Hygiene's new album + London shows for Lea Bertucci, Brigid Mae Power and Bill Nace!

Morning one and all!

This week we unveiled our new record from Hygiene! That’s right, May 24th will bear witness to the release of 'Private Sector'! Hygiene released a slew of singles and an LP on various DIY labels in the US and the UK at the turn of the decade, now the London post-punk stalwarts return from hiatus with their sophomore effort.

Where their debut LP ‘Public Sector’ reflected a nostalgic longing for an unrealised socialist modernist utopia, ‘Private Sector’ finds Hygiene confronting the grim realities of the now.

Hygiene aim their sights against the neoliberal madness of utility cartels, tax havens and most acutely privatised railways, seizing the moment as the current period of interregnum sees the old ideological certainties come into question. The Quietus have just helped us announce the record by posting first track 'Replacement Bus', boasting that signature Hygiene sound, brooding melodies, a choppy, aggressive discipline and restricted pop sensibility.

‘Private Sector’ is available to pre-order now through our webshop here.

Recommended for all you fans of Real Ale, British Rail Class 55 Deltics, Euston station and Jeremy Corbyn.

This week we also announced new London concerts from Deerhoof, Daniel Higgs and Normil Hawaiians too, check out our listings for dates and ticket links. We’re also focusing on our next three events here in more detail. Below you’ll find us edging towards verbose about next Tuesday’s show at Iklectik in Lambeth for New York composer and alto saxophonist Lea Bertucci (NNA Tapes).

Bertucci’s incredible music explores space, pattern and sensitivity through sculptural textures of sax, layered tape loops and field recordings. Here’s a video of her to get you primed for new composition Projection / Reflection. Chase Coley & Pascal Colman will be opening this show with their improvised duo set too, so make sure you pop down early.

We also outline below our upcoming CafĂ© OTO show for Brigid Mae Power and Aoife Nessa Frances (April 23rd), as well as detailing April 29th’s Islington throw-down with the combined forces of Bill Nace & James Twig Harper and Glands Of External Secretion.
Enjoy…

LEA BERTUCCI: Projection/Reflection
CHASE COLEY & PASCAL COLMAN
Tuesday 16 April
IKLECTIK, Old Paradise Yard, 20 Carlisle Lane, London, SE1 7LG
7.30pm | £10 | TICKETS

LEA BERTUCCI is an American composer and performer whose work describes relationships between acoustic phenomena and biological resonance. In addition to her instrumental practice, (alto saxophone and bass clarinet), her work often incorporates multi-channel speaker arrays, electroacoustic feedback, extended instrumental technique and tape collage. Deeply experimental, her work is unafraid to subvert musical expectation. Her discography includes a number of solo and collaborative releases on independent labels and last year she released the critically acclaimed 'Metal Aether' on NNA tapes, as well as a commission for percussion ensemble Tigue and a second edition of her much anticipated graphic score book, 'The Tonebook', on Inpatient Press. She has performed extensively across the US and Europe with presenters such as The Kitchen, PS1 MoMA, Blank Forms, The Walker Museum, Roulette, ESS Chicago, Sound of Stockholm Festival, and the Le Guess Who Festival. She is a 2016 MacDowell Fellow in composition and a 2015 ISSUE Project Room Artist-in-Residence. For this special concert in London, Betucci will present her new sensory Projection/Reflection performance.
http://lea-bertucci.com/

CHASE COLEY & PASCAL COLMAN are artists and experimental musicians who have been performing as a free improvising duo since 2014 where they have made appearances at a variety of events and exhibitions around London and the UK including 2017’s Supernormal fest and east London’s Dronica series. Blurring the distinctions between noise, ambient music, performance and live sound design they present a mode of improv which is idiomatic but one where the idiom is very much their own. Both see their collaborative practice as an exercise in listening where, by the formation of new and unpredictable sonic relationships comprised of new instrumental voices (literally achieved by the fabrication of new acoustic instruments) they coerce their audience to engage with the sound which is both pure and immediate.

