GUERILLA TOSS were birthed from
the depths of the sweaty basements of Boston, Massachusetts and are nowadays
considered to be a New England underground staple by the freaks and weirdos
that inhabit the region. The band have churned out numerous cassettes, records,
and CDs in the past two years on on labels such as Feeding Tube Records, John
Zorn’s Tzadik, Sophomore Lounge, and Digitalis Ltd. By touring relentlessly and
providing their audience with an unforgettably intense live show that demands,
and encourages, ravaging physical body movement of the listener,
Guerilla Toss have quickly garnered a cult following. Their newest record, 'Gay
Disco' (released by NNA Tapes), is an album that draws influence from new wave
and no wave dance music, extreme dementia, drug problems, and absurdist humor.
Kassie Carlson’s ferocious vocals run the gamut of the human voice, blasting with jet engine shrieking and boiling over with urgency, while at the same time presenting a deranged and direct spoken narrative with surreal conversational lyrics. Peter Negroponte’s full force drumming spews forth alongside her like a tentacled beast, whilst guitarists Simon Hanes and Arian Shafiee duel to the death with angular and jagged riffs. The glue that binds is Ian Kovac’s synth work, which adds a healthy dose hyperactive danceability and electronic flourishing that contributes to the album’s overall doped-up disco flavor. As messy as it sounds, it all lends itself to Guerilla Toss' ability to shape-shift seamlessly between hardcore rawness, jazzy meanderings, and squealing noise rock. Guerilla Toss succeeds in using the power of dissonance, aggression, and disorientation to derail the dancefloor harnassing the essence of a high-energy live band in its loudest, rawest embodiment to date. Guerilla Toss succeed in using the power of dissonance, aggression, and disorientation to derail the dancefloor, whilst maintaining high-energy spectacle in its loudest, rawest embodiment to date.

USA NAILS do drawn out psychedelic punk with nods to the likes of Neu, The Stooges, and Swans. They feature current and ex-members of Kong, Silent Front and WhoresX3. Their debut album "Sonic Moist", is out on tape and vinyl in November on a bunch of European DIY labels (Unwork, I Hate My Records, Bigoût and Smalltown America).

DIYOA (dee-oh-ah) is a one man band from Rochester, Kent. Towing the line between improvisation and structure, DIYOA uses a blend of guitar and electronics to create an eclectic set that ranges from loose, free flowing soundscapes, to riff driven pop.

TRASH KIT - 'Confidence'
Album Launch!!!

TRASH KIT have a wild feel for
melody, writing songs that pull at the reins with a spontaneous charm. Having
formed the band in 2009, Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray have since
become the glowing core of London’s DIY underground. Their music is primal yet
thoughtful, affirming yet sincere, drawing on the potential of post-punk and
the naturalism of an internal folk music. Although Trash Kit have their
forebears in bands like X-Ray Spex, The Ex and The Raincoats, their sound is
very much their own take on facing forwards. Galloping polyrhythms, overlapping
sung-spoke lyrics and entwining guitars are all drawn together into a taut
unity, sounding willfully alive. Both Rachels tangle their vocals with each
other whilst expressive drumbeats and restless guitar flurries provide the
rhythmic drive. Aggs’ guitar playing is as much informed by African fingerstyle
patterns as the percussive attitude of various no wave shredders. Horwood
approaches her drumkit with an untamable freedom, pushing it into the realm of
a vivid lead instrument. Trash Kit's music is full of pauses, woven silence and
punctuation too and this is where Ros Murray and her resonant, soulful bass
work finds a perfect home.
As a follow up to their exuberant debut album, ‘Confidence’ sticks with the “play it all live” pluck we’ve come to expect from Trash Kit. There’s a minimal bent, a lyrical directness, an unadorned ethic that all evokes the sense that the song is being written at the same time as it’s performed. Yet whilst the first album at times felt too fleeting, its succinct songs flashing by so fast, ‘Confidence’ is startlingly more assured, allowing ideas to develop, conclusions to be gathered. Tracks like ‘Hair’, ‘Skin’ and ‘Boredom’ embrace dynamics like never before. Their clatter and chime are complimented through subtler passages of introspection and the occasional noisy breakdown, with snare and cymbals approaching roar. Ros is joined by her previous bandmate Verity Susman (of Electrelane) on a few tracks including the adventurous ‘Shyness’ and lead single ‘Medicine’, lending some fluently inventive saxophone flourishes. It all adds to the heady, sensation of free-falling through the album. A feeling that the horizon has become broader. ‘Confidence’ will be released by Upset The Rhythm on December 1st.

