UPSET THE RHYTHM TALK UNDERGROUND AT FRIEZE ART FAIR

Tomorrow (Wednesday 15th October) sees the official start of the annual mania that is Frieze Art Fair, a total overdose of international modern art in a very large tent in Regent's Park, and an excuse for the London art world to show off its plumage.

There is always a space at the fair devoted to talks about various weighty issues, and this year, UTR have been invited to participate in a panel discussion entitled "Is the Underground Over?". You might already guess what our feelings are about this just by our very existence, but here is the official blurb:

"A conversation chaired by music critic Simon Reynolds will examine how the notion of subculture has become outmoded through the overexposure afforded by the internet and the media’s rapid assimilation of the marginal. This panel also surveys the past, present and future of unpopular culture and explores the possibility of alternatives to ‘alternative’.

  • Chair: Simon Reynolds (Music critic)
  • Cosey Fanni Tutti (Artist)
  • Penny Martin (Rootstein Hopkins Chair of Fashion Imagery, London College of Fashion)
  • Claire Titley (Music Promoter, ‘Upset the Rhythm’) "
The talk talks place at 12pm, Sunday 19 October 2008, and art fair ticket holders can gain free access to talks. I hope to see some of you there! Any comments or suggestions would of course be welcomed! claire x

BOOKS DO FURNISH A ROOM

For the last two months I have been reading a 12 volume novel cycle written by Anthony Powell called 'A Dance To The Music Of Time'. I finished the final book last week and still cannot get my head out of the world Powell scripted so meticulously between 1951 and 1975, that's why I wanted to write this post. It's an incredible read, I don't think I've enjoyed reading anything more and in my awkward summation tracks the life journey of anti-protagonist Nick Jenkins through starting out at school to his twilight years. I say anti-protagonist because you literally know only a handful of information about the passive narrator by the conclusion, choosing through it's largely conversational style to document the manners and movements of his friends, enemies and acquaintances (rather than himself) as they reshuffle and interlock through the years making new connections and severing others as they grow up, enter society, find jobs, find love, find themselves at war, growing old and ultimately facing death. More or less everyone I've met over the last few weeks has barely heard of the work, even though it's still very much in print and regarded critically as important as Ulysses and In Search Of Lost Time, applauded during it's publication but now considered somewhat out of fashion. Perhaps due to Powell's keenness in detailing the aristocracy, or the political and military subjects that at times are introduced, maybe just the fact that it is on face value a bit of a daunting read, Dance seems to have sidestepped out of the spotlight for a time. For this reason I want to enthuse as much as possible about Dance, I honestly cannot for the life of me think of anything I have ever read that's held me so involved, it's seriously funny and at times too tragic a reminder of the meaningless behind much of our lives. There's only so many hours in the day and we can't waste a single second SO go and read Dance, it's more than worth it! And yes of course if you've already read all about the Widmerpools, Jean Templar, X Trapnel, Dr Trelawney and Stringham THEN let's totally high five when we meet in the street!

N N N NIGHT HIKE WITH SOFT CIRCLE

Yeh Hisham is the best, he played a show for us last year with Sic Alps and ever since we've been obsessed. Singing whilst playing drums/samples he can take us all on a hypnotic tripped out journey into a world of syncopated repetition and heavy ambience. Soft Circle have a brilliant album called 'Full Bloom' available now from Eastern Developments and will be touring with Titus Andronicus and No Age next month WHICH IS EXCITING but perhaps more so you can download his new online single 'Night Hike' now for free from RCRD LBL - you won't be disappointed!

Luke Upset is now a POSTER

For those of you left wondering the theme of said design, it is closely connected to a personal tale of dental wrath for Luke. (Warning: this gets a little gross). Many of his favourite foods became continuous with his gums after epic jowl surgery resulting in the need to manually remove food from the gums after eating. Such an episode was witnessed by Steve Chaos vs Cosmos at a UTR show and lo! the seed of a poster design was germinated. Steve did say there would be more pus, but, as on most occasions, I think we all prefer cake.
Steve vs Cosmos is a genius!
