MOOR MOTHER is the viscerally
charged output of Philadelphia based interdisciplinary artist, Camae
Ayewa. Her music is often harsh and strange, projecting both the cathartic
anger of punk and the expansive improvisatory spirit of Sun Ra. Using a
variety of machines, field recordings, and analog noisemakers, Ayewa constructs
fractured, cacophonous waves for her words of punishing pertinence to ride. As
a musician performing under the name she has toured in Europe and the U.S. at
numerous festivals, colleges and universities sharing the stage with King
Britt, Islam Chipsy, Claudia Rankine and Bell Hooks. As a
soundscape artist she has had work featured at Samek Art Museum, Metropolitan
Museum of Art Chicago, and Everson Museum of Art.
Her latest
album, Fetish Bones, was released through Don Giovanni
Records in September 2016. The album features 13 songs conceived and
recorded in Camae’s home studio and it is an album intended as a form of
protest and as form of time travel — a collection of sounds that are events
themselves, telling stories rich in history about the journey that brings us to
today and the future we are creating. Fetish Bones is not an album meant to
help you forget. It is made so that you will remember the injustices that we
bear witness to and participate in.

been as much night owls as we have, was brilliant to see you all. This week we
have the indispensible Future Islands
back in the big smoke for three nights at the O2 Academy Brixton. True DIY
synth pop heart-breakers made good, Future Islands have been making our lives
better since we released their debut album back in 2008.These three shows at Brixton represent
the bands biggest shows to date, I hope you can join us to celebrate their most
vintage year yet. Tickets are now only available for Wednesday’s event so with
that in mind it’s well worth buying in advance to avoid missing out on this unprecedented moment in their career. Read on for all ticket

This Thursday we’re also very lucky to
have the one and only Roy Montgomery
touchdown at Café OTO to play an incredibly rare set for us. Joined by Alexander Tucker in support, this
promises to be a very special evening of pastoral guitar ambience and
cartographical drone par excellence. Again, we’re almost totally out of tickets
for this one too, so please do snap some of the last ones up if you can, it’ll
be too good to miss, see below for details.

Talking of new releases, we wanted to
share with you the brand new mesmeric video for ‘Inherit The Wind’ by Darlene Shrugg. Featuring some blazing
live footage of the band, the video (made by Meg Remy herself) practically brims
with coming of age visuals seemingly dug up from after-school specials. ‘Inherit

The years since the
release of Singles have been transformative for Future Islands,
catapulting the Baltimore-based band from cult favorites to synthpop icons. As
addictive songs like breakout 'Seasons (Waiting on You)' turned the world
on to sublime pleasures a loyal fan base already knew, this hard-touring band
ploughed forward, playing their 1000th show in July 2015 and celebrating
their 10th anniversary in February 2016. This year Future Islands returned at
the top of their game with new album The Far
Field, delivering twelve chest-pounding love songs and odes to the road
as only they can.
The Far Field refines and builds on the
breakthroughs of Singles,
bursting with undeniable hooks and disarmingly honest lyrics written
by Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass,
guitars), and Gerrit Welmers (keyboards, programming). The band
began writing new material in January 2016 on the coast of North Carolina, and
continued throughout the year in Baltimore before road-testing these songs with
a series of secret shows under fake names. In November 2016, they settled in
with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton at Los Angeles’
legendary Sunset Sound, where everyone from The Beach Boys to Prince have laid
down masterpieces.
The result is Future Islands’
best set of songs yet, both an emotional summation of the themes they’ve
explored over the past decade and a further distillation of their signature
art-pop sound. It’s the first Future Islands record featuring live drums
by Michael Lowry, who joined the band prior to their viral performance of
‘Seasons’ on Letterman, and whose energy propels the band’s sound to new
heights. With Congleton’s production and string and horn arrangements
by Patrick McMinn, The Far Field finds
Future Islands crafting soundscapes larger and more opulent than ever before,
as sonically lush and expansive as they are lyrically raw and direct.
These three epic shows atthe O2 Brixton
Academy this week represent the largest shows the band have played to date, we