BRIGID MAE POWER
AOIFE NESSA FRANCES

Tuesday 23 April
Cafe OTO, 18-22 Ashwin St, London, E8 3DL
7.30pm | £10 | TICKETS

BRIGID MAE POWER is an Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, like Judee Sill, Micky Newburyor Linda Perhacs before her, paints her songs in dreamily expansive strokes, transporting earthly compositions into universal and exultant realms. Her self-titled debut on Tompkins Square was a majestic suite of reverb-swathed laments for voice, guitar, piano, accordion, and harmonium, recorded at the Portland studio of key musical foil Peter Broderick. Themes include transformation, change, motherhood, acceptance, strength, courage and trust. In the words of Power, the album was about "trusting if you lose yourself or your way - you can come back". New album 'The Two Worlds' is another masterful collection of effortless, hypnotic folk, and an album that furthers the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist's already stellar reputation. Live, Brigid can encapsulate the timeless magic of her songs either solo or as a duo with Peter. Thus far she has toured throughout Ireland, UK and the US together with artists including Lee Ranaldo, Richard Dawson, Alasdair Roberts, Peter Broderick and Ryley Walker, with performances at Le Guess Who? and TUSK festivals along the way.

AOIFE NESSA FRANCES is a Dublin born musician and singer-song writer. She is inspired by the poetic styles of folk music and psychedelic rock.

BILL NACE & JAMES TWIG HARPER
GLANDS OF EXTERNAL SECRETION
Monday 29 April
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £8 | TICKETS

BILL NACE is an artist and musician based in Western Massachusetts. He has collaborated with an extraordinary range of musicians, including Michael Morley, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano, Jooklo Duo, Chris Cooper, Samara Lubelski, Thurston Moore, Jake Meginsky, Jessica Rylan, Paul Flaherty, Wally Shoup, and Kim Gordon, with whom he regularly plays as one half of the duo Body/Head. Their critically acclaimed LP 'The Switch' was released on Matador last year. He has been a featured musician in festivals such as ATP (curated by Jim Jarmusch and held in Monticello, NY), Colour Out of Space (Brighton, UK), Supersonic Festival (Birmingham, UK), International Festival Musique Actuelle (Victoriaville, QC), and Homegrown (Boston, MA). Nace's range of guitar playing has been described as "veering from sculptural, almost Remko-Scha-esque chime to Loren Connors-style elegance in only a few short moves." Recordings found on Ecstatic Peace (Northampton, MA), Ultra Eczema (Belgium), Holidays (Italy), 8mm (Italy), Throne Heap (VA), HP Cycle (Toronto, ON), as well as on Nace's own label Open Mouth.

JAMES TWIG HARPER really pulls out real time-and-space bending tracks. Harper, perhaps best known for his collaborations with Nate Young in Nautical Almanac and alongside Daniel Higgs for Thrill Jockey, holds some genuine weirdness within. He has a distinctly unique fidelity and gyroscopic dynamic that makes for a deliciously disorienting experience all of his own conception. There's an animalistic or perhaps even plant-like bio-logic to its devolved, dubbed-out arcana, a grunting, scraping, grubbing ecological complexity of sounds that grows, twists and bifurcates at seemingly haphazard junctions to catalyse chain reactions of constant change and multiple layers of surreality. Sometimes Harper's music can enters passages which sound almost like a primitive take on Florian Hecker's plonging, rubbery computer music or Rashad Becker's perplexing notional folk music. Check out his releases on Open Mouth, Planam, Thrill Jockey and Heresee for the full tangle.

GLANDS OF EXTERNAL SECRETION began when Seymour Glass, inspired by J.D. Salinger's short story 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish', starts publishing the legendary Bananafish Zine in 1987, which for eighteen issues and up until 2004, constitutes a huge and ambitious attempt of presenting underground culture in its every form. Completely unknown experimental branchings, with a preference for the lo-fi, collage aesthetics, Glass's paranoid and absurd manner of writing and the whole structuring of the noise scene, with San Francisco as a starting point and every "tweaked" corner of the globe as a destination, found their home in Bananafish and their main representative in Seymour Glass. Glands of External Secretion began as Glass wanted to testify further via weird monuments of experimental and far-out studio improv, using a surreal collage of songs, sounds, Barbara Manning's vocals, voice samples, loops, out-of-context rhythms, field recordings, electronics, cut-up manipulated noises and anything else which is not considered music. The result is a twisted riot of sound bordering on audacity which the term 'extremely psychedelic' fails to completely encapsulate.

