Natural Snow Buildings and 'More Than A Witness' next week!

Good morning everyone!
Thanks so much to all of you who came out to see Brendan Fowler and The Pheromoans over the weekend, two special shows for us at Upset. It meant a lot to see so many of you in attendance. This week we’ve continued to keep the pace confirming new events for THE UV RACE, TY SEGALL and THE INTELLIGENCE, as well as an amazing MISSISSIPPI RECORDS film presentation and label showcase with MARISA ANDERSON, LORI GOLDSTON and DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER all performing!

Onto next week, we have two more opportunities to Upset The Rhythm. Monday sees us pitch up at Café OTO for a very rare appearance from France’s NATURAL SNOW BUIDINGS, their vivid drone-zones perfectly complimented by BEN NASH and STEREOCILIA in support. Then on Tuesday at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club we have a free screening of ‘POSITIVE FORCE: MORE THAN A WITNESS’, a feature length film by Robin Bell documenting the punk collective Positive Force DC, including electrifying live performances from Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Rites Of Spring, Scream, Beefeater, Nation of Ulysses etc. MARK ANDERSEN as a co-founder of Positive Force will be in attendance for a follow up Q & A too, exciting stuff I’m sure you’ll agree! Read on for everything and more…

NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS
BEN NASH
STEREOCILIA
Monday 23 June
Café OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £8 | TICKETS

NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS make make melodic, orchestrated, droning compositions with layers of guitars, chants, woodwinds, percussive bells, distortion and delay. This French duo are almost mythic in stature, their live shows proving an even more rare jewel than their records, which seem to briefly appear in limited numbers before instantly being devoured. The Brittany-based duo of Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte began creating music together after meeting at university in the late 90s, armed with little more than cello, guitar and voice. They began issuing tapes and CDRs in miniscule quantities, word slowly spreading through the exclamations of such devoted advocates as Digitalis and Time Lag.

Despite their minimal means, Natural Snow Buildings' music is never less than all-consuming, be it in their ethereal and windswept epics or their moments of close-mic'd vocal-and-guitar tenderness. Their releases always materialise on a grand scale, usually of two discs or more, always adorned by Mehdi and Solange's quasi-mystical artwork, like the tracks inside, each one seems like a fully realised dream. 2006's 'The Dance Of The Moon And The Sun' was perhaps a watershed, the duo finding their work hyperbolised online as a "monumental masterpiece", "the history of all things" and "perfection defined". Popol Vuh, Flying Saucer Attack, Dead C and Grouper comparisons abound and uniformly fail to do them justice. Soon began their relationship with Sheffield's Blackest Rainbow label and a series of releases that continue to sell out almost before the label takes delivery. Following their one and only UK tour from March 2012, Natural Snow Building will return to play for us at Cafe OTO later this month!

BEN NASH weaves a tapestry of sound that is as warm and welcoming as it is timeless in character. Vocal drones, singing bowls, motorik loops and epic guitars are all keen elements of his sound; capturing fleeting emotions within his electro-acoustic net. Nash's debut album 'The Seventh Goodbye' (on Aurora Borealis) was a collage of so many layers, patterns and textures, that it became as dazzling as the plummage of the finest peacock in paradise. Musical elements as diverse as folk, raga, Eastern percussion, drone, prog and noise coalesce on the record. Last year he released 'Oh Lordy Me (My Heart Is Wandering Again)' for Blackest Rainbow, a record which saw him drop his guitar and create an entire LP using an iPad with the Tenori-on app. Perhaps an unexpected turn, but then this year has been a pretty interesting one for Ben, returning to playing live after a long hiatus, surprising people by playing live in Sheffield and London for separate sets with Mehdi and Solange from Natural Snow Buildings as a trio. Recent album, 'The Mineral Victim' is available now also on Blackest Rainbow.

STEREOCILIA is London based guitarist and sound artist, John Scott. John uses his guitar and live looping techniques to create dense, rich layers of sound. Over the past 10 years John has performed all over the UK and Europe with various projects. He has also presented work for live radio broadcasts, and soundtracks to short films. He has twice performed in Rhys Chatham's guitar Orchestras. In 2012 at the Biennial festival in Liverpool cathedral performing ‘A Crimson Grail’, and more recently in San Francisco performing ‘A Secret Rose’ – Both for 100 guitars. John's Debut album 'Mumurations' is out now on his Echoic Memory imprint.

