U.S. GIRLS is the moniker used by Philadelphia's Megan Remy. Megan Remy is a chanteuse from (perhaps) the future, guiding all who choose to sail on an evocative trip through her unique aural hallucinogenic landscapes. Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls' approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting - a lithe, lysergic gamma ray of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk that sort of resembles Diamanda Galas reinterpreting Suicide. New album 'Go Grey' is the second full-length release by U.S. Girls and proves to be an even more fully realized excursion into a hazy alternate universe where pop vocals and muzzy scree fuse in harmony. The album conjures up ambient aerosols while luminous kaleidoscopes of sound sizzle, peak, and explode. Her label Siltbreeze thinks U.S. Girls should be hailed as the Eno of the 23rd century and we agree whole-heartedly.

New Futures

Hello again!
We've been working hard on our forthcoming records and tours these last two weeks but now we're back with some shows for you. Our next event is on Monday for TUNE-YARDS, which we're tripping about. The show sold out earlier this week however so apologies to those who missed out. We'll have news soon of a special return for Merrill this Summer along with a 5-piece band - bringing horns, drums, guitar, circular singing and so much more to the mix! XIU XIU are taking Tune-Yards on tour in the US in a few weeks time along with TALK NORMAL who we're booking a tour for right now as we speak, small world getting smaller! Our Xiu Xiu show later this month has also sold out, but never fear we've managed to bring them back over in June for a one-off date. Their new album 'Dear God, I Hate Myself' is terrific by the way, a total obsessive listen, check it out if you haven't already. Next week we also have DENT MAY back in town, teaming up with JEREMY JAY for a swoonsome party next weekend, more on that later in the week. During our spell of brief hibernation the FOOT VILLAGE and BIRD NAMES LPs (finally) arrived with us too, they are unreal, check out some photo rapture here:

http://upsettherhythm.blogspot.com/2010/02/new-additions-to-our-webbe-shoppe.html

We've also been confirming shows right, left and centre! Amongst the many new shows listed in our programme at the end of this we have WOLF EYES, MI AMI, XENO & OAKLANDER and OMAR SOULEYMAN (oh - yesss!) lined up, plus we're happy to announce a triple-headline party in May with REAL ESTATE, GANGLIANS and DOUBLE DAGGER all performing. Please read on for Monday's blurb and all those future engagements too, it's a crazy list I promise...

TUNE-YARDS
TRASH KIT
THINK ABOUT LIFE
Monday 15 February
Cargo, 83 Rivington Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 3AY
8pm | 7.50 | SOLD OUT

TUNE-YARDS is Merrill Garbus - a one-woman DIY workshop concocting an impressively assured sort of lo-fi World (as in World Music) pop world (as in her own secret territory) by mixing tenor ukulele, digital loops, toms and (most importantly) a powerful, shape-shifting voice. At times, she's a self-contained Sublime Frequencies compilation, jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and folk. Her debut album 'Bird-Brains' was released on Marriage Records and 4AD last year to much acclaim, and anyone who has seen her perform can attest to her captivating and ingeneous live show.
http://www.myspace.com/tuneyards

TRASH KIT are a gang of facepainted flag-bearers who have a wild feel for melody and a heartfelt kick inside each song. Mixing chaos, considered songcraft and overlapping harmonies in equal measure, the female trio sound as joyful as they are focussed. Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray formed the band in early 2009, and since then have been lighting up London, energising the UK underground with their raw performances. There's a stripped back quality to their music that packs the bravest of punches. Both Rachels tangle their vocals with each other whilst expressive drumbeats and impulsive guitar and bass lines pin down the songs. Trash Kit sound both urbane and primal, drawing on the potential of punk and the naturalism of an internal folk music and as a result sound like nothing else. The band's self-titled debut album will be released on CD/LP through Upset The Rhythm in March.

THINK ABOUT LIFE bring the party like no other band operating in Montreal area. Their recordings, like their live show, consist largely of party anthems from start to finish. The trio keep things short and sweet, all high-energy action, no filler. The band is led by Graham Van Pelt, a multi-instrumentalist (also of Miracle Fortress), recording studio proprietor and one of the main organisers behind Montreal's super-hip palace, the Friendship Cove. With Matt Shane on drums and Caila Thompson-Hannant (also of Shapes & Sizes and Miracle Fortress) on keyboards, vocal duties are led by Martin Cesar, the main man behind Dishwasher and formerly Donkey Heart's front person. Their debut album, as well as last year's record 'Family', were both released by Alien 8 recordings.

DAN GRAHAM SCREENING ON SUNDAY TOO

Our buddies at Auto-Italia are hosting this on Sunday too, so there's no excuse not to get arted-out these next few days!

Dan Graham’s Rock My Religion
(An Expanded Screening)
Sun, 7 Feb 2010, 4.30pm

Dan Graham’s artistic practice has been influenced by music from early on and this interest becomes more explicit in the late 1960s through some of his first writings such as Live Kinks, 1969 a review of a concert by the Kinks. During the 70s and 80s, Graham developed close working relationships with composer Glenn Branca and musician and Sonic Youth founder Kim Gordon, who supposedly started her music career by taking part in one of Graham’s performance pieces, which didn’t quite go according to plan and turned into a fully fledged concert. Through “a shift towards the documentary” as described by LA MOCA’s Bennett Simpson who recently curated a Graham retrospective, the 1980s saw the release of two video works by the artist which explicitly deal with the subject of popular music: Minor Threat from 1983 on a concert of the American punk band of the same name and the more complex Rock My Religion (1982-84), developed in discussions with Branca, Gordon and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, all of whom contributing to the soundtrack of the work.

In Rock My Religion, Graham traces the history of popular music in America back to the 1950s, linking it with a 19th century Puritan sect, The Shakers. The bodies of the Puritan Shakers, reaching ecstasy in order to ‘overcome’ sexuality and to be closer to God, are juxtaposed with the shaking bodies of America’s pubescent teenagers, escaping their suburban prisons by immersing themselves in the sexually charged adoration of their pop idols – from Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis to Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison. For Graham, a study of popular music is intrinsically linked to an analysis of America’s political and social system constructed on the basis of a belief in the ‘American Dream’, a work ethic based on achievements of individuals and the nucleus of the traditional family. Whereas the Shakers’ aim was to create an equal society achieved through the elimination of sexual desires in the course of communal dancing, popular music allows the creation of a communal experience through the appreciation of individuals’ creative expressions. With Rock My Religion Graham investigates the idea of a relationship between 19th century industrialisation and America’s ‘suburbanisation’ in the 1950s, connecting this work to other pieces which show the artist’s continuous engagement with the semiology of suburban and urban architecture.

Rock My Religion is as much an experimental documentary as it is a theoretical discourse on American culture in the second half of the 20th century, making this work a visual extension of Graham’s writing practice rather than linking it with his works in video art. In contrast to the’ instantaneous presence’ experienced within closed-circuit video installations, Rock My Religion is an attempt to ‘extend time’. Linking the past with the present may be a way of accounting for popular music’s ability to occupy a space between the economy of a commercial industry and the realm of fantasies and desires. This screening will contextualize Graham’s video-essay with readings of interviews, writings and music in order to expand on the influence of music on Graham’s work and to reflect on the importance of writing as part of his artistic practice.