NEW SHOW: Normil Hawaiians + Rattle + Erasers this July!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

NORMIL HAWAIIANS
RATTLE
ERASERS

Thursday 11 July
Cafe OTO, 18-22 Ashwin St, London, E8 3DL

7.30pm | £7 | https://link.dice.fm/SO9KbaiePV

NORMIL HAWAIIANS communal take on post punk sprouted leaves from its mouth in 1982, and began carving out a new furrow. Greater emphasis was awarded to improvisation within the group and as a result their songs embarked on longer, freer journeys towards the beaten bounds. They wanted these new songs to bear the weight of their new collective spirit so comfort zones had to be left behind. Tape loops, echo boxes, extended percussive sessions and duteous faith in the tones emanating from a particular old wah-wah pedal were all employed by Normil Hawaiians to stretch their sonic fabric into wild and redolent new dimensions. Within three years the band went on to record three astonishing records, their ambitious double-LP debut ‘More Wealth Than Money’, ‘What’s Going On?’ with its radical collage of movements and ‘Return Of The Ranters’ which teamed up their free experiments in compelling arrhythmia with a more confrontational approach. Upset The Rhythm have released ‘More Wealth’ and ‘Ranters’ recently in remastered form, and this special live manifestation at Cafe OTO celebrates the reissue of 1984’s ‘What’s Going On?’ masterstroke (out June 28th). Lucid, candid, politically engaged, rarely metronomic but always humane, Normil Hawaiians conjure vast clouds of atmosphere. Their songs are bedecked with exalted synth trails, clustering guitar rapture, motorik beats, and spun-out raw polemics. Still light years ahead of us all!

RATTLE are a Nottingham based duo, Rattle focus almost exclusively on drums and more drums, beneath a delicate overlay of vocal harmonies and percussive effects. Formed by Katharine Eira Brown (also of Kogumaza) and Theresa Wrigley (also of Fists), Rattle began as an experiment in crafting rich songs and melody using drums and voice alone. Their music weaves and intertwines post-punk, minimalism and experimental rock, through off-kilter rhythms, patterns and counter melodies. Often starting by picking out the ghost notes from the drums to develop a melody, the song then reveals itself in rounds and harmonies with layer upon layer of rhythm and vocal, lending a choral feel to some of the tracks. Rattle effortlessly blend the avant-garde with irresistible melodies and hypnotic drum beats, using rhythm and harmony to create a refreshing sound that is utterly new - a pretty rare feat these days when we're saturated with so much music. Rattle's impressive ‘Sequence’ album came out last November through Upset The Rhythm.

ERASERS deliver up rhythmic and mood-driven music that sits between kosmische and post-punk. Forming as a home recording project in 2009 the Perth, West Australian based Erasers (Rebecca Orchard, Rupert Thomas) released a steady flow of cd-rs, tapes and a 7” before eventually releasing their debut full length ‘Stem Together’ in 2015. In 2017 the duo followed up with the tape release ‘Fault Lines’. In the live sphere Erasers have shared the stage with the likes of Low, Grouper, Acid Mothers Temple, Prince Rama, High Wolf and The Soft Machine as well as multiple shows with long time musical heroes My Disco, Love Of Diagrams and Pikelet. After an extensive recording and mixing process, 2019 sees Erasers with two new releases to share; a 5 track tape titled ‘Forecast’ (through Solid Melts) and the duo’s second full length ‘Pulse Points’ (through Fire Talk and Pouring Dream).