ANA DA SILVA is a founding member of the pioneering female punk band The Raincoats. Ana has continually worked on music, in some shape or form, since the group disbanded in 1984. Soon after the release of The Raincoats’ final album album, ‘Moving’, Da Silva collaborated with This Heat drummer Charles Hayward on a project called Roseland; they recorded a few demos together, but the duo faltered after that. She also wrote music for choreographer Gaby Agis' productions, but spent much of the '80s and early '90s painting and working in an antique shop. The Raincoats' reunion spurred Da Silva and the rest of the group to write new songs, resulting in the band's fifth album, 1996's ‘Looking in the Shadows’. Da Silva resurfaced in 2005 with her solo record ‘Lighthouse’, a largely electronic collection of songs that she wrote, recorded, and produced herself for Chicks On Speed records.

ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO makes trans-utopian world music for a world that exists in fever dreams and hallucinations. Using performance and visual art, he traverses the nameless territories held between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock and roll. He clarified his eccentric brew of ecstatic lunacy and prophetic madness during his 15 year tour-of-duty with Olympia’s Old Time Relijun. De Dionyso’s most recent project, Malaikat dan Singa, is a trance-punk outfit featuring bass clarinet, guitars, multiple drummers and his trademark wild vocals (multi-spectral harmonic throatsinging combined with grunts, yelps, and barks) often sung in Indonesian. Pushing the envelope between musicality and pure energy, between ecstacy and lunacy, he enwraps rooms with a deeply resonant sound.

AS ONDAS are a band with fresh ideas, featuring members of Dog Legs, Shopping and Wachi Wachi they start their race with a sprint. With a spartan drum, bass and guitar lineup, As Ondas deliver up a delirious, chorus-drenched prom punk alongside the occasional post punk meditation.

Ed Schrader's Music Beat tomorrow and Guerilla Toss later this month!
-->
Hello Sunday
afternoon!
Huge thank
yous to everyone who helped make this last week such a success for Upset The
Rhythm. Not only did we have the wonderful RODION
G.A. make his eccentric UK debut, we put on our biggest show yet with FUTURE ISLANDS at Shepherd’s Bush
Empire and released a new album by one of our all time favourite bands, DEERHOOF. It doesn’t get better than
that! We really appreciate you buying records and tickets for everything we
bombard you with, it means a lot, it really does! This week we have two more
events planned for you, starting with tomorrow’s ED SCHRADER’S MUSIC BEAT show, which is a steal at only £5 entry
(tickets on the door too) and sees SEX
HANDS and DOG CHOCOLATE
supporting too. If you’re a fan of melodic, minimal punk in all its most
unhinged states then head down to the Lexington tomorrow evening, you won’t be
disappointed. Our other show takes place on Wednesday for TY SEGALL and is already sold out. We won’t have any tickets
available on the door unfortunately, but for all of you already coming, live
music will start around 8.20pm with Ty’s tour buddies MOVIE STAR JUNKIES. If that wasn’t already enough to digest we’re
also including below our full show listing for GUERILLA TOSS at the end of this month too, along with a newly
announced concert for RICHARD DAWSON
early next year. Here cometh the words…