POSITIVE FORCE: MORE THAN A WITNESS
30 Years of Punk Politics In Action
(Film screening and Q & A with Mark Andersen)
Tuesday 24 June
Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, 44 Pollard Row, Bethnal Green, E2 6NB
8pm | FREE (donations welcomed)

You are cordially invited to our screening of 'More Than A Witness: 30 Years of Punk Politics In Action', a feature film about punk activist collective Positive Force DC, followed by a Q&A with PF co-founder Mark Andersen, co-author of Dance of Days.
Punk activist collective Positive Force DC emerged in 1985, rising from the creative, politically-charged ferment of DC punk’s Revolution Summer. Born in a dynamic local scene sparked by Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Rites of Spring, a handful of young activists also drew inspiration from UK anarcho-punks Crass as well as the band Seven Seconds and the original Positive Force affinity groups in Nevada to become one of the most long-lasting and influential exponents of punk politics.

This feature-length film by Robin Bell skillfully mixes rare archival footage - including electrifying live performances from Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Rites Of Spring, Scream, Beefeater, Nation of Ulysses, Crispus Attucks, Anti-Flag, and The Evens- with new interviews with Mark Andersen, Ian MacKaye, Penny Rimbaud of Crass, Kathleen Hanna, Allison Wolfe, Kevin Seconds, Jenny Toomey, Ted Leo, Dave Grohl, Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba and many more.

Covering a span of 30 years, More Than A Witness documents PF’s Reagan-era origins, the creation of its communal house, FBI harassment, and the rise of a vibrant underground that burst into the mainstream amidst controversy over both the means and the ends of the movement.

Through it all, Positive Force has persisted, remaining deeply rooted in their hometown, reaching out to those in need and building bridges between diverse communities, while regularly bringing punk protest to the front doors of the powers-that-be. Encompassing an ever-evolving cast of characters, the all-volunteer group has helped to nurture several generations of activists. In the best punk fashion, PF has applied creative DIY tactics and radical critiques to issues of homelessness, hunger, racism, corporate globalization, sexism, homophobia, war, gentrification, and animal/earth liberation, while struggling to constructively address conflicting dynamics and visions within the group itself.

Run time: 70 minutes.

Thanks for reading as usual!

MARISA ANDERSON
LORI GOLDSTON
DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER
Monday 15 September
Café OTO, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL

A once in a blue moon showcase that features a brand new live film/talk/slide show presentation by Eric Isaacson (Mississippi Records label boss and store owner) plus three live acts, all of whom have released records on the Mississippi Record label. Marisa plays emotive acoustic and electric whirlwinds, Lori wanders across borders with her atmospheric cello playing and DAOTW gloriously ruptures songs rooted in folk and country traditions.

Mississippi Records is modern day record phenomena, where there is never a dull moment and run with the care and passion that it is hard to suppress. Based in Portland, Oregon, USA it is a very local shop and a very outernational record label that has released unheralded lost classic's from all over the globe, collections of Harry Smith's anthologies as well as Alan Lomax's recordings, some truly amazing compilations that wear the compilers tastes loud and proud as well as some punky and quick off the shelf undercover albums that sell out pretty much as soon as they are made. Eric Isaacson who helped set up and runs a lot of the Mississippi Records labels and shop activities is also a wonderful, playful and sincere guide through the highs and lows of music history with a keen eye on the marvellous outsider types. For this tour he will introduce a brand new show film/talk presentation and his fellow travellers are three musicians with super strong ties to the label, all on the bill and performing.

'A Cosmic and Earthly History of Recorded Music according to Mississippi Records' is Eric Isaacson's new concoction, a combination of film, slide show, lecture and soundscape. It instinctively and idiosyncratically illustrates a entire history of recorded music (focusing on Eric's patch, North America!), from the birth of the first star in the universe all the way to the dark ages of the 1980's. The ultimate intention of this travelling exhibition is to give the audience a sense of wonder; that anything is possible and art is worth doing. Tonally, the presentation navigates into the outer reaches, bypassing academic stuffiness in favour of entertainment value and immediacy. All materials will be from Mississippi Records vast and seldom seen archive of film, music and art.

This whirlwind 90 minute sound and visual representation will attempt to sum up as many important points in the evolution of recorded music that can be done in such a short amount of time. Subjects hit upon include:

* The cosmic patterns that resemble music generated by stars being born and dying.

* The musical patterns in the natural world that work on the same principals as music.

* The untold early history of recording technology. Including tales of Archeoacoustic technology that allows us to hear recordings from 2,000 years or more ago, cat pianos, the phonautogram which reproduces sounds from dust and much more.

* The rise of the blues, rock and roll, and other revolutionary American music forms and their subsequent destruction by the powers that be.

* 45 minutes of incredibly vibrant archival footage of some some the greatest musicians on Earth (as well as some novelties) including Bo Diddley, Rosetta Tharpe, The Collins Kids, Gary Davis, and the Staple Singers.