DICE: https://link.dice.fm/yAMODEDBNV

DANIEL HIGGS is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output - spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings - simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of Daniel Higgs the maxim rings truer than ever. Higgs is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity. In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. Higgs weaves meditative, casually ruptured drones using acoustic and electric guitar, upright pianos, banjo and jew’s harp, recorded entirely at home on cassette recorder. He pairs the music with a series of paintings that call to mind religious iconography passed through the disfiguring surrealism of Miro. His art is of the cosmos.

DEERHOOF in London this September, now that's what I'm talking about!

Upset The Rhythm presents...

DEERHOOF
Monday 2 September
EartH
11-17 Stoke Newington Rd, Dalston, London, N16 8BH
7.30pm | £15 | https://link.dice.fm/6lOGGiILLV (Tickets on sale tomorrow at 10am)!

DEERHOOF is four people. Satomi Matsuzaki plays bass and sings, Greg Saunier plays drums, John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez play guitars. But what is Deerhoof really? Hell if we know. Pitchfork went so far as to label Deerhoof as "the best band in the world.” From their humble beginnings as an obscure San Francisco noise act, they've become one of indie music's most influential bands with their ecstatic and unruly take on pop.

"Deerhoof are amazing. They're nuts, they'll freak you out." (Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters)
"Deerhoof deserve far more recognition." (Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead)

'Private Sector' and the return of Hygiene this May!

Hygiene are back this May with their new album 'Private Sector'! The Quietus have just announced the album with the first track 'Replacement Bus', all aboard!

Pre-order the Lp here too:
http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/

HYGIENE released a slew of singles and an LP on various DIY labels in the US and the UK at the turn of the decade, now the London post-punk stalwarts return from hiatus with their sophomore effort, ‘Private Sector’. Where their debut LP ‘Public Sector’ (2011, La Vida Es Un Mus) reflected a nostalgic longing for an unrealised socialist modernist utopia, ‘Private Sector’ finds them confronting the grim realities of the present. Hygiene rail against the neoliberal madness of utility cartels, tax havens and privatised railways, seizing the moment as the current period of interregnum sees the old ideological certainties come into question. Proving nostalgia to be an inescapable trap, the band continue to hearken back to the kind of post-punk that existed before anybody knew to affix the ‘post’ prefix. ‘Private Sector’ (out May 24th through Upset The Rhythm) has the signature Hygiene sound, mixing brooding melodies with a choppy, aggressive approach and a restricted pop sensibility. However, this ever-so-slightly-more mature record finds the band taking advantage of the musicianship of their friends, mixing in the odd viola, glockenspiel, piano and keyboard.  Recommended for fans of Real Ale, British Rail Class 55 Deltics, Euston station and Jeremy Corbyn.

Alex Rex, Irma Vep London shows this week, Lea Bertucci next week!

Hey again!
Thanks so much for coming out this last week to see Jandek, The Flying Luttenbachers and Coolies, what a sonic voyage those three proved to be! We’re keeping things interesting with three more shows on the closing horizon too. Here’s the run down.

This Wednesday sees us host our first night at SET Space on Dalston Lane, just round the corner from CafĂ© OTO. We’re truly spoiled as we have Alex Rex (Alex Neilson of Trembling Bells) booked to perform the starkly loping, folk songs off his redemptive and emotionally-raw new album ‘Otterburn’. Irish DIY popstar Myles Manley is down to support, along with 11th Hour Adventists, featuring Jowe Head from TVPs and Swell Maps. So yeh, quite the banquet of song planned, tickets for this one are £6 and will be available from 7.30pm on the door, sounds great!

Then on Thursday night, we have a special double bill from Irma Vep and Es at The Islington. The Quietus sum up Irma Vep best as a “construct built around Manchester-entrenched Welshman Edwin Stevens, a bowerbird of outsider music that makes awkward compositions designed to tear you down, just to build you up again.” Irma Vep is a nascent whirlwind of fried guitar abandon and bedroom pop noir, always astonishing live, not to be missed.

Es also set the pace with their insistent, icy post punk, quite simply pulse-quickening, can’t wait!

