Behaviour Red!

Joy of joys! Happy to declare Upset The Rhythm will be working with the inimitable Bertie Marshall on a compilation later this autumn entitled ‘Exhibit’. This will gather together the jewels & gems of his Behaviour Red project over the years. A brand new interview with Bertie just appeared in GQ mentioning the release and his forthcoming memoir too, hip hip:

Compact discs for The Green Child!

Spring has sprung! The Green Child’s self-titled debut album is released today for the first time on CD, accompanied by the duo’s new record ‘Shimmering Basset’ too. Both albums on the same CD, mega-deal bonus time!

Available from our webshop here: https://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com … and all the best record shops now.

THE GREEN CHILD is the once long-distance, now based in the same house recording project of Raven Mahon (furniture maker and former member of Grass Widow) and Mikey Young (recording engineer and band member of Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). The duo draw their spectral pop sound from an illusory past as much as they advance into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and vintage drum machines underpin most of The Green Child’s upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven's calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o'-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie electronic concoctions.

Live from 8pm: https://facebook.com/events/468155567684222

Welcome all to this outstanding streamed concert in celebration of Nightshift’s new album ‘Zöe’, out Feb 26th through Trouble In Mind. This digital gig was filmed and edited by Nightshift, put together remotely using footage from last year, spliced with new bits.

The band that became Nightshift formed in 2019 in the ecosystem of Glasgow's current indie scene. The city's fertile & creative group of musicians have been committed to pushing the boundaries of and blurring the lines between DIY, punk, experimentalism and indie pop for decades now. Nightshift fit right in, featuring members from current indie stalwarts Spinning Coin, 2 Ply and Robert Sotelo. The band was formed by David Campbell (guitar), Andrew Doig (bass), Eothen Stearn (keyboards/vocals) & Chris White (drums) as a "No Wave/No New York/early Sonic Youth/This Heat-esque" group, but their sound quickly evolved once guitarist/vocalist/clarinetist Georgia Harris joined (as the band was writing ‘Zöe’). Nightshift self-released a full-length cassette on CUSP Recordings in early 2020, laying the foundation of their sound; hypnotic, melodic, understated indie post-punk with hooks that stick around long after you've heard them.

Unlike the band's previous album, the songs on ‘Zöe’ weren't conceived live in the band's practice space, but rather pieced together and recorded remotely during quarantine lockdown. The isolation actually allowed for an openness and creativity to flow and many of the songs took on radically different forms from when they were originally envisioned. Vocalist & primary lyricist Eothen Stearn says "The process of writing these songs separately during lockdown was a kind of exquisite corpse - I liked this gesticulation of reaching out to one another and responding. Building up the next layer and passing it on." Stearn says "poetic restraints" to writing & Eno & Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies concepts were on their mind when composing the words to the songs, and highlights the influence of author Rosi Bradiotti's book ‘The Posthuman’. ‘Zöe’ kicks off with ‘Piece Together’, a mesmeric song anchored by the band's chanted vocals and serpentine guitar licks. ‘Spraypaint the Bridge’ showcases Harris' clarinet in an unexpected & delightful melodic shift during the song's anti-chorus. Elsewhere tunes like the swooning ‘Infinity Winner’ and  ‘Outta Space’s minimalist, slinky rhythm swirl in a late-night vibe, while ‘Make Kin’ ruminates on "Looking to kinship as a way of engaging with entangled environmental and reproductive issues... how a band is a bond" and lurches forward with kinetic guitar strangling & staccato rhythmic percussion from White & Doig. ‘Power Cut’ is the album's centerpiece, luring the listener into involuntary movement with its waves of harmonies, synth drones and metronomic pulse, until they all come crashing down in the song's dissonant midsection.

The band acknowledges the whiffs of nostalgia prevalent in ‘Zöe’s songs, and the nature of writing & recording the album is soaked in the self-work, reflection & reevaluations involved not only personally but creatively in each member's lives. Consequently, ‘Zöe’ has become a collection of sketches of hope, growth, awareness of the power of the world & the power of self and possibility.

Buffet Lunch - 'The Power of Rocks' LP announced!

Power up! Our first new release of 2021 will be a debut album of odd-pop from Scottish group Buffet Lunch! Punchy, often thoughtful and pleasingly surreal at times ‘The Power of Rocks’ is an album filled with imagery and humour, packed with zestful tunes and lyrical weight too. Buffet Lunch’s songs are vigorous excursions, meandering into clattersome terrain as often as hiking up into the breezy, melodious foothills. The desire to lead the listener along on a curious tale helps tie things together. This is a debut LP of wide-ranging and personal themes, from irritation with out of touch politicians, to love letters to seaside living, to even the frailty and confusion of old age. No stone left unturned, if you pardon the pun. ‘Red Apple Happiness’ is the first single taken from the album, it’s befuddlingly magnificent video (made by Iain McCall) just premiered on For The Rabbits!

‘The Power of Rocks’ is available to pre-order now through our online shop on limited 180g orange vinyl.

YIKES, well that all went T.I.T.S. up.

THE WORLD in lockdown and MONOTONY has meant that all plans have gone KAPUTT. Nothing much to do other than to MUNCH MUNCH  on lockdown snacks and dream of FUTURE ISLAND travels.

There have been NO lockdown BABIES to report on although my NAKED ROOMMATE did end up with a SOILED MATRESS AND THE SPRINGS - less said the better!

At least Upset the Rhythm have kept us entertained with a VINTAGE CROP of new bands and music.

So, as we reach this festive time PLEASE remember your HYGIENE, don't feed the DOG CHOCOLATE, put on your festive GOWNS and HALO HALOs and head to CLECKHUDDERSFAX you LUCKY DRAGONS!

2020 wrap + Xmas competition!

Glad tidings!

I hope you’re becoming suitably festive now! Well, 2020 certainly had its challenges, but somehow in the midst of it all Upset The Rhythm still managed to release eight records this year! We are immeasurably proud to have eased some of the tedium/stress of 2020 with remarkable new music from Handle, Es, Primo!, Vintage Crop, Naked Roommate, Normil Hawaiians, Sleeper & Snake and The Green Child!

We wanted to thank you all so much for supporting us as a label throughout the year, it really has meant the world to us.

To celebrate this level of head-down steadfastness we wanted to host a jovial competition to say well done on getting through this indifferent year. So, for your chance of winning copies of all eight UTR 2020 releases just tell us your favourite/funniest Xmas-pun relating to any of the artists on Upset The Rhythm as a label or who’ve graced our stage since 2003. We're thinking of something of the overwhelming calibre of: Primo! Ho! Ho!, Gabriel Pink, Good King Wenc-ES-las etc.

Make us laugh the most and you will win. Send us over your best shot here:

upset_the_rhythm@yahoo.com

The winner will be announced on Monday 21st December on our socials.
Good luck!

Also, this week we were hailing Vintage Crop for their scorching album ‘Serve To Serve Again’ which was chosen by Steve Lamacq as his personal favourite record of the year in BBC Radio 6music’s end of year list. Tracks from the album peppered the station’s shows throughout Tuesday, so much so that we sold out of the first pressing in our webshop. Never fear though, we have a light-blue vinyl repress due in early Feb, and for the first time a CD version coming out too, both are available to pre-order here now.

All that’s left to say is that we wish you every happiness over the Xmas break and we hope you all keep safe/sound and upbeat. Bring on 2021 when we hopefully can turn on the live music tap again too (crosses fingers).

Thanks as ever for reading and for all your ongoing support!
All the very best with the increasing merriment!