MARISA ANDERSON is a composer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist from Portland, Oregon who works both solo and in beautiful tandem. Inspired by Delta blues, West African guitar, country and western radio from the 60s and 70s, gospel, noise, rhythms, cycles, mortality, and praise. Featuring an impressive 12 improvisations for guitar and lap steel Marisa has released two albums on Mississippi. In the past two years, Anderson’s music has landed her slots with artists including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Devil Makes 3 and Sharon Van Etten.

LORI GOLDSTON is a cellist, based in Seattle, with an emotional and magic touch. Classically trained and rigorously de-trained, possessor of a restless, semi-feral spirit, Lori Goldston is a cellist, composer, improvisor, producer, writer and teacher . Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic is full, textured, committed and original. She wanders recklessly across borders that separate genre, discipline, time and geography, performing in clubs, cafes, galleries, arenas, concert halls, sheds, ceremonies, barbecues, and sanctuaries. Collaborations famously include being thrown in the dark end with Nirvana and enjoying the songs of David Byrne and Cat Power. Lori also co-founded Black Cat Orchestra and has been key to Earth live shows. She has received commissions to do live scores for several silent films.

DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER is a solo project from Brian Mumform, performing songs rooted in folk and country traditions, though ruptured, complicated, and complimented with broken textures of feedback, drones, tape hiss, and homemade oscillators. Chance elements and candlelight sensitive instruments destabilize customary electro-amplified-tightness & introduce improvisation to the recitation of these songs.  Brian also plays in Sun Foot, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Deep Fried Boogie Band, & Jewelry Rash. He runs a small cassette & CDR label called Musical Impressions. Brian has collaborated with TJO, Chris Johanson, John Wiese, Makino Takashi, John Butcher, Gino Robair, Fred Lonberg-Holm,  Vic Chesnutt, Pete Swanson, and many others.

The Pheromoans NEW ALBUM and RELEASE PARTY, plus BRENDAN FOWLER in London on Sunday

Good Wednesday!
This week we released a new album by THE PHEROMOANS called Hearts Of Gold. It’s a tour de force of sideline missives, unbridled rock and melancholic voids that feels like new territory for the band. Norman Records described it perfectly as “ eerie, listless, ramshackle, pastoral, kraut-flecked GENIUS ”. To celebrate, we’re having a record launch this Friday at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club where THE PHEROMOANS will be joined by KEEL HER, SAUNA YOUTH, TOM JAMES SCOTT and EMOTIONAL for a right royal knees up with HALO HALO DJing too, and all for a fiver! Read on for all you need to know along with our listing for this Sunday’s one off concert for BRENDAN FOWLER (aka BARR), which also sees the mesmerising ASHLEY PAUL performing at Power Lunches too! Today, we’re also announcing new shows for NO BALLS (Drajan Bryngelsson and Dan Råberg from BRAINBOMBS), TORTURING NURSE, JULIE BYRNE and a free screening and Q & A for Positive Force: More Than A Witness, a feature length film by Robin Bell documenting the punk collective Positive Force DC, including electrifying live performances from Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Rites Of Spring, Scream, Beefeater, Nation of Ulysses etc.
Thanks for reading, enjoy the words…

THE PHEROMOANS are a six-piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The Pheromoans write songs for the end of the queue, songs that prowl the periphery, songs that stand up on the bus and stare out through the window, blasted through with brilliant sprawling sunshine. Over the last six years the band have released a slew of records, including numerous EPs, 7"s, mini-albums and LPs through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press, Clan Destine and their own imprint Savoury Days. These recordings largely focused on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like path throughout the songs.