Our third show on this leg will take place at Iklectik in Lambeth next Tuesday and features a rare outing from New York composer and alto saxophonist Lea Bertucci. Her fascinating music explores space, pattern and sensitivity through sculptural textures of sax, layered tape loops and field recordings. Her recent ‘Metal Aether’ album on NNA Tapes was rightly heralded a triumph. For this special show Bertucci will be airing her new composition Projection / Reflection. Chase Coley & Pascal Colman will be opening this show with their electrifying duo set too, so make sure you head down early.

Lots more info and ticket links for all three shows to follow, plus we’ve added two events to our June programme from Sacred Paws and Elf Power too! That’s shaping up into a winning month!

Since we last talked we also shared this terrific video from Upset The Rhythm artists Rattle for their epic track DJ, thought we’d share that with you here too! Enjoy!

DJ is the first song we wrote for the new album and is the first song on Sequence, explains Katharine Eira Brown of Rattle. It became our first 'long' song and set the tone for the album. It had the uncanny magic of being perceived as being 'the new one' for a very long time, probably because it took a very long time to 'pin down' and took a lot of different forms before it settled into place, and would sound radically different depending on tuning of my snare, the sound of the room, and the amount of delay.

ALEX REX
MYLES MANLEY
11TH HOUR ADVENTISTS
Wednesday 10 April
SET Space, 27A Dalston Ln, London, E8 3DF
7.30pm | £6 | TICKETS

ALEX REX is the solo project from Alex Neilson (founding member and songwriter of folk-rock band Trembling Bells & collaborator with Bonnie Prince Billy) and friends. Singing songs of love, loss and loathing. This is his first UK tour to promote new album 'Otterburn' (Tin Angel Records). Known for his continuing collaborations with Alasdair Roberts and Richard Youngs, and for his work with the elusive Jandek, Alex grew up in Leeds and now resides in London. An accomplished drummer, percussionist and singer who draws from jazz, psychedelia and the darker side of folk music, 'Otterburn' reunites Alex with two of his Trembling Bells band mates, Lavinia Blackwall and Mike Hastings. Aside from being a staple part of the folk-rock revival, Rex has performed alongside artists including Lucky Luke, The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden, Ashtray Navigations, Alastair Galbraith and Isobel Campbell. He has also toured with several folk artists who have enjoyed a late rediscovery of their work, including Scott Fagan, Nick Garrie, Mike Heron and Shirley Collins. Alex's new release was the product of a cataclysmic event in his personal life which happened in April 2017. Sadly, Alex's brother Alastair passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on his canal boat in Leeds. The youngest of three boys, Alastair embodied all his family's best qualities and was a charming and spontaneous friend to anyone lucky enough to cross his path. Forged in pain and made in Glasgow, Otterburn heaves with sorrow, despair, a sense of humour and a unique perspective that could only come from experiencing deep loss.
https://alexrex.bandcamp.com/album/otterburn

MYLES MANLEY is a consistently inventive pop star from Sligo, Ireland. His provocative and idiosyncratic take on guitar pop makes for a thrilling and vibrant show. ‘Myles Manley’ is currently a three piece guitar band consisting of Myles Manley, longstanding collaborator Christopher Barry and Cork’s drummer Solamh Kelly (Trumpets of Jericho, Dragons of Shandon). They spent the year honing an album of percussive, skeletal protest-pop music which is an exact replica of their joyful live set, which will have value as a historical document when it comes out.
http://www.mylesmanley.com/

11TH HOUR ADVENTISTS are a collaboration between Jasmine Pender (aka solo artist Rotten Bliss) and Jowe Head (ex Swell Maps, Television Personalities). They met ten years ago at a concert by Einsturzende Neubaten, which is a clue to the way that they get their kicks. Their collaboration is one of equal but balancing elemental forces, like hot engine oil poured into freezing water, or volcanic lava thrown high into the arctic air, a weird kind of alchemy.   Their debut album together is intoxicating, brewed from their diseased imaginations into a strange synthesis of psych-folk, punk sleaze and ambient drone, but mostly it is simply indefinable.

