Upset The Rhythm
have a couple of shows coming up in the next week for you! Tomorrow we’re lucky
enough to have Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3, Spectrum, E.A.R.) and Happy Meals in town for a show at Hackney’s OSLO club. If you love all sounds
multidimensional, spaced-out and psychedelically radiant then we’ve got you
covered! The show will run early, taking place between 6.30pm – 10pm,
with Happy Meals starting from 7.30pm, take heed! Early! Early! Plus we will
have some tickets on the door for £10 too.
Our
second upcoming concert will take place next Thursday with both Protomartyr and The Pheromoans performing at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club. All
looks set for an evening of top-drawer idiosyncratic post-punk sprawl. Full

Also, this week we’ve
been busy newly confirming two more shows, this time both by artists on our
label! The first takes place on August 11th and sees percussion aces
Rattle launch their debut album at
St Pancras Old Church. In support we have the illustrious Charles Hayward performing both his 30-minute snare roll and bell
agency sets, alongside Ex-Easter Island
Head in solo mode, not one to miss! We’re also thrilled to welcome back Pega Monstro to London at the end of
September for a special show at the 100 club. Time better get flying! Both events

SONIC BOOM is the alias
on Pete Kember, who since the early 1980’s has been exploring his unique vision
of music and sound through different outputs, working with some crucial
musicians (Eddie Prévost, Kevin Shields, Delia Derbyshire, Stereolab, just to
name a few) and, mostly in the last few years, applying his touch to amazing
pop/rock records from MGMT (“Congratulations”) to Panda Bear (“Tomboy”). His
career started in 1983 with Spacemen 3 alongside Jason Pierce, a band that
helped define space-rock, shoegaze and drone-rock, recording albums that
influenced an incalculable amount of bands up to the present day (and going).
American Primitive music, Brian Wilson, Suicide, kraut rock, the British rave
scene (the Kember half of “Recurring”) were decisive pieces of artistic
information in what regards the band’s sound and Kember was the man behind some
of the most iconic songs of the unit, like “Suicide”, “Losing Touch With My
Mind” or “Big City (Everybody I Know Can Be Found Here)”.
When they disbanded, Pete Kember started new projects that he's kept progressing in to this day. Spectrum, which is a continuation of the more rock-based work he did in Spacemen 3, and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research), as the names suggests, is his vehicle for working in more abstract domains, making beautiful and mindblowing mostly-synth-based pieces. In the last two decades he’s also played and collaborated outside of his monikers with a number of artists, including Stereolab, Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine (during their reformation tour in 2009), Britta Philips & Dean Wareham and Sun Araw and most recently worked on Peaking Lights’s remix album (“Lucifer In Dub”). For this show Pete will perform as a duo with guitarist Jason Holt to bring the Sonic Boom hurtling through our ears.

HAPPY MEALS make sensual, spellbinding lo-fi pop. Sounding like the work of Saada Bonaire's long-lost slacker offspring, debut album ’Apéro' is actually the produce of two Glasgow-based artists, Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook, who originally hail from the Scottish borders. Suzanne sings in a unique mix of French and Scottish, occasionally sharing the mic with Lewis over the course of six songs taking the 100% Silk/NNF pop aesthetic and psych-dub freedom of Peaking Lights to a more ambiguous, enchanted headspace. It's all top notch stuff, from the nine minute celestial sashay of 'Crystal Salutation' through the chiming boogie of 'Altered Images' to the blown-out dub-pop of 'The Age Of Love', and the Balearic acid of 'Le Voyage’. Brand new EP, ‘Fruit Juice’ sees Happy Meals sharpened and expanded, taking their tender experimental beginnings and unabashed pop moments into undiscovered realms glowing with possibility, check it out now through Night School Records.

PROTOMARTYR play a taut, austere rock that's been
incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette
butts and warmed occasionally by space heaters. Short songs made for short
practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold,
Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but
off-kilter. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn't the primitive
stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges' greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even
if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too
retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is "stuck
between the cracks." If that's the case, though, they aren't alone.
Protomartyr's economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like
Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek
(whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr).
Singer Joe Casey's dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting
his bandmates (guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott
Davidson) the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section.
This is never more apparent than on the band's excellent new LP on Hardly Art,
'The Agent Intellect'.

Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The Pheromoans write songs for the end of the queue, songs that prowl the periphery, songs that stand up on the bus and stare out through the window, blasted through with brilliant sprawling sunshine. Over the last nine years the band have released a slew of records, including numerous EPs, 7"s, mini-albums and LPs through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press, Clan Destine and Upset The Rhythm. These recordings largely focused on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like path throughout the songs. Brand new album ‘I’m On Nights’ was just released through Alter and features the band stalking into a world of drum machine clicks, spaced-out keyboard ditties and ennui-soaked rhymes.
