EX-Cult London show onsale now!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

EX-CULT
Wednesday 3 May
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Road, Islington, N1 9JB

EX-CULT are a Memphis-based punk cyclone, releasing batches of bruising records and laying waste to everywhere they play. Chris Shaw lends a sneering, spitting toughness to the proceedings while the band flays riffs in loose, hairy mosh inducing menace behind him, touching on post-punk, psych sprawl, and early 80’s hardcore while remaining beholden to none. They have the power to convert even the most jaded and bored concertgoer into a sweaty mess in the pit. Having released two albums of adrenal-enhancing sluggers through Goner Records, last year saw Ex-Cult releasing ‘Negative Growth’ on In The Red. This collection of songs were conceived in Memphis and finalized in Los Angeles, with the help of family doctor Ty Segall. It was created in February 2016, when the band traded Memphis misery for a week of California sunshine. ‘Negative Growth’ is a nine-track nightmare, a death trip in the crystal ship and dedicated to fear and deception.

Cian Nugent & Mega Bog tomorrow, HEXA, Sacred Paws & Spinning Coin next week in London!

Hey everyone!

Thank you all for coming out to see Carla dal Forno last weekend, I hope you enjoyed those evocative dubby, songscapes as much as we did. It’s been a productive week for Upset The Rhythm, confirming new shows for OOIOO, Xiu Xiu and Rat Columns. If you like Japanese gamelan freakouts, ecstatic synth revelation or melancholic guitar pop we have you covered! We’ve also been working with Wolf Eyes on the lineup for next month’s show and can now confirm a special modular synth set from Mumdance and an explosive performance from Guttersnipe in support. All sounds great to me, let’s talk of things even more imminent.

Tomorrow we’re heading to The Islington for a concert with three incredible acts who all manage to shake new technicolour vibes out of music’s well worn raincoat. Cian Nugent will headline with his dazzling guitar fretwork and deeply resonant songwriting. Mega Bog will use her intuitive grasp of melody to traverse vast jazzy wonderlands, whilst Jess Williamson will open proceedings with her earthy, gothic folk. Tickets will cost you £7 on the door from 7.30pm, see you there!

Next week we also have two other events lining up for you! On Wednesday we’re very honoured to host HEXA; a duo made up of Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart and perceptive, Australian composer Lawrence English. They will be performing a specially commissioned soundtrack to David Lynch’s celebrated Factory Photographs. Taking place at The Forge in Camden the performance will be heavily immersive with projections and meticulous walls of sound. The endlessly inventive Graham Dunning will also be debuting a set of music based around his recent Aggregate composition.

Then on Friday we’re back at The Islington hosting Sacred Paws and Spinning Coin as they whirl around the UK on their joint headline tour. Expect cascading guitar pop galore with moments of afrobeat adventuring and post punk propulsion. No that’s what I call alliteration! Life Drawings will open the show too, full details on all three marvelous events can be found below. Read on for all particulars!

CIAN NUGENT
MEGA BOG
JESS WILLIAMSON
Saturday 11 February
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £7 |
http://www.wegottickets.com/event/382844

CIAN NUGENT is a mercurial guitar player and composer from Dublin, Ireland. Cian combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s-'70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school into a deeply personal style. New album, 'Night Fiction' is Cian Nugent's third album but his first taking on the role of singer-songwriter. Where his previous two albums: 2013's 'Born With The Caul' and 2011's 'Doubles' saw him exploring extended guitar based instrumentals with his band, The Cosmos, here he has reigned things in and focused his songwriting skills. Guitar fans, do not fear, there is still plenty of soloing and fingerpicking here. With 7 songs both solo and with his band, this album amalgamates everything Cian has done up to this point and reveals a more broad palate of influences, including The Velvet Underground, Richard Thompson, Television, Neil Young, John Lennon, Fred Neil, etc. Cian will perform this show as a trio showcasing lots of songs from his recent album, 'Night Fiction', out now on Woodsist.

MEGA BOG is the moniker of song-dribbler Erin Birgy, a Pacific Northwest rodeo child with an unmistakable laugh who was allegedly cursed upon conception. Over the past 8 years the band has stretched and wandered in a crescendo towards musical freedom. Now based in New York City, Birgy has adopted a band of wiggly jazz cartoons lifted from bands like Big Theif, iji, Big Eater, Causings, Hand Habits, Heatwarmer and others. Melodies always lush, erotic and free. Chords always dissonant, abstract and evolutionary. On their 2013 album Gone Banana, Bog settled into their homemade cloud of pop and jazz. Spreading the discs around the world over countless tours of dim zones. On their new bug, "Happy Together", Mega Bog leapfrogs further into the storm. Dizzying fusion of lounge, pop and bouncing rocks under poetic tantrums of love gone all the way wrong. Listen closer.