Upset The Rhythm presents…

IRMA VEP
ES
Thursday 11 April
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle St, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £6 | TICKETS

IRMA VEP is a loner, a joker, a roamer, a ribald construct riddled with both earnest anxiety and mercurial songwriting talent birthed by a young Edwin Stevens in Llanfairfechan, North Wales. Thrust into life after his mum bought a four track recorder for him, Edwin started recording for the cathartic process rather than the outcome. Having since fully grown into Irma Vep and now residing in Glasgow, Stevens' discography has expanded to document every aspect of his music, from ecstatically free group experiments to bare, sparse songwriting that cuts to the quick, shorn of ornament or pretence.

Stevens moonlights in several other groups (Sex Hands, Klaus Kinski, Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura, Yerba Mansa), bringing with him an instantly recognisable guitar language. However, it's in Irma Vep that his most life-affirming, troubling and thrilling music is made. Much Irma Vep feels like what "classic" music should feel like if it weren't so Classic. Each record, each song and each performance exists as an evolving drama. Edwin has toured the West Coast of America after being invited by Chris Johanson to play his Quiet Music Festival of Seattle and Portland. Irma Vep's latest offering 'Evil', talks of repression and the consequences of repression, channeling Edwin's influences of The Rebel, Lou Reed, Katherine Dunn, Dennis Cooper, Michael Yonkers, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Cat Power, Smog, Henry Flynt and Nico.
https://irmavepirmavep.bandcamp.com/

ES are the soundtrack to your no-wave nightmares, proffering 'mutant synth-punk for our dystopian present' (Jes Skolnik). Ethereal synths, tense basslines, wired drums and cold vocals collide, proving curiously dark, intense and unrelenting. After releasing their debut 'Object Relations' 12" EP on La Vida Es Un Mus in 2016, all members now reside in London and are working towards an album in 2019. ES feature members of Public Service, The Worms, Primetime and Scrap Brain.

SACRED PAWS are back with a new album and London show!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

SACRED PAWS
Thursday 13 June
Redon, Railway Arches, 289 Cambridge Heath Rd, London, E2 9HA
7.30pm | £8.50 | https://link.dice.fm/C8okUmDaCV

SACRED PAWS are a fantastic, intuitive dream punk duo, comprising Eilidh Rodgers of Golden Grrls on drums, and Rachel Aggs from Trash Kit and Shopping on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky, infectious riffage. Rock Action released the band’s debut album ‘Strike A Match’ in 2017 and it received a slew of incredible reviews from the likes of Q, DIY, Clash, Loud & Quiet, The Skinny and was voted Scottish Album of the Year too! Forthcoming album ‘Run Around The Sun’ (out May 31st on Merge / Rock Action) brims with upbeat reflections on growing up and looking back. Shimmering guitar riffs dance between snappy beats and swooning melodies that will have crowds committing to far more than a simple head-bob. “I think we’d get bored if it was too slow,” Eilidh says. “We’d never want to play something live that people couldn’t dance to. It would feel really strange to us. It’s kind of the whole point.”

Upset The Rhythm presents…

ELF POWER (Elephant 6)
Wednesday 19 June
OSLO, 1a Amhurst Road, Hackney Central, E8 1LL
7.30pm | £12.50 | https://link.dice.fm/YpweOlBRBV

ELF POWER are among the few bands from the Elephant 6 Recording Company that continue to make music to this day, and their prolificacy has been an absolute treat to fans. Elf Power formed in 1994 and over the last 23 years have released thirteen albums, two eps, and a handful of singles, while touring North America, Europe, and Japan many times. Albums such as 1998's Dave Fridmann-produced "A Dream In Sound" and 2008's collaboration with the late Vic Chesnutt, "Dark Developments" have cemented the bands' reputation as the finest purveyors of modern melodic psychedelic folk rock around. Their tour in support of their last album , 2013's "Sunlight on the Moon", took them on an extensive tour in support of Neutral Milk Hotel's much acclaimed reunion tour, as well as dates with Broken Bells and headlining dates.