ROY
MONTGOMERY is a guitarist and academic from New Zealand. Across an array of
peerless solo and collaborative releases on labels like Kranky, Siltbreeze and
VHF he is the architect of a widescreen drone aesthetic exploring psychedelic
abstraction and pastoral minimalism that has proved to be highly influential. A
key protagonist in the Christchurch 80s noise rock scene, his minimalist
post-punk band The Pin Group were the first act to release on Flying Nun and
lead to other explorations in short-lived drone project The Shallows and the
gloriously open-ended freedoms of noise pop outfit Dadamah.
After a quiet spell, Montgomery
returned in the late 90s, producing towering spires of guitar lines that
exposed fragility between the strums. With his solo releases and in
collaboration with Flying Saucer Attack, Bardo Pond (Hash Jar Tempo), and Chris
Heaphy (Dissolve), his focus shifted from the truth-mining of rock music to
epic celestialism. His ambitious yet humble tracks outstrip their origins, and
Montgomery toured the world sitting cross-legged on the floor, playing
twenty-plus-minute compositions. A long period of silence followed, marked only
with a split album with Grouper (who lists Montgomery as a primary influence),
involvement in Torlesse Super Group, and a couple of thematic variations
serving as soundtracks for films. He unexpectedly re-emerged in 2016 with R M H
Q (also know as Roy Montgomery's Headquarters) on Grapefruit/Ba Da Bing, four
albums of new material released simultaneously that marked a return to his
distinctive pastoral guitar style but added the rare sound of his singing
voice. Like all of his catalogue listening to his work is a visceral experience
with repeating phrases swelling and decaying, immersing the listener in the
cyclical narrative of his compositions.
ALEXANDER
TUCKER is a British avant-pop chamber drone artist who has released solo
albums on ATP and Thrill Jockey, he's also the cosmic guitarist in Grumbling
Fur. His live shows fuse self-harmonizing vocal performances with tone
generators and looped instrumentation to create a bewildering feast for the
senses that seems to tap the wyrd canon of English psychedelia as much as the
melodic reverie of contemporary electronic and drone music.

CHAIN & THE GANG are a dynamic and irresistible live combo that pens provocative, unforgettable odes to obedience and total destruction. They are led by the remarkable Ian Svenonius; the prime mover behind two of the most essential bands of our time, Nation Of Ulysses and The Make-Up, and author of several books, including The Psychic Soviet and Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock 'n' Roll Group. Ian is also an online talk show host and auteur filmmaker. Chain And The Gang deal in a radical rock n roll that updates rock, blues, and gospel music or vocal quartets from the late 50s /early 60s for the discerning few. After nodding off to the washed-out zzzounds of the latest five-star folly critic’s catastrophe, Chain & the Gang decided to respond with their patented perversity; they reached to the farther corner of the lab and came up with an immortal classic in the hard-to-hear genre of “EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC”. We’re getting ready for a marathon
week of incredible live music in London; sharpening pencils, tying
shoelaces, drawing up playlists...
This very busy epoch for Upset The
Rhythm kicks off tomorrow night at Kamio in Old Street, where we’re
lucky enough to have a mind-blowing trio of now-bands playing! Luminous
post-punks Shopping are headlining in support of their feverish new single ‘The Hype’, whilst Gauche (members of Priests and Downtown Boys) and The World will also turning in disarming performances guaranteed to quicken pulses.
Upset The Rhythm will be DJ-ing long
into the night too, so prepare for dance off. Tickets are £9 on the door
from 8pm, imagine amps switched on from 9pm. See you there!
On Monday & Tuesday we return to St John on Bethnal Green church for two special evenings in the company of Mount Eerie.
It’s a 100% privilege to witness Phil Elverum perform, it is a minimal,
perfectly judged exercise in less is more, always vastly personal,
always intensely honest.
This rare concert will feature Phil playing an extra-long set of
recent material on acoustic guitar and vocals alone. Mount Eerie will
commence from 8.30pm each day. Monday’s concert is now sold out, but
some last tickets remain for Tuesday here.
Also on Tuesday we’re excited to have Protomartyr
headline a sold out show at The Dome. There will be no tickets on the
door for this one unfortunately and due to a eardrum-related medical
issue Sauna Youth have been replaced on the bill with Ireland’s Oh Boland. Bomber Jackets are still primed to open proceedings.