New album, Hearts Of Gold, is the band’s sixth album proper, following on from 2012’s well received ‘Does This Guy Stack Up?’, also released by Upset The Rhythm. It’s with eyes open that ‘Hearts Of Gold’ strides forward, casting its net across a diverse array of topics, including short distance holidays, ageing trendsetters, parenthood, functioning alcoholism and Hugh Laurie’s blues career. Through all the mess and melody, through the trivial and the achingly true there’s a grander point to be made, coming slowly into focus, the point of it all and with this album The Pheromoans do everything but spell it out. 'Hearts Of Gold' will be released through Upset The Rhythm on June 9th.
http://thepheromoans.blogspot.co.uk/
KEEL HER is Rose Keeler-Schäffeler, an alien-obsessed bedroom musician with a prolific workrate to show up every studio-dithering band as heel-dragging slackers. The 18 tracks collected on her debut for Critical Heights are a mere sample of the hundreds the Brighton artist has posted online in recent years, a patchwork of lo-fi hits, throwaway doodles and flashes of studio inspiration. Its mixtape nature means it isn’t yet the concise album Keel Her might one day produce, but the breezy likes of ‘Go’, ‘Riot Girl’ and ‘Don’t Look At Me’ are tuneful pop pastiches in the vein of Dum Dum Girls and Ariel Pink. Lightening her introverted tendencies with an offbeat humour, ‘Keel Her’ is sustained by a ‘first thought, best thought’ attitude that feels truly punk. http://keelher.bandcamp.com/
SAUNA YOUTH are an evolving band of young future humans making truly irregular punk not quite comparable to anything else. The band, attracted to the possibilities apparent within a DIY philosophy have been self-recording and self-releasing their own music since 2010, creating a number of seven inches, splits and cassettes. Artistic affinities are pledged to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Pissed Jeans and The Intelligence, but as Kurt Cobain once asked "Why can't we be both Black Sabbath and The Beatles?", Sauna Youth consistently and urgently pose the question, 'Why can't we be both The Ramones and Steve Reich?'. Sauna Youth's debut album, 'Dreamlands' was released in 2012 through Gringo Records and Faux Discx, whilst their most recent 7" 'False Jesii Pt. II' came out last year through Static Shock Records. http://lostinidea.blogspot.co.uk/
TOM JAMES SCOTT is a classically trained guitarist and a mainstay of the improvising collective CYRK. Tom's influences stretch far and wide, touching upon aspects of traditional music, improvisation, vocal music, composition, and field recording to name but a few. Tom's previous albums for Bo' Weavil, were both guitar based with added piano, distilled through a minimalist mind set to create some of the most beautiful elemental melodic lines that take the listener on a journey of meditative contemplation. 'Drape' is Tom's new Limited LP of solo piano pieces. Strings of single notes become humming, shadowy resonances within the body of the instrument, echoing into frequent pause and fragmentation. https://soundcloud.com/tomjamesscott
EMOTIONAL are a London based electronic/experimental pop duo, providing the after-hours entertainment when The Pheromoans have finished playing. The true nexus of the party! https://soundcloud.com/emotionalmusic-1

\\\\\ SUNDAY /////

BRENDAN FOWLER (BARR)
ASHLEY PAUL
Sunday 15 June
Power Lunches, 446 Kingsland road, Dalston, E8 4AE
6pm | £6 | TICKETS

BRENDAN FOWLER is a visual artist, a free-jazz percussionist and a performer on the DIY underground music circuit, under the name BARR. BARR is a project in which he half-sings over half-tunes, creating a set of confessional songs that challenge the listener's preconceptions of what's music and what's spoken word. Holding articulate dialogues with himself, the listener and various third parties, Brendan's words are backed by deceptively simple, yet emotionally disarming melodies, formed from a sparse arrangement of bass, drums, piano and sometimes xylophone. This minimal aesthetic is the perfect platform for candid and exploratory songs about love, absence, realisation and experience. After his promising debut album 'Beyond Reinforced Jewel Case', Brendan followed this up with what seems like a classic album now called 'Summary' on Upset The Rhythm. Whether via the dramatic simplicity of the music or the raw and expressive lyrics, it is an album that speaks to everyone, a body and a record of us all. After touring the album in the US and Europe to increasing success, Brendan suddenly leaped over to the art world and began a new journey. In his signature works, Fowler combines up to four framed pictures, “crashing” them together. In this way, he mixes photography, sculpture, and performance. Largely autobiographical, the three-dimensional pictures combine snapshots of his friends, arrangements of flowers, the artist’s studio, mirrors, and screens in restructured narratives. Tate Modern have invited him over to do a talk about the future of photographic art on June 14th called 'Beyond The Frame' and whilst he's in London we've convinced him to play this one-off, special show at Power Lunches, lucky us!
ASHLEY PAUL creates music by coalescing her instruments, that can include saxophone, clarinet, guitar, bells and percussion, as well as her vocals, into new and beguiling areas of listening and perceiving. She forms delicate and brittle sounds that lend her intensely intuitive songs free forming, introverted melodies, caustic tones and subtle dynamics that bear close attention. Recent recorded releases find Ashley’s voice entering more and more into this unique audio world and song-cycles start to appear and disappear before your ears and eyes in a dreamlike fashion or sound vision. The listener is allowed to explore with a sense of wonder concerning where this is all coming from, so creating a special focus, as shards of voices manifest themselves against beautiful and simple musical forms and acoustic experimentation. Ashley lives in New York, USA and has performed or recorded with Phill Niblock, Loren Connors, Aki Onda, C. Spencer Yeh, Anthony Coleman, Joe Maneri, Joe Morris, Seijiro Murayama, Greg Kelley, Bill Nace and Eli Keszler. She has appeared on such labels as REL, PAN, ESP-DISK, Tzadik and her own imprint Wagtail.