ED SCHRADER'S MUSIC BEAT are Ed Schrader and
Devlin Rice - a minimalist punk duo from the fair city of Baltimore, Maryland.
In the beginning there was only Ed: a man unhinged, channelling to the world a
sacred message in the form of song. His only divining instruments: a single
floor tom, one light, and a commanding baritone. He's a master songsmith who
has reduced pop and punk to their most basic building blocks. Ed was soon joined
by Devlin on bass, who proved to be an acute match for encapsulating the
space-time from whence they came. Their union
quickly brought about the release of their 2012 debut album 'Jazz Mind' through
Upset The Rhythm (and Load Records in the US), which The Wire magazine said
recalled "the percussion-heavy chants of Liars", with Ed
"affecting a mournful Arthur Russell tone on the a cappella songs"
whilst "roaring like Rollins" on the album's faster numbers. Since
then, Ed Schrader's Music Beat have toured frequently in North America and
Europe, notably alongside their friends Dan Deacon and Future Islands, as well
as hardcore luminaries Ceremony. New album, 'Party Jail' picks up where 'Jazz
Mind' left off, adding a thoughtfully crafted, minimal pop vibe to their
already terse punk sound. As a follow-up it features songs that are equally
loud and destructive, pensive and strangely haunting.

SEX HANDS were formed by three childhood friends from the North Wales coast. After relocating to Manchester, Alex, Dylan and Edwin played their first show in 2011 on the Comfortable on a Tightrope stage at SFTOC, Salford. A month later Joe Logan of Waiters was recruited for his sweet bassy licks and amazing posture. From then on the band has been on a rock 'n' roll whirlwind, playing shows with the likes of Trumans Water one night and The Babies the next. After their previous releases which include a split 7" with Daily Life (on the Icecapades label, which features artwork by Sex Hands own Alex Humphreys and Manchester artist Lucy Jones) as well as the self released mini album, 'Season One (Giant Hell)', 'PLEH!' is Sex Hands proper-real-life-hi-fi-fully-rockin'-full-length record on Faux Discx/Negative Space. With artwork by Manchester based artist Mike Redmond that compliments the bands rough around the edges, scorched pop rock, 'PLEH!' is 13 tracks of non-stop melody mashed fun time hug and roll hits. Sex Hands are not a garage pop band, they have never practiced in a garage. They never practice.
http://fauxdiscx.bandcamp.com/album/pleh
DOG CHOCOLATE are an elasticated, punk quartet based on the principles of self-propulsion and having too much fun. Jono plays a couple of drums, Matthew plays a guitar and a load of pedals, Rob plays another guitar and sings selected songs whilst Andrew sings most the songs and plays impressionistic blasts of keyboard when he’s not. Having been active in a number of other bands including Yeborobo, Limn, Gasp! Cracking Eggs, Tea And Toast Band and Moulsecoomb Sword Gang, all four members are also frantic doodlers and illustrators. This over-spill of creativity can be seen on their recent split LP on UTR, entitled ‘Or’, which sees the band sprint through ten tracks of barely-controlled chaotic glee. Never dwelling for long, Dog Chocolate treat us to songs about pregnancy, poisoned eyes, public transport and cakes. Their observational, often candid lyrics match their nonsensical attitude to their music too, which tumbles and chases pitchshifted guitars through thick forests of feedback and blasting drums.

RODION G.A. tomorrow and ED SCHRADER'S MUSIC BEAT next Monday!
Hello there
again!
Just a quick
reminder that tomorrow we have Romanian psych legend RODION G.A. playing for us at Cafe OTO. Rodion is a synth
visionary, in the mid-70s he started creating a dense, colourful mountain of
sound with his banks of tape recorders, handmade electronics and drum machines.
After walking away from performing live in 1987 it wasn’t until 2012 that the
world got its first chance to rediscover his incredible music with the timely
release of ‘The Lost Tapes’ on Strut
Records. Now we’re lucky enough to be hosting his first ever London show as a
UK exclusive and its set to realign all minds. In support we have some
echo-laden analogue pop from BAMBOO
and ROB SHUTTZ’s looped experiments.
Live music will start around 8.30pm and we will have some tickets on the door. This
following Thursday also sees us have FUTURE
ISLANDS playing a sold out show at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, this show
will run early so bear in mind CELEBRATION
will be kicking things off around 7.45pm. Also, playing on Thursday are ED SCHRADER’S MUSIC BEAT who we also
have playing a Lexington headline show on November 10th with SEX HANDS and DOG CHOCOLATE, all for just £5! Read on for more info on all of
that below…