Ian is hosting two nights of music for us at The Islington with support from The Plan and Mystic Business. Escape-ism
is the name under which Ian will be performing his crucial sonic
exposés of the self via vocal, guitar, drum machine and cassette tapes.
Tickets have been flying out the door for this too, so with only Friday
17 November still on sale, we’d strongly urge you to pick some up in
advance to avoid disappointment on the door.

SHOPPING are propulsive
bass lines, primitive disco-not-disco drums and guitar lines sharp as
broken glass. The band was formed in 2012 by members Rachel Aggs
(guitar), Billy Easter (bass) and Andrew Milk (drums), who've all done
time in a plethora of notable UK DIY bands including Trash Kit and Wet
Dog. They pull from a well of 70's post-punk with a voraciousness seldom
seen these days, bringing to mind the jagged aggression of Gang of
Four, the voracious yelp of The Slits and the dance inducing thrust of
Delta 5 . Their debut LP 'Consumer Complaints' was released November
2013 in the UK via MILK records and quickly sold out its first pressing.
A US re-issue of 'Consumer Complaints' came out in 2015 via Fat Cat
records, followed up by their excellent second album 'Why Choose?' The
band are tirelessly committed to taking their sound to new audiences and
spreading the Shopping gospel, securing impressive gigs along the way
including main support for ESG and Gang Of Four as well as a BBC 6 Music
session for Marc Riley. They have toured in the UK and throughout
Europe numerous times over the last few years and last year toured the
USA with also awesome Gauche, look out for a new album imminently!
GAUCHE are made up of
Daniele Yandel of Priests and Mary Regalado & Adrienne Berry of
Downtown Boys, plus a cast of friends. Gauche bring a funked groove to
scratchy, minimal post-punk on their debut Get Away With.... Originally
released on cassette via Sister Polygon Records, it is now also
available on LP through Danger Records. Taking elements of Young Marble
Giants, ESG (who they have played with) and Grass Widow, the DC band
inject an explosive energy into songs about fraught relationships, a
dependency on technology and social media and unfair working conditions.

THE WORLD are from
Oakland, California. The year is 2017 and The World offer the only
glimmers of hope in a city rapidly transforming into a wasteland of
artisanal toast and succulent shops right before our very eyes. They've
awed all those who have seen them play in San Francisco basements, beach
town bars, crowded East Bay lofts - who knew the sight of bongos could
be so titillating? And now The World is ready for the world. Their debut
LP is all double sax attack, the tremolo of dub guitar, and those spare
and sturdy drums, anchored by the gravitational pull of Amber's
propulsive bass. Every member of this band feels like the secret weapon,
and together, the combination is deadly, the particular alchemy of
musicians who voraciously consume music of all kinds. Members have done
time in Andy Human and the Reptoids, Rays, Pang, and Penny Machine -
devotees of all those will find much to like here. The World's a
post-punk band, sure, but they're also a dance group, a wild and
revolutionary art collective, sounds from the past catapulted to the
future. 'First World Record' is due out October 6th through Upset The
Rhythm.