JESS WILLIAMSON’s Heart Song is a brave record. It explores the strength in vulnerability, the power in silence and empty space. The recordings bristle with energy and confidence while maintaining the intense intimacy Williamson is known for. Like the visceral desert landscape that inspires her, she knows when to let her vocals drift across the song, light like a tumbleweed, and when to, like the fiercest of Texas storms, unleash thunder and lightning with her band.

HEXA: FACTORY PHOTOGRAPHS
(Jamie Stewart & Lawrence English sonic response to David Lynch’s photography)
GRAHAM DUNNING (Aggregate performance)
Wednesday 15 February
The Forge, 3-7 Delancey St, Camden, London, NW1 7NL

HEXA is a project by Australian composer and artist Lawrence English and Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart exploring the physicality of sound and its abilities to infiltrate, abrade and occupy the body. Premiered at the David Lynch: Between Two Worlds retrospective at GOMA museum in Brisbane, Australia in April 2015, HEXA is a sonic response to Lynch’s Factory Photographs, a collection of images Lynch took of disused factories and the ruins of industry in the USA, Poland, Germany and the UK. Using the factory photographs as both a literal and metaphoric source, their performance draws root from the texture of Lynch’s images, the imagined and actual spaces, and the spectral histories contained within them. The effect is like “cascading low frequency pulses and tectonic plates of sound, suspended in cavernous cathedral-like spaces.” When asked recently about his decades’ long interest in photographing factories in various states of disuse, David Lynch remarked “I grew up in the north-west of America where there are no factories at all, just woods and farms. But my mother was from Brooklyn, so when I was little we used to go there and I got a taste for a certain kind of architecture and a feeling for machines and smoke and fear. To me, the ideal factory location has no real nature, except winter-dead black trees and oil-soaked earth. Time disappears when I'm shooting in a factory, it's really beautiful.” HEXA's album is out now on the Room40 label.

GRAHAM DUNNING is self-taught as an artist and musician having studied neither discipline academically. His live work explores sound as texture, timbre and something tactile, drawing on bedroom production, tinkering and recycling found objects. He also creates visual work, video and installations drawing on these themes. Graham has performed solo and in ensembles across the UK, and Europe, and exhibited installations in the UK, New Zealand and USA. He teaches Experimental Sound Art at the Mary Ward Centre in London and also gives various independent workshops. He has released through Entr’acte, Seagrave, Tombed Visions and more. For this show Graham will be performing a live set based around his recent solo composition ‘Aggregate’, based on a visual score, using the resonances of rooms within now-empty brutalist towerblock, Balfron Tower, alongside record crackle and analogue synth.

SPINNING COIN
SACRED PAWS
LIFE DRAWINGS
Friday 17 February
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £6 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/387070

SPINNING COIN are a fiercely independent rock group from Glasgow, something you could probably guess by listening to any of their songs. Their roots are all over the place but a simple love of playing together in their rehearsal space, and almost never turning down shows, has seen them coalesce a winning group sound in almost no time at all.  Drummer Chris White is part of the Winning Sperm Party collective, who document of a world of shadowy Glasgow music running all the way from the Glasgow Music Collective to Fuzzkill Records today. Where Spinning Coin branch out from things is in their cascading melodicism topped with some amazing shredding.  This connects into a slightly different Glasgow music scene more associated with Orange Juice, Teenage Fanclub, and of course The Pastels, who released their debut 7” through their Geographic Music imprint.  Both songs are home-recorded but show off the group’s easy flair for getting things to sound right without trying too hard, both are bittersweet, both are beautiful.
https://soundcloud.com/spinning-coin

SACRED PAWS are a fantastic, intuitive dream punk duo, comprising Eilidh of Golden Grrls and Skeleton Bob on drums, and Rachel from Trash Kit and Shopping on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky, infectious riffage. Rock Action are releasing the band’s debut album ‘Strike A Match’ on January 27th! This record follows their wonderful EP, and was produced by Tony Doogan and Sacred Paws at Castle Doom, Glasgow before being mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.

LIFE DRAWINGS are an un-googleable band of tip-top artrockers using lo-fi vocals, low key guitars, catchy bass bits, cheap keyboards, a drums and advanced admin for songs almost exclusively inspired by Country Teasers and The Fall.

