Kit, Shopping and Sacred Paws. Creating zines and co-ordinating workshops that encourage women, non-binary people, and people of colour to form bands, Aggs has galvanised the DIY scene in the UK. Aggs released a solo album on Lost Map records as part of their Visitations residency in 2019 and self released //Tape 1// in 2020. Both releases showcase Aggs’ signature hybrid post-punk/highlife inspirations stripped down to new minimal extremes. Pulsating, electronic beats, coolly-recited lyrical mantras and spindly guitar lines abound in this life affirming music that speaks directly to your heart.
https://r4ggs.bandcamp.com

ELECTRIC FIRE is made up of Alicia (vocals), Ehima (drums, percussion and vocals), Sam (synths and vocals) and William (laptop, production and vocals). Their unique sound was developed through Heart n Soul’s digital music project SoundLab. It has evolved into an incredible live act, and the band have performed on stages from Hong Kong to Amsterdam, London to Paris. Their heart lifting, feel good second EP Buzzin’ is all about having fun. Opening with a song about the feeling you get when everything is going your way, from having rice or sausage rolls for lunch to touring Hong Kong, this is a band who are all relentlessly positive! Buzzin’ contains four incredible ‘egg funk’ bangers that could only be made by one of the best bands on the planet.

Model Home - Two day residency at Cafe OTO in June!

Upset The Rhythm presents...

MODEL HOME - Two day residency
w/ HORACIO POLLARD + GAUTE GRANLI (June 10)
w/ ROBIN STEWART + DEE BYRNE (June 11)

Friday 10 & Saturday 11 June
Cafe OTO, 18-22 Ashwin St, Dalston, London, E8 3DL
7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/D89677f3b3be

MODEL HOME is a hyperprolific experimental hip-hop formation from Washington D.C., instigated by rapper NappyNappa and producer Pat Cain. The duo recruits an ever-changing cast of collaborators to give each record a new feel: Model Home can sound like post-modern take on old school hip-hop, glitchy noise or even improvised exploration. The gist of Model Home is that the music pours out like from a faucet, faithfully channeling the chaos of the everyday thought. Model Home’s music would blend right in with a dystopia. The deteriorating sounds of Patrick Cain’s electronics would be impossible to distinguish from the constant construction that is the score of any contemporary city; NappyNappa’s enigmatic missives would be lost in the roar of public service announcements, personalized advertisements, and omnipresent sirens. Built on the edifice of dub sound systems and DIY basement clatter, their sound is made up of slabs of textured noise and decayed vocals. Releases on Disciples, Don Giovanni Records and Future Times.
https://modelhomedc.bandcamp.com/

HORACIO POLLARD as ever manages to be absurd, entertaining and challenging all at the same time – it’s frequently hard to position yourself as a listener in the face of this much great / ridiculous music, and you won’t know whether to guffaw or groan. Who can resist the fun-charged pull of these primitive patterns and primitive, near-ugly sounds? Pollard is one of the few creative people on the globe (Romain Perrot is another) who understands that “good taste” is the very death of art, and as such he needs to be cherished like a Siberian Tiger, albeit one whose pelt is made from artificial dayglo blue fur.
https://bandcamp.com/tag/horacio-pollard

GAUTE GRANLI channels the churning and grating of unknown presences in a field of indeterminacy into the bulk of his disorienting one-man choir, where moans distorted by their own reverberation are sustained by the trickling and pounding of unseen forces. A new state of presence, welcoming heightened sensory lashings that leave a strange, indelible mark.
https://soundcloud.com/verletzte-kreature

ROBIN STEWART is one half of energetic techno-noise duo Giant Swan with Harry Wright. Recent solo EPs ‘Time Travel' (Trilogy Tapes), ‘Marsupial’ (No Corner) and ‘Albatross’ (ipaadai) showcase Stewart stepping out on his own with bursts of mutated techno, cavernous dub, industrial pulses and echoed vocals.
https://soundcloud.com/djmag/premiere-robin-stewart-triffid

DEE BYRNE is a London-based saxophonist, composer and improviser. Dee collaborates with artists from the UK and Europe who occupy the area of contemporary jazz, avant-garde and free improvisation. Fuelled by a love of improvisation and a growing obsession for effects pedals, Dee’s solo project blends acoustic sounds with interweaving electronic textures and moody soundscapes. WIRE magazine described Byrne’s music as a collection of  “smudged, sultry alto lines that conjure a Fourth Wolrld ambience.”