Their latest album "Twitching in Time" (Orange Twin, 2017) combines experimental arrangements and sublime songwriting with their powerful live bombast, into their strangest, most cohesive, and most exciting sounding album yet. Opening track "Halloween Out Walking" combines minimal and beautiful folk rock arrangements with otherworldy Moog synthesizer gurglings to awe-inspiring effect. Other highlights include "Watery Shreds", a piano ballad that transforms itself into an explosive an unexpected distorted guitar drone freakout, sounding like an unlikely marriage of avant-garde keyboardist Laurie Anderson and drone metallers Sunn 0)) . Songs like the title track and "Cycling Aimlessly" are classic fuzzed out melodic rock songs the likes of which the band has become known for , while songs like "Gorging on the Feast" explore a jazzy, melancholy terrain before descending into a shredding heavy rock assault. The constant shifting of sounds and styles makes for one of the band's most diverse and satisfying albums yet. On this album, singer/songwriter Andrew Rieger and longtime collaborator multi-instrumentalist Laura Carter are joined by Matthew Garrison on bass, Peter Alvanos on drums, and Davey Wrathgabar on guitar.

Jandek tonight, The Flying Luttenbachers on Friday and Coolies this Saturday in London!

Morning everyone!

Thanks so much to all of you for coming out this last week to see Upset The Rhythm on tour around the UK with our label showcase. We had the best time, countless highlights and it was fantastic to meet so many of you. Here’s to the start of the next 15 years, yeh!

Also, we’re down to the last 20 of our special screen-printed posters commemorating UTR XV too, so if you want one of those they are now for sale in our webshop here!

OK, back to London now, we have three shows on the cards this week. Tonight the enigmatic, outsider mystery that is Jandek will be performing at Bush Hall! For the last 40 years the Corwood representative has operated on the fringe of the fringe, self-releasing over a hundred albums all flecked with his distinctive vision. We can’t tell you what he’s planning, but rest assured it’s going to be a memorable one.

Tickets are available in advance and on the door from 7.30pm, plus we’ll be screening ‘Kooken’ starring Jandek in a one-act play from 8.15pm too, see you later!

This Friday we’re heading off to MOTH Club for another rare occurrence, The Flying Luttenbachers live in person and set to quake with no wave oddity. Having reformed recently (after a 12 year hiatus) at the behest of Thee Oh Sees, Weasel Walter (most recently teamed up with Lydia Lunch) and his wrecking crew of free-jazz punks will be bringing their explosive show to London for a one-off UK concert this Friday evening.

Keeping things playfully extreme and dissonant we’re very happy to have Mosquitoes opening this one too!

Then, Saturday night at The Lexington, New Zealand’s lo-fi punk legends Coolies are playing. Occupying the under-explored mid-point between the Dead Boys and the Shangri-La's, Coolies are the total banishment of the frown, just the best!

The Renderers (Flying Nun, Siltbreeze, Ba Da Bing) will also be playing this show too, with their fiendish pastoralia, swirling guitars and creeping melodies. So that’s New Zealand truly well represented! Fun Fun Funeral will treat us to their brightly coloured collages of song at the top of the show too, so come down early. Read on for all the detail, thanks…

KOOKEN: A ONE ACT PLAY (film)
Tuesday 2 April
Bush Hall, 310 Uxbridge Rd, Shepherd's Bush, London, W12 7LJ

JANDEK is the mysterious musical project of Corwood Industries, a record label that operates out of Houston, Texas. Since 1978, Jandek/Corwood Industries has independently released over 100 albums/DVDs of unusual, often emotionally dissolute folk, rock and blues songs without ever granting an interview or providing any biographical information. Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk, rock, punk, country, classical and blues music, at times using an open and unconventional chord structure. The name 'Jandek' is most commonly used to refer specifically to the project and not an individual.

THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS
MOSQUITOES

Friday 5 April
Moth Club, Old Trades Hall, Valette St, Hackney Central, E9 6NU
7.30pm | £10 | TICKETS

THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS are a touchstone punk jazz/brutal prog/no wave group who steadily deconstructed music and reality between 1991-2007 with their 16 releases and more than 400 performances around the world. Now, in 2019, the band is back with a new lineup, new music and a new full-length album out soon. In the interim, leader and composer Weasel Walter shifted his expansive energies into the world of free improvisation, recording dozens of albums and playing with hundreds of internationally known musicians, as well as touring the planet with Lydia Lunch, Cellular Chaos, XBXRX, Behold The Arctopus and many others. In 2017, The Flying Luttenbachers reformed and made a week long tour of France, performing an hour long set of classic material from the entire catalog. The latest incarnation of the band is based in New York City, featuring Tim Dahl (Ava Mendoza’s Unnatural Ways, GRID) on bass guitar, Matt Nelson (GRID, Elder Ones, etc.) on tenor saxophone, Brandon Seabrook on guitar and Weasel Walter on drums. For this April 2019 tour, Seabrook will be replaced by UK guitar strangler Alex Ward, who cut his teeth playing as a teen with legendary improviser Derek Bailey. The band was recently invited to open a run of three sold out New York shows headlined by The Oh Sees last October. The Flying Luttenbachers have recorded a brand new double LP entitled ‘Shattered Dimension’ which will be released on ugEXPLODE and Ty Segall’s imprint GOD? Records this April.

MOSQUITOES are a crypto, avant rock trio, who have captured the attention of more than a few heads over the past couple of years. After two self-released offerings, their latest EP on Ever/Never Records sealed the deal with its swarming mass of dubwise, no wave indebted confusion.

THE RENDERERS
FUN FUN FUNERAL

Saturday 6 April
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, London, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £8 | TICKETS

COOLIES have been blurting out random batches of high order avant garage spew since 1997. Sjionel Timu and Tina Pihema are the core of the band. Formed in the sprawl of South Auckland, New Zealand while they were still teens, Coolies were ostensibly a “punk” unit, but their sound was never doctrinaire. Through sheer weirdness and strength of vision, they created music that paralleled aspects of underground noise from the forests of Olympia Washington, the squats of West London, and the basements of Dunedin. Without resorting to formal revisionism, they’ve managed to take the basics of the early Rough Trade sound and smudge it with fingers dipped in the art-readymades of NZ’s underground pop groups and their own fevered experimentalism.

For a good chunk of the last decade, Stefan Neville (aka Pumice) was their drummer. This line-up cut a great LP, Master, for Chapter Music, and an even more dastardly EP, Punk Is Bread, for Epic Sweep. Most recently they presented, Kaka, gruntily produced by Neville on Feeding Tube Records. The tunes on Kaka were recorded in a couple of long jam sessions, then teased and smooshed into “shape” over the course of a year or so. The results, much like their live show are both propulsively fetching and utterly fried.

THE RENDERERS deal in ghostly folk songs, free-form freak outs, a head-spin of psychedelic hammering; anything goes. The New Zealand group have released nine albums since they formed in 1989 on labels as diverse as Flying Nun, Ba Da Bing, Siltbreeze and Merge. The Renderers feature legendary guitarist and songwriter Brian Crook and his wife, songwriter and artist Maryrose Crook, with a rotating group of members. The Crooks have been lucky enough to support a pile of great artists; Thurston Moore, at Zebulon, Los Angeles, 2018; Will Oldham, as his backing band, following which he subsequently released his own recording of A Dream of the Sea; Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan, and Wooden Wand's James Toth.
In The Sodium Light: “apocalypse and dread”, Magnet Magazine, the best of 2016, Essential Music) “They invite you right inside the emotional engine room, giving an opportunity to witness their raga-psychedelic psychosis up close.”  This is their first UK concert.

FUN FUN FUNERAL make brightly coloured songs like beautiful collages, always with a little glue overlapping. Bold songwriting, dense lo-fi arrangements, a dark and happy poem. With their specially crafted samples, scraped and scratched strings, high voices, percussions, the duo exhibits original pop songs of yesterday and tomorrow.