Have a terrific weekend, thank you for reading!

OOIOO London show announced!

OK, from one great new show to another, it's beyond amazing to have Japan's OOIOO playing for us this April!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

OOIOO
Thursday 20 April
Kamio, 3 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3JL

OOIOO has always created a musical language all its own. Under the leadership of Yoshimi, also a founding member of Boredoms, the group has recorded six albums that have subverted expectations and warped perceptions of what constitutes pop and experimental music. Four years of work went into to making Gamel, their bold new album inspired by the Javanese style of gamelan and the first new music from Yoshimi in over five years. Gamelan is an ancient form that has inspired a great many composers and musicians over the past century, from Erik Satie and Claude Debussy to Mouse on Mars and Sun City Girls. The introduction of this traditional form transformed the group into a super tribe, side-stepping the road between the past and the future. Their focus is not to replicate these ancient styles, but to incorporate them into their consistently inventive, constantly shifting musical frameworks. They take their love of indigenous music into an entirely new dimension by freely weaving organic and electric tones into a vivid tapestry, employing their keen sense of color and texture.

While previous OOIOO albums have been largely studio creations, Gamel is the most accurate portrayal of the band’s overwhelming, forceful live presence they have released yet. Yoshimi leads her minimalistic rhythm ensemble by making quick, impulsive shifts in tone and attack, the group acting as one mind under her expert instruction. While the gamelan elements will be brand new to many listeners, the band offsets the bizarre with familiar, at times even nostalgic and childlike, melodies. Gamel is euphoric, bursting at the seams with an exhilarating frenzy that is universal yet uniquely their own. OOIOO’s music is reflected in the ear of the beholder, with each listener taking away something different.

Yoshimi began her music career in 1986 playing drums in UFO or Die with vocalist Eye, and later joined him in the revolutionary noise-pop group Boredoms. Her explosive drum performances captivated audiences and even inspired Wayne Coyne to name a now-famous Flaming Lips album in her honor. While the band’s tours of the United States are infrequent, they are as the New York Times has stated, transcendent.

Xiu Xiu back in London - new concert announced!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

XIU XIU
Monday 22 May
Kamio, 3 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3JL

XIU XIU is Shayna Dunkelman, Angela Seo and Jamie "Butch Jenny" Stewart. Starting in isolation in San Jose, California in 2002, Xiu Xiu has relentlessly toured all over the world since. Over the course of 15 7"s, five EPs, six collaboration albums and ten full lengths Xiu Xiu has never shied away from any topic that is honest and meaningful to them. Their songs are about gender dysphoria, suicide, loneliness, going insane, child soldiers, the tsunami in Indonesia, hideous sex, the Sanrio character Pandapple, abortion politics, incest, cats, queer life and the individual responsibility of U.S. military. Somehow within all of this, cuteness attempts to find a way to embrace death and horrible emotion. The music is drawn from British post punk and synth pop, modern Western classical, noise and experimental musics, Asian percussion musics, American folk, torch singers, house, techno and 1950s rock n roll. Xiu Xiu have been called "self flagellating", "harsh", "brutal", "shocking" and "perverse" but also "genius", "brilliant", "unique", "imaginative" and "luminous."

New album Forget will be released this February through Upset The Rhythm. The album was produced by John Congleton (Blondie, Sigur Ros), Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu's own Angela Seo. It features guest appearances by fabled minimalist composer Charlemagne Palestine, L.A. Banjee Ball superstar commentator Enyce Smith, Swans guitar virtuoso Kristof Hahn and legendary drag artist and personal hero of Xiu Xiu, Vaginal Davis.

Rat Columns heading for the Capital!

Very pleased to announce this new Rat Columns show for London!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

RAT COLUMNS
Wednesday 19 April
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Road, Islington, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £6 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/390472

Rat Columns is the mutable musical project of David West, an artist as prolific as he is diverse in his output. West is the driving force behind the groups Rank/Xerox, Liberation and Lace Curtain, he was also a member of Total Control, and most recently debuted a solo album proper. Whether its forward-facing punk or turning his hand to crafting sleek prisms of pop, West’s credentials check out. Rat Columns is no exception, always central to his vision and returned to many times since its inception in Perth almost a decade ago. Over the years the band has morphed and continued with an array of different friends from the USA and Australia, always finding David West dancing through the long shadows at its core. Working with many distinguished underground imprints including Blackest Ever Black, Adagio 830, Smart Guy Records and RIP Society, Rat Columns have left in their wake a trail of 7”s, EPs and two full length albums. Now a third album, entitled ‘Candle Power’ is cued for release through Upset The Rhythm. ‘Candle Power’ is packed full of chiming guitar pop, cutting in with moments of soul, disco and experimental plots.