MOUNT EERIE is the current
project of Phil Elverum. In high school in Anacortes Washington in 1996
Elverum started calling his tapes of self-recorded noise and songs 'The
Microphones'. Since then he's produced two decades worth of records that
span a wide spectrum from studio heavy atmospheric landscaping to
simple raw songs. The Microphones project was nourished by and located
within the community of artists around K Records in Olympia in the late
90s/early 2000s, and Phil Elverum's musical ideas were clearly the
product of the flood of independent music in the NW during those years.
After five albums the project was
renamed Mount Eerie just as the Microphones were getting some unexpected
attention from the widespread acclaim of 'the Glow pt. 2' (2001). The
Mount Eerie recordings got weirder and broader, and Elverum left K
Records and began releasing everything himself, ultimately building a
self-contained small town operation in Anacortes called P.W. Elverum
& Sun. Radical self-sufficiency has been a theme and obsession; all
all ages shows and never though a manager or booking agent, always
self-recorded, hands on in all details. Mount Eerie's albums have always
aimed to push into new territory, both in sound and idea, but the
thread of Elverum's voice has remained constant throughout, soft and
human amid the wide range of textures and worlds. Often the lyrics have
attempted to grapple with big questions, the briefness and the smallness
of human life being a running theme. On occasion the music has been
called "black metal" (Wind's Poem, 2009), "dream landscape" (Clear Moon,
2012), and "raw and direct" (Lost Wisdom, 2008).
The new album, 'A Crow Looked At Me',
sounds closer to the latter; minimal instrumentation, no production,
clear and heavy words right up front. The difference here is the subject
matter. In 2015 Elverum's wife, the French Canadian cartoonist and
musician Genevieve Castree, was diagnosed with a bad cancer just after
giving birth to their first child. She died a year later. Elverum wrote
and recored the album throughout the fall of 2016 in the same room where
Genevieve died, using mostly her instruments; her guitar, her bass, her
pick, her amp, her old family accordion, writing the words on her
paper. The songs are about the brutal details of that experience, from
the hospitalisations to the grieving, the specific domestic banalities
that become existential in the context of such huge and abrupt loss.
These songs are not fun. They are pretty and they are deep, and they
find a love that prevails beneath the overwhelming and real sorrow. It
is unlike anything else in the Mount Eerie catalog in its unvarnished
expressions of personal grief, metaphor-free.

ESCAPE-ISM is a solo project
from Ian Svenonius. Svenonius is known for his work in groups The
Make-Up, Chain & the Gang, XYZ, Weird War and author of underground
bestsellers such as The Psychic Soviet, Supernatural Strategies for
Making a Rock 'n' Roll Group, and Censorship Now! Recognised by
Performer Magazine as the "greatest performer on the planet", Svenonius
is profound, prophetic, perverse, and poetic. His debut solo album an
'Introduction to Escape-ism' is released through Merge soon, teaming up a
drum machine, guitar, cassette player, and a single voice singing
out... for a way out. Svenonius' songs cry out for love, justice,
redemption and insurrection, they stomp on convention and clobber
notions of what music can be. Live, Escape-ism a new paradigm of
performance: raw, gestural, idiotic, sublime, revolutionary, poetic,
faux naif, unknowing, a drainage pipe that leads to who knows where.
'Introduction to Escape-ism' isn't just the soundtrack for a late-night
drive on a lonely interstate, or a platter played to incite abandon at a
pajama party with one's pals. It's also a tunnel to tomorrow. It's a
mineshaft to the motherlode. It's 100% unadulterated Ian Svenonius.
THE PLAN are an evolving
post-punk outfit including members who have previously appeared in bands
like Wetdog, Private Trousers, Vic Godard and The Subway Sect & The
Ghosts. The Plan harness unruly beats with discordant keyboards
and guitars then stamp sweet vocal harmonies over the result.
Continually celebrating the release of their debut album 'Nervous
Energy' on Southend Records they currently play songs from this record
alongside the new ones lined up for No 2. (Nov 17th only)
MYSTIC BUSINESS are an anarchic
beats choir with punk ethos led by artist, composer, and drummer Jenny
Moore - bent on inciting progressive politics with spontaneous joy.
Jenny Moore (Bas Jan, Charismatic Megafauna) brings the statement, the
groove and directed mayhem. Rapture and rage are distilled out of thin
air by this 10-piece orchestra of chaos, using drums, tuned percussion
and voices. (Nov 18th only)