RODION G.A. is without doubt, one of music’s
best-kept secrets. That’s despite being around for nearly forty years. The
story begins when a musical visionary decided to form his own band in Romania
four decades ago. It was between 1975 and 1976, when the Rodion G.A. story
begins. That’s when Rodion Rosca formed the band that bore his name. This
would be no ordinary band, far from it. Rodion G.A. would become one of the
most innovative bands in Romanian musical history. In 1975, Rodion joined with
Gicu Farcas and Adrian Caparu to complete the lineup of Rodion G.A. By
1975, Rodion had amassed an eclectic selection of equipment and established a
reputation as a D.I.Y. tech wizard. He created his own unique way of creating
music on reel-to-reel tape recorders, using the various tape machines to
multitrack. His nascent studio included several Tesia tape recorders, drum
machines, phasers, flangers and fuzz pedals. Then there were a toy Casio VL
Tone and a Soviet made Faemi organ. Like the music Rodion G.A. were making, the
equipment they were using was just as leftfield and eclectic.
Sadly, Rodion G.A.‘s career lasted just over ten years. In 1987, after the death of his mother, Rodion Rosca walked away from music. For the next twenty-five years, nothing was heard of this charismatic, enigmatic and mercurial musician. Then Luca Sorin, a blogger and filmmaker became interested in the mythology that surrounds Rodion. Luca discovered a handful of tracks by Rodion and footage of their 1980 NYE concert. He posted this online. This came to the attention of Future Nuggets. They’re a collective of musicians and producers who are determined to preserve Romania’s musical heritage. Then in 2012, Rodion G.A. made his comeback, after twenty-five years away from music. Then a year later, Rodion G.A. released his debut album 'The Lost Tapes', on Strut Records to acres of praise and press attention. Since then, Rodion G.A.’s comeback has continued apace.
Earlier this year, another Rodion G.A. release hit the shops. This was none other than Rodion G.A.‘s soundtrack 'Delta Space Mission' released on Record Store Day 2014. Fans worldwide were determined to get a copy of this previously unreleased musical Magnus Opus. The lucky ones weren’t disappointed. Now Rodion G.A. have decided to embark on their first European tour and will be making their debut London performance for us at Cafe OTO on bonfire night. Suitably exciting I'm sure you'll agree and no need for any "there will be fireworks" punnery as that is a given!

BAMBOO is a new collaboration between Rachel Horwood of Trash Kit/Halo Halo and Nick Carlisle of Peepholes/Don't Argue. Based in Brighton and London respectively, Nick's reverberating synths and 808 rhythms combine with Rachel's looped and octave-pedalled Asian banjo and crystalline vocals to create a mystic folk pop soundtrack to a Studio Ghibli yet to be made.
https://www.facebook.com/bamboosongs
ROB SHUTTZ plays a solo, hacked bass, looped type of music. Elements of shoegaze, folk, experimental and others are present. His portfolio piece 'Looming' represents, in purpose and theme, a personal checkpoint. It is a culmination of years of inaccurate appropriation and the most complete piece he has donated to the worldwide spectrum. A peek at a future lurking around the corner. From its ugly, trudging bass-line and lamenting mantra, a timid yet hopeful melody grows into a defiant crescendo. The accompanying video is an exact copy of the song's live structure, and shows a little of the way he make these sounds. Part 1 of a collection of sounds, currently recording, more soon.