Milky Wimpshake London show details!

Upset The Rhythm presents…

MILKY WIMPSHAKE
‘20th Anniversary Show!’
ROBERT SOTELO
THE PLAN
Saturday 4 March
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, London, N1 0XT

MILKY WIMPSHAKE are a passionate punk band from Newcastle Upon Tyne. The band formed in the early 1990s as part of the Slampt Underground organisation, a label and arts umbrella that supported many of the best UK DIY acts including The Yummy Fur, Pussycat Trash, Red Monkey and personal favourites Bette Davis & The Balconettes. Milky Wimpshake play love songs for punk rockers, protest tunes, covers of Northern Soul classics, and some new classics of their own. Characterised by Pete Dale’s wry lyrics and playful, direct guitar riffs, Milky Wimpshake are true stalwarts and legends of the underground and have recorded several ‘personal vs political’ albums in recent times for the mighty Fortuna Pop imprint. This show celebrates the 20th anniversary of their 100% brilliant debut album 'Bus Route To Your Heart', times flies!

ROBERT SOTELO intends to channel ‘Ram’-era McCartney without the chops, at once intimate and ambitiously layered pop music garnished in naive sincerity. Attempting to push beyond limited means, towards the absurd and abundant idea that recreating the feel and sound of The Beatles remains paramount an objective, the entire project rests on the uncertainty and confusion of mid-thirties existentialism and the exploration of the individual post-social life. Accompanied by a host of friends this initial performance will use the recorded compositions as a template on which Sotelo may attempt to draw out and utilise the individual merits of each musician to reconfigure and sensualise the jams. Sotelo’s astonishing debut album ‘Cusp’ will be released through Upset The Rhythm later this year.

THE PLAN harness unruly beats and stamp sweet vocal harmonies all over them. Post-punk in origins but evolving and revolving, its members have previously appeared in bands like Wetdog, Private Trousers and Vic Goddard's Subway Sect, and all live by the sea in sunny Southend.

VEXX - 'Wild Hunt' released, plus new and upcoming London shows!

 Afternoon all!

Good news tempered by some less-good news this week. Let’s remove the thorn from the side first, unfortunately our upcoming Deerhoof show at Village Underground has been postponed from February 6th to September 4th due to illness within the band. September's show will also take place at Village Underground. All tickets already purchased will remain valid for the new date, whilst any ticket holders who would prefer a refund are welcome to one too. Our thoughts go out to the band and wish them a speedy recovery. Here’s the band's official statement:

"We are terribly sorry to announce that because of serious pneumonia, we are not going to be able to travel to Europe, nor rock once we arrive. Prognosis is good, but for now please accept our apologies for not being able to make this tour that we were so looking forward to."

Right! On to the good news, well great news really! All of our prayers have been answered and we now have VEXX’s new mini-album Wild Hunt in stock. Yes, the manufacturing process did take a full epoch in the USA, however this allowed the world to catch up with a record we need more now than ever! Showcasing the group utterly consumed in the moment, Wild Hunt blazes with giddy abandon, raging mere heartbeats away from oblivion. We can’t recommend this record enough; it’s essentially in our essentials range! Greil Marcus has the last word on VEXX: "People don’t put this much of themselves into a piece of music just to show they can; to find out if they can, that’s the question." Check out our webshop here for more details!

Continuing with the theme of better and better news, we’ve confirmed a lot of new concerts this week that we’re excited about. On March 24th we’re very pleased to be launching Wolf Eyes’ brand new album entitled Undertow in London, with the radical vibes trio promising a set of nuclear audio affront. At the other end of the spectrum, acoustic-blues folksmen Daniel Bachman and Jake Xerxes Fussell have agreed to perform for us in May. That same month we also have announced a show for Washington D.C.’s Priests, who look set to light the world on fire this year. Then in June we’ve invited Memphis no-wavers Nots back to London, after they left all of us agog with ringing ears last year!

We’ll leave you with show blurbs for three of our upcoming shows this month. We have shows for Cian Nugent, Mega Bog, Jamie Stewart & Lawrence English, Graham Dunning, Spinning Coin and Sacred Paws all on the horizon. Also on the horizon is Carla dal Forno’s UK tour which commences in Brighton tonight. Our London show on Saturday night is already sold out but check out all of the other dates on the poster to see if you can make it along to one of those!