We’re delighted to share with you our new album from glammed-up, high-intensity rock group Darlene Shrugg.
Out now, the band’s self-titled debut album is a concise blast of the
sublime. Absorbing then inverting classic rock, this record brims with
imaginative production, brash theatricality and uninhibited energy.
Darlene Shrugg represents a collaborative convergence, featuring Maximilian Turnbull (formerly Slim Twig), Meg Remy (U.S. Girls), Simone TB and Carlyn Bezic & Amanda Crist, also known for their electro-pop project, Ice Cream. Thiscertain
alchemy has helped to establish the unique force found on this debut
album: four women, one man; four Canadians and an American;
collaborations stretching back to nascent high school years; punk
exuberance meeting studio finesse.
Formed in Toronto in 2013, Darlene Shrugg is a local enigma;
Darlene more or less abstains from an internet presence, and its public
performances are sporadic at best. This reticent progress continued for a
couple of years until last year when Young Guv, of Fucked Up fame, cajoled the band into a studio with engineer-producer Steve Chahley to finally record some of their unabashedly electrifying songs.
These
tracks profane, as much as pay tribute to a lineage of foundational
bands, arguably stemming from Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper through
Thin Lizzy. All of this unfolds in less than half an hour, leaving time
for a detour into the sublime with album centrepiece, Strawberry Milk,
an interstellar power ballad turned meditation on Eve. ‘Darlene Shrugg’

week Upset The Rhythm have been confirming shows left, right and centre.
We confirmed a second show for Escape-ism (Ian Svenonius) later this November, plus have new events for Gun Outfit and David Nance booked for February and a newly announced and on sale concert for Protomartyr at The Scala next May. So pleased to have them booked to come back, even before they play for us later this month!

Four, the voracious yelp of The Slits and the dance inducing thrust of
Delta 5 . Their debut LP 'Consumer Complaints' was released November
2013 in the UK via MILK records and quickly sold out its first pressing.
A US re-issue of 'Consumer Complaints' came out in 2015 via Fat Cat
records, followed up by their excellent second album 'Why Choose?' The
band are tirelessly committed to taking their sound to new audiences and
spreading the Shopping gospel, securing impressive gigs along the way
including main support for ESG and Gang Of Four as well as a BBC 6 Music
session for Marc Riley. They have toured in the UK and throughout
Europe numerous times over the last few years and last year toured the
USA with also awesome Gauche, look out for a new album imminently!
GAUCHE are made up of
Daniele Yandel of Priests and Mary Regalado & Adrienne Berry of
Downtown Boys, plus a cast of friends. Gauche bring a funked groove to
scratchy, minimal post-punk on their debut Get Away With.... Originally
released on cassette via Sister Polygon Records, it is now also
available on LP through Danger Records. Taking elements of Young Marble
Giants, ESG (who they have played with) and Grass Widow, the DC band
inject an explosive energy into songs about fraught relationships, a
dependency on technology and social media and unfair working conditions.

THE WORLD are from
Oakland, California. The year is 2017 and The World offer the only
glimmers of hope in a city rapidly transforming into a wasteland of
artisanal toast and succulent shops right before our very eyes. They've
awed all those who have seen them play in San Francisco basements, beach
town bars, crowded East Bay lofts - who knew the sight of bongos could
be so titillating? And now The World is ready for the world. Their debut
LP is all double sax attack, the tremolo of dub guitar, and those spare
and sturdy drums, anchored by the gravitational pull of Amber's
propulsive bass. Every member of this band feels like the secret weapon,
and together, the combination is deadly, the particular alchemy of
musicians who voraciously consume music of all kinds. Members have done
time in Andy Human and the Reptoids, Rays, Pang, and Penny Machine -
devotees of all those will find much to like here. The World's a
post-punk band, sure, but they're also a dance group, a wild and
revolutionary art collective, sounds from the past catapulted to the
future. 'First World Record' is due out October 6th through Upset The
Rhythm.
